I wanted to start a thread for 2023 applicants applying to any of the UK vet schools in order to ask questions and get specific information. I'm applying to UCD, RVC, Glasgow and Edinburgh and would love to see where everyone else is applying along with getting more information about the schools!

I am starting at Glasgow in the fall, so just wanted to put my name out there in case anyone has questions about interviews and the first year later on

I actually just found out the other day that I can't apply this year... I'm really crushed but I know this will only give me time to strengthen my application. I wish everyone the best and hope to see all of you get into the school of your dreams as I continue to stalk this page

I'm trying to decide which of the UK schools to apply to. I know I want to apply to 1-2 of them, and am currently looking at Edinburgh, Dublin, and RVC London. Anyone have any reasons why they did or did not choose certain schools? I'm hoping to specialize in equine eventually, if that helps any.

For me, I'll definitely be applying to Edinburgh because I loved the city and the vet school campus when I visited. It's very much so the kind of city that has plenty to do so you won't get bored, while still having the quiet, residential feel. I'm also sure about RVC because it's highly ranked and is the only school in the world that allows you to practice in North America, Europe and NZ/Australia after graduating. The only school I am on the fence about is Dublin because I have heard that it is more large animal based than anything and I want to be a mixed practice vet. I also haven't been to Dublin yet, but will be going in 3 weeks while I'm visiting my family in the UK. If you have any questions about the city itself, please let me know and I can try to find out while I'm there! :)

I won’t be able to visit any of the three (I live in the States and have no time to sneak over for a visit, much as I’d like) so any information you have is fantastic! I’m actually looking to study Equine, I know you said Dublin is more large animal based but I’m not sure how many horses there are in Dublin or how many equines they see there.

I know horse racing is a decently big thing in Ireland and there’s even a track in Dublin. And then there’s people’s personal horses for pleasure riding and showing. So there def are horses in Dublin, but couldn’t tell you what the school sees or anything.

The UCD vet hospital sees a fair amount of horses, and there is plenty of equine covered in the course. Racing is a huge industry in Ireland, there are many stud farms and equine hospitals too for externships. I am not a horsey or large animal person, so maybe I am biased, but I think the course as a whole is more equine/large animal leaning than small animal. There's also a veterinary equestrian club you can do horse riding lessons with or polocrosse.

Hi, I have a question for everyone. I am applying for Dublin and am confused about the 4 and 5 year program. I have every pre-req. except cell biology does that mean I have to do the 5 year program, it is only one class.

I didn’t apply there, but it’s the same thing for every school. If you don’t have all the prereqs for the program, you’re not eligible. It’s a prerequisite, not a suggestion. You could always take the class and be eligible for the 4 year program.

Got an email from RVC saying they’re reviewing my application and should send out interview invites in about 4 weeks.

Has anyone received any emails from Edinburgh or Glasgow?

Anyone heard from RVC yet? This is week 4 since they sent the email saying they’d update everyone in 4 weeks:xf:

I haven’t heard anything since that last email either! I’m hoping they’ll send out something soon since interviews in the US are just a month away.

Congrats!! Let us know how it goes :)
Me too!! I’m gonna interview in January in California
I think i’m gonna do the one in Boston, it happens to be a weekend the clinic I work at is gonna be closed so I don’t have to request days off :)
I was going to do Boston but there’s a conflict with my work schedule so I’m holding out until South Carolina in February!

Has anyone heard of the UK schools having a stigma like the island schools do? I didn’t think the UK schools did but then I was talking to a veterinarian today and he eluded to the idea that they might.

Haven’t heard of this at all. Especially considering that, unlike the island schools, the U.K. has a huge permanent population that make up the vast majority of the student body.

The whole stigma concept is detrimental, anyways. These are all AVMA accredited schools and all students take the same test in the end. The journey is mostly the same: It’s about finding where you want to embark on it - UK, Island, or otherwise!

Yeah, I hadn’t heard of the UK school having a stigma before until the doctor's comment. Maybe it’s because some of the schools attach “BVMS” to your name rather than “DVM”. Another doctor told me not to go to schools that don’t attach “DVM” if I wanted to practice in the US afterwards.

lol apparently you shouldn’t go to penn then
I’ve been told most of your clients aren’t gonna even pay attention to the letters behind your name. I wouldn't worry about the BVMS vs DVM/VMD.

The only people that have said anything like that to me were family members who have no idea about vet med, and when I told them that RVC was one of the most accredited vet school in the world, they got on board. I was skeptical about leaving the country at first too, but I asked a specialist who hires interns at her hospital and she highly recommended RVC over other US options and many of her interns are from Edinburgh and Dublin too. I really don't think clients know the difference between DVM and BVetMed, which is was you get at RVC, so I chose not to worry about that personally.

Wohoo nice! That’s so strange I wonder what’s going on with the emails??
Who knows, they’re probably behind on sending them out so as people contact them they figured it’s a good time to send out an invite.

I think I should email them too... Anyone got interview invitation in LA?

It is MMI style and I found it to be pretty laid back. They have a group task so during that make sure you work well in the group and do the task in the time given (my group had extra time). Then in the stations just relax and take them each individually. The stations are little scenarios and tasks that are not designed to judge you on your resume or your factual knowledge. It is more about how you approach things, so just be yourself and have some fun with it!

Thank you so much, this eased my nerves! How did you prepare for the interview? I’ve heard about there being drug calculations in the past as well.

I think the math thing may be Edinburgh, but I do know it wasn't apart of my RVC interview. I prepared by going through some MMI style questions and that is about it. I don't think they have any information about you at all, so maybe read through your essay so you won't panic if they ask you about yourself. It sounds like they change up a few of the stations every year, but everyone in my group and who I know here now said it was the best interview experience they had overall. Just remember to breathe between stations and don't get rattled; they are really nice and they want you to succeed.

The RVC was actually one of my favorite interviews, despite not being able to see their facilities in person. Last year when they emailed us the invitation they gave a list of what traits they were looking for during the interviews.

I interviewed at a lot of places last year and honestly, in my opinion there’s not much you can do to prepare. Have a couple of stories in your back pocket about some of your experiences, but I’m 100% sure that all of the questions in your interviews will be ones you’ll be seeing for the first time. Just practice being comfortable talking in front of people you don’t know and answering a question well within a few minutes. But as far as content ... there’s not much you can do. Just relax and have fun!

For the RVC interview if you don't have a passport (or its expired) are you guys just bringing your ID?

I think you need a passport. At least apply for one and prove that you’re in the process of getting one. They want to see your passport to make sure you’ll be eligible for a visa if you get in.

Hello! Does anyone know if there is an interviewer at every station and how long each station is?

Hello! Does anyone know if there is an interviewer at every station and how long each station is?

Mine was 5 or 6 stations each with an interviewer. It’s a few minutes each with a break in between each to allow you to breathe. It was the most calm interview I had mostly because they don’t want it to be stressful.

Don’t stress it’ll go fine. Everyone who I’ve talked to said it was one of the best interviews they had. The best advice I had before my interview was to leave the last station at the break chair. The next interviewer has no idea what happened before so you have a clean slate.

What do those of you who have completed an interview with RVC recommend to bring along? (notebook? printed out experience? misc. documents?)

Does anyone know when we hear back from Dublin around?

I reached out via email a few weeks ago; they expected mid November to be reaching out to schedule interviews; I haven't heard back yet so I emailed them this evening.
Please do let me know if you hear from them :)
Best of luck ! ! !
