News:
In Fall 2011, VCOM will open a branch campus in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The branch campus will offer all four years of osteopathic medical education to 150 medical students per year, totaling to a four-year student body of 600 students.
VCOM is proud to join a community with a rich tradition of educational excellence with six colleges, including our Spartanburg educational affiliate, Wofford College. VCOM partners with Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina physicians and community-based hospitals, such as Spartanburg Regional, to provide on-site clinical rotation instruction for its third and fourth year medical students and graduate residents.

The school is available in AACOMAS Application. I will be applying to the school.

Ill be applying here let's just hope they look at me since I'm oos

I havent decided whether or not to apply to VCOM -SC or normal VCOM, since you can only choose one

What do you guys think? I cant really think of an advantage of VCOM - SC other than if u like the area more and its newer so maybe easier to get into (i say maybe, i really have no factual evidence).

Thoughts?

I am currently on the waiting list for this year for VCOM. But if there is not enough movement on the list then I have automatic acceptance. However, I get to choose between VA or SC campus. And I am stuck on which I should pick?!? I love SC, and would like to go there. But there are classes above you that may offer you advice at the VA campus, the teachers are better known at VA, brand new teachers at SC, etc. I am just wondering what would be best for the learning aspect instead of location. What all do you think? Where would you choose?

Seems like u already know which one u wanna go to for educational purposes. Everybody will have different reasons to choose one or the other. Don't count on those reasons to make ur decision because those reasons may not apply to u. Some pol may just apply to the newer one cus they think it's easier to get into...others may love something else about it. Everyone different.

U gotta do some research on the schools..call the admissions offices and get some information from them about it...and see which one works out better for u.

Good luck

Hi! I'm in the same boat as you. On the one hand I really liked the VA campus when i visited for the interview and Blacksburg seems like a really cool place to be. Also like you said they have the institutions in place and there are people that have been through it already. However, the CC is much closer to home (only like 90 min away) and I think it would be great to be a part of something relatively new. Right now I am leaning toward the CC but I would like to get more information on it first before I decide. I am hoping that the admissions office will give us some info on it so we can make the best decision (it would be nice to have the opportunity to take a tour of the facility or something first before we decide), but anyway i hope this helps and i guess in the end it is a personal decision. Either way good luck deciding and hope to see you next year!

the CC is much closer to home for me as well, and it seems like there may more job opportunities in Spartanburg for my fiance than there would be in Blacksburg. Right now I'm totally 50/50 between the 2. I too hope that admissions gives us more info on the CC campus so we can make a good decision. I wonder when the facility will be finished for a tour?

submitted my app here...

i'm o.o.s too, lets hope that since this is the first class, we have better chance at getting in

I applied EDP to VCOM-Carolinas! This place is going to be awesome!

I was told my the director of admissions that it will be just as rigourous to get into the CC campus as the VA campus. They get so many well qualified applicants that it would make no sense to lower the standards. I wish you the best of luck though! I just have to decide either VA or SC!! I loved VCOM on my interview day, it's my top choice.

I'm neither pre-med nor osteopathic, but I'm from the area so I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.

The PD for the Family Residency there was a big force behind this new school. He's good at what he does, so I figure that's a plus. The hospital in town is excellent, were I not from there I would've ranked them higher. That being said, the estimate is that only 30-50 students will be able to stay there for 3rd-4th years. I know they plan on sending y'all to other hospitals around the state that don't have medical schools attached, so I'm not sure what to tell you about that. Some seem to like the idea, some not as much. Hopefully if you go to school there you'd learn that before you had to make your decision.

Being from the area, I'd be happy to answer any general questions y'all have about Spartanburg. Town in general, jobs for significant others, and so on. Just let me know if I can help.

That's correct. You can only apply to ONE medical school (allo and osteo) and wait for their decision. Should you not be accepted, you are then free to apply to other schools.

Has anyone gotten a secondary back from VCOM-CC yet?

I received an email from the admissions office early this morning stating that they have received my application and would review my credentials and should let me know something in roughly one week.

This school really has a great admissions director, she's willing to help in any way possible. I'm really excited about the coming months and the whole process!

got the same e-mail, which is weird b/c my primary hasn't been submitted yet, not sure how they knew I applied,

no secondary yet tho...

Just got my email saying they received my application. Just for time line I submitted my aacomas on 6/3. Good luck everyone. This is my first secondary of many

I just got an email from them saying, they are gonna wait for my summer grades to send me a secondary...

I like the way they are keeping up to date with us,

Yes, they are AMAZING at keeping in touch with you. Admissions is definitely on top of things! When I applied, I was very impressed with how quickly they reviewed your primary as well as your secondary and they also let you know whether you are accepted or not so much quicker than any other medical school i applied to. good luck everyone! you guys are definitely way ahead of the game applying so early. the vcom class for last year was full by january so applying early will definitely help you out.

i took the mcat today and also received an email from vcom-cc stating that they are going to put my application on hold until they receive my mcat scores...

I applied here... Got 2 emails, I hope they send me a secondary soon even though I'm retaking the MCAT. I have a score on my app already which I'm sure is high enough to pass an initial screen tho...

I would be absolutely thrilled to live in SC. I wanna get out of the midwest for medical school very badly.

any idea why we can only apply to one campus?

Got my secondary sent in! Letters sent in! Money sent in!

Although you can only apply to one campus, there is a place on the secondary that says you will be considered at both if you are willing.

I'm right there with you! Quick question for you though: when you sent your letters through interfolio, who did you send them to? Mine said VCOM-Virginia campus, but didn't have an option for the Carolina campus. I just went ahead and sent it to the one that said Virginia campus because so far it seems like the same office is doing the admissions for both campuses.

I did the same thing as you with Interfolio. I couldn't find any option for electronic delivery that specified Carolina campus, so I figured it was okay.

Awesome, thanks. That makes me feel much better.

Good luck to everyone! :luck:

All the best

I got my email saying they recieved my app, and that they will get back to me in 1 week.

Also, with the Letters of Rec, I called and asked b/c there wasn't a place on the Virtual Eval site for the Carolina school, so my health advisor lady person 🙂 called them and they (Virtual Eval people) are checking into it also.

Apparently if you've had a misdemeanor, like a drinking ticket or something in college (I got one my 1st semester) then they hold off on sending you a secondary until their committee meets to decide whether or not they will offer one... even if it's been dismissed... oh well

I dunno... my application was finally released to schools and I started getting secondaries today. One of the first ones was VCOM and I got an MIP my junior year.

Being new school, I do notthink they will diferenciate between instate and oos.
Anyone have any info on if there will be any regional preference given (I'm in NC)?

the CC campus has the same regional preferences as the VA campus, which includes the appalachian region. NC is included

Anyone know why AACOMAS only lets us apply to one of the VCOM schools? I've been trying to look at the websites and can't really find much. If I have to choose one, which one should I apply to/what are the differences between the 2?

You can only apply to one through AACOMAS, but on the secondary application, it asks for your preference and then asks if you would be willing to be considered for the other campus if your first choice is filled.

Most of the other schools of medicine are that way as well. Like you've got to apply to both Lake Erie COM campus and it's satellite campus in Bradenton, FL if you want to be considered for both. I do know that for VCOM, it seems like they want both campuses to be the same but just assist those who live closer to the carolinas.

Here are a few facts about the Carolina campus from the Director of Admissions:

We broke ground in February and the building will be complete by July 2011
Total incoming class will be 150
The building will be the same as the one in VA apart from the fact that we will have the OMM labs, SIM Centre and the anatomy lab on the 3rd floor
The curriculum is the same as the one in VA
We will have our own faculty on site, sometime there may be a need to share faculty but they will be attending both campuses
We will have a Vice Dean, Associate Dean of Biomedical and Clinical Studies on Campus
The same medical missions will be available to our students
WE have the collaborative agreement with Wofford College allowing the students to use the facilities on their campus
Our hospital partner in Spartanburg is Spartanburg Regional
We will have student organizations on campus. Initially we will not have the same number as the VA campus because logistically if we did this all students will be in all organizations
The admission process for coming to the Carolinas Campus is as vigorous as the Virginia campus and one will not be easier to get in than the other.

Thanks danznchandee16 for sharing this.

Anyone get any new update from vcom after they submitted the secondary? They emailed me for a copy of my unofficial transcipt like 10 days ago, and I received nothing else after that.

I received this email on July 1:

Dear PeachyPhd:

We are excited that you have applied to VCOM and we look forward to working with you in the application process. This serves to confirm receipt of your VCOM secondary application.

In late June, the final accreditation visit for the Carolinas Campus took place and the accreditation body will meet on the results of that visit. In August, upon positive review by COCA (which we anticipate), we will proceed with your application and notify you of the next step in the process.
. .
We are excited that you have applied early in the cycle. VCOM begins the interview process in late September. We will be in contact in August to inform you of the next step in the process.

Regards,
Bea

I got an email this week saying I was complete, but I chose the VA campus as my primary campus of interest.

I literally JUST received an email from them notifying me that I did not list my DO's year of graduation on my secondary and that I needed to fill it in and re-submit it. It also said, "Once this has been received your file will be considered complete and will be sent to the committee for review."

So it looks like they are starting to get the ball rolling and are looking through everyone's applications.

Hopefully we will all hear some good news soon!

I had to resubmit after forgetting something last week. Got my complete e-mail on July 8. It said

"We will begin reviewing completed applications in early August and will schedule our first interviews for early decision applicants in mid-September and for our general application pool in early-October. Once your application is reviewed, we will be certain to provide you with an update on your status."

So not sure if that means they'll hand out interviews soon for ED September and RD October, or if they're waiting for Sept./Oct. to start sending interviews.

I received the same email a while back. Were any of you asked for an unofficial transcript?

i'm going to spartanburg tomorrow to check out the wofford college campus that the VCOM building will be located on and to check out the area. Hopefully this will help with deciding on whether VA or SC!!

I don't think the VCOM campus will be located on Wofford's campus. Wofford is on N. Church street and VCOM is on Howard street

VCOM will not be located on N Church St. they are building on Howard St. right now all you will see is a bunch of dirt right now...

You can see the site on live webcam thru link at vcom web site

I apologize, i mean wofford college, in which VCOM is affliated. It may not be on the campus but since it's affliated we are able to use their gym, etc. didn't know you could see the building construction via web cam. thanks for the info!

yeah i log on and watch 3 or 4 white pick-up trucks parked by the smokestack every day.
