UHS Class of 2007

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That's a great link to read. It shows how the school is motivated in improving itself...

Irisbeeker, just curious, what school are you a TA at? I went to school in the state of Michigan?

To anyone on this UHS 2007 forum, feel free too IM me and those who I've spoke to from the class of UHS2006 as well:
My AIM is D15athsu (I'm moving around August 2nd and bringing a tennis racquet if anyone wants to play between those few weeks before we all get busy with schoolwork)
Also, are all of you Certified in all forms of CPR?

Wolverine.. I am teaching at Oakland University in Rochester Hills.

what up class of 2007~

I made this post a while back but there have been a couple of new names show up since then so I will ask again. do any of you guys mountain bike? there are several great trails in the KC area to ride on and a couple of races each year. we also have a pretty large mountain biking club in the area called Earth Riders you can check out the web page at www.earthriders.org. I would love to hit the trails with some class mates.

oh yeah, my AIM screen name is brdDO2007 if anyone wants to chat. I have cable internet so I am almost always signed on so if you IM me and I don't respond it's probably because I am not at my computer.

also I have been living in KC the past three years so if any of you have any questions about the city I may be able to help.

Newfocus,
I forgot to ask when I was in KC, but what is the weather like during the 4 seasons...is it dry/humid? Does it rain a lot during the spring, what about the amount of snowfall in the winter?
Thanks.

Wo1verineDO~

The thing about the mid west is that we fully experience all 4 seasons. spring and fall are great, I would say we get average rainfall in the spring, but the summer can be really hot and the winter can be really cold (and we usually get alot of snow and ice). I grew up in the mid west so it is all normal to me but most people that move here from the coasts are not big fans of the weather, it just takes some getting used to. I hope that helped, I look forward to meeting you in the fall.

we are going to have to get all the SDN'ers together during orientation week!

Hey I gotta question for you guys, is there anyway to find out what the clinical sites for UHS are? I've tried looking on their website but I cant find it there. Any way thanks in advance for any help.

Finally, I found the forum again. I bookmarked the old link and thought the forum was down.
Anyway, thanks new focus for the info. I was wondering, what are the preferred banks to use in KC. I read and found only commerce and bank of america are the larger banks...do you recommend and particular bank in the area?
Thanks,
Anthony

I have used Bank of America for the last three years without any problems. I check my statements, transfer money, and pay all my bills online so it is very convenient. (plus you get a cool check card with you picture on it) Commerce bank is good and we also have several US Banks and UMB's which I assume are also good. Alyhough as far as ATM location around town I would go with either commerce or BOA. btw, are you doing the summer learning enhancement class?

Is there any way to get out of the monthly fee at BofA? As far as I know, the only way you get free checking from them is to have montly direct deposit.

Thanks,

Russell

FYI--I did the SLEP last year...I highly recommend it. It really broke the ice for me, and I made a lot of friends (they might say otherwise...😛 )
M.

What is this summer learning experience? I've never heard of it? Is it at UHS? or did they mail something out about it to other new students? I'm moving in on August 1st to CT, will that program have started by then?
Thanks,
Anthony

To my fellow future classmates,
If anyone wants any past UHS related forum links to questions asked about Starting school, what books to buy, and about the summer reading book, I've saved the links since the forums website keeps changing and they fell off the first couple of pages on this DO forum.
Thanks,
Anthony

you can either have a monthly direct deposit or maintain a minimum balance of $500. I think those are the only two ways. fortunatley I have a monthly direct deposit because there are plenty of times (today for instnace) when my balance is lower than 500 bones.

Anthony ~

they sent a letter out with information on the Summer Learning Enhancement Program and a sign up form about a month ago. maybe some 2006 or 2005 students on SDN can tell us more about it. I think the deadline to sign up is June 30th. They have a session that goes from aug 4th - aug 8th contanct Don Weaver at 816-283-2481 for more information.

That's weird, I never received a letter about that program, How much does it cost? If I'm in KCMO already, I should try and sign up for it? Does anyone know what the summer program offers?

You are invited to the SLEP if you have been out of school for awhile (like me) or if it is possible that you have never been seriously academically challenged or if your numbers are rather low (GPA, MCAT).

And regarding the low numbers thing, don't get upset if you were invited and this might be your situation. A friend in my class had some low numbers....and she is currently a straight A student in med school.

SLEP is a little intro to "how to learn". Don't panic if you were not invited, because, they go over a lot of the stuff with the rest of you during orientation week.

I remember how I felt last year at this time, and when I first moved to KC. Wow. I was so excited, as you all should be.

Relax, enjoy, (but GET READY!!!!😀 😀 😀 )
M.

I say any studying in the summer is like having a glass or two of water before they turn on the fire hose and tell you to open wide. I'll just wait and take my water from the hose.

I agree Daveyboy, my name's dave too by the way.
peace.😉

Hello Everyone,

First of all, I can't wait to meet all of you!! Second of all, I need some advice from those of you who are familiar with the KC area. Should I take I70 or I35 into KC or does it really matter? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to be moving into CT apartment 538 on August 1.

Have any of you heard anything back from Financial Aid?

Mindy

Hey Mindy and welcome to the forum. My names dave and I'll be living with my roomate Austin at CT room 514. See ya there.

Into KC from where?? what highway to take depends on where you are comming from.

I have not heard from financial aid yet

I look forward to meeting you in the fall!

Last year we did not hear from the F.A. office until late July or early Aug. So, if things have not changed since last year, you still have to wait about a month before you will hear anything. Hope that helps.

😛 Hey Guys! 😛

Summer is finally here and school starts in 6 weeks YIKES.

WELL- I was talking to a couple SDN'ers and I think we are having a Get-together at CT Lounge the week before the WhiteCoating or sometime around then. Let me know what days work and we can have some fun times...

Send me an IM at AOL.... xXAnksXx
Email...... [email protected]
Apt... CT 812 starting Aug 1

Take care and Welcome to the post Mindy and Vinti.

Ankur

Hey Everyone,
That Get together would be cool. Anyway, I called about that program before class...it filled up the week from 4-8th, but Don Weaver said it wasn't too significant, just for people to get back to studying for school. I also called admissions, they told me my money will be ready by the beginning of July and they already take care of the private loans as well...so we really don't need to worry about much. We'll get enough to pay the bill and tuition.

Anyway, hello Mindy, if you want to go to KC, use Yahoo Maps cause it gives better results than Mapquest, but it depends on the direction you come from.

If anyone wants to chat, feel free to IM me at D15athsu.

Ankur, what about the weekend before orientation? By then all the SDNers will have arrived in KCMO.

Thanks,
Anthony

Hey everyone,

I love the party idea. I'll be moving into CT Sat Aug 9th so we should def do something either sat or sun evening. What do you all think? Later.

Booo for me not being in CT 🙁 Maybe I could still join you guys??? I'll return the favor!! I have a pool and tennis courts... so maybe a bbq??? I'll buy the stuff but I don't know how to cook it on a grill.

Great to see that we are at least socializing, I'm freaking out about making new friends, as I will know NOONE .... 😱

Anyways... I've talked to some of you guys on AIM 🙂 But I have another screenname too, that I'm not being stalked on... long story.. lol

OnlyanIris, or Irisbeeker either or

It is 97 here today.... blah.... heat

Well.... I'm off to keep packing 🙂
Email me anytime: [email protected]

Woo Hoo!!! Party:clap:

Thanks for the info about financial aid, everyone. 🙂

Okey Dokey...I had a blonde moment with my interstate question...or at least that is my excuse  I'm coming from Albuquerque, NM, going to OK City and then up to Witchita... Should I go trough Topeka and take I70 or take south I35 into KC. The largest city I've ever driven in is Albuquerque, so I'm slightly clueless.😀

Thanks everyone🙂

Mindy

Oh yeah, mapquest told me to take I70, but Anthony, thanks for suggesting Yahoo maps🙂

Mindy

Clay,

If you are coming through Wichita, you should take I-35 as this takes you directy into Kansas City.

I think all the UHS SDNers should meet out for drinks on the 8th, that way we don't have to worry about who is at CT and who isn't. Mi Cocina is a really good place in the Plaza. Just a suggestion.

Hi everyone! I'm starting at UHS next year too. I hope that I'm not intruding by posting here...I just found out about this forum yesterday and was so thrilled to find a place where I can meet people before starting this Aug. Can you sense my trepidation?! :scared: Anyway I'm flying down sometime during the first week of Aug and am looking forward to meeting everyone!! (I'll be in Century Towers--6th floor)

Smiles,
Vinti 🙂

Ankur: Thank you so much for your amicability

If my wife and I are in town by then, we'll come.

Fabulous idea!!

Hey Irisbeeker,

If you don't know how to grill, I got a George Foreman grill, you just have to plug it in  It also drips all the fat off.

Newfocus, where is the plaza? Is that the place with the Holiday Inn?

Anthony

Anthony~

The Holiday Inn your thiking of is probably on Westport road, its the closest to the plaza and I believe the hotel says they are located in the westport/plaza area.

They plaza is my favorite part of KC, its my little home away from home. It is where you will find many many delicious restaurants like Cheescake Factory, Ruth Chris, California Pizza Kitchen, Baja 600 and one of my favorites, Tom Fooleries plus many more. It is also where you will find stores like Banana Republic, Gap, J crew, Abercrombie, Brooks Brothers, Sacks, and many others. But most importantly it is where you will find Barnes and Noble and one of many Starbucks locations. For the past three years these are the places where I have done the majority of my studying. Any given night during the regular school year 70% of the people in the Barnes and Noble cafe are eihter a UHS, UMKC or KU medical student studying like crazy. Also, at night, several of the restaurants on the plaza convert to bars and hot spots. these places are a little more classy then what you will find in the wesport area. I hope this helps for now. feel free to PM or IM me if you have any questions (AIM brdDO2007).

see you all soon!

Happy hour on the 8th sounds good to me as well. Mi Cocina sounds like a good place.

😀

jbear is it 5 minutes from school walking or driving?

Hi guys! I was just wondering, is anyone doing the summer program during the last week of July? I know that most of you are doing it during August....unfortunately for me that session was filled by the time I called. 🙁

When is the WC ceremony? Is it on the 14th, or 17th?? Thanks

The White Coat ceremony should be on the 14th of August.
For those of you newbies that don't know much about it, let me take a few minutes of your time to tell you about it.

UHS spends a lot of time and money on this event, so be sure to invite as many of your family members as you can!! It is well worth the time. I had a blast at mine last year and it was so impressive.

Basically there will be a few speakers. Then you will be sent up on stage about 15 at a time and be given your white coat.....either by a Doc of your choice or a random one selected for you. Then you will be assembled as you come off stage in the back on an over-crowded risor. When the last people are coated you will recite the osteopathic oath.

Afterwards there is a nice party at a local hotel. FREE FOOD AND ALCOHOL for everyone!!!! It is a great time. Afterwards, you can go to Westport for the night life. That is what I did last year; had a great time.

That is about it. Also, the school video tapes the event and everyone will receive their own personal copy if a family member was unable to attend!!

If you have any more questions about it or anything else, let me know!!

Chris

Hey Chris,

What did you do with your kids for the white coating ceremony? I will most likely need a babysitter. Any recommendations.

Russell

Acura~

I will be joining you in the july summer program along with a friend of mine who is also a future classmate (obviously since he is attending the program). anywayz we are both KC locals so we will have to show you around the city. I have talked to some of my friends who are 2nd and 3rd years and they said this program is very beneficial. see ya in a couple of weeks!

Prettymean, I PM'd you. John

Hey Newfocus! I'm definitely going to take you up on that offer to show me around town. I was only in KC for two days and didn't really get to go around anywhere! I was afraid that maybe I would get bored at CT until the 1st.

I guess I should really get around to packing everything! Are you almost done? Also, do you know how many people are in this program? Is it pretty small in size?

Keep smiling,
Vinti

P.S. Forgive the plethora of questions.

Mission before going to UHS: Finish Harry Potter! (Anyone else part of the Harry Potter cult?!)

Do they sell extra video tapes of the white coat ceremony in addition to the one they give you? I'm curious cause not all of my family will be able to attend it?
Thanks,
Anthony (D15athsu if you want to IM me)

Acura, Im a HUGE Harry Potter fan. I just finished the order this morning! I read about the first 700 pages in 2 days then I started to draw it out as long as I could because I didnt want it to end. I know im a big nerd but I love those books and now we will have to wait like 2-3 years before another one. damn it!!! anywayz, to answer your question(s) Im not exactly sure how many people are in this program I assume the august session may have more but this one may fill up also. Im not quite for sure what you mean by "are you almost done"? do you mean packing? I have lived in KC for the past three years so fortunately I have no packing to do. you can email me at [email protected] if you have any other questions
