VCOM/ BLUEFIELD MABS program 2022-2023

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey! I got accepted to the program last week! I've heard some not-so-great things about the spring semester, especially the immunology course. Is the course and professor that bad that it's causing many students to not meet their benchmark for the spring semester and lose their seat? How did you study for immunology, and do you have any tips that could help us out with the new professor?

Also, are the lectures in the google drive for immunology from the older professor, or is it updated with the new professor's lectures?
Pm’d you!

I called Sheila Ballard and she told me last year 56% matriculated into vcom, idk if that's any indication for this year.
That sounds pretty standard and around where it was for me (granted this now 5 years ago wow time has flown). Not everyone in the program is cut out to be a physician and this program reveals it quickly, leaving many upset when it doesn't pan out. It's still a great opportunity if your odds of getting in normally are low.

Does this include OMABS kids?

Was accepted last week, but I was accepted to ACOM about a week before that so I’ll be giving up my seat!

Hi everyone I got accepted to the MABS program at VCOM about 2 weeks ago and I also got accepted into the Drexel MBS. I have been trying to weigh my options and I emailed Sheila asking her if she could connect me with any students who finished the program that would be willing to talk to me about their experience but she said it was a violation of privacy. She said I could meet previous students at orientation so basically I would need to give my deposit in order to speak to a previous student. I was hoping someone on here could help me out 🙂

Does Drexel provide any linkage?

Being accepted to the med school via benchmarks is not the same for online. The online program only gives you an interview. It’s bs.
I know there was an online student at our graduation who will be joining us at VCOM Virginia this year. He had nothing but great things to say about the online program and what it did for him.

What we were told was 56% of the class was accepted in December after meeting the benchmarks. I know of at least two classmates who met the GPA and MCAT benchmarks but had issues with the mini interview. We were told with March and May acceptances over 60% on the class would probably be accepted to VCOM. There were some classmates who got accepted to other DO schools.

1 out if 25 you’re proving my point about the online program lol. I’ve heard from multiple people to stay clear of the online program. I’m not familiar with the in person program.

He told me that there were less than 10 in the program, and he was not the only one accepted. What makes you think that you really know so much? I see nobody from the online program posting here. How is it that you have heard from "multiple people"? Particularly since you claim 25 in the program.

What's your question for previous students?

Interesting? what's the problem with the online program that you've heard? The courses are the same (except 1)..you take 2 courses at a time. It can be spread over 2 years. Some can get in after 1 yr just like those in person. You don't get the mini interview like in person because they do not know students as personally when they take it online.

Hi everyone! Congrats to everyone who got accepted.

I submitted my application late in May (I heard about this program pretty late). I got put on the waitlist on June 1st and was wondering if there were any others in the same boat as me. Do you think it's still possible to get admission into this program? I noticed the current fb page says there are 85 people in the group. Does this mean I still got a chance or should I lose all hope? fingers crossed🤞

Hey! I recently got accepted to this program but not quite sure how to pay the tuition. Are there any accepted students that have paid or know how to pay the tution?

Hi guys, I will be in the OMABS program this year. Is there a separate fb group for the online group or is it the same one that was previously posted?

Hi I just got accepted! Can someone add me to the Facebook group please!

Are you using loans? If so, you have to fill out FAFSA. School will tell you how much you can take out and you accept the amount you want...if you haven't received that info yet it will come from Sheila Ballard

I won't be paying my tuition with loans. Do you know if there is a portal where I have to set up a payment plan or go ahead and pay?

Hi! I wanted to know if given the choice would you do this program again? I saw lots of things online about how its not feasible in the second semester but I feel like you need to know how to study for different subjects. Also do you know if anyone met all the benchmarks and did not get accepted? Thank you!

I don't recall those specifics sorry...reach out to Ms. Sheila Ballard to know exactly what to do.

As someone who completed this program and will be attending VCOM, yes I would do it again.. you're always going to see people who say don't do it and those that say to do it. You have to decide what information to take and realize okay it is difficult but I'm going to do what I have to do to make it or go yikes ppl say it's not hard and not worth it so I'm not going to do it. Its feasible since there are students who matriculated into vcom. It prepares you for medschool 100% although I'd say mabs students are held to an even higher standard than medstudents simply because the gpa benchmarks are so high. Now if all you have to do is get a higher mcat score, then maybe you just do that. But if you have a lower score, don't feel like retaking it, also have a lower gpa, applied to medschool before, life and just want a sure in by working super hard, it's worth it. That's not to say people who didn't make it didn't work hard.they did. you just have to find out what works for you and find it out early! Do not wait. I do not know about your last question. If there are those in that situation, I personally don't know who they are.

Go to the Bluefield website and look up BU Central. They can direct you to the right person.

Definitely recommend this program. I was an ok student but Dr. Hill taught me how to be a very good student in terms time usage and study techniques. Spring semester harder than fall, but I jumped from a 3.7 to a 3.8. Reading this site it sounds like everyone was failing and that was not true. I have only heard of a couple of students who lost their acceptance to VCOM.

Dochopeful13 has some incorrect info. I know that online had less that 10 students in May and multiple students accepted.. Not certain that it ever had 25.

Study well, study hard, and attend the exam reviews before test day!! Many professors offer exam reviews (or practice exams) to go over their style of exam questioning and clarify any key topics that will be tested/answer any burning questions you may have. Highly recommend that you attend those as well^
Does anyone know if you can be accepted to the MABS program with a missing pre req as long as it’s complete by the time classes start?

Does anyone know if the 15 day deadline for the deposit is a hard deadline? And if it’s just straight 15 days or 15 business days?

Hi. I am planning on applying to OMABS program since I don’t live close to the campus 😒 my worry is to hit the benchmarks.
