University of Illinois c/o 2019 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Could you please check to see if your status changed in the portal for those of us that live super far away? I live in Florida and I'll be super anxious for the next week knowing it could come at any time. Also, wtf is up with some of these schools using snail mail when email is faster, cheaper, and more efficient?!?! I swear they do this to torture us. 🙁
Status page still says I'm in review :/

Also my letter says applicants who made it past this final phase had a cgpa of 3.50, a sgpa of 3.45 and a GRE in 65%. I'm not going to release my actual scores but they are incredibly close to this. For example my GRE was in the 60%. Oh shoot and I just remembered thi school averages ur GRE. So they got me on that one. Because the first time I took it it was not the best... Ha ha. Any whoo I'm still shocked!

Omg, if we need all three of those then I'll be receiving a letter soon...

I get all the schools' requirements mixed up... Does Illinois use ONLY cGPA, sciGPA, and GRE for the first round? So any applicant under those scores you just described will not make it to phase II where they look at non-academic factors?

Yes. If you pass the Academic phase, then they won't look at it again. Everything past this phase is based on your interview and holistic factors.

Well, both of my GPAs are under that. So I should get my letter soon... Too bad they don't consider non-academic factors with lower academic factors 🙁
Totally agree. I wish I would've done more research on the school before I applied. It's upsetting because I know I would do great in their program. But it's okay! Hopefully another program we've applied too doesn't weigh those things as heavily! It's hard to stay positive especially with this being finals week, at least for most schools but we have too! Remember we just need one yes! And heck we should be proud we made it this far!

I hope that's not the case for IS bc my gpas are above that but my gre is below

I want to go run and check the mail but then I remember

Actually they do deliver mail on Sundays now. . . And I should be receiving one soon too. I'm blaming @HowIMetYourPet for getting my hopes up because they got an interview last year with scores very similar to mine. :'(
My friend is in the program now this year! She had lower stats than those I listed! It just depends on the year !

Does that extend to letters as well? I thought it was only packages for people in major cities. But I'll check my mailbox here in Chicago later today and let everyone know any news I get. Here's hoping you don't get a letter either!

Oh, we don't get anything on Sundays, not even packages

Well I've gotten mail on Sundays but I live in Miami. I kinda hope it doesn't come today. I have my biochem final tomorrow morning and I'm stressed enough about that without receiving my first rejection.

Ugh, tell me about it! I have my biochem final this week too and I really need to spend more time with the TCA cycle and less time on SDN! Good luck on your final!

I'm worried now because I'm above all three of those stats, but not too significantly. Yet I have been told by their staff that my grades are "great" so I will have to wait and see.

I'm so sorry you got rejected 🙁 @plp13, does your letter have a date of printing on it? That way we can estimate when it was probably mailed and everyone can estimate when they'd get theirs too. This means the first round is done and a huge batch went out. Next round of rejections should be early January, and the cut-off for that round is strictly experience.

Same with Pinkpuppy, I have above all of those, but one of my categories is very close to what the cut off is.

I was told by Dr. Foreman that decisions on who to invite for interviews are based on BOTH phase I and phase II. There are initial rejections in December based only on Phase I, but then they reassess the applicant pool and invite applicants who are competitive in both Phase I and Phase II. But once you get an interview, that's when it's only Phase II and Phase III that count. I'm worried too... 😱

That makes me a little better... Checking the mail this week is going to be even more stressful now, haha.

When I get home I'll let you guys know the date on it!

It is dated Dec 2

One would think they would have updated the portals by now :/ I don't understand why they waste paper like this anyway, especially with the convenience of e-mail/portal.

Man this sux... I am at Cali and my GRE is super super close to the cutoff.... This is final week and I am going to be looking at mail everyday..

Virtual communication is quicker, but snail mail is a bit more formal. I'd actually prefer to be given an actual rejection letter. The school actually puts in a bit more effort that way, especially if they actually address you by your name. Most rejection emails are something like "Dear Applicant: We're sorry to inform you that you have been rejected. Please contact the admissions office after *this date* to schedule a file review." One of my portals last year actually offered me NO communication whatsoever. I just logged on and saw "REJECTED." In all caps like that, too.

Ha ha Illinois let's you down nicely. They didn't offer a review but they used my name and just said I didn't make it to the next phase and my app is no longer under consideration haha

I'm actually completely fine with that rather than wasting resources for formal letters. Even for acceptance letters, I would prefer not to receive actual mail, it's more wasteful with no benefit.

Well, that's not what the rejection letter and the same person told me last year haha. Perhaps things have changed slightly. He (and my letter) told me that selected interviewees had significantly more experience than I did and mentioned nothing whatsoever about academics. I probably still have the letter somewhere....back home 1000 miles away. But he straight up told me during my file review that once you pass the grade eval, your hurdles are having competitive experiences, then having a good interview + competitive experiences to receive an offer. He actually talked to me for close to two hours about my application and pretty much told me exactly what I needed to do to get accepted this year (hopefully it works!), and we went over the process a few times. But like I said, always possible that they altered the process a bit since April.

But now that I think about it, I reread the wording @plp13 typed up from her letter from last year too. I'm pretty sure that's the cutoff, so if you're higher than those numbers I think you might be able to stop worrying until the next batch goes out, when things are a bit more up in the air. I don't know how they determine the status of applicants who are high enough in 1 or 2, but too low in another.

I am so nervous to even go home now...I thought we would have a short while still before we heard from Illinois.

You certainly may be right that they've changed it, and I may be the one with outdated information. I actually met with Dr. Foreman in the summer of 2012 before I started my pre-med post bac, and I took a bunch of notes during our meeting that I've been reviewing. So I'm not sure about the answer to that. Can any current students chime in if they know?

I think I should be alright to get past Phase I with my numbers, but I'm a bit neurotic, haha. :nailbiting:

They interview about 130 IL residents and 200 OS. They give the majority of seats to instate residents and since naturally there are less IS that apply the grade cut off may be a bit more lenient than the OS cut off - as always depending on the applicant pool. Just something to consider for all you IS that are worried.

You're not alone haha. My stomach dropped when I read that a letter has gone out! I should pass phase I. My file review left me beaming and I feel this school is my best chance, so I'm freaking out!

I just realized I'm not gonna be home until after my Michigan interview. I'm trying to call them to see if they could inform me of my status over the phone but nobody picks up. Are they like UF where they stop taking calls during parts of the admissions cycle?

It's still before 9am here in Illinois, so they're probably just not open yet. I would try again in 20 minutes.

They won't give out statuses over the phone. It looks like @pinkpuppy9 is right. I was told by them just now that the first phase involves then setting a cutoff point based purely on numbers. I was also told that people above the cutoff point may also be rejected at that point so I hope the opposite is true.

According to last year's rejection letters, this "cut off point" was presented as an "average" of those accepted through Phase I, so there is no accurate way to gage where you stand until Illinois tells you....bleh

Does anyone know if these rejections were sent to both IS and OOS?

U of I is my in state school and I feel pretty hopeful about it. Hopefully I will be classmates with some of you! It's a great school, I grew up a couple miles from it. I know a lot of the teaching vets and they're great. Fingers crossed though!

Go Illini! 🙂

This makes me feel better, because my GPA is a bit lower, but my GRE is a lot higher. So hopefully it averages out for me and I still get past the cut off. I guess nothing to do but wait now, which is just annoying at this point

Welp nothing in the mail for me today. I wonder if they evaluated everyone or just OOS?

Nothing in the mail for me today and I'm OOS (New York).

Anyone know if they send the letters to you permenant address or current address? I go to school in Georgia, but my permenant address is in California. I'm just wondering where I would expect it.

Schools typically only use permanent addresses if they send something to your current address and it gets returned to them. It's just like a back up plan. You should get all communication to your email or current mailing address.

Yeah they should send it to your current mailing address, that is why they asked for how long that address would be applicable.

Then what's the point of establishing a cutoff? 😵 Perhaps they meant if parts of your stats were above, but another part below the cutoff? Hopefully?

@plp13, do you mind keeping us updated on your portal status?

I'm OOS, Missouri resident, and also haven't heard anything. I'm a bit surprised, honestly, as my science GPA is rather low and my cGPA is a bit below 3.5. Maybe my GRE scores made up for it? I'm hoping no news is good news, but after my rejection letter from Mizzou last year got lost in the mail, I'm paranoid! I guess I'll keep my fingers crossed and contact them if I don't hear anything next month.

I agree that I wish more schools would switch to email communications. I agree just a portal update is rather blunt, but IMO an email is plenty formal. I think some schools send an email and a follow-up acceptance letter/package, which would then give you a physical memento of your acceptance, which sounds nice. Anyway, email sure beats anxiously checking the mail every day, and there's less risk of emails getting lost!

Nothing yet (OOS, Cali).... But my postman did deliver my neighbor's mails to me yesterday.....

I so wanna go knock on everyone's door and ask "Hi did you see a rejection letter?" Lol
