Thanks for the info (you truly are the wikipedia of SDN)...so it seems if you got accepted to schools that don't get slapped with a rankings you are a) much better off, because you don't have to concern yourself with stupid rankings (which I confess I am having a hard time to put out of my head) and b) your gut feeling/interview impressions/second look experience/$$ will influence your decision (or maybe NIH "rankings", but if you aren't interested in research, those are pretty worthless, too)

Oh well...haha...I'll just resign myself to the fact that I will cough up the damn 15 bucks to look at the damned rankings because I can't pretend that I don't care a little bit...maybe not to make a decision based on them but at least keep them in mind.

thanks 🙂

I was about to PM you my username and password to take a look at the 2009 version before you buy the 2010 one, but it looks like my subscription expired a couple of days ago🙁

Bummer. But thanks for trying!! I really appreciate it.

I'm upset that Baylor's rank fell by so much. I hope that the merger with Rice eventually brings it to the top 10 in research.
Oops... Baylor... I feel sad for that... Anyway, I'm still going to apply Baylor =]

did someone put stanford in the same category in terms of bball with UNC?

look, stanford has produced the top 3 human beings alive right now (Tiger) but Michael >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Seriously? If you don't care about the rankings, then don't look at them. Go ahead! Nobody is asking you to care about them. But do you really have to be obnoxious and belittle the people that do care about them? They're completely entitled to do it. You go ahead and pick your school based on what you think are worthy criteria, but don't go sh***ing on other people's.

So I guess the answer to your question is that the rankings wouldn't exist if there weren't some people who care about them. Be respectful enough to let them decide for themselves as you, clearly, have decided that they don't matter.

Just saying.

WOW! 😎

Explain where I was "obnoxious" and where I "denigrated" and "belittled" anyone. Anyone at all.

I'm a little confused, what sports are they at the top again? Not football, basketball, tennis, baseball, swimming, lacrosse, soccer... to name a few...

EDIT: Sorry, they actually are pretty good at Women's Basketball. My bad.

Stanford promotes excellence in both academics and athletics. Stanford has won the Directors’ Cup, which honors the most successful program in NCAA Division I sports, the last 14 years. In 2007–08, Stanford won two national team championships and had 12 teams in the top five and 17 in the top 10. Forty-nine athletes and coaches also represented Stanford at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Total NCAA Championships: 95 (NCAA rank: No.2)
Total Men's NCAA Championships: 58 (No. 3)
Total Women's NCAA Championships: 37 (No. 1)
Total Individual NCAA Championships: 407 (No.1)
NCAA Team Championships Since 1990: 55 (No.1)
NCAA Team Championships Since 1980: 78 (No.1)

Basketball - Women's team was in the Final Four this year. The Men's Basketball team has consistently been performing, including producing NBA players such as the Lopez twins and Josh Childress.

Tennis - ever heard of John McEnroe? Bryan Brothers? Dick Gould? Men's tennis is consistently ranked in the top 10 in the country and is 8th this year. Women's tennis may be 13th this year but has been consistently ranked #1 over the past decade and a half. The most memorable is perhaps also one of the most dominating stretches in NCAA history (from 2004 to 2007) - winning 89 matches in a row. The 89-match winning streak produced three NCAA titles, three Pac-10 Championships, seven All-Americans (including Amber Liu who was NCAA National Player of the Year for 2 years) and a member of the ATP tour. Head coach Lele Forood upped her dual match record to 171-3, achieving conference and national accolades along the way. Overall, Stanford Men's and Women's Tennis have won 24 NCAA Division I Championships in 23 years.

Soccer - women's soccer ranked #1 in the country last season, finished 3rd in the nation this year

Swimming - Men's swimming and diving was ranked #1 in the nation this year and has been ranked in the top 3 for the past 20 years. Women's swim and diving is equally dominant.

Volleyball - Women's are top 3 in the nation consistently

After 20 days of competition at the 2008 Olympic Games, Stanford athletes left Beijing with 25 medals, the greatest haul ever by the school's representatives at a single Olympics. The previous record was 21 medals, achieved at the 1924 Paris Games.

Have you heard of Tiger Woods? Michelle Wie?

But if it makes you feel better, our football team isn't great. We did produce John Elway though.

Can someone please post the nih funding/mcat/gpa for:

Pittsburgh
Vanderbilt
Baylor
Chicago

Thanks!

Michelle Wie is a student at Stanford....not an athlete. She cant compete as a NCAA athlete b/c shes already accepted money as a professional.

What I took from your post: Stanford is great at sports other schools don't care about, however at football and men's basketball you suck. John Elway is the best football player to come out of Stanford, granted Elway is pretty much the best ever, but he played at Stanford 30 years ago and is the only player of note to play for Stanford. Josh Childress and Michelle Wie are nothing to be proud of.

👍👍👍 Stanford's football team is a traditional doormat - beating USC 2 years ago was your best win in probably the last 10 years.

Stanford's basketball team is admittedly a little bit better, but usually not even the top in the Pac-10, and certainly not a top-25 program. Remember when it got steamrolled by Texas last year in the tournament even with your vaunted Lopez twins - awesome. And naming Josh Childress is a complete joke... according to wikipedia he's currently playing for "Olympiacos Piraeus"

Sad. You want to do some name dropping, Texas, UNC, and USC would absolutely demolish what Stanford has to offer.

Uh, Andrew, did you forget about Tiger Woods, the wealthiest and most recognized athlete in the world. He played golf at Stanford. When he plays on television, the ratings go through the roof. He is carrying the PGA. I think he earns about one hundred million dollars per year in endorsements. So go Stanford.

USC and UNC yes, but who has Texas produced recently? Vince Young, bust. Cedric Benson, bust. Ricky Williams...okay. Aaron Ross, okay. I'm sure I'm missing some, but their recent track record hasn't been great.

Stanford produced John Lynch, too! I love that guy.

In terms of academic excellence and athletic excellence, Stanford sets the standard. Stanford basketball v. Harvard or Yale, give me a break. Or football. Stanford tools the competition. For god's sake, Stanford plays in the Pac 10, and the other guys play in the Ivy League. Stanford plays USC and Harvard and Yale, well, they play Harvard and Yale, so be serious. I go to an Ivy League med school, but Stanford sets the standard for athletic and academic excellence. Oh, wait, I forgot about the University of Chicago and Washington University's football team. John Elway, enough said.
Duke's not so bad in both either.

I agree Tiger is great, but no one cares about golf, at least not compared to the NFL, NBA, MLB and NASCAR. Plus Tiger played college golf at Stanford, no other school cares about their golf team. I agree Tiger is great but no one gives a crap about college golf.

Better than arguing about meaningless rankings

Well, technically this is a forum for people who are applying to med school, so unless Tiger Woods and the vagaries of this year's Texas football team are going to help you apply and/or get in, I'd say that so much as NAMING the med schools is more on-topic.

Which one doesn't fit? Add Nascar to the list of sports no one cares about, next to golf and MLS.

Haha fair enough, you're making way more sense than some of us in this thread

Anyway, back on track - what exactly is the difference between a residency director ranking of 3.9 vs 4.0 or 4.4 vs 4.5? It seems like the only real comparison you can make is when there's a big enough gap, i.e. 3.9 vs 4.5.. seems weird to quantify residency directors' perceptions of things when only 20-25% of them return the survey.

Eh, I imagine there isn't really a difference when it's so minor. That's why people will talk about "top 10" vs "top 25" vs whatever. It's kinda like ranking 4.0 and above, then 3.0-4.0, 2.0-3.0, etc.

I remember when my brother had access to the rankings last year (which is no longer, of course like phospho says), you could choose to see the ones from 4.5-5, 4.0-4.4, 3.6-3.9, etc. That's what USNWR separated them by. I wonder if you could consider those the "tiers", rather than top 10, top 25, top 50, etc.

yeah you'd be surprised like andrew said... i think i read somewhere that the only event watched more than nascar races is the superbowl

Hmm. I wouldn't have expected Mayo to be so much lower than others.

No Duke is great. When I was a sophomore in high school, I was in the school musical. And the lovely girl who had the lead, Music Man, Marian the Librarian, academic super star, she went to Duke. I had a huge crush, but was never noticed by her. Of course, I was 15 and she was 17. Just a guy in the background. But I followed Duke because she went there. Coach K, the best. I love that guy. Actually, in the nasally words of Coach K, "I love Duke." I actually do love Duke, because of Marian the Librarian. Who after she graduated from Duke, went to med school in California, and now she is in her residency. Hmm, perhaps I should follow up.

Geez, you seem like you have the Internet forum poster's version of Asperger's Syndrome or something. Not to mock anyone on here who actually has Asperger's of course.

Because that team is paying him way more this year than anything he could've earned in the NBA. He can opt out after any of the years in his deal, and head back. Financially, a great move.

Financially yes, career wise no. Since signing with the Euro team Josh Childress has faded into obscurity, Stanford fanboys are the only people who know he still exists.

Golf is a game, not a sport. Football, Basketball, Baseball, Tennis, Hockey, Soccer, Cricket, Polo these are sports, golf is not.

wrong. all of those are games (basketball game, soccer game, baseball game, etc)

only actual SPORT is boxing
