The closest thing to a second look weekend is the FAU open house. Several of the students I met last year were going to the Miami campus. They stopped by to meet some of their future classmates.

As of today, 32 people have signed up for the open house. I sure hope that more people plan on coming. You'll get nerdery envy once you see this place.

Why must you concern yourself with others besides me?

Sorry Labelwhore...won't be in S.B. this weekend.

Consider yourself fortunate that I won't be in south beach this weekend lest I blind everyone with all my winter pale glory.

wish i was going to miami this weekend. i'm stuck in school in boston.

Oooo, yes...I'll switch seats! 😉

South Beach will have enough on its hands feasting its eyes on my internal organs visible through my clear skin this weekend, thank you. I will see you next week in NC, and I can guarantee I will be bright pink. Hot!

Hey Guys:

I just interviewed about a week ago on Monday (27th March). I am supposed to hear from Dr. Hinkley by e-mail on April 19th/20th.

Does anyone know, be it directly or down the grape-vine, if the class is technically "filled" right now, meaning decisions given now are limited to Wait-List or Denied?

I'd be grateful for any pointers regarding this. Thanks! I'm keeping my fingers crossed til the 19th! 👍 LoL

Hi, someone reported a while back that the class was full and they weren't giving any outright acceptances anymore.

Though approximately 75% of the waitlist at UM gets accepted eventually from what the stats show. Good Luck!

Hey Everyone:

Although it was a long day in the bus that kept breaking down ... it was cool getting to know those of you who went.

I am now 100% sure I want FAU campus. 👍

Any thoughts regarding the campus choices for all of you??? 🙂

Can you tell those of us who couldn't make it about the second look? Thanks in advance. 🙂 I am also an FAUer.

Hey Q:

It was a much longer day than the actual interview I had down at Jackson. We got to FAU at 8:30. They had a nice breakfast of bagels and stuff like that, OJ, fruit juice, etc.

Dr. Hinkley was there too, and then they walked us into the big Biomed Lecture hall that's on your right as you walk in the main entrance. We got spoken to by the Dean of Students here, Dr. Markowitz, and then schpeels by honchos here like Dr. Gelb, Dr. Friedland, and Dr. Rose, and of course, Dr. Hinkley who was lively as ever. They then gave us a speech from a VP at Boca Raton Comm. Hospital.

They split us up into groups of 10-12 ppl, each with a 1st year med-student - I had a really cool guy who happens to be the class Prez - Gordon Markham, although there were a few 2nd years like Gia Marotto and Mike Hoosien who were there too.

They then gave us just over an hour-long tour of the Building =

*Anatomy Lab on 4th floor
*Class Rooms for med-students (aka the dungeon) - which by the way, now have plasmas on the rear walls so FAU students can see the students at UM sitting in lecture, just like the UM ppl can see the FAU kids; cool thing about those too, is the FAU kids have microphones with buttons on them - they can press the button, and their voice feeds into speakers at the UM lecture halls - like the voice of GOD! haha Apparently UM professors will sometimes call on the FAU kids in class to ask them stuff - you in the red shirt at FAU - what's the dissociation range for blah-blah-blah ... lol - it was pretty funny to hear about, but also cool to see how connected they are btwn schools.

*the common study areas (aka the Nerdery) - each student has a nice desk with overhead bookcase that has a lockable panel; side drawers that lock too; everyone gets their own desktop cpu with a flat-screen. and these cpus are arranged in pods around huge conference tables, so all they have to do is turn around in their comfy roller chairs, and they can all cram together after sitting at their individually brightly lit desks! 🙂

*Histo labs are cool. They have 5 or 6 electronic microscope eye-scopes that stem from a central driver microscope whose feed connects to the peripheral ones. So - one student drives the main mic, while the others sit and stare into the others.

They also showed us their student lounge - two fridges, someone said they want to get a pool table soon; they've got fooz ball if I recall. Two big couches with blankets and pillows for long nights, and two big arm chairs; big screen TV. The room is accessed with an ID card, as is the rest of the building. When you come to class in the morning, there's a big wall in the lounge with mailboxes where the faculty put hard copies of all their pdf/ppt for that day/week. So you don't have to even worry about that. The lunge also has a big book-case full of expensive texts that everyone shares - it seems a lot of the kids make due with only some books, and they say some are just not worth having because you dont have time to read them in a module. EX: Baby Moore instead of the big Moore for Anatomy.

The cooler part of the tour was that they gave us so much time that it felt like interview lunches at interviews, but with even more time to socialize and move around freely.

After that - they loaded us all into a tour bus outside, and took us to Bethesda Memorial. Speaking of which - it was an interesting ride - the bus stalled a few times on the way - it was suspenseful and Dr. Hinkley found it rather amusing. Dr. Markowitz who was following the bus in his car on I-95 didn't find it so ingratiating. haha

Bethesda is hands down the cleanest, nicest, most modern hospital I've ever been in. It feels like a ritzy country club. It doesn't even have that ever-present "hospital smell" that gets on your clothes, but which I kinda like, lol. It also has a robot that delivers meds to every floor of the hospital on its own. It beeps charge nurses to come unload its deliveries, and can move around you if you get in its way. VERY COOL!

At Bethesda, they gave us a really nice lunch in a huge ballroom catered by Carraba's: pastas, salad, foccacia bread, sodas/water, etc. Dr. Hinkley sat at my table with some lady from the Bethesda's Rehab Center. He's a really personable guy; after getting over how nervous I felt to sit next to the man in charge, I was actually amused at how pleasant he is to be around.

After the Bethesda Tour - they gave us a baggie with goodies like pens, towels, sunscreen, etc. We then left on a different bus (that didn't stall), and headed back down I-95 to Boca Raton Comm. Hospital.

We got a tour there, the highlight of which I would say is their Hyperbaric Facility. They have something like 8-9 Seachrest machines; surprisingly, they don't use them for diving at all - only wound healing, etc. And of course, BRCH had MORE food for us yet - Cannoli and chilled chocolate-covered strawberries with bottled water. Very good stuff. You get the impression that all these local hospitals are just FIGHTING over your attention, because they want to be associated with a quickly budding medical program. It's a really cool feeling! 🙂 Plus, besides getting kudos from Hospital Administrators, the Doctors love having the new generation around to teach stuff to. One guy at BRCH showed us their paperless digital Radiology department - it's cool - the ER can send him files immediately, he can read them, compare them to previous hospitalization record if any exist, compare them in real time, it fhtey're CT's he can computerize them into axial sections, or coronal 3D pictures side by side on these huge flat screen monitors tilted vertically.

The Radiologist was so happy to talk to us that the Admin guy had to scold and him and tell him to shut up because he was talking too much, lol. Still - cool to see such willingness to "teach the trade" so to speak.

We then got on the bus, went back to school, where they had ... wait for it ... DRUMROLL

MORE FOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 👍 😀

Little Sandwich bites and veggie slices, and chicken wings with BBQ sauce.

After that - people just kind of stayed at their whim, talking to med-students. I stayed for about another hour talking to Gordon Markham, the MS-1 Class Prez, and to a few other kids - another MS-1 named Eric, and a girl named Katie Hoctor. They were all really cool and laid back.

Surprisingly, most of them were placed on the waiting list and got in!!!!!!!!

=====>>>> So - that's good news to a lot of us. I heard one of the MS-2's - a big tall lanky guy (who's goofy as hell, as Dr. Hinkley would love telling you about - he dressed up as a drag queen at some party they had a while ago - and wore a coconut bra, lol) - his name is Chad - he got in the day before the first real day of MS-1 Orientation. And Eric - he told me that he had his bags literally packed for FSU CoM, and was ready to move into an apt there, etc, but UM called him like 2 days before leaving, and told him, you're in.

SO - there is HOPE people.

I also hope that gave some of you a good idea if you didn't go to the FAU thing today.

PS: I am also an FAUer too, if you couldn't tell. I'm so psyched about this place. It feels like family with such a small group, you know? 😍

Thanks so much, that was a great description of the day!

I have one semi-stupid question though. I know that one day they are hoping that the FAU program will be a 4-year separate campus (i.e. you do third/fourth year rotations around Boca). But right now, entering freshmen will still do their rotations in Miami at Jackson correct? If so, what exactly is the relationship with the Boca hospitals that you visited - are they just for preceptorships during first and second years? Are they for electives during third and fourth?

Also, is the med school building on the regular FAU campus? If not, where exactly is it located?

Thanks again!!!

That will not affect this year's students at all. Next year's MS-1 applicant group will spend all 4 years at FAU. SO, fret not!

As far as this C/O 2010, you will get some preceptorships and clinical experiences at the local community hospitals, although you will also travel down to Jackson quite often to do the same. As far as electives, I hear most ppl kind of make their own. One girl around here named Reagan is doing crazy amounts of surgery locally and at Jackson. Apparently, btwn FAU and Miami, the MS-1/MS-2's here at FAU seem to have a reputation for having more clinical know-how because they get more 1-on-1 time with clinical professors and local doctors that take them under their wing (and let them do much more than, at times, may even be safe and legal 🙂 , etc.) 😛

As far as the building, yes it's durectly on FAU campus; also, you will share it with researchers - they are on 2nd and 3rd floors. The 1st and 4th floors are pretty much all med-students - 1st floor classrooms, etc; 4th floor anatomy and locker-rooms/showers, etc. Although one small area of 4th floor has animal-testing labs, used by vet-techs, etc.

The Biomed Building has also got tons of parking 👍 , which you pay for a decal included in tuition once per year ($110.00). Here are some links to the building and some other info:

FAU College of Science

(follow this link to Biomed ---> you'll see how it's organized)
PS: Biomed is becoming its own separate department from College of Science very soon.

in case I was not clear with that before ---> you'll do preceptorships, etc for years 1 and 2 aronud Boca local hospitals, etc

Then, MS-3's and 4's move down to Miami and do their clerkship rotations at Jackson! 👍

Hope that helps some.

Algorhythmik, you rock! Thanks so much for that post. I'm sorry that I couldn't be with you all; it sounds like the food alone would have made it worth it!!! The good thing though is that I did pass my defense, although I'm technically not supposed to call myself a PhD yet until the degree is officially conferred upon me next month. 😛

Hey Q

What branch of Chem did you do your PhD in? Congrats! 👍

So although I kind of touched on this topic a month or so ago, I just need to get out a little more frustration regarding the fact that UM won't give us our fin aid packages until JUNE!! I called again to get some more info, and to find out if anyone can ever get the package before May 15. I learned a couple things:

1) They really just can't understand why someone would want the package before June. In fact, I was told that "I should have been given the budget when I interviewed." I explained that yes I have the budget, but it is the exact breakdown of fin aid that I need to get in order to make my decision. Which leads me to.....

2) Basically the reason they think it doesn't matter that we get the packages in June is that the fin aid office doens't give out any grants. It's only loans. Meaning the only scholarships come directly from the admissions office. So if the admissions office hasn't given you a scholarship, you can pretty safely assume everything else is loans. So that's pretty depressing.

And all of this is still frustrating since a person might want to have in writing that they qualify for max Stafford, or for some amount of Perkins before dropping other spots and committing!

I think I am just having a bad day. Anyway, this was my venting for the day!! (And if you can't vent here, where else can you?) 😛

Man that does suck...and Miami is not a cheap place to live. What other schools are you deciding on? You could just wait and see what sort of packages they give you and then estimate your loans for UM and decide from there. But to save money, I say we all just pile into one apartment and steal lunch money from the gunners.

I'm not giving you my lunch money. 😡 And you stink, penguin breath, so your apartment idea won't work. 😛

So what happens when ppl who have been offered scholarships, drop their UM acceptance in on May 15? Do they redistribute the scholarship $$$?

I'm still holding out hope for some $$$.

I second that motion, but I have a dog and a cat, so we'll have to steal extra money to feed them! 🙂

Not sure. They said that most people get their scholarships pretty soon after being accepted, but that just because you haven't gotten one doesn't mean you won't get one eventually.

what does the med school do in the event of a hurricane?

That's what I meant. Since I haven't gotten one now, I was wondering if there may be more scholarship $ available after May 15 (when people who have received scholarship $ turn down their acceptance).

THey do what everyone else does in a hurricane - close shop, stock up, and ride it out.

The Admissions Office was closed (and flooded) during Wilma I believe it was. And the med-school suspended classes for almost 2 weeks, I believe.

I know one UM@FAU student told me she studied part of a module by candlelight at home before school resumed. That's med-student dedication!!!

speaking of money... i'm WAY behind the times here and have yet to purchase an i-pod. do you think it's worth it? i don't want to spend $300 if i'm not going to use it to watch lectures but, then again, it would be nice to be able to fast forward through bits of lecture which were slow, etc. and save time. have you guys thought about this? ugh- i HATE money 🙁

HI THere:

I've spoken with UM and UM@FAU students. I know plenty of guys who have mp3 cd's and/or mp3 players with audio for lectures, which they put on while traveling/driving. I also know of a few girls at UM who have video iPods and take them to the gym - work out on treadmills, etc while listening to lecture.

Personally - I don't think you'll find time to REWATCH every single lecture ever given - I think it's more of an extra reminder ability - something you can go over again if something seemed unclear the first time around ... know what I mean? 🙂

SPeaking of money, UM will make ya: :barf:

The screens on video iPods are much to small to WATCH a lecture on, in my opinion. I would prob use my laptop to watch the lectures, and my mp3 player to listen to lectures. You can get an mp3 player (which is the same thing as an iPod and usually has better features) for a better price. A 1 gig mp3 player will probably only cost ~$100.

Apple is apparently going to come out with a "widescreen" ipod-- one whose screen covers the whole face of the player (I just saw it on cnbc) to replace the 60 gig video ipod. Probably not the cost efficient strategy you were looking for there, but it is cool.

thank you! maybe i'll check out that bank- freebies can't hurt, right?

Damn. I just bought my fiance the 30GB w/video, I'll have to get the widescreen for myself!! (actually he'll just steal it from me!! dammit!)

Hey People, Quick Question for yaz:

Say a student is accepted at School A and Wait-Listed at School B:

If that student accepts at School A by May 15th, can they still stay on the Wait-List for School B thereafter? Or --- are you done once you sign at School A, hence required to drop those Wait-Lists? 😕

[Reason I ask is because a friend of mine was planning on going to FSU last year, and he had his bags ready and packed to leave about a week before Orientation. UM then called him a few days before leaving and told him he was in off the Wait-List. He called FSU and told them he changed his mind and was now going to UM@FAU. I don't know how Kosher/legal this move is, you know what I mean?]

Can someone explain this simultaneous Wait-List and Accepted ordeal? 😱

Many Thanks, 👍

- Pablo.

No te preocupes; it's totally legal. After May 15, he can only have one acceptance, but he can have as many waitlists as he wants. If he get off a waitlist, he has a week or two to drop either acceptance. This continues on until he actually matriculates (goes for orientation) somewhere. So he was good.

Ay - MUCHAS GRACIAS Se~ora Quimica Organica! 😛 That makes things much clearer now. I was really confused how that interplay works. How was 2nd Look at Pitt? I got WLed. Have you made any decision as far as where you want to go now? I remember last time you were kinda unsure still! :luck:

OPEN QUESTION:

Does anyone know if UM @ FAU still has open seats? 😕
