University of Toronto Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
just to get a better understanding,

for those who are applying for the 2nd, 3rd.. + time, could you (please) post your stats

gpa
pcat
interview

and a little blurb about why you think you didnt get in previous years

I know some ppl just missed it by a hair due to cut offs etc.

Thanks in advance

ok so i guess i'll get the ball rolling, my gpa was 3.8 (I made a mistake in the calc on the 2010 forum)
pcat composite was 83 (sciences were in 90s) 3/3 on writing
and i know I didn't get in because I totally screwed up my interview, i was just having a bad day 🙁 hopefully this year will be better luck :xf:

3.8? what is that as a pecentage, U of T calculates percentage right? how exactly did you calculate ur gpa?

and wow, the interview must have been worth a lot because your stats are great.

Hey guys

Interviews are worth probably 20-30%.
Some people with high stats got rejected because there is a cutoff for interviews (according to this year's rejection letter).
Just like people with high gpas dont get interviews due to cutoff in the PCAT.
So regardless of cGPA and PCAT, you need to get marks above the threshhold. Don't ask how much. No one knows.

Lesley (admission officer) said during the froshweek presentation that this year's class avg is above 80%.
She did not mention anything about PCAT and interview scores.

For 2010 UofT Pharmacy Admission cycle, there were close to 1000 applicants.

500 top PCAT ranking applicants went into MMI selection.

And 160 bottom MMI ranking applicants would be eliminated.

In the final selection 340 top MMI ranking applicants would be ranked by a combination of cGPA, PCAT and MMI.

And total of 240 top combination ranking would be admitted and bottom 100 applicants would be placed on wait-listed.
Combination formula could be:50%(cGPA) + 25%(PCAT) + 25%(MMI) = 100%

Source?

I'm not sure, someone on the 2010 forum put a link to this attachment where it tells you how to calculate it based on the different universities out there. I think it might have been form uoft's website.
and ya i think interview was worth alot, im guessing around 40-50% or so because there were people who were accepted with cgpa and pcat around low-mid 70s so im guessing they did really well on the interview. And they did mention in the rejection letter that there was a cutoff for the mmi's as well so if you didn't make it, they automatically reject you.

does U of T care whether or not the applicant has "pharmacy" related volunteering or work? I know that waterloo is very keen with that!!

stats:

first time applying to U of T
81% cgpa
74% pcat, 95%chemistry--1st time (meet 2010 pcat cutoffs)
have not received my results the second time i wrote the pcat
i have completed all my pre-reqs.

When you receive your interview next cycle (which im sure you will) how will you answer the questions differently than you did the first time?
what "approach" are you going to be using?

from UT pharm website:

Letters of Reference and Other Materials

Reference letters and other items such as award letters, etc., are not required and are not considered in our selection process. Please do not send these in support of the application.

but i guess if you have experience, it can help you form answers during MMI? wow your chem PCAT is good!!! i have 74% composite but chem is like 20% lower lol

Do you have any pharmacy related experience? or anyone on this thread?

I know someone with no extracurriculars who got in to U of T. So I do not think its required, just whats stated on the website

I dont have any 🙁
Im worried, some pharmacist tech told me that this year U of T may be looking at our "pharmacy experience". So i got worried and was wondering if any of you guys can confirm it.

i bet your cgpa is higher!! I hope pcat is not worth that much.

I think what i did wrong was go directly to the answer so I can have time for follow-up questions so i didn't really explain the thought process that was going on in my head so that is what im going to do, basically tell them what is going on in my head. Sounds kinda silly but I think they just want to know that you can reason your way through a situation.
Also, I don't have any pharm experience, I know UOFT has never required any references/volunteering, they looked at marks/pcat and last year the interview but now im scared too. how did the pharm tech guy know they need pharm experience? or was he just guessing? However, I do think if they needed any experience, they would've let us know beforehand like they did with the new preqs courses you now need. Because its not something you can do overnight just like the courses. Either way I'm just hoping for the best because if they need experience and references and all that stuff like waterloo for example, then I stand an even lesser chance of getting in :xf:🙁

If you had skimmed through the posts you would have noticed that a couple months ago i posted the following grade conversions:

A+ = 90
A = 85
A- = 81
B+ = 78
B = 75
B- = 71
etc

I didnt know the conversions myself so in October before I applied I emailed [email protected] and Heide emailed me the respective conversions.

If you are on the 4.0 scale then the conversion is as following:

4 = 90
3.9 = 85
3.7 = 81
etc etc

You have to convert every single one of your marks into their percentage mark since the average they calculate for you will be out of 100%. It is this average that is used to rank people.

Toronto has percent and letter grades.. so make sure you use only your percent grades to calculate your average.

The rest you can convert using the omsas gpa conversion scale for your respective school and then apply the percent conversion.

http://www.ouac.on.ca/omsas/pdf/c_omsas_b.pdf

I hope this helped.

SDNERS cGPA PCAT MMI

With n = 14

cGPA mean = 80.9
PCAT mean = 85
MMI = moderate = 8 out of 10 stations ok

It indicated that SDNer who got the 3 mean marks will get the admission:luck:

Thanks to everyone who took part in the pilot study project🙂
Good luck to everyone:xf:

Thankyou!! How are you liking pharmacy school at U of T? Is it tough? Do you still have time to go hang out with friends or have they drowned you with school?

It would be nice if someone can add another additional column with who got accepted and who got rejected. That way this application cycle will have a good idea of where we stand.

i understand what you mean but isn't that just a bit insensitive? it's also a bit insensitive of chemreactionxxx to say

"cGPA mean = 80.9
PCAT mean = 85
MMI = moderate = 8 out of 10 stations ok

It indicated that SDNer who got the 3 mean marks will get the admission"

there are ppl that got low cgpa, low pcat, but great MMI and got in too.

I was wondering if anyone has received their PCAT scores yet!!! I know they're available online, but when should we expect them by mail???

p.s. best wishes for all those waiting for their PCAT scores 😀

Hey guys!
I have been an active reader of this forum and decided to finally join!
SO i just wanted to say HI

I'm a third year student at UofT and am going to apply to pharmacy starting next year. Was wondering if there are any other peeps out there who (like me) are planning to get a BScPhm AFTER getting their BSc.

🙂

Welcome to SDN 🙂

From what I've heard from my friend who's in pharmacy this year, the majority of people admitted this year had a degree already, so it's very common. BUT, I just don't know what the advantage of getting a BSc would be before getting into pharmacy??? Is there a particular reason for doing that?

I can see how chemreactionxxx's analysis might not be very accurate, but nonetheless we should be very thankful to him for taking the initiative for collecting all the data and putting things into perspective 👍 👍 👍
In my opinion though, I don't think that we should rely that heavily on those three averages. For one thing, there are 241 students in this year's class and only 14 of them had posted their stats... also, people with lower stats tend NOT to post their stats here on SDN, so those averages could be a bit skewed.

I guess all of us should strive for the best, so there would be no regrets in the future.

Im still waiting for my pcat scores!! I think they should be here by friday, if not then by monday!!

Wow, your a master student??You will get in for sure then!!

Time will prove.

ChemReactionXXX, you did not meet all three "mean marks" but you still got accepted!! So we dont "HAVE" to possess all three mean marks. i think if you have 80+ cgpa and do really well on the interview you can still get accepted!!

I think important factors that determine acceptance are cgpa and the interview. I dont think pcat is "that" important. I think 70+ should be fine given you have 80+ cgpa and do well on the interview.

just my speculation.

Um, no I'm just doing my second year of undergrad... 😉

BMSc stands for "Bachelor of Medical Sciences"

I'm applying this year..a second year student. My average is around 75% GPA. I don't think that's good and I hope I do get a good pcat score. Of course, I know the interview would be incredibly important. A simple question like, 'What would you do if a classmate cheated?' has actually a long answer. Sigh.

CASE STUDY 1 - Pharmaniac.

Just to give u guys some hope- I got a call this Tuesday! I was from the Upper WL! See u guys at Phrosh! GPA: 76PCAT: 90 with 95 in chemistryInterview: No regrets for 8/10 MMI stations -Posted by Pharmaniac.

Clearly Pharmaniac got in because of his high Pcat so I still do think that Pcat still playing a important role in admission process.🙂

I happen to know the subject of this case study 😛

I'm 100% sure that the mentioned person absolutely killed the interview... so I'm sure that the interview is still the main criteria... and who knows maybe they still consider PCAT scores after interviews, maybe they don't... we'll never know.

You guys should have your white coat ceremony today, so stop worrying about PCATs, interviews, etc etc and enjoy this day 🙂

Thanks

I was thinking about asking this too. I personally don't mind sharing my stats as long as everyone else do the same. 😛

So should all of us SDNers just make all our stats clear from now, so we'll have an idea of where we stand? Or would you guys prefer to reveal them after the acceptances are sent out?

Should we have a vote on this? Yay or nay?

have you taken the pcat before? i'm taking the oct one :S

No. I'm taking the Jan. 22 one and it's my first time. x.x Hopefully I at least make it to the interview...which I will probably bomb out. LOL.

lol Good ol' Pharmaniac eh? 😉

No I think what really got me in was praying very hard LOL (or interview or pcat)

Case study 2 : Rano (gpa = 76, Pcat = 76)

hey guys...my interview is on may 15...
m so not sure how do i prepare for it :scared:
how r u guys preparing???
Hi guys
I'm a second year undergrad
my cGPA is around 2.8 till now but considering just the pre-reqs, it's well above 3.25. Also, my pcat scores were:
VA 24
RC 50
Bio 95
Chem 88
Quan 79
composite 76

Essays 3/2.8

With those marks, should I even hope for admission?? 😕
Posted by Rano.:barf:

In the end Rano couldn't make it for admission because of his Pcat (76) therefore I think the role of Pcat is still important even after MMI.
And I wish Rano could rise his Pcat up to 90 and get in like Pharmaniac.:xf:

your argument would be "very" convincing if his cgpa was 3.7+ but his cgpa is 2.8!!

guys i don't think the people used in these case studies who didn't get in would appreciate this. I mean they tried their best to get in and its not very nice to try and figure out why they were rejected! And besides, marks clearly aren't everything, that's the reason they decided to add the interview component. That being said, since its a competitive program, these people were probably just at a disadvantage when the final ranking were being done since their marks might have been lower than the other candidates. I think we should all just focus on doing our best and forget about evaluating those who didn't make it to class of 2014.

Anyone get there pcat scores mailed in yet?
When will the application become available online?
This is ridiculous!!

If you guys have visited the U of T pharmacy website recently, you will realize that they changed the date for the online application from September to October.

"Updates to the remaining sections will be made in October. Please check our website again in October for final details of the 2011 admission cycle. The online application will also become available in October. "

What does it mean by "final details of 2011"? Is there anything else that they are going to add that is new to this cycle? I hope not!!

well, they could be changing the title to a PharmD specially considering that they have already said that next year they'll be implanting the new curriculum.

also, they could add an extracurricular component to the application (sorta like waterloo)....

yay to the possibility of changing the title to PharmD, but it really doesn't matter.. i'd still apply.

nay to adding extracurricular lol omg i am reluctant to apply to waterloo cuz i don't have a crazy load of extracurriculars or LORs but if UT adds that... fml.

Its such a mystery as to what "changes" will be made and I also find it slightly cruel of U of T to make us all wait.🙄

We all have a long wait ahead of us!

Anyone doing the Oct. Pcat?

I know for a fact that PCAT scores for Aug have arrived today! So I hope all you guys who did the Aug PCAT (I did it too) got all the scores you were hoping for 😀👍
