UPenn decisions

Has anyone checked past websites for admissions come the day of March 26 or more like mid week? And will we all find out at once?

I believe they post all the decisions at once.

Its come to the point here where UPenn is the place holding up my final decision...I wish the decisions would have come out this week!

Okay, gut feeling: do you think you'll get in?

I had I dream about it so now I think I will. It was such a vivid dream that for the rest of that day, I seriously acted like I had gotten in! I know, that's dangerous bc Penn is ridiculously competetive blah blah, but I feel it in my bones!

And yes, all my hopes and dreams will be dashed to pieces if I don't but eh, that was going to happen anywaus. For now, I'm pretending I'm THERE, baby.

No. I'm a pessimist though. I didn't really count on a whole lot this application season. I like to plan on the worst, hope for the best, ad if it does come true, then be pleasantly surprised...

I remember I was depressed for a week after the interview, because I realized the school I was most in love with was also the hardest one to get into, and it doesn't help that the interview didn't seem to go the greatest...

I don't plan on getting in. My Harvard rejection eliminated any "good interview leads to aceeptance" correlation in my mind. I rocked out that HMS interview just as hard as I rocked out the Penn one (combined they were my best, hands down)...and it led to nothing, nothing I say. Ah well. I must count my blessings in the acceptances I do have.

Oh man! you got the good message but no acceptance? damn, that's harsh. I got the bad message and rejected, so very unsurprising. I also bombed that interview so very very unsurprising. Penn went well tho, so I'm crossing fingers for both of us!

No no, I also got the bad message and am assuming it means rejection. I'm on spring break so I can't get my mail.

Fingers crossed for you as well. Penn rocks my world...nowhere else did I get to hold a lung with pulmonary embolism while wearing a suit...

 That about sums up my philosophy on life.

I'm about 98% sure I will not be getting in. And I don't think I'm going to be on WL tier 1 either. The MD/PhD director sent an email to a select few applicants saying he hoped they enjoyed it here/asking about their interest level, etc., and needless to say, I did not receive this email. Eh... it's okay. While I love Penn long time, I've been tired of Philly for awhile now. It's time to move on to new food carts!! 😉

:luck: :luck: Everyone.

And Humble, if they don't show you the love you deserve (which they totally are... I'm calling it now), I'm going to destroy something on campus or pee on Ben Franklin's foot or something. It's gonna go down...

I'm really expecting a waitlist, which would be disappointing since it has been my top choice since the interview. I'm hoping for a "top of tier 1," but I'm thinking that's a little too much of a stretch as well.

sigh. here we go again. the days just keep creeping.

Me too. And my lease is ending soon (well, in ~2 months), so I really do not have time to hang out on waitlists for ages... Obviously an acceptance would be amazing, but if not, some part of me is almost hoping for tier 2, just so the decision will be clear and I can just move on. (Of course you understand I will be crushed if I actually get tier 2, and will deny ever saying this...)

If you do get in, will your sig go to "University of Pennsylvania class of 201x" even though you already said you wouldn't come in protest of them changing their acceptance date? I thought you were dead set on Pitt before? I mean I know you were posting in their class thread and you had "University of Pittsburgh" in your sig 😕

Nope... won't do that. I'll PM ya.

Also, I never put Pitt c/o 2011 in my sig... it was Hobo Medical School c/o 2011, which linked to my mdapps site. Once I made my final decision, I changed my sig to something more lasting. I don't like listing my options in my sig... only the school I finally decided on.

page 2? what? I'm demanding from all fellow waiters that they do their part to keep this rolling like the Duke thread. we should be at least as awesome!

also, yomomma, I had a dream about getting into Penn too! Mine was also very vivid.. in it, I cried from happiness and then my family cried too! But it wasn't quite as lame as it sounds. It was a dream!

Anyways, I can't believe I'm here waiting for my last decision. It's KILLING me cause it's the school I love the most.

Does anyone know when Penn tells accepted students about the Gamble scholarships?

I don't know what a gamble scholarship is but I feel like if I got one, I would just die. Not even in a healthy way, really, I might just go into cardiac arrest.

but my vision didn't mention that so I'm safe! n o o worries! I'm goooood.

(but gluck to you! :luck: )

I know I'm not gonna get that scholarship...I'm just praying for a UPenn acceptance. I haven't had good med school news in a very long time.

We should start a pool for what day UPenn will release their decisions...

I'll take Tuesday 3/27 (I guess I'm a pessimist who's trying to be optimistic... 😕 )

Does anyone know when Penn's second look is?

Dibs on wednesday. Hump day is always a good day.

I pick next Wednesday (anyone else check the status page today out of ;lakdjfla;kjd?😕 )

GOD DAMN IT IF I HAVE TO KEEP BUMPING THIS THREAD SINGLEHANDEDLY I WILL DO SO!

I'm gonna be a super-optimist and vote the 26th. I mean, they HAVE to know by then, right?

Actually, I know a couple of fourth years who were notified on the first day of orientation and just got their tuition reimbursed (*surprise!*) ... it may have changed since then, though

That seems strange (not that I am doubting you). I would have thought they use the scholarships as an incentive. Giving them during orientation seems to defeat the purpose. Maybe someone who had one turned it down a the last second (got off a waitlist, etc.)

In any case, at least 2 people last year were notified via status page on acceptance day.

Thanks for the insider info though MJ. 🙂

I had it first. Snowball versus big metal spatula? It's a duel to the death. I bet I win when you get curious about whether or not your tongue will REALLY stick to that icy cold spatula.

Global warming. I win.

*burp*

And yes, I meant burp... not bump.

Good Luck Penn Hopefuls!!

Now I see that some of you have been discussing things like financial aid and scholarships and so on, but that's not important. What *is* important is how you're gonna eat in Philly. So, let's break this down:

Sev's Ultimate Guide to Food Truck Dining:

Veeeeeeerrrry Nice:

King's Wok: Awesomely awesome Chinese food (for a food truck). Always take a friend of the Asian persuasion along with you though because -- and this has been hotly debated -- I don't think he likes whities. Fairly priced.

Hemo's: Two words... special sauce. I don't know what Hemo does to it, and honestly, I don't really care because this stuff is the shiz. The Grilled Chicken with Spinach and Tomatoes is pretty awesome and it will only set you back like $3.50 for the large.

Casablanca (the one at the front of the hospital): Pretty good. If you're feeling like falafel, this is your best bet. A bit more pricey than I'd prefer, but... eh.

KoJa: Expensive, but you get a ton of food. If you're looking for hot spicy Korean/Japanese action, this is your best bet.

Yuki's: Actually I lied about King's Wok being the bestest of the best for Chinese FT cuisine. Yuki takes this prize. Just call ahead because it's always busy. Pretty cheap, but kind of out of the way.

Bento Box: Somewhat expensive, but if you're craving Chicken Katsu this is about as good as it's going to get if you're in a rush.

MexiCali: Awesome. Best Mexican food truck around.. no comparison. MexiCali is the Roger Federer of the Food Truck world. We're talking total domination here, folks. They're awesome (mmmm... sweet potato burrito), they're cheap, and they're close by. Beware of the lines though.

You know how you can be overwhelmed and underwhelmed, but never just "whelmed"? Well, I think that's stupid because "whelmed" perfectly describes my general attitude towards these trucks:

CrepeWalk: Eh... not bad... not great. The southwest chicken crepe is pretty good, but if you're looking for crepes, Houston is your best bet. Kind of expensive too.

LeAhn: I like the woman who mans the cart -- she's really nice -- but just be prepared to drink copious amounts of water after your meal. Thiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrsty.

Most of the fruit carts: Fruit is fruit. Some give you more for your money than others. The carts at the front of the hospital are cheaper (by 50 cents!) than those on the side.

The Rest:

Magic Carpet: Some people rave about it... I don't get that. Why on Earth would I pay $6.00 for some rice and grilled peppers? WHY? This vegetarian cart is popular with a lot of people -- and you may like it -- but it's too "fru fru" for me.

The Real LeAhn: Beware... there are two women proclaiming to be LeAhn here. (there's a story behind it, but I've neither the time nor inclination to discuss it here). This one is nasty. I don't think it's the cleanest either. My juice was moldy.

Casablanca (on the side of the hospital): Used to be run by the people who man the truck at the front. These people don't do it justice. Yuck... expensive too.

Sub Guy truck (this cart has no name, so I just made one up): The subs aren't bad -- in fact they're pretty good -- and it's kind of cheap. It just grosses me out that he wears gloves to prepare the sandwich (yeah!) but also conducts all money transactions while wearing the gloves (no!!)... kind of defeats the purpose, eh?

The Curry Cart: NO NO NO NO NO NO NO! Nyet, Nein, Nem! This is not awesome. It's far away, it's expensive, and this is quite possibly the worst curry experience I've ever had.

HTH... :luck: Everyone. Be sure to make the trucks part of your second look experience!

There are more to be had... this is just the more notable ones.

**Edit: So I looked it up and apparently "whelmed" is a word... it means 1.) to submerge under water or 2.) To overwhelm. That said, I still stand by my usage of "whelmed". If Colbert can invent "truthiness", I can invent an alternative definition.

Yum! Thanks Sev!!!! Hopefully I will have an opportunity to sample it:luck:

My truck review. A few on your review:

IMO, Rami's (40th and Locust) is wayyyy better than Casablanca, cheaper too. There's another Mexicali truck on 38th and Walnut that's never as crowded. The restaurant (40th and Sansom) is good and cheap.

Agreed about Magic Carpet. They pack a huge line at both their trucks every day... Why?! The food is bland as hell and expensive. You don't have to go to a vegetarian cart to get vegetarian food. I just chalk it up to vegetarians having eaten bland food so long they don't recognize when the food is bland...

http://www.ling.upenn.edu/clubling/2003/trucks.html -- This site is increasingly out of date, but it's what I used for awhile to try new carts. Greek Lady no longer owns that cart, but I never understood what was so great about it to begin with...

Really? That sucks. Because I use whelmed all the time. In the same way you just used it. I stand with you Sev.

finally some action in the Penn thread!

so.. what's the scoop on sushi in philly/penn area?

Sweet Jesus, I just had a horrific vision of how to make the MCAT even more evil, by adding an eccentric vocab element. E.g. a physics problem talking about whelming an object...and not only do you need to know the proper fluids equations, but figure out that it's a fluids problem in the first place....

Also, how the heck can "to whelm" = "to overwhelm". Isn't that a little....contradictory? Then again, I also refuse to accept that inflammable = flammable. There goes another MCAT question down the drain....(although come to think of it, I think that *was* the key to a question on one of the practice exams I took....)

ok you "whelm" debaters -- I'll be the first to confess that this whole discussion made me instantly think of the movie "10 things I hate about you," which I have seen way too much. Who's with me?

I think you can be whelmed in Europe.

Rami's is so amazing. It was the perfect end to the perfect interview day (in terms of the school, not my performance haha)

yomama i triple dare you to start the UPenn Class of 2011 thread.

TRIPLE DARE.

OMG I JUST CHECKED THE STATUS PAGE!!!

No, I didn't. But now I bet you will 😛

yomama i triple dare you to start the UPenn Class of 2011 thread.

TRIPLE DARE.

Why doesn't Yup start one (the guy that got admitted early)? He can post to himself for a few days!

Cause it's not CRAZY BAD MOJO for Yup to start it.
Zipper are you considering penn after your harvard accept?

Definitely! If anything, I currently prefer Penn. I fell in love with Penn on interview day. The curriculum is much better in my opinion and the students seemed unbelievably happy (to a freakish extent) with everything about the school. I think there's also something to be said for the unbelievable collegiality that the Penn faculty have with their students. At what other school do you have professors who go out to the movies with their students? Perhaps it's my bias as a Yalie, but I see nothing straightforward about the choice of Harvard versus Penn. If I get into Penn (god willing), I would definitely need to go back to both second look weekends and decide then.

HAHA. I'm so drunk right now (dracunkuliasis a pre-med might say). so I will take that dare!!! god, I know, this is possibly the worst mojo ever and you don't even know how much I love penn...BBBut I will matchthat dare. check it out honey, allo thread

see you there sara :luck:

I mena, even if I don't get in, at least I will have started the thread. that counts for somehtinfg.

I never back down on dares. even ones that convince me that I'm probably not classy enough for penn anyways 😀
