Hello, I was wondering to know if this program is only for pre-med? I am pre-dent and don't know which program in which school is the best for me to attend.

Based on their page, it looks like it is more geared towards pre-med. Quoted off their site: "This program is designed to enrich a student's academic knowledge base as well as to strengthen a prospective medical student's credentials for admission to medical school."

So it is primarily geared towards pre-med, HOWEVER, I did have a pre-dent student in my class who ended up getting into her dream dental school! So that unique path has been paved before. I would talk to the director of the MSMHS program about that.

Thanks so much for all your info. How safe is it to live on mare island? Do you walk to school? Also, how are the professors and other staff?

It is pretty safe to live on Mare Island. More-so than Vallejo proper I would say. It is mostly just students on Mare Island, and some families. I would uphold the same safety guidelines that you would follow in any place (doors locked, no belongings in sight, etc). People usually walk or ride their bike to school, and it is pretty doable. Some people do have cars and carpool with each other (from within the island).

Professors and staff are super welcoming and have for the most part open office hours. Donna, the main admin and assistant for the Master's program is the backbone of the program and is super nice. In terms of teaching style, most of the professors are effective...some aren't. But you can get that with any program. The good thing is that students are very collaborative with each other and help each other out with study guides and review sessions if something does not make sense in class.

Thanks so much for your reply! I have not heard back from admissions yet and it has been over 30 days (the time Ms. Bible stated in her email verifying my application receipt). What do you suggest I should do?

Would you guys recommend joining a club or a clinic?

The current Master's class is finishing up finals so they might not be prioritizing admissions right now. If they haven't even given an application receipt, then I would suggest emailing Ms Bible (although she may be short in email). Does it not show anything in your portal that you submit the app?

As a Master's, you have the opportunity to shadow a clinic (as many times as you want!). In terms of joining a club, you do not HAVE to, and if anything, atleast for the first semester you should focus on your academics, your Master's GPA is the top consideration that the admissions committee looks at. Participating in events, volunteering, and shadowing is totally fine and encouraged as a Master's. Just make sure that you are on top of your classes and doing well. It is all about balance. I would say see how feel academically after the first two months and go from there. It is easy to be ambitious when you are surrounded by so many great opportunities and activities!

This would make sense! My application was verified by Ms. Bible on March 23. In that email, it stated there would be a decision within 30 days, but it has been past that so I was getting worried. Thanks so much for your input.

Your totally right! It is so easy to get swept away by all these opportunities. On another note, are there a lot of Holidays? Because it seems so from the master calendar.

Hello, I was wondering to know if this program is only for pre-med? I am pre-dent and don't know which program in which school is the best for me to attend.

Hello! Usually this program does have a focus and point to prepare the students for first year of medical school.. however from what I heard, a couple of people sometimes comes into this program and end up switching and starting dental, nursing, etc..

Thanks so much for all your info. How safe is it to live on mare island? Do you walk to school? Also, how are the professors and other staff?

I personally like how close it was to go back home after anatomy and shower for example and then I can head back to the library within 3 mins.. but I know that some people prefer otherwise.. I personally did not have a problem living on the island.. in fact there was an elementary school right next to us! I LOVE how caring and kind the professors are.. very understanding, and really care about u as an individual which was weird to me coming from a big university !!

Thank you for answering ya we have been so busy with finals this week!! Yes, I second that as well!!

Hello everyone! I am a current MSMHS-COM student at Touro, so if you guys have any other questions feel free to ask away!! Hope everyone is staying safe during these tough times!! 🙁

I was planning on applying to TOURO Cali?
Among the ppl you know in ur class, do you know what the avg GPA and MCAT's are?

I was wondering how many students are admitted into the program, and how many students typically apply? Thank you!

It is tough to give specific numbers for this because that data is not released. There are usually 62-65 matriculating students per class. In terms of those who apply, it varies from year to year but I would estimate maybe about 200ish? But that is a rough estimate.

did you mean you are applying straight to the Touro COM program? The GPA's and MCATs of the Master's class will differ from the traditional applicant. As a Master's, your GPA in the program itself matters the most, and your GPA in undergrad will be de-emphasized. This is the same case with the MCAT. People end up applying to this program BECAUSE they have lower MCATs or lower uGPAs. That being said, you want to have atleast a 3.3 GPA in the Master's to be considered competitive.

Hi everyone,

I have been a lurker here for awhile and I just made the decision a day ago to apply to this program. For my application so far, I requested for my transcripts, requested for LORs, and inputted all my experiences and achievements. I have not completed the attached questionnaire on the application yet.

With that said, my stats are
uGPA: 3.0 130 semester credits
sGPA: 2.8 semester credits (not including post-bac credits)
Post-bac GPA: 4.0 100 semester credits (mix of science and non-science courses)
Over 2000 hours of paid healthcare work/experience

I have not taken the MCAT yet as I plan to do that as a gap year.

I am worried that I am very late to the game in applying and if all goes well, I will have my application submitted by May 20th.

Can anyone give me solid feedback if this is feasible?

Thanks everyone! Good luck and stay safe out there!

It is hard to determine if this is feasible, MOSTLY because of the interruption by COVID. Application numbers vary from year to year, and even if people submit their apps earlier, they might get waitlisted. They fill the class on a rolling basis until they hit about 65 seats. It is hard to determine how many they have in this point in time. But they usually review people in batches. It is definitely still worth it to apply, even if you submit May 20. During my year, I submitted my app the day it was due and it still worked out (don't be a slacker like me, 0/10 do not recommend), so it is still possible yes! Worst they can say is no. ya know? Otherwise, your numbers should qualify you for the Master's program.

Hey! I also submitted my application in late march and was confirmed on April 2nd. Have you heard anything back yet? I haven’t yet.

I haven't heard back yet. We're probably in the next batch of applicants they are going to check? I looked on the calendar and they're doing DO interviews right now so it's probably busy for them. Good luck to both of us 🙂

Yes, I would say to wait just a little more because due to covid, things might be just taking a bit longer.. Additionally, we, current MSMHS students, are indeed currently having our interviews this week (Monday+Tuesday) and next week (Monday+Tuesday) for the DO program!!! 🙂 Wishing you both the best of luck on this though, you both got this!! 🙂

@SpaceDoctor8 I am kind of confused. First, Letters of Rec are offered by the Professors in this program but I think we can't use them unless we are applying the next cycle. Second, with the 'guaranteed interview' we technically still have to apply this cycle right? Since our stats are low, won't applying now have an adverse effect if we apply again next cycle as a repeat applicant?
Also is campus open now? The last message I could find about campus operations was from March. I'm looking into housing but if the school will remain closed then I shouldn't sign a contract.

I sent out 3 emails regarding the MSMHS program and concerns with my university having issues with sending my transcript. Is no one at the office responding to emails?

I left 2 voice messages and no one has gotten back to me. Given the COVID-19 situation, I understand that there is going to be a delay in response time, but I have been waiting for a response now for over 2 weeks. I just sent an email again today.

Anyone else having trouble getting into contact with the MSMHS admissions's coordinator/counselor?
Did you email Naisha Bible? She usually replies within a day.

I had also inquired about transcripts and was informed that if the ones you submitted with the postbaccas were final then you dont need to submit them again. If you dont mind, what issue is your university having? AAMC recently said that most universities should be able to send transcripts. I personally was able to get it electronically delivered the same day.

Has anyone heard anything as of yet? I’m wondering if I should send a letter of intent since its been about 2 months since my application was confirmed. Curious what other people’s time lines are looking like.

Caroline 🙂

Does anyone know the earliest we could find out about getting in/not getting in from the waitlist?

Withdrew my A spot earlier. I recommend checking in with the admisions team! Hope the seat goes to one of you, do not give up and good luck! You deserve it.

Hi Cauxi,

I am still waiting on a response as well! (We applied around the same time).

They only told me that an email will be sent once a decision is rendered.

Just wanted to let you know I received an update today so you may hear back soon!

sorry for the delay. you can use LOR's from the profs at any point in your application cycle whether it is the same year or the following year. 2) w/the guaranteed interview, you can apply this cycle OR next cycle. once you use that "freebie" though, and for some reason you do not get accepted, you would have to reapply as a normal applicant and not a Master's student, so no guaranteed interview. so if this answers your question, applying as a reapplicant will make it more difficult.
3) campus is closed through the end of the semester. summer is up in the air. fall semester seems like it will be a hybrid in person/online curriculum which honestly have no idea how that will play out.

I hope that answers your questions!

for newly accepted students, congrats! Look through the earlier posts in this forum and you will see the link to the FB Master's group where you can chat with fellow newbies, as well as old timers like myself to discuss everything Master's related.

woo!

I encourage you to apply because it’s before the deadline! I had a lower MCAT and was accepted.

I can’t attest to how hard the program is but feel as though, externally, it would prepare you/set you up for a medical curriculum.

You can definitely defer your interview a year in order to take the MCAT. A lot of students end up going that route and still get accepted.

The Master's program is fairly difficult in the sense that it is a watered down version of the medical school curriculum. Depending on your academic background, some classes might be easier than others. But it will take up a lot of your time, based on your ability to adapt to new study strategies depending on the class and professor. That being said, it is not impossible. Many students succeed through determination, hard work, and seeking out help when they need it. The most important thing is to do the best you can in the program while keeping your mental health intact.

Hello everyone, I'm a current MSMHS-COM student. We just wrapped up our year as you may heard already and I'm here to answer your questions and help you as best as I can! Feel free to ask anything 🙂

Hi! Touro is my #1 choice for masters & I just found out this week that I was put on the waitlist (I applied pretty late, near the end of May). Does anyone know how full the class is or when the latest they'll possibly let me know by?

I already submitted an additional recommendation letter that I hadn't before (they said I could) & sent a good ol letter of intent stating that Touro is my top choice. Is there anything else I can do?

In general--I really want to go to Touro but applied late! At this point should I start seriously considering my other acceptances (or even commit to one?) in case their acceptances expire while Touro doesn't get back to me in time?

Hi! 🙂 Well first of all, congrats on making it this far + having choices to choose from!! If you don't mind me asking, how long ago did you send that intent letter to them???

Although on my end I don't know how full the class is by now, I would assume that by now it is full as we started at the beginning of August.. maybe someone else can chime in on that one.. However, I was personally one of those people who got accepted SUPER late (like maybe a week and a half before orientation started) so they can keep accepting students pretty much up until orientation..

This can be stressful and I completely understand that as I had gone through the same thing.. That being said, I would honestly recommend that you save a seat somewhere else until you hear from Touro just as I did a year ago just so that you wont risk wasting a year if Touro doesn't happen! Once I got the call, I contacted the other school right away and asked for my seat to be given to someone else + moved to the Bay area to start!!

Thank you! I was notified that I was placed on the waitlist this Monday (6/15) and I sent my letter of intent the next morning. Hopefully someone can tell me about the status of class right now.

You being accepted last minute (even though it is not an ideal situation) gives me hope, but I will definitely secure my seat in another program to be safe. I only hesitate because most of my other choices are out of state, which are more expensive. The only exception is a postbacc program in the Bay that I was accepted to, but of course is different from getting a master's degree.

Can I ask if it was difficult for you to move and find housing near Touro on such short notice? Again, thanks so much for sharing what you know.

Hi there! I would also recommend to save your spot elsewhere until you hear something from Touro. I applied mid-April and was accepted in early June while others were placed on the waitlist even though they applied far earlier than me in the application cycle. I think it really depends on their preferences and your stats. The class may or may not be entirely full by now, I don't think there is a clear way to know this at this point. I don't think admissions will tell you either so as to not give you any false hope. Since I heard it's being held online in the fall semester, I would say it's fair game until orientation.

My suggestion to you is... I understand that this is your top choice but definitely save your spot elsewhere and make sure that it's just as good a program. Don't worry about location. if your ultimate goal is to attend medical school, pick the right program from the choices you have. Compare the programs and see what suits you best. Wherever you go, what matters is you excel. I had to pick between Touro Middletown and California, while the tuition was higher, the living cost was a lot lower for that location. so in the end, the total cost to me came out about the same as Touro California so I was convinced until Touro California released their decision and I picked it. Again, I was directly accepted but late while others were on the waitlist before me. So there's no clear pattern to this. I do hope you get off the waitlist but definitely have a good backup in case you don't.

As for housing, you should be able to find housing on the island or near school up to the week before school starts or even throughout the year. You just won't have that many options the closer you get to orientation. However, I recently heard that the MSMHS program may be entirely online for fall semester (I suggest you double check with admissions), so you might have more options because of this since more students might opt to stay home and you might have more time in the event that you're accepted very last-minute since you won't be required to be there first day if it's true that it's entirely virtual.

Well said @MedLifeIsBeautfl .. 100% agree with your recommendations.. As you suggested, I also don't think it will be too difficult to find something near campus.. There are usually many choices still open up till orientation and even throughout the year! 🙂

As mentioned, usually most Touro students will find their housing on: Housing and Rentals - Touro California Student Life

This site is always kept updated throughout the entire year so it is most ideal for most students to search for housing on there.. Best of luck to all of you still waiting to hear!

I am currently an applicant to the master program. I have read as much as I could about the program on SDN to avoid asking the questions already answered. However I still have a question about what is the maximum number of master program student the DO program will accept? I read from one post said 15 and another said 28? I feel there is probably a limited number for each year. Is that true? Another question I have is about what percentage of student will get A in a class? I read that classes are harder than undergraduate and similar to med school and one need 3.5, which is an A, to have a good chance a spot in the DO program. I really appreciate your reading and any response.

To be honest with you, there is no clear pattern as to how many students are getting accepted per class, we're expecting it to be in the 20s but I don't think we have reached 20 people yet for the 2019/2020 MSMHS class ... we started about 63 students - some dropped and others took leaves for different reasons - that left us with about 54-56 students - of these students, some are applying to TUCOM this cycle for Fall 2021 and others applied while in the program for Fall 2020 - So about 30-36 of us interviewed this cycle. Most likely, half of your class will apply while in the program and others will apply the following cycle and take a gap year because they'll want to retake their MCAT to qualify or increase their chances. According to 2018/2019 stats from what I recall from our orientation, 27 I believe were accepted for the class of 2023. I am currently waitlisted for class of 2024, so are some of my classmates who applied and had a very good GPA well above the required 3.0. About 5 students are on accept/hold. To give you an example, a classmate with a gpa above 3.5 and higher 490s is waitlisted. When decisions were released we compared stats amongst ourselves and some of the people who are placed on the waitlist should've been accepted on paper if you're only basing it on MCAT and gpa requirements. We also have students from the 2018/2019 class who took a gap year and are now admitted for Fall 2020. So there is no clear way to give you an exact number. That's why you're also encouraged by faculty and past masters students to apply to other schools when you're applying to TUCOM and that's a very safe thing to do. There are DO programs around the country that like to interview students who are currently in master programs elsewhere with the medical route so look into them. I followed their advice and applied to other schools. Bottomline is you're only guaranteed an interview and that doesn't mean you're guaranteed an acceptance in this program - that is important to remember. As confident as you are in your skills to get a very high gpa, don't just apply to ONE medical school.

Shine in academics and extracurriculars / campus involvement (I don't know how COVID will impact the weight of being involved now that activities would be limited I'd assume, I'm sure they'll take that into consideration). It also doesn't hurt to be liked by your professors and getting letters. But then again, it just might work if you get a very high gpa in the program (well above that 3.5) and have an impressive MCAT (a few students do).

As for the program's classes, YES you're not only taking classes that are more difficult than undergrad, this is a graduate level or medical school level program. The purpose is to test your limits and knowing how you handle that pressure and that shows in your performance and the trend in your grades. If you make friends in COM, you'll notice that some of your classes (especially physiology and anatomy) are almost the same difficulty level and taught by the same professors. It definitely prepares you for your first semester of COM. You'll eventually feel more confident and prepared for medical school because you had time to go through something similar once and explore your limits and strategies. My advice would be, do your absolute best if you pick this program but also apply to other schools to be on the safe side just in case you get the interview but don't get accepted. If you're eventually accepted to TUCOM, it's a great school to attend.

I hope this helps.

Thank you so so much! MedLifeIsBeautfl. You are a saint! Your information was much more than I could ask for. Now I have a clear idea and direction. Thank you again. Good luck to you and I wish you the best in your medical school endeavor. Is Touro your first choice DO since you are from California?

Touro is my first choice for sure. As a medical school it has a VERY nice/welcoming environment that sets it apart from some of the other DO schools that are just as popular in California and if you do the MSMHS program, you'll see it too. I got to shadow medical students in their OMM lab and definitely got to see that side too, which is something you're allowed to do as a MSMHS student. I have friends at another California school and they had some complaints that I for sure did not hear from my TUCOM friends if that helps. The MSMHS program directors will help you and track your progress throughout the year, and if you're struggling they will personally reach out to you and be sure to address it asap and help you as best as they can. Of course location and all the positive things I've seen also make it very competitive so I urge you to do your absolute best but also like I said, apply elsewhere and have a backup JUST IN CASE you're waitlist or placed on accept/hold for TUCOM and you're not willing to take a gap year after masters.

Thank you so much again!!! I totally agree with you.

For students in the MSMHS program who take the MCAT after the program and don't apply during the program, when do they typically take the MCAT? I'm wondering because I've heard you should turn in MD apps in the first week of June and DO apps in July and since it'll probably take a month to get scores in 2021, when is the best time to take the MCAT with enough studying time after the program ends?

(I'm on the waitlist but still want to try to make a plan just in case I get in!!)

Another couple questions...is there a better chance of getting into Touro's DO school if you apply during the MSMHS program due to the accept/hold policy? Or is there an equal chance of getting in for those who wait until after?
