TOUROCOM NY Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
While Touro-NY has become the DO school of choice in NY, UMDNJ's low instate tuition is not something you can easily pass up.

 DO school of choice in NY

Both NYCOM and touro have their pros and cons but for now touro can not compete with NYCOM in terms of rotations and residency affiliations; even if we just joined their opti, their hospitals are stilled biased in their favor in terms of residencies.

If my source is to be believed, and I am honestly a little bit skeptical of theory analysis but they do have access to the raw data which is hard to fake, touro has the largest increase in applicants and is the third (and nay be second when their later than average final deadline is up) most applied to medical school.

Quality once your there, I can totally understand your point, but something about the school has been addictive as heroine to students and I can understand the comment in the cibtext of blowing out nycom in number of applicants.

so i was on the "priority" waitlist last week....and just received a rejection hard copy letter.

WHATS going on???

hmmm that's strange ... did you call to find out what the deal is?

After reading about the waitlist on this forum I feel like it's so abrupt and disorganized. First its the waitlist, then a "priority" waitlist, and then a rejection? Shouldn't it be the other way around? 😕

And how many of those residencies are actually worthwhile? I go to NYCOM and I can tell you that although some of our rotations are strong, a lot of them are crap. Yes, we have a huge list of affiliated hospitals but that means nothing. You wouldn't want to do your residency at most of them. Even at an institution like PCOM--which has amazing residency programs--not many students actually remain there.

In the osteopathic world, away rotations are a must, especially if you want see yourself going to a certain program. I can tell you that NYCOM makes no effort to accommodate students in that respect.

If you think NYCOM is still the best DO school in NY, you are kidding yourself. I wish it weren't true because it is my school but until there are significant changes, it will continue to tarnish its own reputation.

Large class size, expensive tuition, high attrition rate, students with low 20s MCAT and a lack of student support? It sounds like I just described a Caribbean school more than a DO school.

You can hate on your own school and that's okay with me but don't give my school any undeserved praises. Our school only has a "good" reputation because outsiders give it to us. You know the school has serious issues if their own students and alumni cannot be proud of it.

Not really my place to speak poorly of any DO school (thus why i sort of evaded a comment on quality that D.S.DO was more focused on) but the above comment is exavtly what I've heard from the NYCOM students and recent graduates that I've talked too. Especially the comment on it only being praiseworthy because others assume it to be. I cannot independently confirm or deny this though.

I can confirm that NYCOM pisses me off to no end due to their stance on the AMA and banning it on campus. That makes my blood boil because of my own personal preferences for a united front of all american physicians.

It's a shame that an institution of higher learning can be so sloppy with the admissions process. On Saturday (March 17th), I received an acceptance letter dated March 13th, signed by Dr. Cammarata (Dean of Student Affairs). Today (March 19th), I received a rejection letter dated March 14th, signed by Joseph Perez. I would really like to know what's going on in those offices.

Do the people that make these admissions decisions actually talk to each other? Are lower level staff members pulling these names off a list, drafting letters and just handing to Mr. Perez & Dr. Cammarata to sign? It's one thing to send email invites to fill out the secondary by mistake, but contradicting decision letters? It's baffling.

From my interview and from what I've heard on here, the faculty & staff on the academic side has done a pretty good job establishing Touro NY, but the performance of admissions staff seems off. For all the good that Touro has accomplished academically, the admissions office may scare off good students. I'm not sure which letter to believe, so I will be contacting them. I've already sent a deposit to another school I was admitted to, so if I was admitted to Touro, I'm not sure what I will do. This situation is discouraging.

would you mind telling us your stats? thanks

Well, I was just told to consider the rejection letter as the "correct" letter. They really need to clean things up at their office. I was told several people received acceptance letters by mistake. I hope no rushed to send in that $2000 deposit.

Mr. Perez is amazingly consistent in his incompetence. I have nothing more to say about him.

I'd apologize, but it won't do any good. I can only promise you that the school itself isn't run that way.

wow seriously? That is ridiculous.

I just asked Mr Perez to withdraw me from the waitlist so my dealings with Touro are over but I think its going to be a frustrating/confusing few months for those who decide to see the waitlist process through to the end. I wish you all the best!

Hearing of all of these admissions horror stories just goes to show what a great loss it was when Obed left; the man was a one man admissions department and arguably one of the best.

Just curious why did he leave? From reading last years posts people seemed to love him. Mr Perez seemed like a nice guy when I met him on interview day but I got the impression that he was more schmooze than substance.

I'm sure its just growing pains, they will get their act together, its just difficult because the application process is stressful enough without careless errors.

From a casual conversation with obed (and no, he probably wouldnt tell me the whole story) he had previously had some arguments with the admin but he was too valuable to ever fire. Then when he got another opportunity with similar pay he jumped ship first.

laiba i believe the reason ppl are being rejected even off of the "priority" waitlist is bc usually a lot of ppl get in and decide to go elsewhere, but with things getting more competitive, more ppl getting into just one school, and touro improving and looking more appealing, less ppl are passing up the opportunity to go to touro

wow im so glad the nycom student came on here and said that, honestly thanks a lot for your....honesty lol....i was in a difficult place trying to decide between touro and nycom, what you jsut said adn the fact that they are increasing tuition to like 50-60k is ridiculous, touros young passion to prove itself and small class size has me convinced, plus i love the city and am earning for a chance to prove myself and help improve an already upward climbing school!

Being in the city is a very enticing factor!😍

Same thing happened to me! I got the priority waitlist email and four days later i got the rejection letter, WTF???

Just got the rejection, after receiving the "priority email" a couple of days before. 🙁

This really makes Touro look bad, if this had happened to me I would bring it to the attention of Dr. Goldberg.

I haven't received anything--not even an email. I called and they told me to email Mr. Perez. I have not heard from him yet. I know I'm on the waitlist because I called a month ago.

Perez is out of the office for the next week, I got that response when I emailed to withdraw today.

I emailed him early last week and I didn't get a vacation email back

got this today. why the DOA is out of the office in the middle of admissions season is also strange.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for your message. I am currently out of the office, with limited access to e-mail.

I will be returning on March 26th.

If you need assistance before then, you may reach me Issa Sow ext. 2588 or Cherie Hunter ext. 2544
For urgent issues, please contact Dr. Cammarata at 646-981-4518

Hey, I was wondering what the date was on the rejection letters that were received? Thanks!

Perez might try to save himself by saying that waitlisting does not guarantee admissions decision

Man, this is like watching a bad trainwreck happen.

Spoke with Dr. Cammarata and he said if you are on the waitlist with a 28 or below, you are most likely rejected and that we should double check with Issa Sow

Yea I'm still on the waitlist. Issa said they did an initial review of waitlists. I think they just cut those people with an mcat 28 or lower first.

So now I figured out why I haven't received any emails or letters.

If you didn't wantv28 or below why waste their time with interviews and wait lists?

exactly lol, if you're good enough for the interview, good enough to be on the wait list, why use stats at this point?

I imagine, from comments i heard from the dean, that they werent expecting such a huge uptick in applicants. They probably gave interview/waitlist to anyone with a compelling resume/application but when they ended up with tons of people on the wait list they needed to institute an esoteric numeric cut off just to shorten the length.

Perhaps. I just pray to get 30+ this August so that I don't risk a shady wait list gig on my application cycle.

Since Tourocom issues late interviews. Is it safe for an underdog (3.1c, 3.0s) like me to still apply in June with an MCAT filed for Aug 10th?

No surprise that the # of applicants at Touro shot up, the numbers have been going up at all schools these past few years. It would be better if they had a little foresight and invited fewer people to fill out the secondary and fewer people to interview. I would have rather been rejected right after the interview, then to be on the waitlist for 3 months and told we picked some cutoff for MCAT scores and you didnt make it.

People gotta keep trying to get in, this year was my 2nd time around applying to DO schools and I didn't get into Touro, but I got in elsewhere.

<shrug>

I applied to Touro in January with similar stats. haha. oops. Still got in. But that was also a few cycles ago and I did really well on the MCATs (34).

Just do solid on your MCAT, apply as soon as you have all your documentation ready (or apply early as possible, im unclear as to what the best advice for a person with a late MCAT is). Either way, whether you apply ASAP or once the MCAT scores are back, you'll still be applying pretty early in the bigger picture. Should be able to cash in on the "early applicant" effect of higher acceptance rates. Or so I'm told.

That's what I'm hoping for. Did you follow Sn2ed famous schedule to get you a 34? What advice do you have? PM me lol

Haha, thats how i feel. $200 for a secondary. I wont even go into what i spent on plane tix, taxi, hotel, etc.

BossDoc: Well then relax bro - youre gonna be a doctor!

I am relaxed. I'm content w/ my situation. I feel bad for other people. I wish they didn't even so many people and waitlist so many of those same people. Maybe a little more time should be spent analyzing and comparing applicants on the front end instead just setting cutoffs now. Maybe they should take their time before they send acceptance letters by mistake followed by rejection letters. I know for fact other people received acceptance letters by mistake b/c Dr. Cammarata told me. Im sure some of then didn't have another acceptance to fall back on. Im sure some of them told family members & friends and posted it on facebook. Its a sad situation.

What is this sn2ed plan? could you or anyone please PM this info to me or how to get this? I might have to retake the MCAT.

I want to preface this post with this...I decided to pursue medical school 3 years ago and since, it has been a dream of mine to attend med school in NYC. I interviewed and was put on the "priority waitlist" like many others...and received a hard copy rejection letter in the mail 1 week later. Was I disappointed? A little..BUT..I told myself after my interview that if I didn't get in I would be confident that there was nothing else I could have possibly done..my interview went great, I was impressed with the school, and had an unbelievable experience with the faculty and fellow interviewees. Furthermore, I have been incredibly blessed this cycle with 3 other acceptances. Now, why am I taking the time to write this?..because Im not the kind of person who writes on forums for fun. After reading a little bit and finding out that people were actually sent acceptances and then told that it was a mistake is a HUGE disappointment to those people. Even if you are biased and are the type of person who would be offended by this post, you can surely see how wrong this is for obvious reasons. Do mistakes happen?..absolutely..but this is incredibly disrespectful to its interviewers who probably jumped up and down and shouted to every person they knew that they got accepted. Touro..please get your admissions together. For those of you who attend the school, please bring it up to SOMEONE. To those who this happened to, I am sorry and I hope this cycle works out for you.
