UMDNJ-GSBS MBS Fall 2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey everyone!

I've been secretly stalking this thread and just got my acceptance letter to Newark on Saturday. I figured I wanted to know who was getting in when I was waiting to hear so I thought I'd let you guys know. I received my "complete" letter on March 13th and my acceptance letter was dated March 26th (I currently live in Chicago but am technically an NJ resident). I will be attending the program, so I can't wait to meet everyone else who's going there! I had a 3.3 cum gpa, and 3.0 science gpa from Northwestern; 30P MCAT. Good luck to everyone else... I whole-heartedly feel your pain!!

Congrats nulacrosse!!
Guess I will see you at Newark campus

I have mailed my $100 deposit and also sent my official DAT scores via ADA over the weekend.

Albuterol, I think you are pretty much guaranteed a spot given that you are a NJ residence.. so don't worry!

I got into Newark too! Awesome!

I'm not an NJ-resident either Albuterol sorry to add to it, but I just wanted to let you know in case it helps when talking with UMDNJ

alright so i called both stratford and newark this morning. stratford said it has already been sent to the review board and i should hear back within two weeks. Newark said that they should hopefully be reviewing today and I will be hearing back within a week. It's crunch time now. Fingers crossed

congrats to all those who are receiving their acceptance letters and good luck to all those still waiting. =)

gl dude.

I still havent heard from NJMS about the MBS program, btw. will post when i hear something.

Good luck all those waiting!

i'm mailing in my deposit now. For anyone interested, its a $100 deposit and its refundable up till June. So, if you get waitlisted - expect to hear in June when some people will chose to get elsewhere.

I havent decided where I am going but they want me decision by April 9th, so I'll send in the deposit and wait-and-see

I am getting confused...

Why is this thread under Postbaccalaureate Programs?

It seems like everyone in here is apply to the UMDNJ 1 year Biomedical Science MS degree if I am not mistaken. I thought Postbaccalaureate Program is for those students that have BA but lack premed courses. I know Rutgers University (Central) has Postbaccalaureate Program where if you do your premed at Rutgers and is above 3.5 and MCAT like 30ish (?), you are guarantee an interview with UMDNJ's medical school (NJMS, RJWMS). That’s sweet but it’s through Rutgers University.

If you guys already have a BA/BS in sciences, wouldn’t it be better to apply to somewhere else like Loyola where if I am not mistaken, its 1 year MS degree and if GPA higher than “x” and MCAT higher than “x”, you are automatically in for their medical school. Drexel have something similar too.

Its been a while since I was once interested in Postbaccalaurate Premedical Programs and Biomedical Science in MS (1-year).

Where else should we post it if we didn't post it here? In these forums the term postbac just means a program after bachelor's--degree granting or not.

Yes, the program at Rutgers is for those who don't have med school prereqs, but for all the other ppl with prereqs, they have their own reasons as to why they want to apply to UMDNJ's master's program. Perhaps they want to get into an in-state school (bc UMDNJ looks favorably upon its grad students), save money, raise GPA to apply to other schools not necessarily UMDNJ, or some of us just have a lag year and dont wanna work...etc!

jxc

Hey Jxc, congraduation to your acceptance to Rutgers/UMDNJ. Is it a MS program you got into?

Thanks, I applied for the Cell and Developmental Bio MS program. http://lifesci.rutgers.edu/~cdb/ I'm the only master's student so far bc most are getting PhD's and its really competitive. As of right now I'm pretty sure I'm gonna do that program instead of the MBS, but still deciding.

He simply said it is an "excellent" program and that alumni that do end up in NJMS do very well. As with every candidate, they look at your overall application. Also that a weak undergrad GPA will always be a factor in admissions, however.

Pretty much what I expected to hear but I liked that he described the program as "excellent." Dr. Heinrich is known for being very honest and not one for hyperbole so I will interpret that description as very good sign.

I also contacted Dr. Garrett about enrollment into MGM and he said that apps will be reviewed "later in the semester" which I interpret as sometime in May.

Hey guys, hope all is well, just thought I'd drop in and let you know about the MGM stuff!

I emailed the program last week about the MGM courses at the GSBS and they said that selection for that program is highly competitive. They base their decision on a variety of factors including desire of the student to pursue a career in medicine and academic standing, ie GPA and MCAT scores. They also told me that if you express interest in medicine and accept their offer quickly you are automatically given a spot in the applicant pool for that program. Once they have accepted the entire class for fall 2009, an admissions committee meets up and looks at all eligible applicants for the MGM core. Then they select the students based on the aforementioned criteria and notify them via email before orientation in August.
I am hoping that I can take the MGM core, it would look really good on a med school app!
As for now I am trying to get my email account set up with UMDNJ, there was some miscommunication and I am having some issues with it. There is also a mountain of medical forms that I have yet to fill out. I'm in the middle of midterms and studying for the MCATs so that's one more thing on my to-do list! 🙂

Thanks for the MGM info Titan.

Anyone contemplating doing the MBS and/or MBS+MGM program while working full time?

Thanks for the info guys - appreciate it

maxim - i'm not. I tried to juggle too many plates at once during UG so i'll be concentrating on the MBS program and maybe doing some EMS work on the side

I think if I were accepted into the MGM course I would not be able to juggle working full time in addition to the course load. It's just because I assume the MGM course is pretty intense and if you're accepted to the program there will be some pretty high expectations to do well. I am currently a tutor for gen bio and other life science courses, so I am going to see if there are any tutoring positions that I can get, but I don't think I'll be working full time.

Thanks for sharing Rob and Titan.......In line with what you guys said, just spoke with Dr. Wagner and was informed that MGM while working full time is not feasible. 4 hour lectures at 9am 3-4 times a week would defintely not be allowed at most jobs.

I think I will go with 8 credits per semester which is managable and gives me full time student status, which in turn qualifies me for fin. aid. If anyone has any other schedule ideas, please share. For example, if you know someone that took X class and X class for a total of X credits and it was still managable. I guess I;m just trying to find out the max amt of credits I can take in the evenings without imploding.

Some courses she advised would be good for allopathic which will be given this fall:

Histology
Fund. of Pharmacology
Viruses, cells and disease - very hard virology
Stem cell bio and applications in modern medicine

She also said you may want to avoid special interest classes like Bioterrorism when applying to MD.

So for the MGM course, I know it is a core of 8 credits, but what courses are associated with that particular core, ie what courses compose the 8 credits, and do you take special medschool-esque electives like histo?

Hey Titan, the fall 2008 schedule says it is 7 credits actually. As for content, my gf took it last year and it was a smorgasbord of pathology, microbio, mol. genetics and i beleive some neurology divided into MGM 1 and 2.

Awesome! That's what I was hoping for 😍

Hi guys,

Anyone having trouble setting up their account on https://startup.umdnj.edu/ ?

i cant enter mine as i dont think they have processed my acceptance yet. I sent the check last week and they said it could take as long as a week after they get it

got my stratford acceptance today but as a non matriculated student. not that it really matters anyway. either way that's one less concern now but I was always more concerned with Newark. Hopefully I get an acceptance there. =/

Rob, thanks. I'll give it till friday. Hopefully it just some technical issue.

Best of luck on that acceptance Userah. I am about 80% certain I am attending at this point so maybe I will see you guys there!

I was going to re-check on Friday as well. I am not super-concerned.

I'm still undecided as to where I am going to go - still waiting to hear from UConn, Tufts, BU and I have an interview at UPenn on Monday.

Newark would be great but I'm just going to attempt to be patient on this one haha

congrats on your acceptance userah!

Congratulations Userah! I know Newark is your #1, so I hope you hear from them very soon 🙂

Now quick question, I am trying to figure out your timeline because it is very similar to mine. When you called Stratford that day asking about the status of your application, did they say it was sent to review already, or it was sent that day. I post the same day as you after speaking to Krystle and she told me that my application was sent that day to review. Just trying to guage when I will hear. Any info will be helpful, thanks!

for stratford, it was already sent to the review board. i was just waiting on their decision. it was newark where my application got sent to the review board that day. i'm hopin either end of this week or next to hear back from them. Maybe i'll give them a call tomorrow and see if they can give me any updates. hope that answered your questions =)

Anyone has any thoughts on housing?

You can try to the housing directly with the school, you can live in the little townhouses in Society Hill..or try housing at this place down the block that is pretty cool..University Centre 250 Central Avenue..
univcentre.com, def check out all these places..and of course at UMDNJ there are always postings for apartments for rent.

Univ. Centre is mad expensive! My brother goes to NJIT and lives in Newark and if I attend I'll live with him. 3 bedroom nice apartment in a decent-ish area for $1800. $600 each plus utilities with off-street parking & laundry hookups is pretty good.

Oh and Kudos to everyone on their acceptance!

dr. chuck, i will be withdrawing from stratford as well. hopefully that improves your chances of getting in there since you wanna go there haha.

as for albuterol, congrats man! that's two pre-dents now. we're gonna be best buds next year haha. work together to get into umdnj dental together! =) see you guys during orientation!

for all those still waitin, good luck guys! hope to see everyone on this thread getting their acceptance letters soon and joining us next year.

aww thanks! Stratford is my #1, just been in Nwk for too long, wanna swtich it up lol.. butim really nervous and hoping I get that letter soon..making me even more nervous now that almost everyone has heard something..😕

Yeah you're right..i live there now and its a bit..

So guys..guess what? I got the rejection letter from Stratford today. 🙁 I guess it wasn't meant to be. Newark is still an option for me and if accepted will definitely be going there. It is just a matter of waiting now. I guess I am kind of nervous because if Stratford rejected me cause my "app wasn't strong enough"..I know this is negative thinking but I fear that Newark might reject me for the same reason. I am trying to remain optimistic though...but man rejection hurts and it has me thinking of mad different things right now lol.

damn sorry man. if it makes you feel better, stratford accepted me as a non-matriculated student cuz my application wasn't "competitive" enough but i was accepted at newark as matriculated. So from my experience, Stratford seems to be more selective than Newark. And if i'm not mistaken, Stratford's class size is smaller than newark. That being the case as well as you having applied early, I think you still have a fairly decent shot of getting into Newark. What were your stats if you don't mind me asking? Because my GPA was pretty damn low and I still miraculously managed to get in haha.

Dr. Chuck I'm sorry to hear that you got rejected from Stratford. Hopefully Newark will bring better news. I have also heard that Stratford is more selective since they only admit 60 in the Fall and 60 in the Spring. Did you apply to any other masters programs besides the 2 umdnj ones? Keep the faith dude...I'm hoping it works out for you!

Sorry to hear it DrChuck, but as the old cliche goes 'one closes another one opens...'

yeah come to think of it, Stratford is a lot more selective than Newark, so hopefully that will work in my favor. I am praying that it does...my GPA, well, its below a 3.0 and above a 2.5..i am working on it now to make sure that it gets closer to the 3.0 mark, damage control to say. I just had to retake a few science classes (OUCH) so that is why its so low...oh the webs we weave lol 🙁

nah I was going to apply to other programs, but lack of an MCAT score and a low GPA just had me hold that off until I heard from both UMDNJ programs..

Sorry to hear it DrChuck, but as the old cliche goes 'one closes another one opens...'

yeah you're def right Rob...

thanks guys for the good words..😀

We can start applying for Fall 2009? I'm retaking my MCAT. Can I still apply? What MCAT scores do they accept?

What the deadline for Stratford Campus?

deadline's June 1st for both Stratford and Newark.

What program?

Post bac or Master in Biomedical Science?

July 1 for Stratford Master in Biomedical Science

The deadline is for the masters in biomedical sciences program. I'm not sure about Post bacc programs though.

it's July 1st for stratford? could've sworn it was the same deadline for both stratford and newark. I guess I'm mistaken. my bad
