UK and Ireland c/o 2017 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I applied to Edinburgh! I wouldn't say it is my top choice, but I'd rather go there than my IS. (this has more to do with my desire to leave Illinois than a dislike of the school.) I just realized that the email I received from Edinburgh required my response as to which program I would like to be considered for... I better get to emailing them my response. Oops!

I applied to RVC, Glasgow, and Dublin 🙂

I heard back from Dublin, just letting us know about the supplemental app and when it's due, but that's the only school I've heard anything from so far. So I'm nervous too! Although it makes me feel better that I'm not the only one who hasn't heard back from RVC at least.

Any idea when we'll find out about interviews? I'm already way too anxious.

No love for Edinburgh?? 🙁

For Glasgow, you'll probably hear late November, early December.

They only do them in 4 cities in the US, usually 2 out in CA, one along the east cost (usually NYC or Boston) and I think somewhere in Texas. I think they're all done in February.

I totally would have applied there if I could! I haven't written the GRE yet, because I'm from Canada and the schools I'm applying to here don't require it. I'll probably take it next year if I don't get in this year! And then I'll add Edinburgh to my list 🙂

Well, I hope you get in this year so that you don't have to take the GRE and so that you don't have to apply again. 🙂

Thanks! I do too. I'm avoiding the GRE for as long as I can. It doesn't sound like a lot of fun.

Haha SO glad Glasgow and Dublin didn't care about my GRE score....😀

I applied to Edinburgh and Glasgow for their 5 year programs 🙂

Congrats on the interviews guys!!!
Let me know if you have any questions about the interview process. I went through it twice, so I'm pretty familiar with it.

And Shortnsweet goes to Glasgow, so she's a great resource as well.

At your service for anything Glasgow related! 😍

I applied to those too! Havent heard back from RVC yet, but glasgow has sent out letters for interviews today!

shortnsweet, how did you find the interview process for Glasgow. I know I'll be a bag of nerves going in!

Oh gosh...most relaxed thing ever.

I flew over here instead of doing it in the US, mainly because I had a college friend already attending and I wanted to see the school. It was my first interview EVER, but they made me feel so at ease right away.

Took me a few seconds to understand the accent, but after that it was simply....Why Glasgow? Tell us about this experience you had? What do your parents think about you moving here? yada yada yada.

30 minutes later, I received the unconditional offer in my e-mail account 🙂

Just relax and be yourself. They want to see your personality off paper.

Just seconding this. Although, the first time I applied I thought it was a bit more intense than the second time. But that's mainly because I felt they really challenged me with some ethical questions related to my experiences and I didn't answer them as well as I could have. I ended up getting wait listed that time. And same with other interviews. I've thought I bombed several and they all turned out to be schools I got wait listed/accepted to, so try not to freak out too much if you didn't think it went well. You'd be surprised.

They'll do a little introduction powerpoint/video too to tell you more about the school and everything like that before you interview as well. Everyone is super friendly and don't hesitate to email Joyce with any questions. She's super nice and very understanding.

Wow!! I can't believe the process is so fast!! What do you do the moment you realize your dreams have come true!? so surreal.

It typically takes a little longer if you interview stateside. Although, someone last year was told during the interview and I got the impression I was accepted immediately after mine.

Normally, I think you have to wait one to two weeks to hear your status after the interview.

Hi I'm a new member of SDN and I'm excited to report that I got an interview with Glasgow today!!!!!!

Glad to see all of you new SDNers posting 🙂

Congrats! We are here to help however we can!

And what did I do when I found out? Well I really wanted to go to DisneyWorld, but I settled for going to the pub and drinking whiskey.

Does anyone know what the acceptance rates are for people that are interviewed? Also, How many people do they interview from the U.S.?

Hmm not off the top of my head. I would check VMSAR.

There are usually 30-40 N.Americans who matriculate into a class of 120-130 here at Glasgow.

Edinburgh and RVC have bigger class sizes.

I can answer any Dublin related questions 🙂

Congrats on your interviews guys!! And good luck!

:luck: M.A.

Glasgow people: did you guys ever get conformation that they got your application before you got an interview?

Thanks for the information on the Glasgow interviews! It's nice to know that it won't be completely terrifying since it's my first interview ever. I'll probably still have a nervous breakdown though.

No, I didn't. I was starting to worry a little that I hadn't heard from them actually.

I finally received an email from RVC that they received my application - Phew! It also said they are hoping to send out decisions by mid November :scared:

I got the same one! That's so soon! :xf:

And that is really how you should celebrate! 😀

anyhow, I am the resident UCDublin vet student and am floating around SDN all of the time... or ummm...at a pub.... but then my phone is with me

So if you have any questions about UCD or Ireland in general feel free to PM me.... 🙂

So, I am not pre-Vet. My friend attends the vet school in Edinburgh. My first reaction was why is she in Scotland when there are vet schools here? I am from Wisconsin, and if I had to choose, I'd go to University of Minnesota Twin Cities or University of Wisconsin Madison. So, I guess my main question is---why do Americans go to Edinburgh?? Is this school better than American schools? is it easier to get in? Is it the change of scenery? Just wondering! It sounds like a great place to go for 4 years!

Why don't you ask your friend why she's in Scotland? I'm not trying to be rude, I just think she's going to have the best answer for why she's there.

Depends on the person really. I applied to Glasgow because I studied abroad in the UK for my entire junior year and loved it there and wanted to go back. Also, depending on whether or not you have an IS school, it could be cheaper to go to the UK and do a 4 year program. Another huge perk to the accredited UK schools is that you can practice in the US, UK and Europe because you're accredited through additional organizations. I know some people who find the required EMS work appealing as well.

Some people say it's easier to get into the UK schools, but I don't think that is necessarily the case anymore if it was in the past.

We all have different reasons for being over here.

But there are four schools in the UK and Ireland that are accredited by the US licensing body, so we take the same exam and get an equivalent education and degree to US schools.

Keep in mind there are only 28 vet schools in the US, and each accepts only 80-130 students a year. Not as many options as the pre-meds.

Because I haven't spoken to her in the last 4 years. Feel a bit strange to ask her out of the blue why she is in Scotland. I don't want to make it sound like I am judging her at all cause I know nothing about the program. I wanted to know some reasons why people go there. Thanks for the answers. They helped me understand.

Got an interview for Glasgow! Phew, was really worried there for a day. 😀

Congrats! I know your pain - I applied to Glasgow but have not heard anything....it is not looking good. On the plus side though, I have my heart set more on RVC and Edinburgh so if by some miracle I get into one of those then it doesn't matter! :xf::shrug:

I just got an interview invitation from Glasgow today also! I too was also super worried that I hadn't heard anything from them until now. I applied to Edinburgh and RVC also. I can't believe we're starting to get replies back from schools already. Does anyone know how many interview invitations they send out?

Personally, I want to be a veterinarian AND I want to live abroad. Hoping to kill two birds with one stone.

I applied overseas basically for similar reasons. I lived abroad before for a year and liked how I was as a person, I developed an inner strength because I could not depend on my family or old friends and so I grew independent due to being very out of my comfort zone. I also love that it's a lot easier (less expensive) to travel different countries from the UK than the USA and when would rather the same amount of money to live in the UK than a different US state.

Let's not kill two birds with one stone... Let's heal their wounds and release them, kay?

Just kidding. I agree, vet school abroad would be wonderful! 😍

Same here! Also there's only two schools here that I can apply to, so I wanted to give myself more of a chance. Even if it means I'll have to pay around 3X more in tuition each year :S

Depending on if those two school in the US you are talking about are your IS, it doesn't cost 3x more in tuition to go abroad. Tuition is on par pretty much abroad when compared to out of state tuition, and many times is cheaper by thousands (although you might make that up in flight costs to/from USA during your enrollment)

She's Canadian based on the location. It is much cheaper for them there with the downside that in a lot of cases they are much more limited to the number of options of schools to which they can apply. Just looked at OVC and, as far as I can tell, tuition and expenses is less than $5,000 USD per semester. So, much cheaper.

Ahh gotca, I should pay attention to location more then. 😛

Yup it's true! the ones I'd be applying to are around $10 000 a year. So quite a big difference. But I only have the option of applying to two schools here with only 50 spots total available for my province. So pretty limited. Which is part of the reason why I'm applying abroad 🙂

I have a question for those of you who have been through the application process before with these schools. Do they base acceptances off of past performance? Or are they expecting us to resend up to date transcripts from our fall semester before they make decisions. Or how does it work?

Sorry this topic is a bit late in the discussion, but I'm going to answer it regardless. I'm applying to Scottish schools because my fiancé lives in Edinburgh and works at SRUC (Scottish Agricultural College). However, my decision is not only based purely on geography because I understand I might as well be on a different planet while I'm a vet student. 😛 I studied abroad at Edinburgh Uni and really enjoyed it. Also I've heard great things about Glasgow Uni from my fiancé's uncle who praises it (he's an alumni). Interestingly enough, my top schools are in three different countries.
