If any adcoms from UCD read this, I'LL TAKE IT. PLEASE???? :luck: :luck:

I actually have a letter to Dr Bera on my table to be sent out. Davis is where I belong, I'm convinced of it, and I am really excited for you folks who are going to the second look weekend. Have an awesome time. hopefully i'll be joining the Davis family at some point!

hi all

just wanted to keep this thread alive...
i got back from my davis interview today, interviewed this morning....i think it went well, but it's also a bit late
i also wanted to share some info. that i'm sure ed dadang shared with you on int. day
so far, they've accepted 115 students, and will be holding their last int. session a week from today. he said that as of right now, there's no waitlist, meaning people can still be offered acceptances...

i think it's going to be a while before i hear something back...how long approx. did it take some of you?

consider this my "bump"

btw...i loved davis, the student clinics, the advance/new facilities....i think i could really fit in there...i'll just have to keep my fingers crossed

Saw a bunch of people interviewing today. Man, Davis is slow this year, interviewing until mid-april. You're lucky and came on the only sunny day in the past three weeks. We first years got off at 12 today, so you might not have seen us. Traditionally, twice the number of acceptances are offered as there are seats, so quite a few people will still get in through straight acceptance or waitlist. Good luck!

I withdrew from Davis a couple of weeks ago, and I'm sure that others have withdrawn their acceptances as well...so more spots will be open also during these interviews. Good luck todos!

I sent in an LOI, even though I haven't heard anything yet.

I want to go to Davis so badly, and I hope I conveyed that well.
Thanks Elastase, for withdrawing (I'll take your spot if any adcoms are reading this...)
Thanks Uegis for your posts on here.
There are some super cool people in the first year class (like Joanna) who I met on my interview day, and that made me want to attend all the more- very cooperative folks, mellow and down-to-earth. My kind of school.

hey niki, i hope you get in too, i am a super wilderness buff and it seems we could have a great time not studying and instead backpacking in the spring and skiing in the winter, ever checked out the wilderness medicine website? there are some really cool survival/wilderness medicine electives i want to do come fourth year, spending a month in the utah backcountry, etc., good luck!

Hey, if I get in (please let me in!), I'm definitely joining you guys on the hike and outdoor activities!

Thanks for the update about the current situation at Davis. Hopefully they'll hand out more acceptances soon. Pick me!

Thanks for the tips Lobster--I sent my letter in!

Hmm..I wonder why they have not accepted the 200 they said they would. Or have that many people declined? I thought someone said they are accepting people on hold even before the may 15 date just to fill the class. 😕

that's interesting...but the numbers i got came from mr. dadang and he says they're the most uptodate....
he did provide numbers from last year...and a little over 200 were accepted for the 93 spots...
maybe i'm reading into this, but does the 200 number include waitlist....or just direct acceptances?
has anyone received a waitlist notification? From what he said, a waitlist doesn't even exist yet...so i guess most of you just haven't heard back?

virluminous said:

Because a lot of people are still holding on to multiple acceptances right now. So if they have 93 people that said they will come for NOW, then they will not overaccept like some schools do. Instead, as people start withdrawing, more will be accepted, presumably from the new interviewees or the holds (someone got off of hold already, so they are taking people from that list).

And in response to Bruin, the waitlist is generated after May 15th. The newly vacated spots from those who withdrew after May 15th will be filled first from the HOLD LIST. Then those left over from the hold list will be either waitlisted or rejected. They will continue to draw from the ranked waitlist as people withdraw from the class up until the day of class in early August. I guess starting early August is one drawback for those waiting for a spot since once school starts, no one would be taken off anymore. We started in late September last year and some of my classmates got in during September.

Come May 15th, quite a few more spots will open up. A few people from SDN alone got in during that time period last year. I had to wait a little longer than that. Good luck folks!

This is pretty much included above, but they said that they will accept people before May 15th in order to keep the class full if folks withdraw between now and then (they were a few over 93 when I interviewed). They said on average, by the time classes have started in the past, that they have eventually accepted 200 in total including those taken from the waitlist generated in May. So, it sounds like there are about 85 or so folks on hold or just recently interviewed who will get in when it is all said and done.

Best of luck! :luck: 👍

**confused**

what is this HOLD LIST? Is it a possible post-interview decision?
if that's correct, then the order is acceptance >> Hold >> Waitlist >> Reject ?

any clarification on this

Initially post-interview, there are three fates. You either get accepted, rejected, or placed on hold. VERY small amount of people get rejected or accepted. Instead, the majority of the people are placed into the hold category. This is not a waitlist, but they can choose to take people from there as the application progresses. (It seems there is a high priority list within this hold list. It's like they want to accept you but the class is full, so they put you in hold and let you in when there are spots open. So this is a subset within the hold list. This is purely conjecture and from past observations).

So as the cycle winds down and they are done interviewing, they will fill the class. Then comes May 15th when there are massive amount of withdrawls. They will then re-review those on the hold list. Then they will fill the class from the hold list until they get 93 people that say they will go to Davis.

The people left over from the hold list has two fates - either they get rejected or placed on the OFFICIAL waitlist. This list is ranked and usually numbers around 100 people. As people withdraw during the summer, they will go downthe ranked list and pull people from there.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I went through the same thing last year and really dug up a lot of info on the hold/waitlist business.

Uegis,

As to the hold list/notification... is it by phone? I've heard that if you're not in range you get passed up - is this true? This rumor has me slightly panicked, due to the fact that I will hopefully be in wilderness environments on/off throughout May/June. I can have my mom be a proxy for me I guess, or a friend?
Assuage my fear, please...
PS I'll be at Sudwerks tonight in a green shirt/jeans (shirt is sparkly) with an MS1 if you want to join us...

Lobster - Yes! I've checked out the wilderness med site- went to a conference last year in Big Sky that was AWESOME. We can backpack/ski whatever for sure (and study while we're travelling or camping?). I have many many friends/backcountry skier type folk in Tahoe we can connect with. Just bought tele skis and I LOVE THEM.

If I get in, I promise to coordinate a rafting trip- South Fork (fun/easy) for the entire class (and whomever wants to go). I even have a friend who has 10 acres in Lotus who could accomadate about 30 of us in one big camping spot if we wanted... How fun would that be?

You are awesome- I hope we both get in! I interviewed in early Feb and still havent heard anything.

so is the HOLD list not even something official? ....since no one brought it up on interview day?
this process really needs to be revamped imho

Got an interivew invite!!! I emailed Terri back for possible dates (all in mid April) and let's hope this one goes well.. UCD is my #1 choice; it's my alma mater and I live in Sac... but have been accepted back east.

I'll keep you guys posted!

I am so confused.

I interviewed back in November. I got put on hold in early January-ish, but when I called Terri to ask what 'hold' meant in relation to my chances of being accepted/rejected/waitlisted, she said it isn't such a fantastic place to be because you can technically still be rejected, and she made it seem like the fraction of people who were going to be accepted from the hold pile was practically nil.

Today (a million months later), I called the Office of Admissions and was told that to be in the 'hold' group gave you a 50/50 shot at being accepted from that category. So now I'm really 😕 because I was so disappointed to hear that I was put on hold in January, only to be told now that I might have a chance? I need a miracle. 🙁

Only acceptances are offered by phone (in fact, some people don't even get a call and find out through email...) The hold list is through emails. I would definitely try to get someone to check your messages and emails for you during that time. Have fun at Sudwerks. I'm back in the Bay Area already. Who do u know in the 1st year class? Just curious.

Firebird, congrats! I've been following your post periodically for a while because you had the association with UCD ugrad. Hope you get into your top choice! Go Ags!

Thanks! =) Ok so I have a question... I am accepted to a school in the midwest. I am on the waitlist for several other schools. Say I interview at UC Davis at the end of April, and do not hear back from UCD before May 15. What happens? I can only hold one acceptance, correct? Do I have to commit to the midwest school? What if later I am accepted at UCD, and want to withdraw my other acceptance? How does this work? I guess I just have never understood this...

Congrats on your interview firebird! They were SO cool. Enjoy your day there. 🙂

Here's my understanding of what happens: you have one acceptance. You cant hold more than one acceptance past May 15, but you can have more than one spot on a waitlist. If you get off the waitlist at a school you like more- like UCD sends you the "we are very pleased to inform you" email, you send in an email or letter to the other midwestern school that says "I wish to withdraw my acceptance from X midwestern school. Thank you very much. Signed, firebirdguy" while taking the acceptance from UCD. That's all. Then you withdraw from other waitlists. Does that make sense?

The only issue with this whole thing is that you cannot accept a spot off of the waitlist if the school you have been accepted to and to which you will go if you don't get off the waitlist is already started. So if your midwestern SOM starts classes on July 15th and your dream waitlist school starts on August 15th and notifies you in mid July, you can't go there. It is over once you start your first day of classes. Is that right? That is how I look at it.

hmmm, not sure about the rules for this, but i know a med student that had moved to new mexico, got an apartment, attended orientation, and was beginning classes in early august or so i believe, and soon after was called by UCSD and given an acceptance (they start much later compared to others), he packed his **** up, withdrew from the school, and is now attending UCSD SOM, this was a few years ago, not sure if there are now rules against this sort of thing, but thats my little anecdote

So it sounds like you cannot get rejected prior to May 15. Are they good at accepting people on hold on May 15? I would assume they may not get to calling accepted applicants until at least one or two days later. Also, at what point do they accept 200 people total? There has got to be a deadline or else more than 93 pepople would accept but they only have 93 spots. I guess I'm really trying to understand what our chances are. They have accepted 115 people so far. Does that mean they can accept 85 more in the next few months? I would appreciate it if you could clarify. Thanks.

The 200 total is supposedly everyone accepted right up to the day classes start...meaning that 107 or so typically withdraw after being accepted at some point during the entire application process (and it sounds like most of those withdrawels and new acceptances will happen in the coming 2 months if not sooner given the May 15th single acceptance deadline). I am going under the assumption that about 85 more people will be accepted between the day they were at 115 and the start of classes in order to fill those 93 seats...if this is a typical year. I'm hopeful!!!

Best of luck! 👍 :luck:

i just wanted to point out, and i believe someone mentioned it before on here, that ucd starts this year on July 31st, as opposed to in september like previous years...
at the interview, they said that as a result, there'll be less movement on the waitlist...
any thoughts?

has anyone that interviewed in mid january not heard back yet? i'm kinda wondering what's going on... i called terri like 2 weeks ago and she said a decision would be out soon.... it's going to be week 13 next week.....

I remember to hear that the class starts on July 31 on my interview day. But I don't see any clear corelation with less movement on the waitlist. It might be true since some students might end up deciding to go to UCD before they hear any last minute acceptance from some other schools that starts about a couple of weeks later. But I think these number would be probably small. Well, maybe I'm just trying to interpret the info for my convinience..

I hear you Gossmer, I interviewed back in early Feb and STILL have not heard anything! A fellow interviewee from my group called three weeks ago and she was told that our group would hear back in two weeks!.......Oh well. My guess is that we are all waiting for May 15th to come around!

It does seem like they take a while to respond sometimes, but I also don't think that it's a bad sign. I'm sorry for the waiting though. I know it's frustrating. Too bad some people on this board feel the need to be dinguses about it...

People can still get rejected prior to May 15th. I knew a few on this board that did get rejected post-interview without putting on hold. But it just SEEMS that there are not a lot.

And Bruin, it just makes sense that the earlier they start, the less the waitlist movement. Starting in September allowed more people to withdraw, change their minds, etc. It also meant that people were defecting to different schools throughout this time period. So starting earlier would mean less movement because of less time for people to defect.

Firebird, once your school starts, you cannot stay on the waitlist anymore. The first day of orientation is considered the start. This is true for all schools, not just Davis. If it is a DO school, then you can still stay on the waitlist. Good luck!

I can only speak for myself...Interviewed 3/21, got the hold email after a month or so. Last year May 15 fell on a weekend, and I got a phone call from Terri on May 13 (the friday PM before), presumably after someone withdrew, and they just went down the list. So they might get to calling people pretty quickly. The snail mail comes later.

One bad thing about getting off the waitlist after May 15 is you will not get your deposit back from the one school at which you are holding an acceptance. But hey, it's worth it if you got in at a place you really wanted to go to, right?

For those on hold, I know it's producing a lot of anxiety, but hang in there! A good percentage of our class got in off the waitlist (and at least one guy interviewed on the last possible interview day; 5 people with whom I interviewed with got in as well)

Thanks Nairay and Uegis.
It's good to hear positive info, keeps the hope alive.

Keeping fingers crossed...

Hi all. A quick question for Niki and the others who interviewed late(r) with me, say, after 3/1 -- have you recieved an e-mail or other indication that you were placed on "hold" or "waitlist" or whatever? Or is the lack of rejection the only notice we get?

By the way, message for Niki: Ronda visited your place of employment on Good Friday, where she was able to confirm that yes, I am potent and yes, she is with child. It's nice to know all these years of practicing paid off.

Thanks Uegis and nairay. So it sounds like nairay got the acceptance phone call from Terri and not Ed. So I'm assuming both of them make calls to accepted applicants. I'm being meticulous but I really want to know this: did their phone numbers appeared on caller ID or shown as private number? I'm still checking my cell every 5 seconds...

Like I said before, I think we have a better chance of matriculating than those already accepted. Stop worrying! [takes another antacid and continues to nibble on fingernails]

I got a call from Terri in mid-July. Their number did appear on my phone, which I had saved. Good luck!

bump.
Nope, haven't heard a thing. I'm just anxious and SDN is an outlet for my anxiety- like semi-anonymous group therapy.
Anyone heard anything lately? Any news? I'm NOT calling the admissions office to find out.
I'm just trying to decide on my summer. The Tuolumne isn't running for us until the end of June, and I *could* move up here to Truckee again, work in a med clinic and do a class or two and cycle and hang out with Tahoe man and ski at Squaw until July 4th....
Who's with me? Let's have a UC Davis limbo cyclocross team! Yes! Rafting on weekends only... 😀
Sorry I'm getting punchy. I went tele skiing all day and my quads hate me and I need to eat.
And the waiting is wearing on me. Wearing, wearing, wearing.

If any Davis folk want to do something cool this weekend, there's a river festival on the South Fork American. I'm racing/coaching a women's team- and there's bands and beer and all sorts of fun up in Coloma. Come on up ye local people!

Funny you should ask -- just Wednesday I saw Ed schlepping a group of interviewees up to the 14th floor to see THE FUTURE NEW AND IMPROVED MEDICAL SCHOOL. Now, far be it from me to cast aspersions on such a fine institution where I really really really want to go, but who in God's name is still interviewing on April 19?

Are we not good enough for them? SOB!

Thanks for the invite, but this weekend is the asparagus festival in Stockton. Stinky pee for me and thee! Wheeeeeee!

I interviewed with Davis all the way back in January, and I haven't even heard a peep from them. No hold, acceptance, rejection... no anything! =( And after exploring around and seeing what other schools are like, Davis is my #1 choice too... what does this mmmeeeaaannn???

The last day of interviews was supposedly yesterday! Maybe we'll start to hear things! 👍
