OOOOOO that would be fun too! I love bringing my doggie around :) I'd bring her everywhere if I could. She's BIG though.

I'm over not getting money.. I graduated a year early and earn enough money to make my EFC higher then most, but well I'm an RA and make no real money anyway.
Next year EFC = 0.. apply early, and hound the fin aid office.

I had typed out a long drawn out ROUGH calculation of how much money Someone would owe if they took out all that was offered and received no grants and didnt start making payments until after a fabled 4 year residency. I took to long and got logged out so I will give my final numbers.

Using 8500 of subsidized loans and the remainder unsubsidized but still stafford..

the total debt after 4th year residency would be $192600 (VERY Rough)

In order to pay that off in say, 30 years like a mortgage would be ~ 1250/month for 50 years

BTW ... I feel like $192600 = MONOPOLY money:eek:

That's why loans, even student loans, and mortgages are enormous rip offs. Banks gets ridiculously rich from students. Low interest rate...yea right - not when it's compounded monthly.

My schedule has been posted on UTLink. I guess that means that we have been registered.

there always sherlocks. Tuesday is pint night there I believe. I know their trivia night is wednesday and it starts at 6ish.

Is there a sherlocks in Dallas? I think we were looking for one last DFW area get together. But I'll be in Houston middle of July, and we should DEFINITELY do a before school get together :)

We didn't have to do it this year. The rising MS 3's had a course a few weeks ago, in preparation for starting the wards.
Dr. Chekhov is right-- we just had a 2 day tech skills thing where we learned CPR, putting in trach's/nasogastric tubes/catheters, practiced sutures on pig feet, and put IV's in each other. We were all slapping our forearms looking for good veins, like a room full of heroine addicts. Probably the most bizarre day of med school yet.

Good luck with MS1!! Hahaha good times :)

Why does it seem like all the events put together for us by the second years always involve dressing up in some kind of themed costume.

I don't want to seem like a party pooper (although I do), but I feel like I outgrew that phase some time in junior high / high school.

Sherlocks is next door to flying saucer.. You searched and missed it by about 30 feet.
At least in Addison

I believe somewhere in the STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY craziness you lose the small piece of sanity that makes not want to dress up.
I've already lost that sanity although my biggest problem is coming up w/ an idea, especially a cost effective idea.

That would be awesome! Just name the time and date and I will be there!

Aggie Sarah, do you want to meet next Tuesday, that way we can try and get more people to come?

I think next Tuesday would be good. A girl messaged me on facebook wanting to go so lets get it all set :)

And I never knew we had a sherlocks here in addison! (well not here because I'm not in Addison but you know.) I had only been to the one in Houston.

So Flying Saucer? If we did it there on Monday it is pint night. It would be busy, but it would be cheaper. But whatever works for me :) We could also go crazy and try Sherlocks to be all different :) They have happy hour until 9.

I know what you mean, I'm kind of considering not going to the retreat. I'm just not a cut loose and get wacky kind of guy. I just don't want to go through another freshman orientation with get to know you games and semi-hazing.

Don't let the M2s wanting us to dress up deter you! I've heard lots of good things about retreat, not just from have fun cut loose but from getting to know people and getting answers to last minute questions from other students and faculty. Obviously if you two don't want to dress up, there are going to be other people who feel the same way, and if you guys will go then you can all meet each other and talk about how much you hate dressing up! :) Dressing up is silly but it is a nice way to bring down walls and get people to act a little silly and open up to each other. :) So please come! I'm sure it will be fun!!! (It had better be!)

You make all very valid points. I was going to retreat come hell or high water, so that wasn't really an issue, but the costume stuff was just one extra hassle for me. I'm sure everything will work itself out though.

You could wear what you always wear and then just say you're coming as an audience member :)

I was wondering what the alcohol policy is for the party? I haven't been to a party sober in over 5 years and have never dressed up for a party while sober. In fact, the last time I dressed up while sober was when I was 11 for Halloween.

Can we bring our own supply or will the EtOH be provided for us?

I would not worry about the alcohol for the past two years there has always been a sufficient supply for everyone of some sort of girlie drink and beer. I have not talked to any of the first years planning your retreat this year but i am sure they have not changed this:)

I hope all of you guys go to the retreat. It is a blast and i met some of my closest friends at mine.

Plenty of EtOH, generally served by your second years.

And we will remember sufficient quantities of ice, unlike last year. ;)

I didn't want too much hassle either, so for last year's theme (MDTV), I just grabbed a military-esque shirt, some colored sunglasses, and went as Bono. Somewhat lame, but simple. A few people really got into it, but most put in only moderate effort.

And for anyone else contemplating not coming to Retreat--STOP THINKING ABOUT IT. Don't be deterred by anything; there will be plenty of things to entertain you and much for you to get out of it. Case in point: last year, in addition to the general dancing and revelry, there was simultaneously a casino set up, manned by much of the faculty. And a dunking booth with your future faculty in it. And lots of second years to talk with. And your classmates to get to know.

So send your checks in if you already haven't!

I'm going to retreat, sounds like a blast.

I'll be there too..need to send in the money.

UTlink list fees/tuition... just < $12000 + 100 to get party and get excited about being a doctor

Either one would be fine with me. I work Monday night though, so it would have to be Tuesday. Just let me know so we can spread the word!

PS I will be at retreat as well! I can't wait!

sorry guys, after panning through about half of the pages, I couldn't do it anymore, so I apologize because this has to be a repeat topic.

I was curious about the humanities program (quite interested as I was a fine arts major myself)..

1. What's the advantage if there is one besides personal enrichment?
2. Is it as much work as it seems?
3. How many people typically do this?
4. Any other info/advice anyone can spill?

I think trivia at the saucer would be really fun, as long as we get there early to get a seat. so Tuesday at the saucer? at 8?

Sounds bueno to me. :) We need to get more people together than the Austinites on facebook! DFW unite!

Definitely! OK all you DFW peeps, Flying Saucer in Addison at 8pm on Tuesday, June 26th!

Flying Saucer is located at 14999 Montfort Drive, Addison, 75240 (at SW corner of Montfort & Belt Line)

Edit: Facebook event created! Anyone who wants to come, stop by our group and RSVP!

There is the McGovern Center for Health, Humanities, and the Human Spirit which puts together many lunch lectures and outside of class enrichment series. They give you Blue Book credit, which is stuff that ends up in your Dean's letter later. Here's the website: http://www.uth.tmc.edu/hhhs/

There's the lunch lecture series which gives you extra credit for your MS1 ICM class-- I forgot what it's called, but it addresses ethics, social concerns, minority populations, etc. A friend of mine put together another lunch lecture series focusing on ethics, with expert panel discussions and things like that. I think the ethics one gives you extra credit for the MS2 behavioral sciences course.

The outside of class things are fun, too. I did the "Art of Observation" class this year. It's 3 evenings in the Museum of Fine Arts (within walking distance of the med school) where you get to train your eye to detail on works of art, and then use the same skills to gather information from pictures of patients. It did surprise me just how much you can learn by just looking-- we'd come up with fairly complicated DDx's (a differential diagnosis is just a focused list of what's probably wrong with the patient) from like 1 picture.

I also did the "Healer's Art" class, which was a few evenings of discussion about life experiences/philosophy. It shows you how contemplating things in your own life can help you better understand difficult and/or inexplicable situations in medicine.

There's lots more than this, so check out the website if you're interested.

that all sounds really awesome.. I'm afraid I don't pay attention enough and will forget/not hear the extra opportunities.
I hope they're brought up again and again so I dont have a chance to forget

So here's a random question. Do they play music at the recreation center? I'm so sick and tired of listening to the crap they blare over the speakers in the gym at my university. It seems inappropriate to play really loud music in a public place like that. You can't possibly satisfy everyone with any selection. Long story short, I hope it's quiet at the UTH-Medical gym.

Does anyone have a lender's list they can post? The one on the financial aid site doesn't work and they won't return my e-mail.

Uh.... the UT system is currently involved in a student loan scandal... thats why the lender list was removed. Basically, the "preferred lender list" wasn't necessarily the best loans you could get and instead were the companies who the financial aid people received bribes from and/or owned stock in.

Also, UT-Houston "chooses" to not participate in the Federal direct loan program(you borrow from the govt) and instead in the Federal Family Education Loan Program, which uses private lenders.

Why didn't they choose to participate in the federal program. Well because private lenders bribed school officials.
In fact one has already resigned for taking kickbacks. I'm referring to the UT system and not necessarily UT-Houston officials. Actually, this is a nationwide problem. New York has the most publicized cases of student loan corruption.

Anyways, the private lender list is unlimited. You want to find a lender who waves all fees, because that is a big way they make you pay extra. Also find one that rewards you for making on time payments with a interest rate drop. I'm personally not signing up with a lender who I haven't called to drill them with questions.

Useful quick reference

I'm definately confused in the whole loan process. I sent back my acceptance to the school early this past week.
Logged on to TG and did entrance counceling.. I guess I have to wait a couple days for my loans to show up there?
can someone give a quick (1.2.3. list of steps to take) so I can make sure I don't make a dumb mistake
ex)
1. return signed award letter
2. complete online entrance interview
3. wait 3 business days for loan to appear on TG
4. do something with the mpn..

Also most banks list 20k as maximum stafford award/year but don't mention medical which the ones that do list much higher amounts specifically for dental.

I (un)fortunately have very little bank loyalty and will go with the one that gives the best rate.

I find the 3% reduction interesting. not sure about origination fees.
citibank looks good with their 1% rate reduction as a "graduation" gift
capitalone looks similar w/ 0 fees and rate reductions. don't know details yet

They play the same crap most gyms play...popular radio (repeat 10 songs over and over) but it's not that loud. You'll be able to overcome whatever they have on with an ipod and some descent head phones without any long term damage to your hearing. You can never satisfy everyone, but I'll never understand how anyone could lift weights while listening to something like John Mayer.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll learn to deal with it. I think with as many ipods around they should just keep the damn radio turned off.

I think the employees at my gym detest me at this point. Every time they turn on some rap station (I mean no offense to people who like rap), I ask them to change the station to alternative/rock. Then a commercial comes on and they change it back to rap, and again I ask them to change it. I do this at least two or three times per workout.

There are only so many times I can listen to a song about bubble gum (some of you know what I'm talking about).

I'd make a note that the 3% isn't a rate reduction but an "outstanding principal balance reduction." I hear that the rate reductions are more important but you'd have to do the math.

What is the average stipend for a student doing summer research? Also, do students who work with a preceptor during the summer get paid ?

I am working on my monthly budget and need to know how I am going to pay for the 2 months during the summer.

The NIH funded SRPers get $5192. Everyone else goes through their faculty... this summer I'm pulling in the same as the undergrads, $2500. Don't know about preceptorships.

for the gym

Oh gotch ya. Yeah, I don't actually like to listen to music when I work out or have stuff attached to me (ipod and earphones etc). I just don't think I should have the gym's music imposed on me. Yes, I do want to have my cake and eat it too.

Look on the brightside. If the presence of music pisses you off, it will help you lift more.

Good call, haha. You're a "glass half full" kinda guy aren't you?
