UC Davis c/o 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Last year I found a link online with a video recording of the student panel that was a couple of years old (they may have included it in the interview invite, even). This way I felt like I got some "inside info" and wasn't out of the loop.

Thanks, that does help. But isn't there another part of the orientation that is for only those applicants with interviews, and which is not published online? I remember watching the video last year, but seem to remember there was something else going on for only those with interviews. I could be completely making this up.

I didn't go to the workshop last year because of Illinois interviews, and I don't really feel like I missed out on much. They won't really tell you anything most people don't already know, I think.

Yes, only the morning part (the Q&A panel) is open to all pre-vets and others who don't necessarily have interview invitations. Lunch and afterwards are for interviewees only, and the last few years there have been tours of the VMTH/classroom/lab facilities given by current students, presentations by financial aid/students/faculty/etc, and other randomness intended to educate about the school and admission process. It's pretty fun and informational, and I think a lot of people who felt that our admissions process and school were more impersonal than other schools had their minds changed by the orientation. 🙂

I'm hoping to be able to participate in some capacity, as well. I'm sure I'll be there during lunch, if nothing else!

edit: also this year since we've got a new curriculum coming up, I think that Dr. Ilkiw or somebody will be giving a presentation on the new curriculum at either the workshop or orientation, so that might be an added incentive to attend if you can...

Well, of course. The day is from 10-5, and the panel isn't that long, lol. They have a lunch, and then show you where the interview will be taking place. They also probably give tours of the campus.

The day you interview it will literally just be the interview - 20 minutes and that's it. No food, no tours, no open house. So they use this workshop day to answer any of your questions and allow you to get a feel for the school.

Again, since I didn't go last year I can't tell you the day's itinerary. I knew I would go to Davis no matter what if accepted, and I had already toured the campus at a prior point. The day before my interview I popped into the building and located the interview room so I knew where I'd be heading the following day. And the day of my interview I sat-in on two classes (set up through my interview host).

I wouldn't stress about the situation at all! Personally I think going to the workshop would have made me much more nervous - you know, sitting in a room full of "my competition." This way I could just focus on myself and forget about the other interviewee's.

Yup, good advice. I will just hope that it gets to the point where I even need to worry about that.

I haven't seen much of the school, so if I do get an interview, is there another way for me to get a tour since I won't be going on the 19th?

I think you can set one up formally, but you have to go out of your way to do so (not that it's hard at all, but the school doesn't offer them 'every hour on the hour' like other schools do on interview days).

I would recommend just asking your interview host to take you around (if/when you get an interview invite, you fill out a brief online survey so they can match you with a host [someone to answer any of your questions and meet you on your interview day]). The formal tour I went on was really long and went through the entire teaching hospital for 1.5 hours. While it is really impressive (!!!), I think it would be better to have a student take you around and show you the classrooms and labs - the places you'll be living your first two/three years. I always think a student's perspective is better and you can ask real 😉 questions (vs. a formal tour given by an old man, haha).

Im one of the liaisons to the class of 2015 (ie im a current first year who is helping to set up the interview orientation and will be helping to transition you guys from applicants and interviewees to first year students 🙂 )

Anyhow, Moosenanny and Nyanko are right on pretty much all counts.

The afternoon of the interview orientation (the interviewees only part) will include a talk on the new curriculum and a chance to hear more about the school from the 2014 class presidents and a professor or professors. There will also be a talk on financial aid and tours of the school offered.

There will be current vet students at the lunch (both from the panel and additional students) mingling with interviewees to answer questions and chat with you guys about UCD. Also at the lunch will be representatives from a few of our student clubs.

If you can't make the orientation :

The mornings question and answer session will be recorded this year and hopefully posted online within a few days of the orientation.

If still want a tour of the campus etc, you will have a chance to be paired with a current student on the day of (or before) your interview to show you around, answer your questions and maybe let you sit in on a class or two.

Hope this helped answer some questions.... back to studying for tomorrows neuro exam... good luck guys, the wait is almost up 🙂.

If we get an interview but can't make it to the orientation (Illinois weekend + that would be a ton of traveling back and forth)... then do we miss out completely on all the interviewee-only talks? I wish they did everything on the same day of the interview!

The reason things are done the way they are with regards to the orientation stuff at UCDavis is that the interviews are scheduled over a period of weeks, not all in a couple days like some other schools do. It's not feasible to have all of those things on every interview day - so it's just done once, at the beginning of interviews.

Like LS said though, you can be assigned an "interview host," a current first year who can help you out with questions you might have or tours or anything else - if you can't come to the orientation you can still at least have a point of contact!

Oh yeah, makes sense, I forgot about that. 😳

Also, last year they posted the previous years interview panel. So even if they are slow at uploading the new Q&A, you can still look at the one from the prior year. Usually they post the panel right when notices go out. =) Good luck everyone!!!!

Thanks for the info c/o 2014! I was curious what the "interview orientation" entailed. It sounds really welcoming and well planned. I think I'm most interested to hear about the curriculum changes... but I'll see if I even make it to that point

Although that doesn't always work out. Mine blew me off, and there was no one to even show me the facilities for some reason (which I can't quite remember). I would suggest trying to get to the orientation if at all possible!

The reason is you didn't ask on here because there were a lot of us on here who said we would have!! 😉

I stand corrected...

I restate my original post:
" I highly recommend you go to orientation OR ask on here where there are many people who would be willing to unofficially show you around.

Consider it a backup plan in case your official host flakes out (or has to study for an exam or whatever).

Just wanted to say that I will be on the interview workshop panel (along with some of my awesome classmates) 😀 I hope to meet all of you on the 19th!

And to further tantalize you, there is a sign up in Valley reserving some of our study rooms for interviews from February 23rd to March 14th. Don't quote me on the last date, but get excited guys!

Cool. I'm so tired of waiting, either way it turns out.

Oo, thanks for the update. The next couple weeks will be really scary, hearing from all my schools. It looks like the last day they send interview invites is the 18th and if you don't hear at that point, you can assume you are rejected but not hear anything for another week. Boo, I don't like that!

Let's roll out the red carpet for some good news coming soon!

hello all... it has begun! i just got invited for an interview!! i am in shock right now....

catscatscats, way to get the party started. Congrats!!

CONGRATS!!! Awesome news! There will surely be more good news around the corner - hopefully for all of you :luck:

Yay! Interview invite received today... it's my IS and I'm super excited. 🙂

I have no idea in which order notifications get sent out. I personally think it's totally random -- I was one of the very first people to get an interview invite, and one of the very last to hear I was accepted (especially due to the Midwestern time zone). Don't over-analyze things - you will drive yourself :scared: crazy.

it is physically impossible to stop obsessively checking my email LOL!

I promised myself I wouldn't let applications get to me. And I've been doing fairly well. Until right now. :scared:

Not that I'm particularly expecting an interview invite, but still.

I know last year I was told by Admissions that the email system only allows them to send them in batches or else it kicks them back as spam. So, I know it is hard, but just breath! =)
Best of luck everyone, we are all rooting for you!!! :xf:

Another interview invite here, OOS, got it a few hours ago. I had no idea they were coming so soon, I figured it was spam and ignored it til now. Great surprise. Hopefully I can swing a trip out to interview and meet everyone. I went to college in SoCal, but the Davis area seems a bit more my speed

Congrats to those of you with invites already and good luck to everyone still waiting!! 😀 Davis is an amazing school and I'm super proud to be a student here, so it's always exciting when invites start going out.

If anyone wants a tour of the facilities or VMTH while they're here, shoot me a PM.

it is physically impossible to stop obsessively checking my email LOL!

I know the feeling! Oddly enough, since I was flying all day yesterday, I didn't know these were coming out -- so I wasn't checking like crazy. I was SHOCKED when I got mail from Davis! SO EXCITED NOW! :xf::xf: Have you heard yet, Savethewhales?? :luck:

Unfortunately I was not accepted this year 🙁 I am totally bummed, I really wanted to get out of Iowa, it is sooo cold here! If Iowa State doesn't accept me this year I'll try again next year.

But I was wondering if it is appropriate to ask why I was rejected and maybe how to improve my application. Anyone know how to go about doing this?

thanks

Got my interview invite 🙂 IS 1043 applicants, 220 interviews granted for 133 spots 🙂 GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

Sorry to hear about your rejection, bigcatlover.

They won't start scheduling file reviews until after the admission cycle is complete, and the office isn't really heavily staffed so I'd suggest waiting until late April/early May to try to schedule one. They'll do it over the phone for people who can't make it in.

I was thinking the same thing! If I get rejected on the 14th that holiday will be so much worse....

I JUST GOT AN INTERVIEW!!!!! its my dream school and IS and I seriously never thought this would happen! SOOOO happy, congrats to everyone else as well!

That is interesting, because as an undergrad at Davis they sent out mass emails to us all the time.

I just did several leaping pirouettes through the C terminal at Seattle International Airport. I also have a creepy smile on my face that won't go away. people are definitely afraid to sit near me.

got an interview to the big show (davis). huzzah.

All I know is what they told me, and as a vet student here, parts of the class will get the same emails at different times of the day.
Glad that your undergrad could mass mail you though. =)

That is interesting, because as an undergrad at Davis they sent out mass emails to us all the time.

Sending out interview invitations from the vet admissions office to e-mail addresses at a number of different domains is pretty different from the office of the Chancellor or whatever sending out mass emails to everyone with a @ucdavis.edu email address (for the latter they use campus listservs). 😛

Last year a bunch of us had our interview invitation emails get lost in at least one batch they sent out (they ended up having to call the people who didn't contact them by the end of the next week!), so they're being pretty cautious with it. I know it's tough but be patient. 🙂

Tigerkitten, just got my invite thanks
for asking.

Perhaps the invites are sent in batches since each applicant has to call for their interview time. Could you imagine 220 excited pre vets all trying to call at the same time lol
