I get the feeling that research isn't really all that important; like the GRE for some schools are just like "Oh, you took it. Good job." I think research and being exposed to it is valuable, but really for people who *don't* want to go into research, I don't see much of a point in it. It's just extra gunner icing on the cake.
Just like if you say you want to do large animal, but all of your experience is in small animal they don't like that. I'd argue, "I did so much small animal to know 100% that I don't want to do it." Haha. Okay, so maybe I'd just think that and not speak it.

May I ask your stats, just out of curiosity.

3.5 cum, 3.4 science, 145; 145; 4 (I sucked at the GREs), experience with wildlife, equine, farm animals, small , and exotics .... Bunch of diverse community extra curricular experience. Personal statement was loved by everyone including a vet school I spoke to about it. That could have helped. Dunno

They are not doing file reviews. I emailed Kathy she responded that the admissions committe was overwhelmed by the amount of nonresident applicants this year so they only wrote notes on those they were planning to interview. I was given a bunch of stats from previous years, but nothing helpful in figuring out what I need to do to strengthen my application for next cycle.

Have you posted your stats over in the What Are My Chances thread?

So it's just a problem of having so many applicants that they couldn't even consider all of them, then? Or did they just get tired of looking at the applications? Otherwise, it shouldn't be so hard to file reviews as they make their way through them.

I'm not sure if it's a standard across all vet schools in the country, but my school basically makes a list of people based on GPA, cuts the list off at the minimal GPA, then goes through the applications from there. Based on that, I don't get why I didn't get an invite. I have a 3.79 GPA, not to mention all my other application pieces were pretty good. I don't get it. -_- Oh well. Mizzou is a solid 10 hours from me and going there wasn't a life or death outcome for me; it just confuses me as to why some people who seem like solid applicants didn't get invited.

Mizzou also has a practice of cutting off those below a 3.0 GPA and then considers everyone after that, going through academics, LoRs, Experience, etc.

Keep in mind GPA is not everything. Your cumulative GPA, last 45, GRE, and number of average credits per semester is only 40% of the application. There's a bunch of other things to consider, and I've heard our adcom talking about not giving invites to 4.0s due to lack of experience but giving an invite to someone with a 3.4 GPA who shined in leadership/experience. They consider the entire applicant. While there is still a great chance you or anyone else that got rejected can do really well at other schools, it's just that there was so many competitive applicants that Mizzou could only invite 200 of them.

So I'm gonna keep this short because I'm procrastinating for finals. GPA and GRE are not the most important thing for Mizzou. Like for me-my GPA was below my class average. However, I worked multiple jobs and was able to explain why my grades were low. I'm sorry they are not doing file reviews but our actual administration / application folks are quite small and with an influx of applications I can see why they don't have enough time to talk to everyone in the detail they would want to.

It is super frustrating getting rejected from a school you weren't worried about. A lot of us have been there. I think posting your stats on the "what are my chances" are a good idea if you want a general opinion. Or you could try talking to some of the students that go here. (Maybe not be since I'm just a first year and only really know my class). Try not to obsess over it and move on to the next obstacle! Being bitter about a rejection won't get you far (and I've been bitter before haha). 😉

The reason you weren't invited to interview definitely isn't that they were too lazy to look through the applications. Going around saying that is really offensive to those who were invited.

Equally importantly, it's offensive to the people reviewing the applications. I know many of them personally, and they put so much effort into these applications, and making this process as effective, efficient, and FAIR as possible. It is definitely heartbreaking not getting an interview at a place, but be cognizant of what you are saying. I know several of admissions people check this thread, and saying things like that is hurtful, and is disrespectful to all of the time and effort they put in.

I think that's far from the truth and kind of rude to say. If you weren't granted an interview then something about your application can be improved compared to all of their other applicants--and ot every school makes their first cut based on GPA.

I've known applicant who had a 4.0 and did not receive interviews from some schools, GPA isn't everything. Maybe you were a solid applicant, but not compared to everyone else who applied.

Good luck with your other schools, if MIzzou wasn't life or death, then at least you'll have other options!

It's probably also offensive to those that did get invites to keep talking about solid applicants as if those invited were not.

I'm sure the attitude expressed is not only hurtful and disrespectful, but something that they may be able to consider for future applications.

Is there a count on approximately (or exactly) how many OOS applicants they had this year, and how that compares to other years? Kind of curious to know how much competition I was up against.

Personally, yes I feel offended. My stats aren't the best but high stats doesn't mean you'll be a great vet or get into vet school. The person matters as well. Not to be mean. I worked very hard and had a lot on my plate but I did the best I could. I am thankful to have received an interview offer. Don't let one rejection spoil your attitude, confidence or hope. You have yet to hear from other schools. Good luck.

They had 740 Nonresident application the committee decided to interview 280 for 60 spots in the class of 2020. That's a lot of applications to go through and I complete understand them not being able to do file reviews. I would just like to know what I need to improve for next cycle. I suppose as I wait to hear from my 5 schools that are left I will find out even though each school is different. Congrats to everyone who received an interview invitation I wish you all the best of luck!

I'm not sure until the statistics for 2020 class comes out, though I might hear/obtain the number during interviews. I would say there was around 800 or more, which was the number last year. Out of those they can only give interviews to 250 or so OOS, so you can see that some really good applicants could get rejected based on numbers alone.

This. So much this. I have so many diverse classmates from all over the US with experience and GPAs all over the board, and I would have been heartbroken if they based interviews solely on GPA, because it would have eliminated some of my classmates that I think are going to be great vets. There's a reason why GPA is only 40%, so don't let what anyone says get you down.

Thank you for your words. I am not one to be crushed by what others say. Things can be offensive towards me but never do I let them affect me. I have made it this far. I have been accepted to 2 vet schools already so I believe I have what it takes even with my average/low stats. Next step is to show Mizzou just that! 🙂

Do we need to mail fall transcripts to Missouri or just bring grades with us to the interview? I looked on their web page, but didn't see it anywhere.

Bring them to interview.

My original invite also said to mail them to VMCAS by Feb 1st!

I got an email from them last week reminding me bring them with my to my interview:

"If you were enrolled in any classes during summer 2015 and/or fall 2015 where grades were not verified through VMCAS, please bring a grade report to the interview. It does not have to be an official transcript at this time, but will need to include the most current grades available."

Oh, fantastic. I've already gone and ordered a transcript to be sent to the school directly because I thought that that was still what we're supposed to do. Ugh. I hope they'll let me cancel it. Otherwise I'm going to look like a big dummy. I knew I should have asked first...

Granted, I'm IS, so I'm not sure if it's different for us since we interview way later, but still.

Thanks for the info. Where did you find it ? I was searching the website and couldn't find it

Not a big deal at all. It's not actually brought into the interview room. It is dropped off at kathys office prior to the interview (at least if it's the same as last year) 🙂

This is a super relief. I don't know my grades for this semester yet, but I am predicting that it's gonna be a few points under my last few semesters. I was nervous I was gonna have to spend the 15 minutes explaining that instead of talking about other things.

Don't worry fall grades are required to figure out if IS interview so mail or email is perfectly okay! If you are concerned you can shoot a quick email to Kathy but IS are different than OOS so I wouldn't worry about it 🙂

Thank you! I wasn't able to cancel the transcript orders as they've already been processed, so this is a huge relief to me! I've had classmates apply to Mizzou in the past and they'd sent their fall transcripts directly to the school iirc, so when people were posting about sending them to VMCAS instead, I kinda freaked out a bit. 😱

Thankyouthankyouthankyou...

waitttttttt, we need to send them to VMCAS as well? Kathy told me VMCAS doesn't need our fall transcripts...

Hi! Ill be going for my interview Jan 3rd! How is everyone preparing for their interviews in general, looking up questions online and stuff?

Hey guys, question for everyone coming in from OOS--I'm flying into COU on Saturday for my interview Sunday, but it looks like none of the rental car companies at the airport are open on Saturdays (?). Is the best plan to taxi around? Is there uber in Columbia? Any travel advice around Columbia appreciated--thanks!

Any tips for the interview?? Mine's on January 2nd! Of course, my luck had it that I got sick so I am hoping that it'll clear up by then!

Anyone from/in MO want to chime in about the weather? I'm driving in on I-70, and I heard the flooding is awful and some parts of it are closed. I'm a little nervous to book my hotel... is Columbia itself okay?

I'm not currently in Columbia (I'm in the Joplin area, which is in the southwest corner of the state and got hit pretty hard by flooding) but from what I've heard, it's not too bad there. My bigger concern is... from which direction are you taking I-70? If you're coming from the east, you may run into issues as St. Louis and the surrounding areas are very, very flooded. If, by contrast, you're coming west through Kansas City, you should be fine -- my family up there has told me that there was some fairly significant ice/sleet/snow this week, but it's mostly gone now. That being said, I think I-70 has now reopened in both directions (don't quote me on this though); it's any side roads you may potentially take (food, gas, etc.) you'd want to worry about.

Here's a map of current road closures for reference and in case it is helpful: http://traveler.modot.org/map/

I'm coming from the east. 🙁 I won't be leaving until Friday, but flooding is one of those things that takes time even if it's not raining. My Waze app on the phone can't find any routes to Columbia as of yet... I figure that may be a bad sign!

Columbia is perfectly fine, we got hit with a ton of rain but luckily no flooding in town.. I know some back roads had some flooding but nothing you would be near for your interview.. On our FB page people said that getting to COMO from STL was not a problem just yesterday so I assume that is holding true today and will be true this weekend.. MoDot has a great road condition app that lets you know what roads are closed / affected by flooding / snow etc.. Might be worth downloading before you come!

Thank you both--will do! 😉

Edited to add--If any of you remember the Oregon Trail, I have a feeling that getting across the Mississippi is going to look a bit like that computer game... hahaha. Rations: meager. Pace? Grueling.

I-70 is showing up as completely clear on the MODOT map, so if you just take that road straight through, I think you'll be fine. For reference, Columbia is right around two hours from St. Louis. Again, at this point, I only think you will run into problems if you venture onto side roads in St. Louis and St. Charles counties (probably the most badly hit in the state) for food/gas/whatever. Otherwise, I wouldn't panic too much over it. 🙂

The Modot link in the comment above shows I-70 is open all the way across the state from STL to COMO and then th KC, I don't think you will have a problem getting here.

I just bought my plane ticket to fly into St Louis on Jan 8 for my interview that weekend... I'm going to do some research on the conditions over there and if it should be fine to travel to by then. I hope so because right now tickets to Kansas city instead of St Louis are a lot more expensive!! And actually.... The plane was completely full when I was booking so that might be a good sign.

I saw that it is going to snow that weekend in Columbia! My interview is the 10th!

I just did the drive two days ago, driving from ST. Louis to COMO is perfectly clear! Assuming nothing crazy happens in the next week or so....

Anyone know the status on IS applications/interview offers? I apparently need to prove I'm a resident because I did my undergrad outside of Missouri, still trying to get all of the paperwork they want.

Interviews won't go out until late late Jan if not early-mid Feb (the most likely time). ETA: If you meet all three requirements (I think it was 3.0 GPA, 285 on GRE, and 3 letters of rec with one vet), then you automatically get an interview.

As for the resident thing, call them! They are super understanding and can help you out (a phone call and the name of my high school was all I needed to fix everything, hopefully they can help you as well 🙂).

Wanted to wish everyone good luck with Interviews this year! A bit sad I won't be able to help with them, but always available to answer any questions you all may have about the school!

For those who interviewed today, how was it!?!?

Does anyone know how the tours are situated? Do we just turn up somewhere? Drove in from New Jersey... I wouldn't mind extra sleep! Haha

Tours end at 4pm, even if you have a later interview time. So plan to be there in time to tour and interview... There is also lunch and a student panel at Noon which is a huge highlight of the day. I would definitely be there for that as well... Tours can last anywhere from 1-2 hours.. Probably averaging around 1.5hrs. But it just depends on how many questions the students and parents have on the tour.

2 hours? I thought the email said 1.5 hours, so I planned on a 1:30 tour for a 3:15 interview...
