UCSF interview??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well, they say "Dictionaries or other writing aids are not allowed."

So I'm not sure.. haha.

But they also say "It is unlikely that you will be able to prepare for this in advance as the topics of the questions are not academic in nature, nor do they test your knowledge in specific subjects."

Blargh, I'm in my hotel and seemed to have forgotten my Invitation Letter at home. I am in the morning group for tomorrow (8:30 AM on 2/7) -- what building do we go to when we arrive on campus?

Thanks in advance! 😍

Their website says: "Go to Parnassus Avenue and locate either Millberry Union or the Medical Sciences Building as directed in your invitation letter." You've got a 50/50 chance at being right the first time. But they're right across the street from each other anyway, good luck.

xo sotypical, my letter says the location is Nobel Wall, Lobby, Medical Sciences Building at 513 Parnassus Ave.

Hope that helps and good luck to you!

I'm not sure if this has already been asked, but how many people are interviewed per interview day? per interview session (I know there are two sessions per day)?

About 25-28 per session

I got my car stuck in the UCSF parking garage, I literally could not get out of the parking space because I had barely any clearance in the back and a large column pole to my left. I can't believe how small the clearance between spaces is! Thankfully, there was this guy by his car who helped me get it out and on my way back to LA, I got a speeding ticket (claiming me at 97 mph in a 70 mph) so UCSF BETTER accept me for all this trouble!

Oh my! I'm sorry, that stinks. Did you interview on Saturday?? At least we got blessed with the most beautiful day in San Francisco, when it was supposed to rain!! My prayers were definitely answered. 😀

Yep, I was there on Sat. and I was so happy it was such a great day and didn't rain! I'm just bummed the day ended so badly for me, oh well...maybe some good karma will come my way. 😀

anyone interview today? how did it go for you? i had the first session today, and it went pretty smoothly. the atmosphere was very welcoming and comfortable.

Dislike: the program starts 30 minutes after the time we are suppose to check in. so i just sat around (i came early and explored the place). also,
i didn't realize how hungry i would get. 🙁
The room we had to write our essay in was so congested. Luckily the essay questions weren't too bad. There were no windows and everyone had to share a table. It was weird because the guy next to me was writing so hard i could feel the table shaking

Likes: interviewers were really friendly. IT DIDN'T RAIN TODAY!

Most interesting part of the day: there was an old lady who was lost and was trying to find her way around the hospital. i think everyone wanted to help her but no one could understand what she was saying.
there was a really cute guy (japanese/chinese?- tall and cleanly shaved) 😍 from the second session who started speaking to her in a different language. He directed her to where she needed to go. When he came back, i asked him what language he was speaking and he said "swahili". he quickly mentioned that he travelled to africa, before he ran back to his group because they were going to their welcome session. it goes to show what types of people ucsf is looking for, and i forgot to get his name!! :smack:

hey! I was in yesterdays session 1 to. It all went well and everyone was really nice. We will see April 1st....but Lord Jesus please let me get in!

Good luck everyone! It was nice meeting some of you in the chat rooms at UCSF today!

:luck:

hope everyone did well yesterday. the interviewers really varied on their methods and questions. i.e. some had a ton (~8) of situational ?'s while i had about 3.

Isn't that great! Just goes to show that they really do look at each person individually and that it's not a cookie-cutter process. I was impressed! 👍

now it's the waiting process for us. goodluck to everyone from thursday!

is it true that ucsf accepts some people prior to their last interview date? i know they mentioned that we should be notified of the decision by april 1st. i hope i don't get an april fools day joke.

Well, everyone will be notified by April 1. However, they will probably sent out throughout March. I know that UCSD has defined a personal deadline by the first week of March to make a decision with UCSF. (Or at least that's how I remembered it.) I wouldn't stress it so much.

I feel as if Joel tried to stress that they don't admit on a rolling basis and so they would only look over applications when all the interviews were done. But then again, that would be a lot of applications to look over, so maybe they look over interviews but don't decide officially until interview are all finished.

And since UCSD interviews started earlier (not sure if they ended earlier?) than UCSF's, they do have an earlier "you'll-know-by-this-date" date. So I don't know if UCSF and UCSD talk over decisions, they've just agreed upon a date that we applicants have to let them know what our decision is.

That's true; there isn't a rolling admission. However, not everyone was notified on the same day for their interview (so we can expect staggered mailing). However, UCSD did mention a date where they wanted decisions to be made and only UCSF has agreed to this deadline. (As far as I can remember. Someone from the UCSD interview can confirm this.) There was a goal for the UCs to coordinate decisions by the end of the first week of March. I don't know about applicants who did not receive both interviews. They do a lot of communication with one another as the interviews were coordinated as well. I met a few UCSD candidates at UCSF. The idea is that students would have all their decisions and accept ONE offer. Apparently, students holding positions at multiple schools is a problem for them.

Having said that, UCSD expressed this format. Rank your schools in your mind as if you were accepted to all of them. When you get your offer, accept that school you wish to attend. Do NOT take all offers.

I went to UCSD for an interview. They say we would know about late February/early March and UCSF said we would know by April 1.

I am not sure, but I hope that the two schools don't meet or even talk about whether to accept a student because I don't think that's fair. I can't imagine them saying something like, "Yeah, blah-blah was a good interviewee but they seem like more of a fit for your school so you can accept them and we will deny them." I think they both agreed upon a certain date by which we give them a final decision so, like you said, no one would accept acceptances to both schools.

They don't really let it impact decisions. They will know the decisions, though, through PharmCAS (I think, so very late into the cycle). Also, there will be dual acceptances, but they expressed that it is our responsibility to pick ONE school. At least that's how my welcome session went.

quick question to those who listened during the financial aid session, or those who are current pharm students:

for the monthly living allowance they provide for students, is that loans (sub or unsubsidized) or is it grants? and is it based on a 9 month living allowance or a full year? thanks.

It won't be grants. It will probably a combination of the Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans. I believe pharmacy school qualifies for the HPSL loans (for health professionals), which is a low interest loan as well. I'm not actually sure if it covers MORE than the academic year. As far as my experience goes, I did not receive financial aid as an undergrad for my summers UNLESS I was enrolled, so my guess is 9-month.

Received a letter from UCSF. a thank you letter for attending the interview session.

When did you interview ? 😱

How did your interview go ?

I received this letter too (received it on Friday, Feb 13th). I interviewed on Feb 7th. It nearly gave me a heart attack b/c somehow I thought my interview was so bad they just rejected me right away.

 That would've been my reaction too. That was nice of them to send a thank you letter.

Thanks for the warning guys. I haven't checked my mail in a few days and I think I would've died right there at the mailbox if I saw a letter from UCSF! I've been getting so much damn bad news lately, I've developed a phobia to my mailbox.

same here. Like CafeMed said, I have definitely also developed a mail-phobia. I tear open letters from any schools quickly to get find out immediately what the outcome is (while my heart skips a beat).

Yep, frantically ripping through the envelope, hands shaking, heart pounding, only to read those dreaded words, "I regret..." then promptly trashing it and grabbing a gallon of ice cream. 😀

yeah that letter gave me a near heart attack! because it started out with "thank you for your interest"... and that usually doesn't go well. haha... let's keep hoping together! good luck SDNers!

Well the year I interviewed someone was accepted before I even interviewed. Lol, that gave me quite a bit of a shock. She was the only one I knew of though. . . there might have been others. I got my acceptance on March 1st, and I had the last interview date. Not sure what it meant, but I know many people who hadn't gotten a letter in March started to freak out. For what its worth I don't think they send out acceptances first, and rejections later. It's best not to freak out, but I guess that's easier said than done 😛

Were you there on the 12th ? I was soo looking forward to meeting you in person, you were kind and helpful to me throughout this entire application process and your cheering guidance has kept me motivated throughout the span of these two years.

I'm interviewing on 2/19. Anyone know if there will be a place at the interview site where I can store my belongings (luggage, backpack, etc) while I'm interviewing?

Check with your hotel first. They may store you bags while you interview. I don't know where they'd store it at ucsf. Maybe at the check-in desk.

Hey Cheb I wasn't there on the 12th. I'm actually going to be there on the 20th in the chat room discussion. Awww, I wanted to meet you too. . . In any case I'm glad I could help you. I'm rooting for you 😉

Anyone from the 2/12 interview receive thank you letters yet?

Just got a thank you letter from UCSF (dated Feb 18th). I interviewed on Feb 12th. I wonder if this is a new thing since I didn't get one last year?

Hey, remember me ? I told you we'd see each other on SDN.

The majority of your loans will come from unsub. loans. You get a few thousand for sub. loans (Around 8500? I don't have my financial aid letter in front of me) and if you are considered in the lower income range, you will receive grants. Hope this helps =)

Severely dissapointed by the interviewers.... they were so mean... but what can i do... its all over now all i gotta do is just wait :-(... this sucks too since this was my number one choice ahh :-(

It probably went better than you think. Just wait and see.

As long as you were confident and articulate, don't mind how the interviewers were. I'm pretty sure you did fine 👍

On the other hand, I was actually disappointed with the whole interview thing. I thought I wasn't able to show my true self and my passion for pharmacy. My nervousness dominated me and my mind went blank and I was stuttering like crazy and probably was blabbering nonsense to them. 🙁
Does UCSF place the rest of the applicants who weren't accepted from the interview pool on the waiting? Or do they straight out reject some people? I am so scared right now. 🙁🙁🙁

Atlantis...that's exactly how I felt but I have been told that it's common to feel that way, especially when you place so much hope on one school. Don't worry so much about it. What's meant to happen will happen. Moreover, I think most of the people that interviewed with UCSF are great and will succeed no matter where they end up. UCSF is just a terrific place to start 😛
