Tufts?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

What's up guys. I'm a first year at Tufts, thought I would share my thoughts on the admissions process here since it is a slightly different situation from a lot of other schools. I was lucky enough to get in right off the bat after my interview. I say that Tufts is slightly different than other schools because of the extremely high total cost of the school. I think a lot of people who get into Tufts before May 15th or whatever hold onto their spot hoping to get into somewhere either more desirable than Boston (as was my case) or cheaper... ie a state school. That is one situation that tends to move the wait-list along more quickly than you might find at other schools... the cost scares a lot of people off.

Another scenario that might explain why they either defer a decision on you or wait-list you is that people are holding multiple spots up until the deadline, and then they might drop Tufts when they hold onto that one school's acceptance after May 15th. I can tell you from experience talking to some of the prospective students that many of those that interviewed early were "highly motivated" so to speak... ie it was like October and they were on their 10th interviews already (read: they turned their applications in the second past midnight June 1st or whatever). So it could be that these types are still holding Tufts from when they got in 7 months ago, and since the admissions office can't give out more acceptances at any time than they have potential spots, there could be a flood of acceptances coming off the wait list soon.

I do know that approximately 50-60% of those who interview end up getting in eventually, but that might not be until August when you find out. I would have to say that at least half of the people I know from my class were wait-listed for some period of time, but that the wait-list really does have a lot of turnover. The main reason for that turnover is the cost... Tufts is a solid med school, and the only drawback for most people is the cost of tuition and the cost of living in Boston. I'm not the biggest Boston fan myself, but I'm not from anywhere near the Northeast. Anyway, if you guys get put on the wait-list, you really have a good shot at getting in... class size is 170 by the way, so there is probably plenty of spots up for grabs this summer. Good luck.

I got the waitlist letter today too. 😡

I was surprised though to get the letter so soon after the mailing.

I hate waiting for a definitive answer from them, but guess what, I'm going to learn to be more patient I guess.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what their typical financial aid package consists of?

well..the issue is that if tufts is your #1 choice, and you don't get in until august, you eventually just have to go with your #2 school in july because you have to search out a cheap apartment in the city of your second choice school.

the sad part is that tufts loses out on a number of good students and a number of good students lose out on going to a really good school because at some point, you just have to make a decision about where you're going....

I got waitlisted at Tufts also.......what our are chances???? the waitlist faq said a third of the class is off the waitlist.... 😕

I'm into Jefferson, but would prefer to go to Tufts for reasons relating to my wife's education. Can I stay on the Tufts waitlist after the Aug. 4 orientation date at Jeff? I'm almost sure, no.

Should I tell Tufts that I have to know my status one way or another by Aug. 4?

you are out of the game once you start orientation.

yeah, the best bet would be to call them like every day for the two weeks before you go beggin them to decide. i bet it doesnt come to that though. i am in hte same sit, nymc starts aug 1. i think we will hear by the end of june and if not, then my hope will dwindle anyway.

I have a friend who is a 4th year med student at Tufts. He got off the waitlist. He tells me that everyone that he knows at Tufts got of the waitlist except for one person...
However, the Tufts website does say between 12 to about a 1/3 of the class gets of the waitlist.. I think this is BS.. I think it is a lot more than a 1/3....

yea once you matriculate you cant go accept any other offers. i've kinda set an end of june deadline for tufts cuz it will take some time to find a place in philly if it comes to that.

for those of you also on the waitlist...i've been told to call the admissions office often to express my interest...i really dont know how to go about doing this. once they pick up what exactly do i say w/o sounding lame? i would ask to check my status on the w/l but if tufts does not rank their w/l like they say they do...im going to get the same answer every day dont you think?

Honestly I don't see how calling every day will help anything... probably you get an assistant on the phone who must get tired of these meaningless calls all the time. The letter mentioned that email was the best way to keep in touch, especially later in the summer. I think a letter every 2 weeks is better than calling every day. Thats what I plan to do, anyway.

Bridgie-I was accepted at NYMC and waitlisted at Tufts too! Its such a bummer!! I really want to go to Tufts, but if not, I'll still get a solid medical education (I'll keep telling myself that).
But HOPEFULLY, everyone who's waitlisted who WANTS to go to Tufts will get in!
Best of luck to everyone.

waitlisted is v. good at Tufts.. I was admitted off the WL in mid-July 2001 and am winding down my second year now. I would guess that more than a third of my class was admitted from the waitlist, and I know only 5 non-BA/MD students who were accepted directly (not put on hold or anything). Last year nearly every SDNer who was waitlisted at Tufts got in, so y'all have nothing to worry about. G'luck!

BTW, most people I've met did decline other schools in favor of Tufts (NYMC, Finch, MCP (now Drexel), SUNY-Upstate, and BU seemed to the schools people most often declined here). One girl even declined CWRU so that she could live here with her fiance, a Harvard grad student. I personally declined SLU (also a WL accept for me) in favor of Tufts, although I did think SLU was a great school as well.

Good luck!

Hi Bridgie, I'm pleasantly surprised to find you in here. Haven't seen you on the International board for ages. What happened about Ireland? Have you been accepted to medical school for this year?

Regards,

Des
