Actually it was that page that confuses me. It is very clear for the contract states, but don't MA residents get a break too? The only other number on there is the $36,190. Do MA students get their break just through taxes?
It looks to me like there is a ~$5K tuition break for MA residents. See this chart: http://www.aavmc.org/vmcas/documents/AAVMCMemberSchoolChartupdated2007_000.pdf .

I also saw $5K referenced in some older articles I found... like this one http://media.www.tuftsdaily.com/med.../3.6-Million.Cut.For.Vet.School-1482191.shtml .

Maybe someone who knows more can confirm for us, but yeah, that's all I could find. 😕

Mass residents get a 15% break on tuition. So the actual number varies per year.

people interviewing at tufts this week should give feedback!

people interviewing at tufts this week should give feedback!

I agree. I'm surprised people haven't written anything. I guess they are probably just excited it's over. I am glad to have it done but I hate that we have to wait until the beginning of March to know the results.

Interview feedback as requested.... 🙂

I think that my interview went very well. However, with that said, I think these are the types of interviews where everyone comes out feeling really good about the entire experience. The interviewers are very relaxed and they do their best to make you feel completely relaxed. I had two very nice doctors (one was a DVM and one was a Ph.D.) and they were very silly and joked around for the first ten minutes and told me all about themselves. In the end, we just had a really nice forty minute conversation. We talked about me, about some specific ethical issues, and just vet medicine in general. Honestly, as long as you relax and try to appear confident (even if you're not!), I don't think you can go wrong. A lot of students that I talked to seemed to feel that the interview doesn't really make or break your application... it's more that they want to make sure you're not crazy and that you will work well in the class/school overall and be a good addition as a person, not just as an academic on paper.

Okay, well that's my two cents. i'm going to call admissions next week to ask about the time frame, although I think it's the first two weeks in march or thereabouts.

good luck to everyone else who still has to interview! Don't worry! If you made it this far, I'm sure you'll be great!

Who's going to what interview day at Tufts?

I'm going to the February 13th interview, and then heading up to the Sackler school after that. Anyone else on the 13th?

and wasn't that email from the students nice... it gave me a warm fuzzy feeling!

Hey, that's what I'm doing. But I didn't get an email from the students. 🙁

Apparently admissions matched prospective students with current (first year only?) students that had similar backgrounds/undergrads. So maybe there wasn't anyone that went to your undergrad/grew up in the same area you did. I don't know if they did this last year but I never heard from anyone. My person apparently didn't want any advice as they never replied! If you guys have questions you can PM and I will get back to you or you can PM me and I will send you my e-mail.

In response to what Sarah said about the interview not making or breaking you...they cut 2/3 of the peeps they interview, so it must be doing something selective. --Not to be a Debbie Downer, 'cause of course everyone in here will get in!
😛

I interviewed on Thursday. Went ... okay. Not going to say it was my best. 🙁 They just asked questions that were particular to me.

Does anyone know from last year when people start finding out their decision? Is it the first two weeks in March or can we call and see? I'm so curious!

I remember last year I found out like the first week of March (March 6th to be exact)... and I found out via an email saying the admissions committee had decided and then they told you to log onto their status page to find out... then a few days later I got the actual letter in the mail.... I was not one of their early decision acceptances... so I am not sure how much earlier those guys found out nor do I know how they found out (ie: phone, email, status page)....

Hope that helps a bit 🙂

I'm officially giving up hope unless someone on this site can prove otherwise-

For those of us on the waitlist for interviews...are they done taking people off of it? I'm guessing there's no way admissions will call us tomorrow and say 'get here by Wednesday to interview"

It sucks! Us waitlisters were SO close!!

Soxbox, thanks for letting me know. Ugh, that seems like so long to wait!!! I like the instant gratification type of deals. 😉

I have to agree that I think the interview can make or break you. In my case last year it broke me... I was told in my postmortem that I didn't show enough passion so I am guessing my interview pushed me below the line. Here is what soxbox wrote to me last year after I had my really bad interview to show how the interview counts in case anyone is interested. I'm not sure if you want to add anything again soxbox......

So some insider info from working at Tufts for the last few years and talking with various vets who served or are serving on the admissions committee...basically how it works is that everyone is put into a giant spreadsheet based first on grades/GREs... this is how they make the initial "cut"... so its pretty much straight forward a numbers game... then they "score" your experience, recommendations, and personal statement to help get down to the 240 they interview... then your interview score gets put in... if you were a strong candidate to begin with, you would basically have to completely screw up your interview (ie: not speak or give absolutely ridiculous answers) to knock you out of the competition. The interviews are given scores that go into this spreadsheet... I am not sure where the cutoff is, but the top x number in this final spreadsheet are automatically in... then the last x amount (lets just say from numbers 60-100.. so some within the top 80 and then the next closest amount) are discussed amongst the different interviewers and admissions committee... Then a final order is made including waitlisters... they meet for about 1-2 weeks after interviews to finalize their list... Oh yeah, and of course then your residency comes into play somehow into that whole thing as well... 50% of the class must be from MA....
So yes your interview matters if you were in the bottom percent of that spreadsheet but its overall just a small portion of everything they look at. If you had a strong application before the interview, dont worry!!! I hope this helps a bit 🙂

Sarah didn't you love those two interviewers? I think I had the same ones. They made me so comfortable which made it much better than my experience last year.

Oh and also we found out March 6th last year by email to check the status page unless you were extra special like some and got a early admission letter by March 1st. I think they were received by March 1st and dated Feb 27th. The frustrating thing about the regular email was that it came around 2pm and said check your status at 5. It was torture waiting those three hours.

Yes they were amazingly nice and I was completely relaxed about the whole thing. It was such a different kind of interview from mine at Ohio, where I was totally stressed out. What time was your interview? I probably saw you...

And just to clarify about the "making or breaking" your application thing... Overall I think your interview can break your application--I mean if you totally screwed it up, then yeah, it's going to make a difference. But in talking to the current students who hung around us for a while, they all said something along the lines of this-- "everyone's already ranked, so you can't change that, and in the interview, they just want to make sure you aren't some sort of crazy person who looks good on paper, but in person is just strange"... i heard something like that from three different vet students... so it's gotta mean something.

Anyhow, it's going to be a long few weeks... oy vey.

Sarah

Is anyone interviewing at the vet school on the 13th (or 14th)? I'm interviewing for the DVM/PhD and am slightly confused about my schedule.

Yeah I agree. What you said goes along with what Soxbox said last year. If you have a stellar application to begin with you are probably already at the top of the ranking so the interview makes little difference. But for some like me who have below average GRE scores and an average GPA, I hope the interview is more important. I was definitely on the line last year so I think I could have only gotten in if I really did well in the interview, which apparently I did not. I think I did well on my interview this year so I hope it is enough to push me over to acceptance instead of the waitlist again. But who knows maybe the interview can only do so much for those lower on the list. I interviewed at 2 o'clock on the 6th. You weren't the person so told me they were really nice when you came out of your interview were you?

I have my interview this Wednesday. I can't find any information on check in or anything though. Do we just go to the Mayer Administration Building sometime during the day and check in?

yes, you just arrive at the admin. building (park right out front) and visit the table just inside the door, pick up a name tag and they give you a schedule for the day and some information about your interviewers. among the activities are a quick info. session about the combined degree programs, financing vet med degree and tour. good luck out there on wednesday.

Funny enough, I had a better interview at Ohio! At Tufts I think I did okay but it was no where near as conversational as Ohio's. It must depend upon the interviewers and the dynamics between them and you? I interviewed on the 7th and had my Ohio interview on the 8th.

Yeah it definitely depends. Last year when I interviewed at Tufts it wasn't very conversational. It was just question after question but no real responses from them. In the interview feedback section for Tufts some people had similar experiences where it was a lot more intimidating. I know Sarah and I had the same interviewers and I could hear them laughing up a storm when they were interviewing her and they were equally as giggly when they talked to me. I guess they are the ones who give Tufts a good reputation for being casual and conversational. I think everyone should interview like that. I don't see the point in being mean and intimidating. Applying is hard enough without making the interview painful too. You can still weed out the nuts and be fun at the same time. One of my interviewers told me that when she interviewed at Tufts they did good cop/ bad cop on her which must have been interesting...

I kind of felt that way too! Although it wasn't really "bad cop," it was more like "tired, questioning cop." That one would ask a question, I would start to answer, and then the other one and I would get into conversation which go off in a totally different direction. Then the "bad cop" would ask another question. Although, in her defense, it was pretty late in the day, and they had been interviewing for quite a while.

haha... yes i'm sure it was interesting... at one point in my interview she called herself "a feisty little bugger!"

Well all I can say is that I'm glad I got my two interviewers and not some of the more intimidating ones... and I totally agree that everyone should interview like ours did... in fact, they probably get a better picture of applicants because they are more relaxed... makes more sense anyway you look at it.

Is there anyone here who knows someone at Tufts who would like to share their experiences? I heard that a lot of Tufts students end up not liking it, but I don't want to believe that unless I hear it directly from students.

Hmmm...I'm surprised to hear that. I don't know what other folks have or haven't liked about Tufts, but I'll list a bit about my own experiences. If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to answer them here or via PM.

Things I like:
-Early intro to clinical stuff: clinical skills class once a month starting first semester of first year, work opportunities in both hospitals, selectives program that gets you clinical or research experience (or gets you relationships with area clinics/researchers)
-Enter clinics in March of third year
-Large and varied SA and LA hospital case loads
-Strong anatomy program: we've had several guest anatomy lab lecturers who say they are very impressed with the depth of our program, the range of animals we work with, etc.
-PBL component augments traditional lecture-based curriculum
-Supportive faculty, staff and administration
-Supportive students: 2nd and 3rd years frequently hold review sessions for us 1st year prior to big exams
-Collaborative environment: we really help each other learn the material
-Diversity in student experience: some of our classmates come from very different backgrounds and have some varied experiences, both professional and personal, to share
-A lot of continuing education stuff by way of lunchtime lectures, evening lectures, etc.

Things I'm not crazy about:
-Rural location: Culture shock for me, having lived in a large city for 15 years (though on the upside, parking on campus is plentiful and $5/year).
-No student center or gym: though one is being built (with gym) and should be done by summer, I think.

Hope this helps!

Thanks RunnerDC I completely agree (other than the rural location but I don't like cities) but was having issues being eloquent! I am also willing to answer questions.

Thanks guys! I really didn't want to decide either way until I heard something directly from students. I'll try to contact the person who said they didn't like it and see why that is.

So I had the most wonderful surprise today...

the week after my interview I sent thank you notes to both of my interviewers... pretty standard procedure. Then today I got an email from one of my interviewers! I've never had something like that happen before, so I'm hoping it's not standard procedure. 😉 basically he was like, "thanks so much for your nice letter... it was a pleasure interviewing you. I don't know where you rank, but I will tell you that I hope you end up at Tufts next year. I'm pulling for you."

I was 😱... it was a totally unexpected response... I mean, I didn't expect anyone to respond to a thank you note... especially since I didn't put my email on the letter, so he had to go look it up...

okay so I just had to say something because I'm so excited and it totally made my day. 😀

-Sarah

That's super Sarah! I sent a 'thank you' via email to my tufts interviewers that one of interviewer responded to very nicely as well. It was more of a "I liked getting to know you and good luck." It must have been great to get your response! Good luck! We should be hearing soon-ish.

*Warning Nerd alert*

I am going crazy waiting for Tufts to decide my future since it is the one and only school I want to go to/applied to, so please forgive me for being such a dork....BUT....

Last year extra special early admissions people had letters mailed to them Tues Feb 27th, the year before it was Tues Feb 28th, so I assume those same special few will have their letters mailed Tues Feb 26th this year.....

Last year regular folks got email notification Tues March 6th, the year before it was Tues March 7th, SO I assume we will get the same email notification this coming Tuesday, March 4th!

I know, sad how I spend my time, but I just can't stop wondering if I got in. I can't wait for this to be over... unless I get waitlisted and then it continues all summer....

don't worry i'm in the same boat with you... it's all i'm thinking about.

I even emailed them this afternoon to ask what the time frame will be... i'll let you know if i hear anything back...

Word! It's down to Tufts & Western (see: The Great Western Wait) for me. I'm dyin'! I can't focus on anything else! I can't talk about anything else--I must be driving everyone around me nuts!

I sent out thank you emails....and no such responses found their way into my mailbox!!!

So to the person that posted the pros and cons of tufts....where could i find out whether that student center's going to be finished and what its going to include? NEED GYM!!!
Thanks
Good luck to everyone

Someone posted an interview evaluation and was asked about brazilian jujitsu. By chance if YOU see this send me a private message. If we both end up at TUFTS i want someone to train with.
Capoeira too....

I believe the student center will be done this summer. And yes it will have a gym. They just got the funding for adding on a lecture hall but it won't change the plan for the main campus center I think that will be done in 2009. If I'm remembering this wrong someone please post.

Don't worry, krodriguez, I do the same thing. Hey, that's what this site is for right...😳? Good speculations though...I agree.

Yep, exactly as Angelo84 says is what I know...student center w/ gym should be done sometime this summer. If for some reason it's not, there are several gyms very close to campus that allow you to join on a month-to-month basis with no initiation fee. This is what I do now. But I understand you: for the student fees we're paying, we shouldn't have to pay out-of-pocket for a gym, too!

Any news?

not a peep from them... though if you are correct, and they are mailing letters this week and next, they may not bother to reply...

Did you all also get the email from the Financial Aid office at Tufts today?!?!?

but i have not logged on as i am not running netscape or i.e. on this computer. i imagine it is a checklist of forms they have/have not rec'd.

Did you all also get the email from the Financial Aid office at Tufts today?!?!?

Yeah I got it too. I never got the info packet that they said they sent out in Jan. so I am scrambling to get that stuff all done.

Yeah I got it too. At first I was all excited seeing that I had a "Tufts ID #" but then I checked back and I got it last year too and I was an alternate. I also found a conversation on last year's forum where someone said everyone who had an interview got the fin-aid letter. So I guess it's not all that exciting 🙁 but still for about 2 seconds I was like Tufts ID!!? what!?

They were definitely encouraging EVERYONE who was at the interview to fill out all the necessary financial aid forms. I think it's because they need time to get their financial offers together by the beginning of April, and if people wait until they get accepted to even start filling out those forms, it might take too long.

But I still don't see why they just can't make a decision already!

If you check the acceptance thread it looks like someone got an early admissions acceptance letter. I guess that means the rest of us will find out this coming Tuesday! Yay!
