UF c/o 2014... It Begins!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
All I have is the Orlando Campus Schedule for days to be ON campus. I don't have the lecture schedule, I am assuming because it isn't really scheduled, we can watch them anytime after they are uploaded. I know that each site runs a little different so it depends on which campus you will be on. The 1PDs were really helpful to send me the schedule so I could get an idea of what to tell my mother-in-law since she watches my younger daughter.

It is the schedule for this year's 1PDs so ours will be different but it is an idea of what is to come.

How many days are they requiring you to be on campus and what are the times? We here in Jax have not received the schedules yet and I am just curious? DOes it say what classes we will be meeting for?

Class schedule is from 8:30 - 5 usually everyday. However, all lectures are recorded and posted on e-learning system within couple hours normally. At the first few weeks, you will see a lot of Gainsville students attend class. It will die down till no one show up on days of exams. You will only need to attend scheduled discussions, quizzes, presentations, etc.
I would like to congratulate on all future 1PDs. I have only 1 advice and I am sure that you will need it. Do not procrastinate watching lectures. They will pile up. Exams very week are the norm. With that said, enjoy your summer. You will all do great. GO GATORS!!!!

To the current pharmacy students at the distant campuses:

Does your campus hold discussions as well? and if so, is it with a T.A. or a faculty member?

I will be starting school this coming August...so I haven't experienced it yet, but I know that we do have group discussions...attendence is required. I don't think there would be any T.A.'s since typically a T.A. is a graduate student and the Orlando Campus consists of 2 buildings and only offers Pharmacy and Lawn/Shrub/Tree Maintenance type stuff.

There are Pharmacists/Professors on staff there who "teach."

8:30 - 5!!! Bye bye life

Just the opposite, at the Orlando campus, we were told (since we asked the current students at our interview) that we will typically be on campus for only one or two hours a day. So, some people spend more time driving to and from campus than actually being there.

If you are saying 8-5, then you must be including the lectures which nobodly...including Gville students attend...we watch at our convenience. (Of course, I guess a few Gville folks will attend, but the Orlando students ALL said they watch the lectures at either 1.5 times speed or 2 times speed...and mostly 2 times speed...so you watch the lecture in half the time that it would take to see it live!)

Bye, bye life due to studying. At the Orlando Open House, someone said they started working 20 hours per week and within a few months quit working completely. Someone else said that before starting Pharm school, she had planned to study Monday thru Friday, and enjoy her weekends...but once school started, there was WAY too much work for that. So, yes, bye, bye life...but you must be self motivated and structure your lack of life yourself. If you just go to required things, then you will have lots of free time... and all of your time will be free time after you drop out.

I don't have our fall schedule, I have the previous schedules for c/o 2013, it is for Orlando, so I don't know how Jax does it, probably similar but not exact (meaning we have the same discussion groups, but meeting different days/times). If you know any of the 1PD for Jax, I would ask them for the schedule they had this year. It isn't the same, but it gave me some idea of the future.

For those that have gotten accepted, how long did it take until you got an email from Certiphi Screening from the time of Penny receiving your decision form??

Hey Pharmgrrl, on that schedule you have for Orlando c/o 2013--how many days a week have the 1PD's been meeting on campus, and has it been later in the day or earlier? I'm just concerned with an estimate too--not expecting you to be right on target--if I get accepted I may be doing some creative scheduling myself.

It is all over the board, there really is not a pattern to it, which makes it difficult. There are some people that will have to be there as early as 8am (discussion group A) and other days it is all late in the day. I was trying to find a pattern and quickly realized there isn't one.

LOL, that doesn't help you and your mother-in-law much. Oh well, the family knows its important, obviously, it will all work out. Thanks for that bit of info...its actually very useful.

Are you going to the Orlando campus? If so pm me and I will send what I have to you. If you are going to another campus, I doubt it will help much. I know the gainsville one is posted on the website.

As for my mother-in-law, she is a retired teacher, she had briefly debated doing sub work next fall, but we shall see.

I know the schedule :
1pdg.pdf
http://www.cop.ufl.edu/studaff/f10/1pdg.pdf
looks tough. But let me clarify some things for you.

ALL UF COP students, St. Pete, Apopka, and Jville included, will receive the SAME large lectures as Gville. They will be recorded and you will watch them once they get posted up online. As far as I remember, this includes classes like: Fund Med Chem/Dosage Forms, PBD, and Biochem. Intro to pharmaceutics changes so much, so I'm not sure. Again, any of this may be different than when I took it 2+ yrs ago, but for the most part, not really. The professors who taught it then are still at the college next year.
If you are a Gville student, you have the luxury of either watching the classes live (where you will not fall asleep, go play on facebook, and have the opportunity to ask profs questions) OR you can also watch it online like the other students. I have attended every lecture live unless it was pre-recorded. I recommend this. There will only be 4 students in class at times. But I actually liked that.

Once a week in PBD, you will have a quiz and you have to come in for that.

Practicum does NOT span the whole week, it is only once a week and you will know what day you have once the lists are handed out by your professor or you sign up for a section.

Practicum OFF campus means just that. It is not from 3-4:55, nor does it span the whole week. You will have to 2 or 3 off campus projects the entire semester, like BP screenings at Publix, for example, and that's what that covers.

The orange "Student Organization" period is the one time that all classes of students have a free period, so all organizations meet then (such as Academy of Student Pharmacists, Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International, Florida Systems Health Pharmacists, etc...). It is not mandatory for you to be in an organization, so you do not have to be on campus then.

So when you look at it, if you want to stay home and watch lectures, your schedule would be like this: (assuming your quiz for PBD is on Monday, you have to attend Intro to pharmaceutics, and your practicum is on Tuesday)
M: Pd 3, 5
T: Pd 7,8
W: Pd 5
Th: Either Pd 2,3 OR Pd 4,5
F: Pd 5

Honestly though, I doubt Intro to Pharmaceutics attendance is mandatory, so if there is no Pd 5, then you don't have to go to class W and F.

So you see, it is not 8-5. I only stayed on campus for classes from 8-5 on a regular basis only once in my past 3 years there. Usually it's from 830-1, and even then, you are tired after that.

Well, I hope that cleared some questions up about your scheduling. Or maybe confused you more... lol. It'll make sense after week 1 and 2.

Thank you for clarifying the schedule. When I looked at it, I was thinking that I was going to lose a lot of weight because it didn't look like there would be time for a lunch break. I am really looking forward to this fall, and meeting everyone in Gainesville.

Wow so I've literally spent the entire day here at work catching up on this thread lol. Congrats to everyone 🙂

I was accepted to Jax and I'm pretty excited. Don't worry I'll join the facebook group soon lol. Here's ALOT of interesting conversation starters and I want all of your opinions:

1. I'm highly considering living in Gainesville even though I'll be attending Jax. My friend showed me around Jacksonville after my interview and I got super bored (its super old and stuffy) :/ After some hard studying I think its important to have some people MY AGE to grab drinks with, workout with, etc. I took the drive to Gainesville and it wasnt bad at all. I think I'm comfortable with that.

2. I'm really concerned about being able to afford UF. I don't get any support from my parents, and according to Mr. Mafehee (spelling?) we can only borrow $28 - $29K/yr...and private loans arent an option anymore.

Tuition alone is 16.1K, then plus new laptop, iphone, moving expenses, first/last/deposit on an apt, things are looking really tight. It doesnt help that I have some credit card debt from a few years back. I really think I'm going to need to work to cover some living expenses, which sucks. :/

3. I'm kind of excited about the prospect about attending Jax but living in Gainesville. According to some 1PDs that transferred from Gainesville to Jax, I will only have to go to Jacksonville twice a week the first year, and I dont have to worry about annoying meetings in the middle of the day like in Gainesville, because at Jax they cluster all the meetings together as much as possible to keep you from having to drive to school everyday. This means more flexibility for the stuff I want to do, like work...lol.

4. Just out of curiousity, I asked Marcy if interest in the MBA program was grounds for petition to be transferred to the main campus, and she got really pissed at me lol. She was like "I don't know why students keep asking me that, maybe there is some FORUM where you are reading that" and I just LOLed and politely thanked her for clarifying.

4. I really want to join the ticket lottery! Maybe I'll get luckkyyy

5. I'm looking for an affordable roommate situation in Gainesville. I'm fun, smart, and clean so keep me in mind. 😉

6. My numbers are all effed up, hopefully counting isnt something I have to worry much about as a pharmacist...😀

Lol, I haven't been accepted yet...but I have a feeling they'll be looking at new applications this coming week. My friend actually received an email from Dr. McKenzie, and I got an email from Penny asking if I needed to take any summer classes. So, we shall see!:xf:

Has anyone been able to get their hands on any "first semester" syllabus? I was just wanting to see what my first semester was going to be like, ex. pace & material.?? Thanks😱:scared:😱:scared:😱😴😴

Im currently working on the background check. It says "You MUST enter a Professional License. Do NOT click the "I have never held a Professional License" checkbox". Do I have to wait till I get my Pharmacy Internship License before I finish the background check or should I just continue, saying I do not have a license?

That is really odd. I haven't done mine yet. Are you going to email Penny about it? I don't think she wants to get the same email from all of us, but we will all probably have the same question.

I emailed someone about that when I was doing it...

"The note you mentioned is out there just as a warning to students who hold professional licenses to disclose that information. If you do not hold one it should allow to continue with the process. Please check the box that says you have never held one and hit next."

So it's ok to just check the box that says you've never had one.

Sounds like you will get an interview soon! What was your #1 campus choice? I'm curious as to whether you will be a classmate in Orlando.

Why did Dr. McKenzie e-mail your friend?

Was Penny asking if you needed any pre-req's over the summer, or any summer classes for your Master's? If Master's classes, I wonder why they would care?

Anyway, good luck!

I hate to come across as being strongly opinionated, but I really think they either need to change that wording or fire someone.

The way it is makes no sense, and I doubt they have time to take phone calls from everyone who doesn't have a professional license.

I hate things that make no sense...but I guess thus goes the saying, "You can't fight City Hall." Unfortunately, I guess that nonsense statement makes sense to some decision maker.

Hey! Orlando is my first campus choice (Jax second), but I'm really not sure what's 'left', so beggers may not be choosers. Penny was asking me about prereqs I'm sure, and as far as my friend, it was to clarify her prereqs as well. Lol, we both are tired of checking email 10 times a day! 😏 It sounds like the Orlando campus is going to be a hoot...we're hopeful!

As far as I understand there are still spots with us at Orlando, but I don't know how they place people in campuses.

And just wait till after the interview, you go from checking your email 10 times a day, to checking it about every five minutes during business hours.. haha! My husband thought I lost my marbles!

Did your Physics exam go well? I was thinking of you. My exams are over and I graduate Friday!! I am looking forward to my first free summer in years (if I don't take Chinese III that is!). My summer checklist is quickly being completed. Good luck with yours.

I am showing my age here, but all of us PharmD students should see the movie, "The Paper Chase" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070509/

It is about first year Harvard Law School students which is different than PharmD students...but both will be a challange, so there are many similarities. The movie is from 1973 and they actually made a PBS TV show about it. My favorite scene is during finals week when they leave the dorm since there are too many distractions and they go to a hotel and as they enter their room they point to the TV and tell the bellhop, "Get that damn thing out of here!" They don't leave their hotel room, don't shave, I don't think they even shower, just study, study, study...

Anyway, hopefully, the Orlando campus will be a hoot (it sure will if there is anything I have to say about it.) So, obviously, our required movie will be Animal House (which really isn't applicable since there is no college frat atmosphere at Orlando, as there is at Gville...but we will just have to make our own!) I guess, if we want to graduate, we should focus more on Back to School with Rodney Dangerfield rather than Animal House. Nothing like paying Kurt Vonegut to write a book report for you on a book which he wrote.

But seriously, see "The Paper Chase" if you can get it, perhaps Netflix? It shows how they balance school, dating, even excersize (they chose swimming.) After all, you can't graduate if you have no life at all other than studying.

Regarding being asked if you need to take classes over the summmer to finish your prereq's, I would have thought they would be able to figure that out...I guess they don't know what classes you are taking this semester until they get your grades? You don't tell them what you are taking for the spring of 2010 on the application? I find that strange. I finished all my prereq's during last summer, so I wouldn't know. I should have applied last year, but I took Orgo I spring 2009 and I figured, they would really want an Orgo grade...plus I took Orgo II over the summer...plus I hadn't studied for the PCAT yet.

At my age, 43, what is another year (or 10) so I made my application super stong and waited the extra year.

I'll be at the Orlando campus. I interviewed in March. I've been reading these posts for a while. No celebrating just yet for me though, I have one more class to take this summer. When I filled out my PharmCAS application there was a section for what classes I was currently taking and what classes I would be taking and when (included in that long transcript section that we had to fill out for every class we have ever taken and where). Anyway, I am also trying to get an idea of how often and how late we will be on campus. Does anyone know the latest we might have to be on campus?

Crazy as this sounds, all tests are at 7:00 pm at all campuses. So fairly late. We are not allowed to be on the Orlando campus after 9 pm for our safety...but I don't know if this is enforced or not.

I think only crazy people should be allowed at the Orlando campus so we can Rock It Out!!!:laugh::laugh:

Thanks for thinking of me! My exam went exceptionally well. When I got the exam I knew how to do every problem (that alone is a blessing). I definitely don't have Chinese III in my future, especially since I haven't taken Chinese I or II.😀 I have a free summer as well, minus the UF paperwork, the unfortunate thing about that is my family finds things for me to do with my spare time so I don't get bored :eyebrow:....I would rather be in class.

I have the schedule for the 2009-2010 schedule. It isn't our schedule for the fall but it is an example of when we would be on campus. PM me if you want it. :highfive: So excited to find another Orlando classmate!!! It should be an interesting 4 years...

Maybe we should arrange a movie night on campus after classes start. I know they have done it before.:corny:

As for Orlando being a hoot...it has to be. If we don't have fun with this we will all surely go crazy!!!! Or end up with high blood pressure and panic attacks... The stress can get the better of you if you let it...we just can't let that happen!!!

Well, if you need any help with the high blood pressure, panic attacks, or stress...just let me know. I expect to have inside access to a pharmacy during the program...I should be able to get you anything you need!!!

(And with that, my pharmacy career ended before it even began🙁 Oh well, it was nice knowing you guys, good luck to all of you. Guess I will look into another career, perhaps, driving a beer delivery truck.)

Hi, I received an invitation for an interview at the St Petersburg campus. Could anyone tell me if the interview is difficult? I am nervous.
Thank you for your help!

Haha, I know...yes, I outlined everything in Pharmcas to finish in the spring. Maybe they were curious to see if I was going to retake anything (like my F's, for example--good luck with that, since I won't be going ANYWHERE near FAU any time soon--well, except maybe with a paint can, lol, just kidding).

If I didn't think you'd be such a great classmate I'd encourage you to get that beer-delivery truck job--that's one more open spot!:claps:Haha, just kiddin!

That would be great! Although, I'm seriously starting to think it looks like wait-list for the near future, even in the event of an interview. That being said, I may need to start 'campaigning'.

Thanks for all your help everyone. That's why I like this forum so much!

Ya, we are pretty awesome around here!!!😎 I responded to your message from the other day but never heard back from you. I can't send attachments on here (or at least I don't know how to via private message), so if you send me your email address I will put you on the mail list for the CPR class and send you the schedule from this year.

Oh this is all too familiar... if you keep up, the first year curriculum isn't too bad until you get to finals week in spring semester. I slept roughly 12 hours in a 6 day span and some of my friends did less. You'll have 1-2 tests a week at 4:30 every week then 6 finals in 8 days with the last 4 being at 9 am. It totally throws off how you're used to preparing for an exam. I don't see the point to cramming everything in like that as none of us even know what we studied that week anymore lol. Don't worry about not having a life. There's plenty of time to go out and have fun and do other things. I've actually had more fun since starting pharm school than I did in undergrad.

Did you get any F's on pre-req's? If you did, surely you already retook them, otherwise, I don't think you are eligible for UF.

I think there are plenty of spots left. After my interview, I had posted how many people were accepted at Orlando form the first 2 interviews. Add some people who interviewed at Gville in Dec or Jan and you still have plenty of space.

Generally, everyone gets their campus of choice except for Gville (although someone posted that they got their 3rd choice...which is incredibly bizarre.)

If you don't get into Orlando, just petition for a change of campus and say that you can't imagine going to school without that wacko guy in Orlando. I am sure they will know whom you are talking about. (Ego, what ego?)

Hey guys! How long did it take for you guys to receive that email from Certiphi Screening for the background check?

Dude, cut it out. Procrastination is my middle name and I plan on getting it changed to my first name too (I just haven't gotten around to it yet, but I plan on it as I plan on doing so many other things!)

My success plan is to have 1 exam per week and thus cram once a week and thus succeed. If 2 exams a week, so much the better.

I am too old and too tired to pull all nighters, although, I can squeeze a few more out of me. Back in my day, I was the king of the all nighter...although, I have never gone 48 hours without sleep. I actually started all nighters back in high school. I remember freshman biology when I started all nighter training and I would conk out around 2 am.

Also, I hate to rain on your parade, but if what you say is true (and I am sure it is) then, finals are just a warm up. I am sure that preparing for the boards are the biggie. Do you have any idea how much people study for those?

I am thrilled that we have the weekly tests rather than just have several tests on a monthly basis. As any self respecting procrastinator can tell you, that would be deadly. Maybe I will petition to have the program changed to giving daily tests just to keep me on the ball!!!

I got my 4th choice. 😳

You must be the person I was talking about. I guess showing up at the interview with a rocket on your shoulder doesn't exactly instil feelings of, "Hey, I want this guy at my campus!"

On the supplemental applicaiton, did you give any reasons for your campus preferences, or did you say, "I just wrote the campus names on pieces of paper and then picked them out of a hat?"

Well obviously you had more fun in pharm school. The only reason any of us want to go to pharm school is for the easy access to all the cool drugs! It should be a blast. Plus, quit your job and sell drugs on the side for income.

(And with that, for the second time, my pharmacy career ended before it even began🙁 Oh well, it was nice knowing you guys, good luck to all of you. Guess I will look into another career, perhaps, driving a beer delivery truck.)

umm i read on this that someone checked their finaid status on their UFL? what do i do to log onto mine? I thought we can't log on until penny or someone sends us our account and stuff..? I am so confused lol

I got mine about a week or 2 later. I think that company is one of the major background check companies for pharmacy, so perhaps they are behind because so many schools are accepting student right now. I nearly missed the email because it didn't really stand out, it didn't obviously state what it was.

I have never been able to pull an all nighter, not to study at least. I have stayed up late, but the latest I have ever studied is like midnight. After that I don't absorb much... But I suppose things can change...I hope I don't have to do that to do well in these classes.
