University of Wisconsin c/o 2018 applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am kind of assuming if I didn't receive a phone call today then I am wait listed/rejected?

I think calls went up until the Friday of the second full week of February last year. So there's still hope for more OOSers!

ACCEPTED!! OOS, and they called at 6:40p EST. I'm so happy, I don't even know what to do with myself! I literally jumped up in the air, danced, laughed, and cried as soon as I hung up the phone. My first acceptance anywhere 😀

Congrats to another potential future Badger and classmate!!!

Heyyyy. So even though it's my instate, Wisconsin is the one school I haven't read up on/heard much about. Could anyone here tell me why you chose to apply there (other than tuition)? Or if you already go to Wisconsin, what you love about it?

Thank you!! I'm still waiting to hear back from UF (my IS) and NCSU, but I will definitely be going to the UW open house on March 7th. No idea which I'll choose if I get accepted to the other schools, but I'm just relieved to finally be in!

I applied because of OOS tuition, reputation, NAVLE passing rates, and Aaron Rodgers (my family owns stock in the Packers so it was kind of obligatory lol).

Your comment just made my day. I'm sure you can't tell at all by my picture or screen name that I'm also a huge Aaron Rodgers/Packer fan.

For me personally, affordability of OOS tuition was one of the bigger selling points of Wisconsin. From information I found about the program, Wisconsin's vet school has very reputable alumni, which really helps in job placement for graduating students. Wisconsin's small class size enables students to form close-knit relationships with each other, as well as clinicians, which again is a huge plus (since they're gonna be your future colleagues). The school also seems to offer a wide variety of opportunities in pretty much every discipline of veterinary medicine - small, exotic/zoo, large (especially dairy, since Wisconsin is "America's Dairyland"), research, etc. I don't know too much about Wisconsin's equine program though (if that happens to be one of your interests), but since small and exotic animal medicine are my primary interests, that's what drew my attention. In terms of the curriculum, I think it features problem-based learning, but clinical experience is still accessible for those seeking it. And Wisconsin students have one of the highest NAVLE pass rates in the nation, which is another huge plus (I think the school is among the top five in the nation). The administration also seems to really cater to student needs and is really intentional about seeing students succeed. Finally, I've heard that Wisconsin really prides itself on teamwork between veterinary medicine and other fields (i.e. public health, human medicine, etc.), which kinda explains why its professional school programs are located near each other. Also on a personal note, having gone to college in a fairly small town, I wanted to go to vet school in a more urban location that wasn't too overwhelming to live and work in. Madison seems like an excellent place for twenty-somethings.

I don't claim to be an expert by any means, but hope that helps answer your question!

Thank you! This was a really thorough explanation of Madison's perks. Thank you so much. 🙂

On the equine thing, I am also small animal/exotics focused, but mainly because that is where my experience has been. I actually am very interested in learning a lot more about equine since I've never had much experience in it, but it's always seemed very interesting to me, especially touring other schools' equine centers.

I know what you mean. It's definitely good to be well-rounded in veterinary medicine cause they always say your interests will change over the course of your four years. I haven't gotten much equine experience either, but I'm curious to see how much I'll learn!

I mostly chose Wisconsin because of the OOS tuition and the general feeling I got during invited students day/open house. I went to undergrad at CSU but grew up in Indiana so I wanted to go back home to the midwest, too, without having to be in Indiana. All of my classmates and members of other classes are really helpful, kind, and we all have each other's backs. I have never had a feeling of competitiveness that I know some other schools harbor reputations for. Nearly every professor knows my name and my anatomy professors in particular were absolutely fabulous with meeting outside of class time and going over things with you and helping you with anything. We do a good amount of clinical-based work but classes are mainly lecture and laboratory-based (which I actually like). I can't say enough good things about my professors and faculty, our veterinary teaching hospital and clinicians, and fellow classmates. We also have great clubs (and they all hold lunch meetings which means free food!!!) ranging anywhere from laboratory animal medicine to exotics to small ruminants. Madison is a little more expensive to live in than I was previously used to coming from smaller towns, but it's manageable. If you have any more specific questions feel free to PM me 🙂.

I also have heard they have some really neat programs in things such as spinal manipulation and a few other complementary techniques.

I'm so excited to be a Badger this fall! Wisconsin has been my first choice from the beginning, but I honestly didn't think I had a chance. I'm so happy my doubts were proven wrong :soexcited:

Congrats! So exciting...do you mind posting your stats? Still hoping for good news here!

I'll post on the "Successful Applicant Stats c/o 2018" thread as soon as I can!

Yes, anyone who was accepted, I would greatly appreciate stats/extracurricular info if you are willing. Keeps my hopes alive, just a little bit? Lol

I am literally camping out on this page, in case anyone else posts that they've gotten a call!

The app gives me notifications on my phone every time someone adds to one of my subscribed threads. I so look forward to not having to be a crazy vet school applicant! (I just wanna be a crazy vet school student).

Agreed! Wish they'd just let us know already. Can't stand the wait anymore. It's literally making me sick to my stomach.

The amount of anxiety I have waiting for their response is insane. Should we all do a pool as to when the first notice arrives via mail?
I'm calling next week Thursday (at least that's what I've determined by stalking previous threads 😉)

I don't know what I'm going to do with my time once everyone knows though. No more obsessing over things anymore with crazy notifications from SDN. 🙁

I'm sure we'll find something ;-) haha

You'll more than likely find me obsessing on the waitlisted thread

does anyone else find it slightly cruel that they call some people but leave everyone else hanging for another week or more? haha I so wish they'd just tell EVERYONE at once.... it's agonizing!
It IS agonizing. The wait is terrible, I just want to know. I just want an answer so I can plan..

Everything (for this cycle at least) is now riding on Wisconsin. Here's to hoping it's good news!

So, I'm guessing no news from Wisconsin today? I was really hoping for some action today!

Me, too...but I'm guessing not. Really hoping that we all hear good tomorrow. Wish we could figure out why they call some OOS acceptances and then others get packets in the mail. Wonder if they even have a special order that they call by? Can't figure it out.

I'm waiting to hear from both MSU and Wisconsin. I can't plan anything until I hear! It's cruel! I'm going crazy.

So no one has heard anything in over a day? So weird. What's the method to their madness???

Their method is to torture us and see how well we handle stress! You don't know it, but you're being watched... 😉

I'd say it's very possible more calls have been made but none of those people happen to be SDNers. I mean, if there are 1000 applicants per year, I'm sure only a very small percentage of those are actually on here haha. But I'm so anxious to hear too! I just want to put myself out of this misery haha

My friend who goes to vet school at UW said she had some classes cancelled yesterday and today, because the admissions committee is meeting to finish up the decisions... Hopefully letters next week?

When I got my call on Tuesday, I think the admissions person told me we should get letters next week sometime. Also, they are super nice! Probably one of the friendliest phone calls I've ever gotten
