If it's a professor, talking with the secretary (and sharing a nice piece of chocolate) does wonders.

This is a great idea! My prof has agreed to write me a letter more than 2 months ago...but I'm still waiting desperately. She's doing research out of the country...I hope her secretaries will help me to remind her.
