University of Illinois c/o 2019 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
At my last 2 interviews they have introduced themselves completely, with job titles and everything. The eye contact part is easy for me. What I can't handle is the "Hi I'm Dr. Superamazingvet. I'm the head vet at XYZoo and also cure canine lymphoma as a hobby. Oh and I have 3 specialties in things you can't even pronounce. Now tell me about yourself."

Lol omg that cat! I mean I guess all I can say is that they're probably not trying to intimidate...It might be easy for me to say that though since I helped out with the AAZV conference this past year and saw all of these super accomplished vets in shorts and tank tops in Orlando haha. I am lucky enough that my last internship has gotten me much more relaxed about talking to strangers.

Isn't there a 3rd or 4th year student on the panel, too?

A 4th year is there, too! So one faculty member, one practicing veterinarian, and a 4th year!

Does anyone know if this interview is closed or open file? At one of my previous interviews only one of the interviewers had read my file and the other two knew nothing about me so they could be unbiased and I thought that was kinda cool.

I am under the impression that these interviewers know nothing about you! This is strictly a behavioral interview.

Honestly I can go to both. I'll be there the entire day on Sunday so I have time to kill and I hate being alone in a hotel room. I'd rather meet people and socialize.
I brought Cards Against Humanity and Bananagrams if people are into playing some games too! (And I'll be there Sunday, but not Monday evening)

I am getting really nervous and it is only Friday!

Question about attire in relation to the awful weather: Not sure if there is snow on the ground on campus, but regardless, it is cold and I'll probably be wearing boots until I get inside where I'll change into professional shoes. I'm going to have to carry around boots/extra clothes in some sort of cumbersome bag... Is this an understandable thing or should I just be carrying a briefcase/professional bag and ditch my bag of clothes somewhere before the interview.

Is anyone else worrying about this ridiculously small issue like I am? Hahahah 😛

At previous interviews there have been areas to hang up coats, so I just left my boots there. Not sure if IL has a similar set-up, but I'm sure you can find a place to stash them so you don't have to carry them around. And yes, I'm definitely worrying about small stuff like that too so you're definitely not alone! 🙂

It is very warm down here and everything is melting today. There is no place to put stuff at the school. I would try to carry the least amount possible. A lot of people bring someone, so they just leave their stuff with them.

I would try to keep the extra goodies to a minimum. It will be cold, but only when you are outside, honestly I wouldn't even bring a jacket, just bare the cold until you get inside. The snow is melting the the sidewalks are clear for walking, so don't expect a frozen tundra.

My flight is right after my interview so I have to even bring my backpack, coat, and a change of clothes with me to the interview. Do you think this will look super unprofessional?

You can put your bag outside the interview room and just ask the next person if they'll watch it for you. I saw people change clothes for the past 2 years. Make it work!

I wouldn't wear different shoes. The side walks are clear so I don't see the need for boots, just don't walk in the snow.

It looks like we'll have great weather on Monday! What a nice break after the past few weeks of blizzards, cancelled flights and rescheduled interviews!

Braving the beginning of ANOTHER snow storm in Boston to fly out to Illinois! See you all tomorrow 🙂

I am also braving the storm in Boston as I fly out!

You guys will be happy to see that the ground is delightfully snow-free when you arrive. Much of the snow is gone thanks to yesterday's delightfully warm temperatures. It's no California, but it's certainly better than a snowstorm.

Safe travels everyone.

What are people thinking about meeting up tonight? I'm just not sure where the best spot to meet would be...

Be careful if you're driving from Chicago. I just got here and you can barely see anything.

See you guys tomorrow!

Will there be somewhere I can change once I get there? I'm driving in the morning straight from work, but I don't want to wear my interview clothes for the full 2h drive.

There are bathrooms but that's about it in the Basic Science building. There is a locker room in the hospital, but I don't think you can go in there. That's all I know about, I usually change in the bathrooms for anatomy lab so I think that would be okay.

Ahh landed in Chicago. Getting nervous, but can't wait!

It's supposed to be 31 and cloudy here in Urbana tomorrow!

Made it to the hotel for the night! Also a 6 hour drive for me, but my dad drove so I can't complain.

What is presumably the downtown area is pretty dead. Eating at Dublin O'Neil's! Hope everyone makes it just fine!
You are not leaving this place without meeting me! We've been through too much together with these schools for us to not meet in person. 😛
