I didn't say we were "very impressive"- I said we're strong.

Just to clear things up - I was speaking generally, not directly in response to your post. 👍

in at d, waiting on i...i know there are tons of threads on this...but what are people's thoughts on how the 2 compare?

UCI: great location, great clinical experiences in orange county, PRIME-LC

UCD: pass/nonpass, UC Davis Medical Center, new medical education building, student-run clinics

They are both great schools, I really think you have to base it on location and where you want to be.

These stats are very weak- but may point to something if you want to consider your chances for successfully returning.

Using the 2006 match- about 60% stayed in California. Casually looking at NRMP match, SF match, Osteo Match, and throwing a few under the table nonmatch residencies statewide- I am guessing there are about 2500-2600 total residencies available in Calif.

According to the CMA- there are about 1400 graduating seniors in California every year from UC's, privates, and osteo programs. There are approx. 2000-2500 Californians who attend school out of state.

I take this to mean in 2006 that 700-800 positions were taken by in staters. That left about 1800 open. I will say that very few positions were left to scramble. Don't forget about FMG's and DO's.

I assume you are referring to reputation. In considering UCI- remember the fertility and liver scandals.

I am from OC, and while I would like to have the luxury of being near home and the ocean, I would be concerned about the perceptions the institution has unfortunately becomed marred with.

Davis is no Mecca- but it has been creeping up the respect ladder over the last 7-10 years and I think it will continue to do so.

The UCI Plant is being replaced- but due to budgetary concerns only the existing facilities can be replaced- no expansions are authorized unless things change.

UCD on a positive note has been rumored to be in the black consistently every year. There is a lot of expansion going on. They really need to expand the class size over the magical 100. One crapnote- they did not plan for anatomy theatres at the new site- really stupid.... Students will have to go to Davis the first trimester for anatomy.

UCI students study the first and second years at the main campus- then go to UCIMC the 3rd and 4th- just like at the old Davis.

thanks for the response. i'm dumb...would you mind explaining this phrase?? 😳

Budgetary balance sheet- these are old terms they used to describe the color of ink in the ledger in the red=in the negative in the black= in the positive.

Red=over budget
Black=within budget

I'm opposite - in at I, waiting on D. My thoughts:

Davis Pros, compared to Irvine:
- Pass/No Pass
- Less lecture hours than Irvine (Personally, im not a fan of classtime, I'd like to minimize it)
- Soon-to-be integrated campus (teaching facilities and hospitals in Sacramento), while Irvines hospitals will remain seperate from campus
- Scandals are a thing of the past, while Irvines remain current
- Lower cost of living in Sac-town
- Top notch student run clinics (or so they say 🙂)

Davis Cons:
- Semi-new curriculum that will have wrinkles to iron out
- Potentially disrupted first semester as campus moves to Sacramento
- No 5-year MD/MBA (important to me)
- Central valley not appealing to some

I'm sure there are more issues at hand, but these are my initial thoughts. I would give the edge to Irvine, but honestly, I'm a bit worried about the future reputation of the school. The school overextended itself trying to be like UCSD and UCLA, and many of the clinical programs are facing serious problems, much like the liver transplant program. CMS' review of the hospital system found several shortcomings that UCI has vowed to quickly address, but I fear long reprecussions in the eyes of the medical community. Thoughts?

Haha looks like someone shares my concerns. 🙂

You found something we agree on... Much assumed and discussed on the application trail- probably mostly from those not in the know- but isn't that fromwhence reputation frequently is derived?

If I had to pick over again- I'd still come back here.

I had a great time at my interview. I think the school seems to be going in a good direction. Only time will tell.

**** BUT*****

Right after my interview, I was cruising through Sac to go by my clinic and get my paystub, and I end up behind a Ford Explorer with a bumper sticker that immediately made me think of SDN:

"Chuck Norris doesn't dodge bullets, because they know better."

It was exactly what I needed at the end of an interview day.

mmm called davis today. apparently no decision had been made about me. interviewed back in mid january.

The new building won't be ready in August. The first quarter will be done nearly entirely in Davis, but there will be some shuttling back and forth between the two campuses. Shuttles are provided by the Medical center.

Hey Luisito! Thanks very much. Everyone was super cool, and I know the med center pretty well, so it was a mellow day for me.
As for the new building-
This is what we were told:
First quarter in Davis, starting the beginning of August instead of the end of Sept.
Second Quarter is when they hope to have all the med students moving to Sac permanently. The med students I met seemed pretty excited about the new curriculum.

That's what I know.

Have an awesome Saturday. I'm gonna go ski... 😀

Both are going to be taken care of. Davis is applying or is going to apply for more students per class since the new facilities in Sacramento will be able to accomodate 125-140 students per class. The only restriction before was the classroom sizes, though Tupper 180 did look like it could accomodate more.
According to one of the administrators, it is almost a guarantee that the expansion will be approved.

The anatomy classes will be at the Sac campus. They are looking to convert a location in one of the faculty support buildings into the TEMPORARY anatomy lab. There will be anatomy facilities for the class after the upcoming one. But since most think that the first semester (Class of 2010 will be on a semester system) will be at Davis, they'll probably have anatomy at Tupper for one final year.

I just interviewed today, and it was quite clear that the class is full. Now, that only means that over 93 acceptances have been given out, it doesnt mean that no more acceptances will be offered. More will come, it will just take more time than any of us want to wait. For those that interviewed recently or will interview in the near future, don't expect any positive news from Davis until June 🙁

Then you've also got to remember that some folks who were on hold, like myself, have personal situations that require them to make a decision before May and, hence, eliminate another potential future waitlist spot from being taken by withdrawing from further consideration.

All the best to those of you waiting it out. This whole process is nuts - UCD had been my first choice all along. I was interviewed in Nov, then put on hold in Jan, and just withdrew my application after deciding to attend another program. At first it was a little disappointing to be put on hold, but you know, the glass is either half full or half empty. Taking the half full approach I realized that another school that accepted me in Oct was the best situation for me and my family. Now that I've eliminate the question of where I should go, it's full steam ahead.
