UMDNJ-SOM Discussion Thread 2012 -2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Let me clarify, On June 24th, AACOMAS confirmed me saying they sent my data to UMDNJ. I turned in my secondary then. I got an email on July 9th saying they received my primary and then an email on July 10th saying I was complete. Def call

I've been complete apparently, just didn't get an email. Glad I checked! Now to wait ...

Got a phone call today informing me that if I have 30 graduate credits they view my graduate GPA instead of my uGPA, which is a 3.9 compared to a 2.9. So I have 29/30 completed and I'm waiting on the last one to be updated in their system.

anyone know an easy way to get to the stratford campus from nyc?
i have an II on the 6th and im trying to figure out a good way to travel...

Anyone else received this call? If it's true, then it is absolutely awesome! BTW, 30 credits make me think you're at GSBS, right?

Negative, not a grad student but that's pretty awesome though! Still working on my motivation to finish this secondary....damn $90 lol

They are taking forever to process mine. Been about a week and still wasn't charged the $90. I'll have to call and see what's up because they never answered my emails.

Just wondering about how long it took most ppl to get the 'your file is completed' email? i saw one person say they got it about 2 weeks after, is that about normal for the rest of you too? Ive mailed my secondaries in over a week ago and am just wondering how long i should wait before calling to confirm they received it.

It must have been quick, because my committee letter (last part of my application that was missing) was sent out on the 15th. My university says it takes about a week for med schools to receive it, and I got the "file complete" email on the 21st.

Hello guys,

The secondary essay is limited to one page.. but does it mean single space? or double space?

I did a hard science M.S., not geared towards medical school at all (Temple). We're actually only required to have 28 credits, but I had to take an extra credit in the summer, and I took an extra course in the spring that got me to 30.

Marisol said she was reviewing my application and saw that I only had 28, because my school didn't have the grades until weeks after they were do. She told me to send my new transcripts and update AACOMAS. I imagine if you submitted with 30 credits then they are already taking it into consideration. She was probably the nicest admissions staff I dealt with yet!

I saw a thread with others schools that do this, but I haven't been able to find it. I'm not sure if it was on SDN or not. I'm desperately trying to find it, so if you stumble across it, please let me know!

I don't think I've ever been so happy to finally be charged $90 out of my bank account! Haha. Now for more waiting! (In-stater)

Interview Invite September 13th! =D

I am instate as well. I had the option of interviewing September 4th but that would not be enough time to let me work know.

Glad to finally get the ball rolling with this school. Probably my number one choice.

For those of you who just got invites, when were you complete?

simmer down now premeds.... 🙂

for anyone who got an interview, how long after you were complete did you get the call and would any of you mind sharing your gpa/mcat?
despite the name change etc going on with this school, this is still prob my #1 choice.

Could a kind current student talk a little bit about the facilities and curriculum? I have an interview here and am from NJ. This is my number one school right now and I would love to get in.

How is the fitness center and other major facilities? I know that a few students can choose to do PBL, but what is the standard option? Is there a dress code/attendance policy?

Thanks in advance! I know its a lot of questions but it would be very helpful =].

There are adequate study areas throughout, so no worries there. The gym is on the smaller scale but more than most people need. 1st year classroom was recently updated and is comfortable for lecture even when it's a long day. There is a PBL curriculum, however it requires an additional interview after you've been accepted to the school (interviews for PBL are held towards the end of the cycle so don't feel like you're missing out if you don't have an early admissions interview). Only about 6-8 students each year do PBL, majority of the class is lecture based. There is no dress code. There is a mandatory attendance policy as per student handbook, however it is ultimately the decision of each professor. Lectures are recorded but are not available immediately after class is over so it may not be advantageous to wait on a recorded lecture to post. There have been occasions in the past where a lecture didn't record either in part or full (this is not the norm but know that it can happen). Let me know if you or anyone else have more questions

I was complete the 23rd of august and got an invite the 28th of august. I had submitted everything by the second of august.

My gpa is 3.1/3.0 with a 38 MCAT. Hope this helps and goodluck!

Thanks for the help! Very eager to interview here.

Wow everyone is interviewing in Sept seems like. Am I the only one going for Oct 5th?

I'm October 19th, because they want 1 month notice and a 1500 deposit if accepted, I figure I'll let more interviews roll in before then.

Fair enough. I'm just dying cause I see people apply later than me getting interviews earlier than me. I considered calling to see if they had anything earlier but I didn't want to be that guy.

I guess I should just shut up and be grateful with my stats lol.

Well if anyone gets an interview on Oct 5th, let me know so we can be the SDN crew haha.

Where did you get that info from, or were you just generalizing about DO school deposits? According to the DO CIB, it says that the deposit to hold your seat is only $185 for UMDNJ-SOM and that this fee is due according to AACOMAS guidelines. (Which means you have until december 14th to pay if accepted prior to november 15, and less time if accepted after on a sliding scale blah blah). Then I checked the school's website and found this in the student handbook:

"Tuition Deposit $ 185.00 NR
Each student selected for admission is given notice of
favorable action on his/her application and is allowed two
weeks to decide to enroll. (After July 15, the accepted
applicants must reply within one week.) The fee includes a
non-refundable $95 criminal background check fee."

http://som.umdnj.edu/education/undergraduate_medical/documents/StudentHandbook.pdf

So from this, it looks like the $185 deposit is due within 2 weeks of the acceptance notice if you plan to enroll or want to save your spot for the time being.

You are right that most DO schools want a much larger deposit in the thousands, but I don't think this school is one of them. Every school does it differently, just make sure to check the CIB or their own website for details.

Does anyone know the lowest MCAT accepted for IS?

This is correct. Deposit is only $185, of which $85 is used for a background check. There is no second deposit required.

Hey guys, is there a heavy regional bias for this school? I'm applying from California

It's a state bias. But there has been some success with people from OOS getting in so I wouldn't give up hope.

didnt some people interview today? im curious how everything went.
