University of Miami, Class of 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know I want my seat at UM@FAU to be open, (but that's for the musical chairs game...sorry)!

Anyone else know if UM@FAU still has open seats right now?

(McMD - you made me crack up - are you going to Main Campus or FAU? -- FAU I would presume by your comment - or are you trying to get out from main campus to go to FAU? By the way -I know people have confirmed mutliple times that the main campus is full for now)

this is directed at any 3rd or 4th year med students at UM who happen to be perusing this thread...were there any clinical faculty members or instructors that you particularly liked or found to be very supportive

A friend of mine just went to the FAU open house and liked it so much, she's switching over the Boca campus (or she's going to attend Georgetown). Either way, someone from Boca should be able to move on over to the main campus.

HI Labelwhore ...

I'm in the same hotseat as you - so I'm not at UM obviously. But I do know of one really cool professor right off the bat. I shadowed him a few times.

PEDRO GREER, M.D. :D

He's Professor of Homeless Medicine at UM and Faculty Advisor for a Club called PW-GAS - People Who Give a **** :)

I've spoken to many students who say he's an awesome guy. He keeps a place called Camillus House - for the poor and indigent of Miami to come get treatment. He's a Hepatologist by traning though. Feel free to look into him. I'd definitely recommend him, and I'd ask to continue shadowing him if I go to school down there.

sounds like a really cool guy, thanks for the info algorhythmik

btw, even though i'm at fau like a lot of you, i'm like 99% sure we'll be able to transfer after may 15th

Glad you like UM for your textbook years. I want to stay in Boca! :p

Is that a thing for real? Homeless medicine??

Hey Caveman - get out of the cave and smell the stink! ;) j/k

Yes - Dr. Greer and that Student Group "People who Give a ****", combined an effort to help establish one of the first actual Departments of Homeless Medicine at any US Medical School. I don't know if it is the 1st of its kind, but its certainly not widespread. The professors and students who get involved help out at a free clinic called Camillus House, and because of a limited budget, often work with their teeth and the dirt under their nails so to speak.

It's a way cool thing they're doing down there. And Joe Greer is hysterical. He's half Irish, half Cuban - so, that makes for a VERY colorful character!

:)

PS: To get a better idea of what I'm talking about, he published a book about his life's work:

Poor choice. If anyone knows how to relentlessly torment someone for years and years and years, it's me. Why you picked someone choosing between pitt and miami to do this to, well, may your life be full of regret.... ;)

 @ Caveman (slash that, cavewoman)

Regret? Ha - I scowl at thee! --> aha!!!!!!!!!

In the Old English words of Chaucer when he accepted his first trophy for break-dancing at Rucker Park:

"BRING IT, SISTA!"

Speaking of Chaucer...did anyone else have to memorize the beginning of Canterbury Tales in middle English in high school?

Yes - I had an evil English teacher who wore 4-inch thick spectacles and was legally deaf - Ms Ruhala. She made us memorize the first page of Chaucer in Middle English. It was brutal for about half of us who actually did it. The other half of the class cheated and brought it in a huge poster that they raised behind Ms Ruhala's head so ppl in front presenting could spew forth the Middle English like masters. I felt so used. ARG

Yes. I still remember it too. Weird, isn't it? Did you all go to HS in FL? It must be a FL HS requirement if we all had to do it. :p

Yeah, I went to the IB Program at King High School in Tampa. Its odd though, I've never heard of anyone else memorizing it. Did any of you guys go to IB? Maybe it was an IB requirement...To this day, its still kind of an inside joke with some of my friends from high school. If anyone happens to over hear us saying, they look at us like we're insane.

No, we didn't have IB at my school. It was senior AP English literature, taught by the football coach. At first, I didn't want to take a class with the freaking football coach. But he actually turned out to be a really good teacher, and I ended up liking the class a lot. This was in contrast to his performance as the football coach, which was so lousy that every other high school in the district was playing us for their homecoming games. I don't think we won a single game the entire year.

You went to King? That's awesome, I had no idea you were from Tampa. A few years ago, you guys had a girl on Real World that graduated from King...and then last year, my school had a girl on the Real World (and my school is a relatively small prep school, also in Tampa). Craziness.

I met a girl from the Real World last night from Tampa...don't remember her name. I also met Alex from Laguna Beach (the blonde alex...who now has red hair). My cousin just turned 18 2 weeks ago and her sister turned 21 last week and flew into town from Houston yesterday, so we all went out to celebrate. I SWEAR I don't do gay things like that often.... (though I did have fun).

I also had AP english senior year at a Florida high school, though I didn't have to memorize whatever you guys are talking about (personally, I've never even heard of it)...so it wasn't a requirement for the state.

Hey You Guys:

I went to International Baccalaureate too, at Suncoast High in SoFla - although we had jokes for it it, like:

IB = Interested in Books

or

I. B., therefore, I B.S.

So - I think it's an IB rite of passage to read the freaking Canterbury Tales and know the first page or so in Middle English:
=================================================
Whan that Aprill with his shoures soote
The droghte of March hath pierced to the roote
And bathed every vyne in swich licour
Of which vertu engendered is the flour
Whan Zephirus eek with his sweet breeth
=================================================

Someone please tell me they're proud of the fact I still remember that. I can do Macbeth too, ooh, ooh, look:

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow
creeps in this petty pace from day to day
to the last syllable of recorded time
and all our yesterdays have lighted fools
the way to dusty death. Out, Out, brief candle!
Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that
struts and frets his hour upon the stage
and then is heard no more; it is a tale
told by an idiot ... full of sound ... and fury,
signifying <pause> NOTHING.

Oh yeah, who's your daddy? Who is THE IB NERD? Oh yeah. Right here.
Damn - I shoulda just kept my mouth shut, huh? --> :(

SHUT UP!

FYI - There are not available seats at FAU as of right now.

I attended the FAU Open House and was REALLY impressed. I have a seat at Miami that I will probably be trading in for a seat at FAU sometime in the next week or two. I am very excited!!!

Hook17 I remember you!!!

I have been following the discussion here for some time. As I understand it, money is a major concern. Understandable. Most of us do not have money trees.

I do not really know where to go to find a roommate, other than post up an informal ad up here. I have a 2-room apartment that I've put in a security deposit for. It is in Dominion Towers, and the rent would come out to be roughly 500/mo. That rent includes water, and gas, and sewer/trash. The place has an on-site laundry facility, plus parking comes with the deal.

I'd be looking for a female roommate (sorry guys), so if you're interested, let me know. I'll be part of the class of 2010 as well, so it'd be a good match. Please feel free to PM me and I'll give you more info!

I wish there was some clear way of meeting up with people and matching up with roommates, but I don't think the University really has an effective way of doing it. There are some places you can post up ads, but I don't think most people even know about them.

I AM also open to the idea of living on Brickell, if we can find a decent apartment.

But given how money is such an issue, why not just pay half of what you'd pay at Brickell and get a place at Dominion or Jackson Towers? I know these places are dumps, but hey. I've been living in a dump for the past 4 years (undergrad dorms in general), so what's another 4 years?

As for security at Dominion, its not really an issue. There is a guard downstairs and if you want to go anywhere at night and you don't feel safe, you can always have someone escort you. Guards are available for that. I personally have been at the med campus really late, and I think people get overly scared for little reason. Nonetheless, its quite manageable. There are lots of med students living at Dominion or Jackson Towers.

wee free woman -
you should also join the group MiamiMed2010 on yahoo unless you have already done so...students have success finding roommates through that

I joined the 2009 group last year and found my current roommate through Yahoo. For FAU students, we're currently working on the Boca Guide at ummsm.com.

Hey:

How did you come to know there are no openings at FAU?

I interviewed late March, and was told they were actually having trouble still filling those seats; that was the day before my interview.

Let me know what's going on. I hear back from Hinkley in about a week.

does anybody happen to know how the scholarship system works at miami...like how much do they usually give...how do they decide on who gets scholarships and so on

There is a form online with two essays that you can fill out, but apparently I am the only idiot who did it. The rest of these guys didn't do anything, and they still got scholarships. I think the most common amount is $10k per year. That makes Miami cost about the same as the other FL schools for in-staters.

thanks for the info...are you planning on attending miami "q"?

Hey, I filled that thing out too!

Anyway, I was told that the majority of scholarship recipients get their award right after being accepted, so I had lost all hope of getting one. Then lo and behold, one arrived in the mail! So keep the faith guys, they are still going out!

Wow! Really? I had lost all hope...I filled mine out in Dec./Jan. though :(

When did you fill out yours? Oh that would help so much! I reeeeally need a scholarship.

I filled mine out in early Feb. I'm OOS though so I don't know if they do in-state separately, but keep hope alive! Good luck!

Thanks!!! When I spoke with the Fin. Aid office, they said ~1/3 get a scholarship of some sort.

Yeah--I think you get an e-mail either way (someone correct me if I'm wrong). I received the e-mail really early too. I forget when exactly when it was sent, but I checked my e-mail at like 7pm and it was there.

Good luck! :luck:

Jon, They are also deciding on my file today too. They keep pushing it back so we'll see! Anyhow, I've heard from people who were rejected that they did not get an email. They sometime saw it on the status track page and all of them got a thin letter in the mail. Also, last I heard they were not accepting outright and had two options: a) reject or b) waitlist. Does anyone know if this is still true? Good luck :luck:

Don't be discouraged if you don't hear anything tonight or tomorrow, I heard back on a Friday after then met on Wednesday...

McMD said:

i got placed on the alternate list...i think the class was full when i interviewed 3/31 anyways...does anyone know the chances of getting off the OOS waitlist?

Hi There - I interviewed there in mid-March and heard I was on the Alternate List too this morning. I am however FROM Florida.

For the person asking about Out-of-State - I know for a fact that more OOS change their minds than FL residents particularly because many use UM as a safe school. On the same token, those OOS students are competing for a max of 35 seats in the class. No more, possibly even less. It's just their policy. Read the MSAR description on Selection Factors

I spoke to someone at UM this afternoon over the phone who also confirmed the class was "fully subscribed" right now as was the one at FAU. So - I am guessing the only good news possible is Alternate List. The only other choice is ... the R word, which shall not be spoken of, lol. I was also told not to expect any commoton until after May 15th. :(

I'll be playing Jack Johnson's "WAITING, WISHING ..." on repeat til then. :D

Good Luck to Everyone :luck:

 CORRECTO-MUNDO

Yes ma'am ... those are the only two options as of right now...

SINK -or- FLOAT !!!

This late in the game, I was told about 6-7 of every 10 students recently placed on the wait-list would have gotten an outright acceptance had they applied earlier/had they been interviewed earlier. Sucks, don't it?
