well, i am in the class of 2011 and we have 160 students...the class of 2012 has a 190 students (and they seem to be tight on space)...i think 190 is max for enrollment...!!!

congrats on all who got in so far...it feels good to be an MS-I to be! shoot me with any questions u got!

I applied to some other schools and I will be making a very difficult decision in the near future if I get in the other places I think I have a fair shot. So, don't worry, you're not the only one thinking it over.

Well being slightly behind you guys, I just recieved the VCOM secondary.

Questions:

"Your AACOMAS application indicates you are deficient eight hours of biology and six hours of additional science coursework. "

I'm taking the bio prereqs now but whats up with six hours of additional science coursework? I've certainly had more than enough science classes...

Second, WTF is up with a 13 page long secondary application?

Third, with my states and being a NY resident, is it even worth filling out the secondary? http://www.vcom.vt.edu/general/recruit.html

I'm not from appalachia, not from a rural area, and not a minority. Is it just a waste of money to do the secondary?

No, its not a waste of money....in class of 2011, we have 4 students from NY and 3 from NJ, areas not considered Appalachian! in 2012, there is a few ones too, if i remember correctly! Good luck with your application....and yes, the 2ndary is a pain!

Yeah - it was awesome. I'm guessing the admissions committee meet on Thursdays, but I'm not sure if it is every week or every other week. Either way, just be sure to ask Bea at the end of the day when you all will hear a decision and she will tell you an exact date (at least she did for my day and for my roommate, who interviewed on 9/29).

Good luck with your interview! The school is awesome and the interview was very interesting and relaxed.

I'm guessing you're talking about PCOM? When did you interview? The first year that gave the tour on my interview day chose VCOM over PCOM and he is from PA. He might be a good person to talk to if you wanted to - I have his email and can give it to you.

I'm pretty sure that parts of southern NY are in Appalachia. Maybe check it out and see if you qualify. But I'm not sure if vcom is interested in all of Appalachia or just southern Appalachia.

I was referring to not hearing anything after submitting the secondaries to four schools in Phili.

The secondary for VCOM is long, but it really isn't difficult. It's mostly fill in the blank answers.

Also, I was just looking at the VCOM website... here's hope for a lot of people. MCAT is not weighed nearly as heavily as GPA or the Interviews. They hold the greatest importance. So, for those of you that have a lower MCAT, apply and rock the interviews!

Oh yeah, not quite. It's still worth applying. Seems like a great school. Even though you might be at a disadvantage, you still have a chance. Good luck. Hope everything works out.

dont let that statement fool you! the avg for class of 2011 was a 26.5 MCAT ranging from a low of 22 to a high of 37

class of 2012, i believe their stats are somewhat the same wit avg around 26-27 as well...i dont know the tiny details....but usually, during orientation of the beginning of school, the administration will give you the stats and the data of the class as in the youngest and oldest age, lowest and highest MCAT +GPA, other demographic and cultural data.....

but like u said, GPA is impt to VCOM!!!! if u dont have a solid GPA, u better have a solid MCAT score, otherwise, ur chances are not favorable

How did you guys get to VCOM? I am in maryland and its a 5 hr drive to the school, which I don't want to do. Is there any other options? Bus? Train?

You should be able to take a straight shot on I-81. If you're worried about money, you may want to just hit the bed realllly early, get up at 3 and head here so you don't have to worry about a hotel.

I read the whole website last night and am very intrigued by this little tidbit:

Board of Governors, The University of North Carolina
VCOM received a regular permit for licensure from The Board of Governors, The University of North Carolina to operate third and/or fourth year rotations in the state of North Carolina. This license was granted on June 13, 2008.

VCOM is pursuing licensure from the State of North Carolina in order to operate third and/or fourth year rotations in North Carolina. As part of the licensure requirement, VCOM holds a Guaranty Bond for prepaid tuition for those students who train in the third and/or fourth years in North Carolina. A copy of this bond is accessible in VCOM's Finance Department and may be reviewed upon request.

just curious, does this mean that tuition for 3rd & 4th years who train in NC is covered? that would be a heck of an incentive.

In all honesty I would not believe this too much anymore. I've experienced and heard first hand of people with lower MCATs and steller other stats have a tough time with VCOM. It is very misleading.

They are very willing. I am from TN (borders VA), but there are still people in my class that are from some far-out places like California. Obviously you had two completely identical candidates, one from california and one from virginia, they would take the one from Virginia. But just focus on making a solid and well-rounded application and you should be fine.

I would like to buy a house, apartment, or townhouse.
Can anyone give me some information about the prices and whether that is a good idea or not? I would also need to find a roommate. Please any help would be greatly appreciated.

As far as housing... if I were you, I would just wait on buying a house / townhouse given what our economy is doing. While you're in med school, the last thing you want to worry about is fixing a broken water heater, housing prices collapsing, or anything. Pick the path of least resistance.

IF you want to buy a house without a doubt, PM me and I'll give you the name of a good realtor. Housing prices for a moderate 1200-1500 sq. ft house or townhome here run about 125,000-150,000. Christiansburg tends to be a little cheaper than Blacksburg (and in my opinion, is a better place to live. Free gym (Christiansburg Rec. Center), less collegey, has a Wal-Mart)

As far as roommates go, send an e-mail to Megan and ask her to add you to her e-mail list of housing opportunities. People occasionally send out an advertisement like, "Looking for male or female, no pets, very tidy, etc..." If you don't know anyone else coming here, that would be a good place to start. Hope this helps!

I agree... you may want to hold off on buying something so you arent stuck with something and perhaps be sent elsewhere for rotations or go somewhere else for a residency and then get stuck with a house. A number of my classmates are still trying to sell their places. Some sold, some havent.....you could be lucky or you could get stuck.... just think long and hard about it.

3 interviewers, I had two that were MDs. The interview feedback had a lot of loaded questions regarding ethics, etc., but I didn't get asked any from any of my interviewers. Very laid back and kind people. Just wanted to know why DO, why VCOM, why medicine, and wanted to get to know you.

Be ready for some ethical questions! I was lucky and didn't get any (all 3 were laid back) but the guy that sat next to me was not so lucky. He had 2 out of 3 interviewers grill him; it's just the luck of the draw with who you get.

If you like WVSOM you should check out VCOM. Especially since VCOM is a hell of a lot cheaper and a great school.

Price is not an issue as most of it will be covered by the military. I like the rural setting of WVSOM, and it's a pretty big campus dedicated just to this school. I don't like how some DO students do everything in just one building, w/o stepping a foot outside the door, or go to another building for classes or lab. This is how my undergrad was, and I loved it. Another great factor for choosing WVSOM is that it has an airport like 4 miles away from the school, wheras Roanoke airport is almost an hour away from VCOM. The training that I would get at one DO school is pretty much the same thing I would get at another one, but it's the other smaller things that matter too.

VCOM is in the process of completing a sports medicine research building and has the Knoll Building which will be simulations and OMM. You'd also have to step out of the building to go to the gym or VT's libraries. 😉

I just got an email telling me that my application was put on hold. I'm totally bummed! What does this actually mean? Is there still any chance of an interview when you app is put on "hold" or should I be putting my eggs in another basket now?

darnit...me too. VCOM was one of my top choices to.
