Yeah.. I got the postcard too, who's your orientation leader? Mine was from Christine 🙂.. I wonder if it is the same person for all of us.

Oh yeah I found my housing, it's on Pool St. 3 minutes from school (close to the UNE side of pool st, better neighborhood) away from the biddeford downtown area. 1 bedroom, loft style livingroom, 6 skylights, large kitchen with center island, dining area, large bathroom with personal WASHER and DRYER inside, includes heat, hot water, water, snow removal, garbage removal, and parking for two cars. $725.00 a month.

All i need is internet and eletricity. hopefully i'll keep everything under $800.00 a month. I think there is another apartment available below me that has 1 bedroom, 1 small bedroom/study, large living room, kitchen, and bathroom plus the same appliances and setup for 785.00 that is available...I guess if you're interested i can give you the contact info.

Kev

Could I please get the contact info if you don't mind DrKeys? My email addy is [email protected]. (I think there is another apartment available below me that has 1 bedroom, 1 small bedroom/study, large living room, kitchen, and bathroom plus the same appliances and setup for 785.00 that is available...I guess if you're interested i can give you the contact info.)

Also- has anyone figured out the whole financial aid thing yet. I got my financial aid letter yesterday and part of it is covered by subsidized and unsubsidized loans but then there is this supplementary loan for like 20 grand! Has anyone started figuring this thing out yet?

PS- Congrats to everyone who got in and can't wait to meet all of you during orientation on the 7th!

Does anyone know what activities they have planned for us the week before?
And I didnt get any postcard from anyone 🙁

Don't worry they're coming, we all filled them out. I don't think these are your specific orientation leader, you'll find who they are later. This is just a hello

As far as activities, at minumum there's going to be a rafting trip and a bbq/bring-your-sig-other picnic prior to official orientation. We're also renting out a bar, going on a cruise and something else for you guys (which slips my mind) in the first two weeks of school.

Also, anybody who's interested, the boys of birch st. still have an apt for rent. Funished house, all utilities included, internet and cable, 5 mi. from school, 450/mo. Contact me for details.

Hey,
Any place cat-friendly? My wife and I are hoping to find a place close to campus and the coast that is also year round and cat-friendly.
As for FA: the Subs and Unsubs are Fed loans which you are "guaranteed"
the Supplemental loans are the private loans you apply for on your own that are credit based. The amount on the award letter is how much UNE will approve/allow you based on the 1st years budget. So, start to look for private loans with great rates from T.H.E, Key Bank, um...yeah there are a few places out there. 😀

Wow!! It is all so exciting! I can't wait for August to start!! The next four years will be amazing, and this is such a great beginning to it all!!! 😀

P.S. Welcome all newcomers, can't wait to meet you all in August!!

Hello all! Wanted to take a second and say congratulations to all of you and to keep hanging in there Redwings54. As many of you have already been facing the challenge of residence, I will venture into this next step this month. I've managed to escape work the last weekend of April to visit Maine and lock in a place to stay. If any of you all are in the area and have time, I would love to meet you all. I'll be there from 28 - 30 APR. Once again, congratulations and I'll be looking forward to placing the faces behind the names.

Very Respectfully,
munchi84

One thing about "supp loan" lenders: check if they have an aggregate limit. THE has a limit of ALL EDUCATIONAL LOANS (this means undergrad, subsidized stafford, unsubsidized stafford and the total of your alternative loans) of about $220K. I don't know about you, but my FA award was $61K. This means that if I didn't have any undergrad loans (and unfortunately I do have a small amount) I would still be borrowing $244K - and that's over the THE limit. So watch the fine print.

So looks like the Maine Medical Loan is the way to go, I didn't like the T.H.E terms compared to MML's fixed rate. So which lender are you choosing Shyrem? I think I'm going with MML.

I'm also going with MML. I can't take the aggregate limit of the others. *sigh*

Educational loans really need to be revisited. How long has it been since the limits on Stafford loans were raised? And yet tuition hikes are a common occurance. In-state students can't go to their own state schools some places on just stafford loans anymore.

yeah... we need a democratic reform because the current republican regime is just not doing the job of directing the funds to help its citizens living in the US, instead funds are flowing outside in supporting WARs, drilling oil off foreign coast, and building barrier to stop immigrants.

I agree with doing something about illegal immigrants - we pay millions in free services that we give them for being here illegally. Colorado alone spends something like $800 million dollars on illegal immigrant services. Insane. I could do an awful lot with that money.........

Not only that, but I'm not sure I like celebrating Mexican Independence Day. We don't celebrate ANY other country's independence day - not Canada's, not France's, not even the tearing down of the wall in Germany. Why Mexico's Independence Day?

Bottom line is we need to start over with our country's budget. We spend a TON of money on stuff that we really shouldn't, and not enough on stuff we should. Unfortunately, I think that would also send our country into a massive depression/recession when we take away subsidies that folks have relied upon for years that artificially inflate or deflate prices on certain commodities.

Question on the MML. When did you receive the supplemental information? I received my letter with limits and amounts from FAFSA but nothing about secondary. I've monitored your previous discussion about June time frame but when should I contact UNE FINAID and worry? You are definitely my hero to manage a husband, kids and take on medical school! Any help on this would be appreciated.

munchi, did you get your FA letter from UNE? It should have Stafford sub, Stafford unsub, and "supplementary loan" limits. The supplementary is also known as an alternative loan. This is what MML is. The supp loans you have to apply for yourself. There is a link to MML's website on line, but they recommend you do NOT apply for those loans more than 90 days prior to the start of classes. I'm planning on filling out my MML application forms June 1.

I recommend you take a peek at your credit report to see if you'll need a co-signer or not.

Shy,

Yes, I did receive the FA letter and I've already checked my credit report. I've been very fortunate and have built some positive credit history. I will also await for the June 1st date and apply for the MML. Thanks for the information.

Not abad idea to check you credit history annually for discrepancies.

Hmmm when did this turn in to a politics forum. Don't get me started about this issue. Especially since some in the US think that the CANADIANS are dangerous. Some need to lay off the blame canada south park clip.

Hi Everyone,
Hey guys,

It looks like there will be three of us in Biddeford around that last weekend in April. The earlier part of the weekend Thurs/Fri would be better to meet up, as the latter part will be filled with weddingness... Anyway, let me know if you guys want to do something, and if anyone else will be in the area.

Jess

Meeting up sounds great. I will arrive at like 12:05 am on Friday. In order to meet with Docbill we probably could do breakfast near Boston. If you need a ride docbill I will gladly give you one to Boston. Here is my e-mail address and we can work out the specifics. [email protected] If our schedules are too hectic then we can take a raincheck and wait till August.

Hey guys!!! My name is scott and I am just finnishing up my second year at UNECOM. I'm heading to Bangor next year and my wife and I will be vacating our apartment/condo the very end of june/ beggining of july! We do not own the place, but it is very nice and the landloard has been so great to us that we are trying to help him our by spreading the word to COM students.

The apartment is on two floors. Two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. Small attic w/ ladder access. The first floor is really one big room which has a kitchen/dinning room and a large living room. There is a glass sliding door in the back which provides access to a private back deck and semi private back yard. There is also a full basement. The place is not furnished but does come w a stove, dish washer, fridge as well as its VERY OWN WASHER AND DRYER!!! It is VERY Clean w/ newer appliances and new paint. There is plenty of parking at the complex and is maintained by landscapers and snow plowers... you only have to clear off your front porch. If you want more info or to come for a visit, just PM me and we can get in contact that way (i'm still weary of posting my email address for all to see)!

Thanks for listening to me. Now relax and take a deep breath! You guys will all love it here at UNECOM and have a great time.

Good Luck to All!

Scott

Hey Scott,

What's the address of the apartment and the rent per month for the place? and if you have the landlord's contact info that will be great too. Thank you!

ShyRem,

How do you know if you need a co-signer just by looking at your credit report? Wondering if I'm missing something...

You look at your credit rating, for me my score is like 732 which is good close to excellent, the average is about 650 to 710 or something. if you're below that, it means you might need someone to co-sign. if it below 600, then i would think you definitely need somebody to co-sign.

Other than that, you look at your open accounts for debts, and past closed debt accounts, and calculate your liability, if the liability is low and you have always pay on-time, you might not need a co-signer... however, if you liability is high and miss payments here and there.. you'll definitely need a cosigner.

Thanks, that helps a lot!

Hello guys and gals,

I just received word this afternoon that I have been accepted the United States Air Force's HPSP program! Is there anyone else taking advantage of this program? Hope all is well.

Hello all,

My wife (Eva - who is just finishing up her 2nd year at UNECOM) and I are looking for one more female housemate for next year. CTgirl2010 (Sita) is our other housemate. Our house is about 8 minutes from campus in a nice residential area and has a nice yard with a deck overlooking a private backyard. The bedroom is large (17' x 13') with a big closet and there is plenty of room in the kitchen as well as plenty of shelf/fridge space for everyone's food. You and Sita will share your own bathroom. We have off-street parking, laundry, wireless high-speed internet, and a really nice home theater system (50" plasma HDTV and Bose Surround Sound - you know, in case you are finished with your studying 😀 ). We are looking for someone who is friendly, respectful, neat, and values a good home study environment. There's also a piano which you are welcome to play (if you play). I am a software engineer working on web applications for Dartmouth-Hitchcock hospital and I work from home a few days a week. Eva will be doing her clinical rotations in Southern Maine this year. Rent is $530/month which includes all utilities, the internet, and unlimited long distance phone. Also, if you find a comparable place that's cheaper, even after signing a lease (through June 15th) then I will lower the rent to match it, so you can be sure you are getting a good deal. If you are interested, PM me or email me at [email protected] and I will send you pictures of the house and all the rooms as well as a phone number where we can be contacted.

Cabot (and Eva)

Congrats Steve! 👍 I too found out today that I was selected as well!
Then I told my recruiter that I need a couple days to think about it b/c I've been accepted to the Navy as well. He seemed very offended. I'm prior AF so, maybe he feels I'm a traitor...nah...then he asked me WHY/WHAT the Navy has to offer that is enticing me more. I told him straight up: better Flight Surgery/Aerospace Medicine program and also the Navy has clinics here in my hometown. AF doesn't have either. Congrats again to you!
Cheers,
Steve F.

Hey Steve,

I'm sure I don't have to tell you this since you were in the AF, but the fact that the Navy has clinics in your hometown doesn't even remotely guarantee that you'll wind up there. As a former AF officer, I can say that personnel (and specifically assignments) works in strange and mysterious ways... 🙂

Steve, I know Janelle Marra is doing the Navy program so she could probably tell you all about it. She is a 2nd year and is really awesome. She is on pipeline and also has AIM so I would just drop her a email and she should be able to give you some good advice. Take care.

Hi everybody,

I am an accepted student starting at UNECOM in August. I set up a group map at Frappr.com for all accepted students so we can get to know each other a bit before orientation. So far there are only 2 members so I am trying to get the word out.

go to:
http://www.frappr.com/unecomclassof2010

A friend of mine who starts at LECOM in August found a place to live and housemates through the LECOM map so it's a good way to network as well.

I look forward to meeting all of you in August.

Best,

Todd Kitchens

My significant other and I are moving to Biddeford at the end of this month, and are looking for two strong individuals in the Biddeford area on Saturday, the 29th of April, who would be willing to help me move a few heavy (about 7) furniture items to a third floor apartment in order to make some quick money.

We will be compensating each person for two hours work at $25/hour. If interested (or if you know of any contact who might be interested), please send me an e-mail via my username on SDN, or you can send me a private message.

Best,
JChandy

So is anyone going to be up in the area this coming weekend? I can make it out there for a night or a few hours? Lets try to get together if we can. Also, DocBill, how about updating that class names list? Maybe we can put where we are from too? As for me, I am 23 and from Northfield, NH, just a little north of the capital Concord. Take care

Hey there future UNECOMers,
First office congratulations for your acceptance. I currently am a Fellow at the school and can tell you that you made a great choice.
I am posting because I am entering my last year and my family and I have decided to put our HOUSE on the market. We would like to avoid the cost and hassel of selling through a real estate agent. We bought the house when we first moved here, I have sinced remodeled and updated the house.

Here are the specs:
3 Bedrooms
1.5 Bathrooms
1368 square feet.
Brand new kitchen with dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove, microwave, fridge with ice maker
Brand new windows on first floors
Full cellar with new windows
Full walk in attic with new floor (we use it for storage, could be finished into 4th bedroom or game room)
HUGE fenced in backyard.... great for kids to run around!
Large drive way (we have fit 6 SUV in it at one time)
Ethernet plugins in each room... totally computer ready
Roof is less than 10 years old
Furnace is less than 10 years old
New porch on front of house
Deck on back of house overlooking back yard
Shed in back yard
And much more.........

This would be a great investment for a family coming to maine or someone who wants to buy some real estate for investment and rent it out or get some roommates

👍 We are asking $170,000 with some marginal room for negotiations. 👍

If anyone is looking for a house and would like more info and pictures, please contact me @ [email protected]. I have family in the real estate business that could help you get a loan and a family member who can do all the paper work.

Only serious inquiries please and good luck with your transition to UNECOM! 🙂

Wook, alas no. But I am hoping for the best. I will either be a 2010er or a 2011er. I prefer 2010 just cause it sounds better, not to mention the cool people I have met here. Hopefully will find out sometime in the next few weeks. Take care.
