I just found that Utah State University will be accepting applications for its first class in Fall 2025- taking applications only through their USU graduate portal (not VMCAS)- so I thought I would start a thread.

Has the school released any updated information? Like “spring” application timeline could mean spring semester like January-May or spring season like March/April … having submissions in March/April feels very late for an August start.

It will be a very short admissions cycle. Per my last conversation with the an admissions member about 2 weeks ago, they still do not have any dates finalized and are unsure of the timeline themselves. They’re still waiting for the letter of reasonable assurance, which is not even guaranteed to come this spring. It will likely go past the national day of acceptance timeline as well, and it is rolling admissions (only taking about 40 students as well). From my understanding it will be late spring with a very short application window.

I will def give Utah a try if they do open their application in the spring! Unsure how it would work but hey, worth a shot

Here’s all the information btw!!

It will be exactly like the VMCAS application, everything will just be submitted through their grad school application portal. Your recommenders will have to submit their letters again through them, and they’ll have their own questions on the app etc.

Is anyone else considering applying? I know it's a toss up to apply and go to a newly established program, but I don't mind being a "guinea pig" so to speak.

Utah State isn't a newly established program in the traditional sense. They have been part of the Washington State DVM program since 2012 and have had a curriculum in place for the first two years of the program since then. They also already have some fourth year rotations as part of the WSU program. I actually enjoyed my first two years there and don't think you would even feel like a "guinea pig".

I'm considering applying, but I'm moreso worried about how short the application period will be. Also how much notice we'll even get for when it'll be opened. I see on the website is says after the decision deadline (April 15th) most likely?

Does anyone know if they accept international coursework?

That's awesome! I apologize, I didn't know that

Though this is true USU will be utilizing the distributive model for clinical year as they do not have a teaching hospital (via their website) so I’d take pause that the possible increased expenses involved with that model

I am getting my Masters at Utah State right now and they broke ground a few months ago for a teaching hospital on campus, anticipating opening in 2026!

That building is not a teaching hospital per their website they will not have one.

I am a current second year student at USU (in the WIMU [emoji[emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6]]]]+[emoji[emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6]]]] program). Yes, they will be using a distributive model and will be using clinics in the Logan area as well as down into Salt Lake City and elsewhere

Not sure what happened with the formatting here but here is what I was trying to say haha:

anyone have any updated info on when we can start applying?
They said applications would open sometime in the spring and would likely go past the April 15th deadline. My advisor says they still have no definitive date, it’s all contingent on the letter of reasonable assurance. We did have a site visit there yesterday for the MPH accreditation and I believe they are having people out for the vet program this week (I hope).

I don’t know if anyone else was on a quarter system for their undergrad, but I asked USU about my Genetics course since it’s 4 quarter credits and not equal to 3 semester credits, and advisor is saying that my class isn’t equivalent to their requirement since it’s equal to their lower level Genetics… Kind of frustrating if I can’t figure this out, b/c my Genetics class was literally a general Genetics course and my school didn’t offer a part 2 or anything. I already graduated so I’d probably be learning the same thing if I took a Genetics course at CC. I’m a Nevada resident and this is my only possible option for WICHE, because they have a contract with strictly Utah🙄🙄 Such a weird requirement since no other vet schools had a problem with it

That does seem weird . . . if they only require 3 semester credits, I don’t see why you would have to take a part 2 of anything.
Is it the level of the class and not the credit type that’s the problem? I’ve had a similar issue with biochemistry, because my school only offered one biochem class (literally just called “Biochemistry”) whereas most universities have entire biochemistry departments; when I retook biochem at a different school, what I actually needed was part 2 or 3 of their biochemistry sequence and I had to get permission from the professor to take the class since that university’s requirements were more strict than the one I actually got my degree from. Would USU want you to take a more advanced genetics class at a nearby university or online?

Has anyone heard any whispers of this school opening their portal?

I see, maybe I’ll ask if I can take a more specific type of genetics. It was a level issue, but USU’s upper level genetics is just called Principle of Genetics anyway and some of the things overlap, just not everything sadly. I’ll ask about the CC class but so far what I see offered is a general Genetics class that will definitely overlap. Biochemistry makes a little more sense because of the metabolic, structural, etc. but genetics I’m really not sure haha. Advisor can’t even tell me what my class is missing, he just said the faculties come together to determine the class at USU that mine adds up to.

If they can’t tell you what you’re missing, how are you supposed to find another class that fills the requirement 😂
If they only require 3 semester credits for genetics, it seems to me that any genetics class at all should do—if they wanted something more advanced than just any old intro course, wouldn’t that mean that we’d have to take more than one semester of it, anyway?

Who have you been emailing for prerequisites? I literally cannot get anyone to email me back!
I’ve been emailing the vet school admission email but is there an actual persons email that is better?
Thanks

I have been emailing Ryan Soelberg, sometimes he responds and sometimes not. Yesterday was a good day 🤣

He responded to one of my emails 2 weeks ago and I emailed back and answered the questions he asked and got no response. But now I feel like I should just send him another separate email as a reminder maybe with the attachments in them

Yeah exactly! I hope they can look into that more because it does sound like their genetics is more advanced atleast compared to other vet schools

Ok I think I will not be applying to USU because of the Genetics requirement, so I advise others to check their prerequisites regardless of if they applied to other schools with the same ones. Maybe it’s just a quarter system issue, but I was confused to see on their website that BIOL 3060 is what they require, yet the course description says that’s available only to Bioinformatics majors. BIOL 2030 equivalence is not accepted even though that seems like the one a school should prefer? Hope they can change things in the future…

Wait so what is it that they don’t accept? Genetics classes that are lower level science?

I guess any genetics class that isn’t equal to their BIOL 3060 class. Mine was upper level, intro genetics for 4 quarter credits but I guess only equal to their BIOL 2030, which is still upper level, just not as much as they need?

That’s really strange what exactly did they say about your course? Just that it didn’t match theirs? I wouldn’t even think genetics of all courses would be a problem almost every school has the same type of intro class

He said “Regarding your inquiry about the requirement for BIOL 3060 over BIOL 2030, BIOL 3060 is required as it is a more advanced course in genetics, aligning with the depth of knowledge needed for the DVM program. While many other vet schools do have introductory-level genetics requirements, we’ve chosen a 3000-level course to ensure that students are well-prepared for the complex biological concepts in veterinary medicine. If the requirements change in the future, I’ll certainly make sure to notify you.”

But, he said my local CC class that also offers an intro Genetics class would be good if I took that class, so I think it still is just a quarter system thing.

That’s so strange. I’m still not sold on applying to USU but I will make sure to double check my pre-reqs if I do.

Would a 3000 level genetics course correspond to a 300 level? I’m assuming yes but not sure. My genetics Course was 306

Okay, so 2 questions about prerequisites because my email has not been answered yet.
1. I know a lot of you have been talking about advanced genetics prereq. Would a 2000 level not count?
2. I have 8 credits for inorganic chemistry. I took general chemistry 1 and 2. The lecture counted for 3 credits and the lab for 1. What class are people using for the other two credits? Why is it 10 credits? I feel like that is such a random amount.

I just emailed and asked for clarification on that because I don’t know any other schools that want 10 credits worth of gen chem since one lecture is usually worth 3 credits and the lab is worth 1 credit. I’ll let you know what they respond back with

What I don’t understand is it lists the same thing for the bio requirement but then says only 8 semester credits are required. My Chem classes were the same 3credits for class and 1 for lab. I’m not taking another Chem class for 1 school to fill 2 credits 😭

Update for the general chem requirements! This is what Ryan said “

Basically I’m sending him my gen chem 1 lecture and lab syllabus to see if they meet it but I have a feeling they will
Do I have to send like all of my prerequisites for this lmao I never had an issue with a single other school so random. Guess I’ll send him mine and see 🙂 thanks
