Yeah you're probably right. Cant wait for another foot of snow this weekend, probably my last chance for fresh powder this year.

I just decided that I will be attending Touro in Vegas! :D I'm very excited, and I'm looking very much forward to it. Anyone else going to be be there this August and looking for housing? I'm looking for a roomate.... I'm not too wild.. I promise

I stumbled into a student association/government last time i was exploring around, and now I can't find it again. Does anyone know what i'm talking about? do you have the link?

Just an FYI...The Villa Serena apartments will be converting to condominiums...so, you may not want to bother looking here unless you want to buy.

Has anyone looked into Health Insurance providers yet? Who's recommended, who's the cheapest etc... Any help in this department would be much appreciated. Thanks

I chose HPN (Health Plan of Nevada) but I regret it. I think it is the cheapest out there, but for only a few bucks more, you could go with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. BCBS offers you much more of a selection of doctors to go to, and you are covered nationally (which is big for me, because I can be covered when I go home to St. Louis on break). That is why I will switch to BCBS over the summer. Hope this Helps

Yeah, I have Anthem/BCBS and although the rates may be slightly higher, I think they are more comprehensive. It's better to be safe than sorry. I had BCBS back in Chicago and was happy with them.

You may also want to look into SOMA health insurance as well.

I have decided to move into a smaller unit for my second year at Touro, but I have a lot of stuff that I need to get rid of...

I have a queen size “hide-a-bed” (couch with a bed inside) for sale: $150 O.B.O.
Apartment001.jpg

Black Chair with foot rest and artwork as well: $100 O.B.O.

Also a fun little candle thing: Make me an offer

Can any of the 09'ers give us an overview of the housing market around the school. I would like to get some info. on some of these apartment complexes near the school: how's the management?, safety?, cleanliness, etc... Any info would be appreciated.

I saw all of the other threads for other schools and figured I would start ours! Let's get to know each other before we get there next fall, share ideas, and help each other out with this tedious process leading up to orientation. I look forward to seeing you all when classes start and getting to know you on the forums!

Chris

Hello entering class of 2010!
I recently decided to go to Touro-NV and am happy to see that Chris started this 'thread'! I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you and can't wait to share the wonderful/stressful med school experience with you. Thank you Chris and everyone who takes time from their busy schedule to give us information on housing and other advice.
I was wondering if any of you have advice on the following: I want to be as prepared as possible for the upcoming year, and was thinking about taking a summer course to make Year 1 a little easier. I'm considering biochemistry, anatomy, pathophysiology, microbiology, or medical terminology. If anyone has time to rank these courses in terms of which are most helpful, it would be greatly appreciated!

See you soon,
Brent

.....one more quick question. Does anyone have any 'insider' info on the wall thickness of local apartment complexes? I'm a hypocrite and play guitar loud but want quiet when I need it. BTW, DrB - that apartment looks nice....is it a good building?

Hey guys, on the subject of apartments there's a good list further up on this page, and it's got most of the apartments right around school listed. One that isn't listed is the one I'm at. Allego apartments are nice, clean, quiet, gated and a one bedroom is around $800. The management is fantastic and I really like it. I'll probably live here next year. Feel free to PM me if you've got questions.

As for wall thickness… I've got no idea. I never hear my neighbors, but I don't know if that's because they're really quiet or the walls are thick. If you plan on being loud, you might want to take a pass on an apartment or a condo and just look into renting a house. You should be able to find something pretty reasonable right around school. I've got some buddies who just rented a three bedroom house for about $1300 a month. You can find one more or less for depending on what you want.

As for taking classes this summer… eh… you're going to get mixed responses to that. There are some people who will absolutely tell you that must take classes and study your ass off before school starts. Remember people are going to advise you to study what ever they them selves didn't do well in, so take all the advice with a grain of salt. Some people might actually benefit from cramming all summer, but I suspect that they're in the minority. If you feel like it will help to take a summer class, out of your list I would say biochem would be the most beneficial to take if you've never had it. There's no way you can successfully study for anatomy until you experience it, med school style. We get an intro to micro in the spring of first year, so you probably won't remember it by the time that class rolls around. Pathophysiology isn't until 2nd year, so don't even bother with that one. Human physiology on the other hand, would not be a bad class to take. But really, you're going to learn it all a system at a time first year.

Me…. I'm inclined to say just relax, enjoy your summer, and panic about school starting (no reason to panic… everyone will tell you not to panic and stress… but you're going to anyway, and that's ok ;) ) Just relax as much as you can, hang out with your current friends, meet your new ones, and enjoy this summer. You'll have more then enough work to do in just a few months.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I'm more than happy to answer them.

First off, thank you again Kubed! Sounds like biochem is considered by most to be the best course to get out of the way? Unfortunately...I can't seem to find a school out here that offers it (I'm taking care of my mom in Cincinnati for the summer, but am from LA). I have been able to find some anatomy courses, so I'll check those out further to see what level they are. I guess I'm just intimidated by the first year curriculum - 6 med school level courses the first semester seems pretty intense!
Good info on the housing too...thank you. :)

Does anybody have health insurance through SOMA or AMSA? After checking and comparing policies, I think the best route for my wife and I would be through AMSA, but I wanna check and see if anyone has it that could give me some insight.

Thanks

Chris

I can only speak of Timberlakes Apartments, for which I am moving out because they are raising my rent (for a one bed) to 895/month if I do month to month (it is a bit less if I sign a new lease). It is a nice place and the staff is "sorta friendly" (don't be fooled they are all sales people). They have yoga class 2x a week (but I don't go any more) and nice spacious apartments. I do hear my upstairs neighbors, but not the ones next to me... Keep in mind that Kubed is on the top floor, so if you want quiet try to rent one (but also keep in mind the heat in the summer). Also the Timberlakes has a lot of skate borders, kids and people with loud music. They don't have gates or speed bumps so you get speeders and door-to-door solicitors.

PM me with questions...

Thanks....I will check out the other site!

Hey there....what is the url for the other site? I want to get to know my future stressmates!

I want to elaborate on what Kubed said regarding taking classes before coming to school. I am one of those people (and I'm sure there are some of you out there) who was not a science major and who took the minimum necessary to be accepted. I do feel like it would have been nice to have had those classes before, but ABSOLUTELY not necessary. The amount of time you put in, is the result you will get. I have to work hard, but it's doable, and I have never seen any of this before.

My recommendation: Forget about school for the next 4 months! Go out, hang out, do whatever it is you like to do. Whatever you can cram in a summer will not be beneficial enough come September/October when you don't ever want to study again (and that's just one block's worth). Let your brain breathe now (thats some serious medical jargon :) ), because it will not have time to until next summer.

BUT...if you feel the need to take something this summer...nothing else will be beneficial except for biochemistry. It doesn't even matter where...if you go to the local community college and take a BS biochem course that's fine. At least you will have the basics.

And as Kubed said...we were all anxious and worried we wouldn't be able to handle the curriculum, but we have and you will, and the OMSII's will be there to guide you. PM me as well if you have any questions, Kubed is too busy cleaning his "nice, clean, quiet, gated one bedroom apartment."

Wow, you guys are awesome. How you find time to give these answers is beyond me, but it is EXTREMELY helpful. I'll try to do the same for the next entering class, but this is a hard act to follow...
So yeah, biochem huh? That sure is a notorious class! Maybe I can find like a popup book or something this summer - you know, something with a lot of pictures!

Also, how do students living in houses with other students seem to do compared with students living alone in apt's? Any sig. difference there?

Thanks!

stretch and kubed speak the truth (although you should be weary to trust them any more than this! :p ) i also was a nonscience major and the only thing i wish i would have known was to get familiar with biochem. and, like they said...don't worry, all of us current OMSI (almost OMSII...so close!) will be here to help. our class is taking pretty active steps to make sure our the OMSI and OMSII students are meshed pretty well.

but until school starts, i think you should ENJOY HAVING A LIFE...cuz it all goes away pretty fast. :D

I have enjoyed living alone, but it is very difficult to do on our budget... In regards to living with a classmate that you don't know yet, I seem to remember a quote, "Life is like a box of chocolates..."

Hello everyone, I will be joining you all this August! Congrats to everyone who has been accepted to the class of 2010 :)

Hello, everyone. I am Sally, and I am from Brea, California. I will be joining you guys in August, but I will be moving to Henderson in Mid-June. Don't forget to contact me if there is a get together (or party)!

Hi socalpremie...congrats on getting accepted! When are you moving out to Vegas? I interviewed with Sally and have been emailing with her so she already knows I'm happy she will be in our class next year. :)

Congratulations again. I look forward to meeting you!

Thanks bblue, it's great to hear from my fellow classmates! I'm from San Diego, CA and will probably be moving out there mid-July. Sally- my cousin lives in Brea and my sister also lives in Orange County :) I'm also looking forward to meeting everyone-TUCOMNV attracts an interesting bunch of people, so I think it will be fun getting to know everyone :) We should all plan on getting together B4 orientation!

Hey again socalpremie...
I was wondering what part of socal you're from. I grew up in L.A....seems like a lot of socaler's are in our class!? There is probably something already in the works, but if not, I definitely want to plan something for our class in mid/early July....assuming others are out there by then! Any ideas for a Touro-NV 2010 get together? Class of 2009, what worked for you?

~Brent

i grew up in San Diego. i moved around a little bit... Texas for a year and Chicago for a year, but live in SD now. most of my family is here in SD, I also have relatives in Orange County and Moreno Valley (Riverside area) so I am really happy to be going to medschool in LV...only a 5 hr. drive or short flight away! i'd be happy doing whatever pre-orientation, maybe we could all go out for a bite...

i am buying a new home(well my parents are) at the villas at black mountain, and so will have my house up for sale soon. Also, i have another classmate that will be selling his condo soon too.

if you were interested in my house or the condo, just shoot me a PM, and i will get that info for you.

otherwise, happy house hunting! :D[/QUOTE]

Hey there,

I'm going to check out the website put up regarding housing...but am actually looking more at purchasing a condo (with some help from my pops!). Do you know the range of prices for a 1 or 2 bdrm condo? The less expensive, but decent, the better....

Class of 2009 had many events planned in the summer before...

We first met up in Vegas in April in a "mini class trip" where we had a few parties and even a tour of the school (parts were still being built). Here is the agenda for our April Trip:

Friday April 1

Spice Market Buffet: “voted # 1 Buffet in Las Vegas”
**Meet at front of buffet at 6pm
Location: Aladdin Resort and Casino
3667 Las Vegas Blvd S.
Las Vegas, NV 89109

Party on the Strip: try your luck at one of the casinos on the strip, who knows maybe you will win enough to pay for medical school… or at least have a good time trying.
Location: as far as your feet will take you

Saturday April 2

Las Vegas/Henderson city tour
Travel with students to see apartments and housing

Touro University Tour: Visit the campus; meet with Roger Corbman and students from the class of 2008
**Meet at the school at 4pm
Location: 874 American Pacific Drive
Henderson, NV 89014

Potluck BBQ Banquet: Join us at Our Classmate's house for a little meal after the tour
Location: TBA

Club Pure: enjoy Las Vegas nightlife with this 36,000 square foot nightclub located inside Caesars Palace. House, re-mix, rock and Hip-Hop. RSVP required for VIP.
Location: Inside Caesars Palace
3570 S. Las Vegas Blvd
Las Vegas, NV 89109

Sunday April 3
***Daylight Savings, don’t forget to “spring forward”***

Brunch: TBA

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area: Explore the serenity of the Mojave Desert with a walk into the park. Bring water and hiking shoes. Time TBA
Location: West on Charleston Blvd (25min from strip)
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

We stayed in touch via email and a google list serve (I hear that you are using ezboard this year... that’s good because it is similar to the format you will be using next year for all your classes).

Then... the week before orientation... we planned an outing every day, starting a legacy of pre-parties that I would love to see Class of 2010 beat. I don't have the agenda for that week; maybe my classmates can help my memory...

I remember that we had a few BBQ parties, we rented a boat and one of our classmates had a speed boat so we spent the day on Lake Mead...

Point is, use your imagination... have fun... and even if you don't remember it... pretend like you will forever!

Hmm....that does sound tough to top, but I sure wouldn't mind trying  ! How do we get on the EZboard? Is that the best way to reach most of the 10'ers? If anyone is going to be in Vegas in July, we should try to set up some events throughout the month.

I don't live there, so I guess I couldn't give you the most insightful opinion of them, but I don't think they are that bad. There are definitely better apartments in the area, but these are cheap, and there seems to be a lot of people (including Touro students) our age that live there (which could definitely have its benefits :D ). Happy Easter!

The best way is to see the apartments for youself. Make a list of places, take a few days to come to Vegas and tour each one. Don't forget your digi cam to share your findings with your future classmates.

I think Class of 2010 has a ezboard site for you to meet each other. Get on that site as soon as you can, maybe you can share your findings about each apartment complex. You can share more personal info about yourself than you can on SDN.

Can someone from Class of 2010 help bblue out?

Good luck!

to get on the ezboard for the class of 2010, hit this link http://p103.ezboard.com/btuncomclassof2010 (or cut & paste it into address bar). You have to register for membership, log in with your new username/password, then apply for membership to the TUNCOM 2010 EZBoard.
hope this helps!

And if you have a question for the students who already go to TUNCOM and live in Vegas then you have to post it here... or PM us... because we can't get into the ezboard to talk to you

You're welcome.
So what has everyone been up to? I just started filling out all the financial aid and other registration forms...i can't tell you how stoked I am to take out more loans, yay! I've also been looking for homes in Henderson online, which is an OK start, but I definitely need to get out there for a few days to get more accomplished! Can any current students tell me the top few areas to buy a home in Henderson? I've heard the Villas at Black Mountain are nice and very close to school. Anyway, if you guys could rank 3 or 4 (or more) areas or communities, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks :)

Try looking at Green Valley Ranch or 89052 zip code...Legacy is also a nice area in 89074...
