Just called Dean Strothers a few hours ago. He said 9 people so far have been taken off. He also said I was "within the average" of people taken off every year, so yay! 😀

11 people off now. seems like the list is moving quite fast.

good luck everyone!

Wow, 11 people and not even May 15 yet? I like those odds 😀

Anyone planning on calling today to see about waitlist movement? I called a couple of days ago, so I don't want to bug the crap out of them, haha

Thanks for the updates! I was told to check back on May 15th so I don't want to bug them again until then but I have been wondering how the list was moving. The best of luck to everyone.

17 as of this morning

Oh wow, that's a lot! It was at 11 yesterday afternoon. So, they've already gone through over 1/4 of their average number and it's still a week until May 15. I like this 😀

sorry I haven't posted in a while...depression.

I contacted Dean Strother last week after I got my waitlist notification. He said that I was "the middle of the list." I didn't ask, "like 90 or 120?" I should have...

Anyway, I chatted with him for a while about the process and he said the movement gets hot and heavy from this week until June 1st. He said that the "bulk" of the movement was complete by then. He did tell me that the first alternate was was offered last Thursday (for the first data point)

Good luck everyone!

Ok, someone needs to call, and we should all make bets on how many are off the waitlist as of today. I'm going to say....21.

I couldn't resist finding out. They are up to 20 as of this morning.

Awesome =) Already 1/3 of the average and we still have all week until the big day. Thanks for calling and posting 😀

so how many people does everyone think will be let in off the waitlist this year?

No clue =/. That's the beauty of waitlists. They could take 50 people off in two weeks, and then none for the rest of the summer, or slowly work their way through about 100 people in the same span of time. Who knows?

well, i was thinking of the numbers game. Since the average is 65 for the past 5 years, does anyone know what the low for that time period is? also the high?

Does anyone plan on calling and checking the waitlist movement today? If so, please post.

I plan on calling on on the afternoon of May 15, hopefully there will have been a ton of movement by then =)

so from now on, they are giving phone calls, not letters or emails?

Yep. Dean Strother told me that all acceptances are offered via phone, as they cannot wait for snail mail.

so what happens if you miss the call? lol, do they use email as backup?

I assume they leave a message telling you call back ASAP. If you don't, then they probably go on to the next name. I'm sure they give you a day or two, but beyond that, I don't know.

I love Memphis. Memphis is so awesome.

I'm not kidding.

Good luck everyone =) It's May 15!

I called and talked with Ms. Harris this morning. I wasn't given a specific number (even though I asked) but she said offers were being made everyday. Maybe someone else will have better luck finding out details from Dean Strother. Good luck!

Just talked to the Dean, 35 off as of this minute. He said they are about 7 ahead of schedule compared to last year, which could mean a heavier load or an earlier finish, in his words. We'll see!

Thank you very much for the update!

Memphis is the most awesome city in history.

So any news from/for anybody?

Nope =/

When I called Thursday, they said to call back in two weeks if I hadn't heard anything, so I will call then. Has anyone else called post-May 15th?

I also called May 15 but was told to call back in a couple of weeks if I havent' heard anything. If anyone else finds out the status of the waitlist, please post.

As of this morning 38 offers had been made...I was also told to call back in June if I didn't hear anything prior to that...

Good luck to everyone!

Hey I was accepted at UT-Memphis and will be withdrawing my acceptance for another med school today, so hopefully it will go to someone in this thread, but just wanted to let you know more movement was coming.

Since we are at 38, does anybody know what general ranking they are? one of my friends told me that she was on the waitlist in the top 60

I was told I was in the top 40. I am still waiting so I guess that means I am 39 or 40. Thanks for the updates and good luck to everyone!

I was told I'm "within the average", but not dead last in the average, so I'm at least #59, hehe

Hi everyone, another offer was made this morning, so we're up to 39 now. I tried to ask for a number on my position (I was top third when I asked before 5/15), but Nelson wouldn't tell me more other than "you're in the striking range". I also asked if I should think about reapplying, but he advised that I should just wait for another 2 weeks. He's said even though the movement is slow, it's still moving... however, he can't guarantee anything since every year is different.

slumaker, when you get that magic phone call, please let us know!!!

Let's keep our fingers crossed~ Good luck everyone!

just wanted to throw this out there. I spoke with Diane Harris earlier today, and she told me that last year the person with my rank on the waitlist came off in the last week of may. however, she told me that only twenty something people had been taken off so far (did not give a specific number). so there seems to be some disparity. any thoughts on this?

also, i forgot to say. Where is everyone posting on this thread from? it would be nice to meet some of you, if not before, than after the school year starts. its kind of like being in a club...a painful and agonizing club =D

hi hathes, I'm posting from Nashville. That's odd that the number Duane gave you is so different from the Dean's number. Maybe she meant "of the 38 waitlist offers made, 20ish have taken them "?

hathes, vnezony, and the rest of the gang...

For your sake I hope there is more movement in the ranks! Keep calling and asking. You'll do fine. Good luck!

My name is Drew, I'm 22 and I'm from Memphis; just graduated from UT Knoxville. I'm living in Memphis this summer. I was admitted back in December, so I'm anxious to see who my classmates will be! When you guys get in, consider this. I've got a great apartment all lined up on mud island (5 min from campus, 1 min from downtown). It's in Arbors at Harbortown (part of the Gables community). Approx. $600/mo for 2br, 2 ba combo. Still looking for a roommate! So, email at [email protected] if you're interested! Can't wait to meet you all!

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! See you soon.

-Drew

I'm from Memphis and I gotta tell you that Mud Island is closer to 10-12 minutes from UT campus. I used to live at the Arbors and traffic completely sucks in the morning (don't think weird hours will protect you because a ton of students/residents/attendings/St. Jude types live there). It's hard to make a left turn out of the Arbors because of the 2 lane road, and sometimes the trolley comes and traffic backs up all the way to the roundabout (pointless, stupid roundabout) which adds a great deal of time to the commute. Then, you have to pray that you catch all the lights on 2nd street just right, which rarely happens. If you get stuck at every light on 2nd, which is a much more frequent occurrence, I'd say you add at least an additional 5 minutes to the drive. I hated commuting from Mud Island. You're also dealing with a ton of lights/traffic on Front or 2nd to get to downtown parking (can take up to 15 minutes even when there's not a Redbirds game/Grizzlies game/random event).

I later moved to Midtown (by which I mean somewhere near Madison & McLean/Overton Park area/Harbert & Belvedere, not U. Memphis territory) and it took me less time to get downtown than it did from the Island. Also, because there are fewer lights, my commute to campus was reduced to about 5-6 minutes on average even though my house was probably further away physically than my apartment at the Arbors.

Other things I hated about the Island: Miss Cordelia's is super expensive and there are no other close grocery stores. The only gas station is that ghetto Shell at Front and what used to be Auction. If you can believe it, it's actually more humid/mosquito-infested on the Island than the rest of Memphis. It took 45 minutes to get to my parents' place in G-town (vs. 25-30 from Midtown). There are no big trees and with a few exceptions all the buildings on the island are cookie-cutter and boring--no character. Also, rent was outrageous and is probably worse now. I cut my rent in half by moving to Midtown.

Midtown has a bunch of great neighborhoods with interesting houses and beautiful streets lined with tall, green trees. But like anywhere in Memphis, you have to be aware of local crime--however, I had a buddy who had his car stolen 3 times and broken into another few times in a gated complex on the Island--as for me I had my car broken into once while I lived on the island and once while I lived in Midtown; that's about par for the course for 4 years in Memphis. There are plenty of houses for rent and little apartment complexes all over Midtown. There are a ton of cool bars, restaurants (Huey's, Molly's, Bosco's, Memphis Pizza Cafe, the Bayou, Blue Monkey, Zinnie's, Hi-Tone, Neil's, Murphy's), grocery stores (Ike's, Kroger, Easy Way) and coffee shops (High Point Coffee, Starbucks, Rhodes College library) within a few blocks of each other--all the Island had was Movie & a Pizza and Miss Cordelia's.

Drew, I'm sure you'll find a roommate because all incoming students are brainwashed into living on the Island--I was, and I'm from Memphis. I'm not trying to hose you but I would advise anyone moving to Memphis to look for a place in Midtown. I was much happier after I moved there.

I was told I was in the top 1/4. Which I guess means under 55?!?!?!?

Hey, so if we all get a phone call around or before jun 4th, how does the housing thing work? i heard something about a housing weekend, but im not sure how the school organizes that. so i guess this is more of an ad for a roomie or 2, because its never too early to prepare =D. Also, does anyone know the count so far?

FYI in case you haven't seen it - I was looking at the admissions website yesterday and noticed the New Student Orientation link. Under scheduled events it talks about the housing weekend which is May 30 - June 1. The NSO link has a lot of good information.
