UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT--WAITING LIST

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hmm... not sure I follow on this part:

"If they offer ~152 acceptances, then 58 of them were taken off the waitlist (152-94=58)."

Here's my logic (using MSAR 02/03 and USNews 99/00 data)-

They said that 90% of out of sate matriculants came off the waitlist. Since there are 64 out of state matriculants, 58 of them came off the waitlist (so we know at least 6 out of staters were given offers without being waitlisted...). But these are matriculants; that doesn't mean that more offers weren't given to waitlisters, because some wait list offers will be declined.

So all it means that *at least* 58 were taken off the waitlist, but there were no doubt many more offers given to waitlisters (that were declined). But I don't think we can figure out how many total offers were given to waitlisters because we're missing data. We don't know how many of the accepted 140 out of staters and 40 in staters were offered admission without being waitlisted first.

Who ever said doctors don't need to know math. ;-)

Dr.s do need to know math. This whole probability thing was weighing on my mind too. From what I gathered on the Princeton Review book, in the 2000 to 2001 (i think) UVM accepted about 2x as many students to fill their seats. That means that year, they dipped into their waitlist pool pretty deep to accomplish this. Of course, throughout the course of the last several months, I am sure they have been continually dipping in thhis pool on a rolling basis. Truly, who knows how many absolute numbers of acceptances they have offered already.

I am also on the top 3rd. I was told that the chances are very good. Who knows...You all make very good points. Hopefully I'll see you next year.

Just speculation. We could be wrong or right. Probably won't find out until early June. Best of luck to you all.

I am wondering if anyone or any of you are thinking of calling on May 15th? Will they have any substantive info. for us at that time? Or should we wait a few days or so--give them a chance to gather everything (hopefully for our sake gathering withdrawals)?

I'll keep you all posted on what I hear from then when I do call. Best of luck!

waiting4uvm:
I think it would be better to give them a couple of days after. I would rather wait until friday when they get their stuff together and can give me better answers. besides, they are still probably trying to compile all our data and figure out how many spots are still available.

dynamic02:
I still feel young. I'll be turning 23 in August right before/during the orientation weeks for most med schools! I get the impression that UVM and its community are oriented towards older med students (like later 20's and beyond). But that's a judgement I have made after only 2 days of being there, so I guess it is not that sound. However, my tour guides, two of whom came straight from undergrad, seemed to like it a lot. So who knows? What part of the U.S. are you coming from? I am interested in learning about people's opinions of UVM.

Okay, i just thought I'd share that I went 50 hours without sleep.
let's hope I never do that again!

Anyway, good luck to us all! I am still in the throws of waiting lists at all my schools, so I have no idea where I'll end up right now.

labrynth79 I sent you a PM

I've been accepted at UVM and I took 1 year off after undergrad. I finished undergrad in 5 years, so I'm 23. Hopefully I'll get in a couple of ski days each year.

Hey guys! =-)

So I think I have reached a decision... (drum roll, please...)...

I am attending UVM next fall!! =-) woohoo! 🙂 I'm really excited and can't wait!

Labrynth-- yes, many of the students who go to UVM are "older" however I look at it in a couple of different ways-- 1)we, "young people", have a lot to learn... also, i was hanging out with this girl who is a 4th year at UVM and is headed to boston for her residency (actually she told me a lot of folks from her class are headed to boston... they matched really well this year). Anyway, she went to UVM right after undergrad and she said she has loved it and everyone is really great and supportive. 🙂

and 2) I think it's an honor to be part of a med school with people who are "older"... maybe we ("young people") are mature or something like that.... 🙂

for the rest of you folks... hang in there, good luck and keep us updated!

altaskier,
Did you decide to attend UVM over MCW? Are you still waiting on your first choice?

So has anyone called yet? I think I'm going to call either on Friday or Monday, just to get an update on their waitlist status. I'm guessing that they won't know for another week or two as they process all the withdrawal letters (hopefully a lot of them! )

Okay I just called, I couldn't take the suspense! LOL

So she said that there hasn't been much movement yet because the withdrawal letters only need to be postmarked by May 15th... so she said to give them two weeks since they need to process all the letters and would know more about the waitlist at that time.

So... nothing we didn't already guess, but at least we know we shouldn't expect anything soon and can just relax for another two weeks... 🙄

labrynth79--hey thanks for your response--too bad I read it after I had left them a message this morning--pacific time. Oh well--hope they won't be annoyed.

Jedi4--thanks for the 411 on your call. If I hear of anything, I'll be sure to let you all know as well.

And congrats to the two that decided to go to UVM. I am wondering, were you guys accepted outright, or did you come in off the waitlist. I am new to this thread--thanks

hey people,

just to answer your question, waiting4uvm-- i was accepted outright... just had to do a lot of thinking about it and deciding....and i'm really psyched and just grateful!

but don't worry-- I'm sure you and the rest of the folks on the waiting list will get in! =-) I heard that there will probably be a lot of movement (esp. in the top third).

let's hear the scoop once you guys find out!
good luck!

Can anyone tell me what BUMP stands for (if anything)? I am kinda new to this... thanks.

I ended up choosing UVM over MCW. Still waiting for more schools.

It "bumps" the thread to the top of page 1 so it gets more attention. 🙂

Yes it did.....all other schools that I was unsure of, I dropped. But it came down to these two schools. I think I liked the atmosphere at UVM better. Not to mention its close proximity to skiing.

altaskier - maybe I missed it, but are you definitely going to UVM?

I've also read that bump means 'bring up my post'.

kutastha, I sent you a PM.

Dynamic02, did you say that you went to the second look day at UVM?

Looks like i will probably be classmates with kutastha, altaskier, and Dynamic02....and hopefully many more of you. I dropped my other acceptances prior to may 15, and decided to keep uvm. I am 95% sure i will be there.....now on some waiting lists so time will tell....don't know what the likelyhood of being accepted off the waiting list....hence the other 5%.

In response to a question i read earlier pertaining to ages of people deciding on uvm--- I graduated may 2001, and worked in a lab for the year. I will turn 23 a few weeks into the upcoming school year.

Hey!

yeah, i went to the uvm closer look day. it was really great and i got a better impression of the school... if you want more info, i wrote about it in a thread not too long ago... (late april/early may) (hopefully you can find it without the search engine...)

🙂

kutastha, leafs, and Dynamic02....have any one of you started looking for housing or know the deal with housing at UVM?

Hey altaskier,

You can email Eve Greene ([email protected]) and she will send you a housing list by email.
Hope that helps! 🙂

i have not started looking....i don't think there is anything available through the school...unless you are married. Please correct me if i am wrong. I do not know when to start looking as i am on some waitlists.

Dynamic02 I was also at the second look day and I think I sat next to you during one of the microbiology lectures. I was the vermonter with curly hair.

Okay, I got the list. Thanks for all your help. I guess know I gotta start looking through it eventually. Has anyone of you found housing already?

Hey all you waitlisters, I spoke with Mary from admissions today and she said THERE IS MOVEMENT. We should expect to be hearing from them within the next three weeks. Good luck everyone.

I just wanna reiterate that EVERYONE in tier 1 will most likely get in. Moreover, the top of tier 2 will also most likely get in. Just keep in mind that last year they even dipped into the third tier. So no worries people 😀 I hope they tell you soon.

so are you actually going? have you found housing yet?

🙂

DOES ANYBODY ELSE HAVE SENIORITIS LIKE I DO???? (Hmmmm...maybe I should start a thread.... 😀 )

Hey All,

Thanks for your responses and comfort over the past few weeks. I have received my acceptance notice from UVM to get in off the waitlist this past weekend. I will be accepting this offer and look forward to meeting some of you then. All the best to all of you for your help.

Now, I got to look for a place to live, speed up my exit at work, etc...

I'll post that info on the waitlist movement thread. Now ur screen name is funny. 😀

Dear Dynamic02, I have already found a condo, but I live here and so that wasn't really hard. If you have any questions about burlington or anything you can email me at [email protected]. And that goes for anyone else who is going to UVM too.

congrats waiting4uvm!!!!!!

Four schools put me "ON HOLD" for an interview this year then rejected me saying they ran out of room. The ones that did send an invitation currently have me on their waitlist. I'm one of those non-traditional applicants who worked, went to grad school, etc., so I really hope it works out with Vermont (plus I don't want to go through this hell again!)

Did anyone else experience this unusual "hold for interview" category or was it just me? My application wasn't complete until late in the game, which is how I explain it (long story). The way in which events unfolded were beyond my control though otherwise I'd be on some serious anti-depressant medication by now recovering from guilt and grief, hehe.
By the way, congratulations on your acceptance waiting4uvm! 🙂 Way to go!!!  Since a lot of us are still waiting to hear from them could you tell us if they notified you via email, regular US mail, or by phone? Also, I sent you a PM over a week ago. Please check it if you can. Thanks!

A lot of people received pre-interview holds. It's the closest thing to a rejection--they put you on hold because they are not sure they wanna reject you. I had 2 of them. It is not a hint that they will invite you to interview, but the opposite.

And don't worry, tier 1 is IN!

Ouch. I guess I'd rather be rejected right off the bat rather than having to wait TEN MILLION, FOUR HUNDRED FIFTY SIX THOUSAND, THREE HUNDRED SIXTY TWO YEARS!!!

(true gravity of frustration edited in)

Operadoc....I know this is a little bit general, but what tips do you have about housing in Burlington?

Thanks Much

While I'm at it, let me trouble you with one more question Operadoc...

How is the skiing in VT? What resorts are close? Do you often get to go? Do you have any medical school buddies at UVM right now? Do they seem to find the time to go?

Thanks

Hello everyone. I'm in the middle-3d on the waiting list. Is anybody else in the same boat as I am? Honestly, what are our chances of getting in??

Lionel

Lionel•••••Last year the first and second tier all got in, as well as a portion of the third tier. You have a good chance, and if they say they expect a lot of movement, they do!

Good luck 😀

Oops, sorry, all these screen names I forgot who had asked the question...I did not recieve a PM a few weeks ago, they are setting up my acct perhaps I did not get it. But to answer your question--I got a regualr sized envelope, and one paper that was the acceptance letter. They did not call or email. I was to respond w/in a week.

I hope that helps. I wish you well. I am also a non-trad. student, 26, went to grad school, worked for two years. I feel your pain and hope for you the best--hang in there!

and thanks all. I might be going to Burlington soon to check out living arrangements--wondering if any of you had any suggestions...

Hi everyone,

Could we just summarize who is in and going, and who was in the first tier? Did you all get acceptances?
It really sounds like alot of people are going from the first tier. I'm clinging to the hope that they work their way into the second tier.

Thanks

Altaskier, where you live depends on what kind of environment you want to live in. It is easy to get anywhere if you have a car. If you don't have a car your choices are more limited. You can also choose to live in Burlington or move out to the more rural suburbs 5-20 minutes outside of the city. Skiing is 30 minutes to bolton (its not the greatest here) and 45 minutes to stowe (good place). I have a few buddies in the med school and they definately make time for skiing and other sports. Vermont definately seems to be a place where people work hard and play hard and so it is a good mix. If you have more specific questions about areas to live in just email me and I will do what I can to help. Maybe I can steer you clear from the less desirable areas.

Hey Dr. Foxy,

I take it you are heading to UF Med--the Gators.

I used to live in Gainesville--if you have any questions about the city, let me know--

Best of luck
