Utah State University c/o 2029 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If they accept less than why did they say 10 šŸ˜ dawg
No idea. Maybe some schools do their credits differently so they just said 10. What I think it should say is 8-10 credits

Do you guys think there will be a lot of applicants for the first cycle? Iā€™m thinking about applying

Hard to say, but my guess is there will be fewer applicants for USU than there were for the schools in the regular 2024/25 VMCAS cycle. Hereā€™s my reasoning:
Everyone should have decisions from the other schools by the time the USU application opens, so I really only see two types of students applying:
1) people who were only rejected or waitlisted this cycle
2) people who were accepted this cycle, but for whatever reason would rather attend USU than the school(s) that already accepted them
I think the second group is probably fairly small, since I donā€™t know of many reasons USU as a new school would be more desirable than an established school (lower tuition, maybe, or being a better location for some people)
However, group 1 is probably fairly big, since a ton of people get rejected for a wide variety of reasons. Itā€™s hard to guess how many will want one last shot at starting vet school in 2025 rather than wait another year. Itā€™s also dependent on how many people hear about USU at all; I only heard about it through SDN.

I think so, I have a lot of classmates at USU who will be applying. A lot of Utah residents will probably be applying as we couldnā€™t participate in WIMU with WSU anymore. There will also be contract seats for Nevada residents that are applying.

You couldnā€™t apply for WIMU this cycle? Even though Utah still doesnā€™t have their letter of reasonable assurance?

Correct, I didnā€™t have the option, it was only for Montana and Idaho.

Thatā€™s crazy. They must be really, really sure that USU will have a vet class starting this fall.

That sums it up pretty well. As someone who got into island schools and is waitlisted for a US school i totally fall into one of these categories

I believe there are approx 10OOS spots this cycle. The rest are being held for IS students. I know their first four year classes is anticipated to be quite small according to admissions when I spoke to fhem in early Jan.

Keep in mind that since we wonā€™t know if Utah State is accredited until their first class is almost graduated, thereā€™s a chance you would have to go through the PAVE program. Iā€™ve heard that the PAVE program is really tough and pretty expensive. It includes a Qualifying Science Examination (QSE) (which is said to be harder than the NAVLE in some cases), an Evaluated Clinical Experience (ECE) at an AVMA-accredited veterinary college, and ultimately, passing the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE). It also takes at least another year to complete all of these requirements. So, thatā€™s a huge consideration when applying to Utah if you want to put in those expenses and extra time, rather than just applying to an already accredited school.

That's not fully true. The same thing applied to Rowan and UAZ and Texas Tech when they first opened a few years ago. As long as Utah gets a LORA (Letter of Reasonable Assurance), their program is safe. Nobody will have to take additional testing because the LORA comes from the AVMA. It will not receive FULL accreditation until the NAVLE results from their first class comes out. If it's an 80%, they get full accrediation. If they get below that, they will receive a provisional accreditation status (like UAZ has and fixed). That just means they will need to tweak their cirriculum to ensure the next classes have 80+ scores.

This is not accurate. If they have the letter of reasonable assurance PAVE is not required .

No, last update was that apps would open beginning of April. They still donā€™t have their letter of reasonable assurance though.

Okay. I wasnā€™t sure if they were thinking end of March. I guess April makes sense

Hey guys, current second-year at USU. I have a sort of update after the pre-vet conference that happened at USU recently. This may have already been discussed on the thread but here goes.
1. USU will hopefully be receiving their letter of reasonable assurance very soon. Keep an eye out for updates if you aren't already doing so
2. Admissions will be done on a rolling basis, essentially first-come first-served. It would be to your advantage to submit your application as soon as it becomes available because they will start accepting students as applications come in. The application will look very similar to the VMCAS.

If you guys have any questions, I can try to get answers šŸ˜Š

i just spent like 45 minutes inputting my courses and info into the application and it crashed and deleted everything lol they rlly donā€™t want me to apply huh
The same exact thing just happened to mešŸ˜

the supplemental application part for me has not opened. I submitted and paid. anyone else having this issue?

im having that problem too. its been more than an hour for me

i wonder if they have to process the application then that will get sent out?

Did anyone else get the message that your payment has been processed but we were unable to submit your application?

Yes, I think that is what we are all facing. We are all also facing the supplemental materials application not opening up due to the influx of traffic on the website.

As soon as I got the email, I began my application. I would be an OOS student, having to race to submit these does not feel equitable, especially when competing for 10 spots. Also, my vet LOR said they will submit it this weekend, but if my entire application is held up by one or two small things for a few days, how is that fair, either, if that makes sense. Having just 1 day or 5 days to submit this to even be fighting for 1 of 10 seats feels super unfair...

I am able to submit my application materials, KIRA, etc. on my own and swiftly, but not allowing me to have a fighting chance at a seat due to factors such as LORs or website crashes that are out of my control is not fair. They should have a hard deadline instead of the rolling admissions. This feels like the hunger games.

Anyone know if a four quarter unit course will satisfy a three semester unit course? I emailed bur was wondering if someone asked already

Also not sure how strict theyā€™re going to be with courses equivalencies since thereā€™s no comparison list with schools? E.g. I assume any biology class with lab will be sufficient?

I totally agree with the frustration. I've had this application freeze on me 2-3 times now while trying to save, and I'm getting really tired of re-entering everything over and over again. This is taking a lot of time, and there are still a lot of errors with their application. It clearly wasn't ready to be published and put out (i.e. the number of credits won't take a decimal even if that's what it says on your transcript), and now I'm having to wait to hear back from the school. We shouldn't have to be punished because of their systems crashing or because of the mistakes they made on their application. I've been in communication with them about all of my questions about how to go around these errors, and so I plan on asking if they would consider just publishing a hard deadline instead of doing rolling admissions considering all of the mistakes and delays that are out of our control and thus making the process as fair as possible.

Getting passed up because one of my recommenders takes 14 hours instead of 12 hours is not fair. Feel free to message me, but I will be emailing them the same thing! I'm sure there are at least 100 OOS students right now applying.

Itā€™s unlikely they extend any offers in the first two weeks applications are open so donā€™t sweat the application crashing šŸ™‚
Based on what they've said, students who meet the bare minimum requirements but apply first i.e. finish their application and meet all requirements the soonest will be admitted. A student submitting their application 4 seconds after that student would not be considered if all seats are filled. Having an application crash or LOR not submitted in 24 hours impedes this.

I definitely hear what you're saying and appreciate the input! However, as a POC, female, and disabled applicant, I feel very strongly about making sure that everything is as equitable as possible, and even if they choose not to review applications in the first two weeks, I want to ensure that they understand that this needs to be as fair of a process as possible

Yeah, I'm getting a little frustrated with their system and might have to finish my application later. At this point, I can't even refresh my frozen page without the link crashing lol, I don't think it helps that a lot of us are feeling the added on stress from these things, so hopefully they will consider putting out a hard deadline instead.

I submitted mine and paid $55. I cannot finish the application because the submission for supplemental information is unavailable. Submitting this entire application quickly was supposed to be key to having the opportunity for a seat. I hope there are other students who feel the same way besides me, you, and the other folks that liked our posts.

I think emailing them and politely explaining what's going on and our perspective will help. It's their first time going through the process (and they're probably mostly prepared to go through VMCAS to be honest) so they probably didn't anticipate all of this happening and don't even realize it's happening, but I think the more of us who email them to explain the situation, then I think the better they will be able to understand what's actually going on and how to proceed to make this as fair for everyone as possible.

In their email they blatantly state itā€™s fine to take a few days. I have a feeling they wonā€™t be accepting every student that submits first and meets basic requirements. Theyā€™re going to fill their class with people who will make it diverse in experience, life skills, and backgrounds. Donā€™t sweat a few hours itā€™s not worth it.

I saw everyone having trouble submitting last night, so I decided to wait until this morning. The application is still not working. I submitted payment but the application did not submit. The computer told me I had to reach out to resolve the issue. I wrote an email to 4 different places because I was unsure who to write it to. Does anyone have an email for the vet school or is it just Ryan or the graduate school email?

Wait they are only doing 10 OS? I thought it would be like 20OS and 20IS šŸ™

I think a diverse class is everything! How can they make it diverse if they only accept 10 OS students though?

I mean thatā€™s the age old struggle of every school that has oos seats under 50 seats

I called them this morning and they told me they are putting a pause on their application system to figure out the issues they are having. They said they would contact me when they have it fixed. So we are on standby until further notice.

Did they happen to mention how long they think it'd take to figure out the issues?

They just sent an update email! wow, I am loving how communicative they are

This is directly from their website:
ā€œApplications are reviewed on a rolling basis until seats are filled; the sooner you apply, the sooner you may receive an update on your application status.ā€
ā€œApplications are being reviewed on a rolling basis; seats are filled as applicants are deemed acceptable by our selection committees.ā€ ā€¦

I totally understand what youā€™re saying but it doesnā€™t guarantee an acceptance on submitting it first. They donā€™t specify that meeting basic requirements = admission. Take your time and make your application the best it can be!

Has anyone asked about AP credits fulfilling the lab pre-req for the DVM program? On the AP credit transfer page it says that you need to ask your specific advisor but I still haven't heard back.

I have not heard about AP fulfilling lab requirements. I would say enter your exam and score as it asks, and continue with the application. Also, if they aren't responding, they are busy, but try emailing multiple emails. One person from one department will know something about it most likely.
