The social aspect of Pre-Vet has died. And while I don't play WW despite plenty of attempts by the old guard, I do love me a good book.

In January, I read Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, Of Songbirds and Snakes, and ACOTAR 1. For Feb, already finished Onyx Storm and on Hunger Games.

Jan list: Nobody Needs to Know by Pidgeon Pagonis, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. The Book Thief might be a bit too on the nose right now, but it's one of my favorite books. The end is horrendously sad. Read at your own risk (but read it).

Feb list: I'm rereading the Alex Rider series because I'm an adult and no one can tell me not to. I'm also waiting for the Handmaid's Tale on Libby because it's probably past time I read that book.

ACOTAR!! That was the first good fantasy series I committed to in years.

Favorite books of 2024 were mostly thrillers: The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley. Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera (baller on audiobook). The Only One Left by Riley Sager. A break from thrillers, The Joseph Bridgeman series by Nick Jones (starts with And Then She Vanished) for some fantasy/time twisting vibes. For nonfiction, Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann was sobering but insane (read it after I saw the movie).

January 2025 books: The Orphanage by the Lake by Daniel Miller and Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak were both great reads. The Inmate by Frieda McFadden was meh.

Currently reading: None of This is True by Lisa Jewell.

Audiobooks while I'm driving to/from school or cleaning the house on weekends are really clutch right now. I do have a stack of books to read physically as well, but the audiobooks really got me back into reading for fun.

Jan list: Skyshade by Alex Aster, Always Us by Kristin Marzullo, Sword Catcher by Cassandra Clare, The black witch by Laurie Forest, The Iron Flower by Laurie Forest, the Shadow Wand by Laurie Forest, Somewhere In Between by Krsitin Marzullo, and Artemis by Andy Weir

Fed List: working through Onyx storm, but I'm terrified to finish it

Your January reading list is incredible!!! After hunger games, you should read Throne of Glass if you haven't already

January: I didnt do any physical reading because I got so obsessed with diamond painting kits lol but I listened to 2 audiobooks! 1. Im glad my mom died by Jeanette McCurdy and 2. The Boyfriend by Freida McFadden.
Feb: I plan on reading Ruthless Vows (the second book to Divine Rivals which I read ~1 year ago but I picked up this book half off at Barnes and Noble the other day!)

I love Andy Weir's stuff! Let me know how Artemis is. If you like scifi, I think it's a smaller release but Colony One Mars (forget the author) was a good and quick read!

how was the boyfriend? I’ve been meaning to get into Freida McFadden!

I will definitely add that to my reading list!! I personally really liked Artemis because of the creativity, but there are some scientifically inaccurate things that pulled me out of the story a bit. I like it as a palate cleanser in between more substantial books.

This is such a good idea! I was such a book worm in middle and high school but fell off the wagon when I got to college. I have so many books on my shelf that I'm so excited and ready to read. Alot of it is like spooky, sexy books. But I have some non-fiction on my list!

Jan: none..

Feb: Men Who Hate Women, and going to finally finish "Priest". Very very spicy.

1. Im glad my mom died by Jeanette McCurdy
I don't read a ton (I used to, wish I could get back into it, still trying to) but this was such a good book. If anyone on here has grown up in a really dysfunctional household, it can be a bit triggering but was worth it for me.

The last good book I read was Where The Crawdads Sing. There were mixed reviews on it, but I genuinely liked it.

It was interesting! I like her books because theyre always such a quick read for me hahah. Nothing phenomenal but entertaining

I read a few Raymond Chandler this past Christmas and loved him. Hard core detective stories. A little bit limited to his generation but overall great stories. I started reading story of your life and others in Jan. It's been sitting on my night stand since...... since two weeks ago I think. But it is a very good book.

Did you like Onyx Storm?!

Totally random but how many of you were obsessed with the warrior cats series when you were young?
Did all vet-med people have a warrior cats/hunger games/divergent stage?...

what is this Priest book you speak of? 👀

Speaking of: TFIOS. Was anyone else forever changed as a child after reading that book? I'm getting the tumblr flashbacks typing this. Okay? Okay. The Hot topic merch went so hard

OMG DIVERGENT. sophomore year of undergrad I went back into my divergent phase and bought the first 2 movies on amazon movies and would watch them at least once a week maybe i'll reread the series now😂

Yes, also the Delirium trilogy. Kind of wild, but honestly I loved it at the time.

That book broke me

OMG OKAY SO! Priest is kinda cliche but it's ✨ sexy ✨ so I give it a pass. I'm not going to spoil anything (and I hope I don't get a strike or ban for mentioning these themes) LOTS of sex. Plays on morality and religion and having to decide between your faith and your desires. If you're into stuff like that, you will loooove Priest. There's a sequel called "Sinner" and a spin off called "Saint" based off a character in the original series.

My mom got me all of the books (at that time which was like 24) and comics ...... I loved that series. I was obsessed with how they used the herbals to treat their fellow cats (inspiration for becoming a vet? lol)

I can picture it now:

Admissions: "Which book series completely changed your personality and the trajectory of your life?"
Us: "Warrior Cats.."
Admissions: 'When can you start?"
All creatures great and small was the previous few generations. Warrior cats is ours

The themes were so intense too looking back I'm like wtf I was reading about cat genocide and the mandated killing of halfbloods. There was even death during birth with Silverstream bleeding out (I remember way too much about this haha). And murder and all sorts of other stuff. Illegitimate kids by the medicine cat!?

Also yarrow and feverfew are herbs ingrained in my mind from those books 😂

I read Onyx Storm in a day. A long day, but a day. I need to go reread to pick up on details and clues I missed first time around.

I’m currently reading Quicksilver by Callie Hart per an SDNers recommendation.

Onyx storm, but I'm terrified to finish it

You should be

Your January reading list is incredible!!! After hunger games, you should read Throne of Glass if you haven't already

I have not! Our entire staff are reading all these books and I jumped on the band wagon 🤣

Did you like Onyx Storm?!

Loved it, though didn't realize it wasn't the end. I got to 200 pages left and knew it wasn't going to be done.

Did all vet-med people have a warrior cats/hunger games/divergent stage?...

What self-respecting millennial didn't have their angst post-apocalyptic stage 🤣

I didn't get my copy for a week, and then had obligations 😡

I'm so glad to have found the other Warrior cat kids here...integral part of my childhood!

January: The Aurelian Cycle by Rosaria Munda (sooooo good - it is basically Fourth Wing but for those of us who aren't really into spicy books). HIGHLY recommend for the fantasy/dragon lovers out there.

February: I'm trying to get into All Creatures Great and Small but haven't had time with all the eXaMs.

I was a prolific Warriors fanfiction writer on fanfiction.net circa 2013 🙀 they're still making new series so every now and then I read plot summaries to see what insane cat drama they come up with. There's been some crazy plot lines in recent series (a medicine cat apprentice got TNRed)

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. The Book Thief might be a bit too on the nose right now, but it's one of my favorite books
Read this in 7th grade and it's been on my favorites list ever since. Might have to go revisit it rn with the times oof. That and The Giver!!

Heyyyy we've been reading the same things recently!

2024 Favorites were Wrong Place Wrong Time (Gillian McAllister), Hidden Pictures (Jason Rekulak), The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (Suzanne Collins) and In My Dreams I Hold A Knife (Ashley Winstead).

Currently Reading: The Only One Left and Middle of the Night (both by Riley Sager). I also am re-reading Atomic Habits by James Clear and just bought my own copy of How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie.

Waiting for decisions has been driving me crazy so I'm planning flooding myself with books this month 🤓 Next ones on the list are Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass #2, I read the series in middle school and am going back <3 ) and Misery by Stephen King. But I'll need more recs to get me through this season of waiting!

Shut up this looks sooo good! I miss the fantasy series that were about the actual plot and not the romances within them 😢 Adding to my list!

I'm so excited for this thread and to see what everyone else is reading!!! I mostly quit social media last year (except for SDN lol) so I try to spend my time outside of vet school mostly reading.

January: The Uninhabitable Earth by David Wallace-Wells, Earth to Moon by Moon Unit Zappa, Love Lives Here by Rowan Jette Knox, Animal Stories by James Herriot, Long Island Compromise by Taffy Brodesser-Akner, Future Home of the Living God by Louise Erdrich, Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer

February so far: Survivor by Chuck Palahniuk

Current reads: The Memory Piece by Lisa Ko, Wandering Stars by Tommy Orange, Small Game Hunting at the Local Coward Gun Club by Megan Gail Coles, The Emperor and the Endless Palace by Justinian Huang, Hear the Wind Sing by Haruki Murakami, & currently rereading the Attack on Titan manga

Favourite book I've read so far this year was Survivor. I try to have multiple books on the go at once because I'm a completely mood dependent reader and said mood honestly switches on me multiple times a day.

I read fanfictions of an anime called bleach in highschool, good times lol.

Jan list: iron flame (on going)

Been playing a lot of first descendants lately and waiting on the new monster hunter game 🤓

OH MY GOD BLEACH!!! I HAVENT THOUGHT OF THAT ANIME IN YEARS 😭

I was a prolific reader when I was younger but stopped in college. Now that I graduated, I'm getting back into it! I have two days off per week at my new internship, so I'm going to do a ton of beach reading when I'm not shell hunting. February is gonna be my nonfiction month, March will be for fiction!

January: Lessons in Chemistry, reread Fourth Wing

February: The Rise and Reign of the Mammals, On the Origin of Species, The God Delusion, The Selfish Gene, Braiding Sweetgrass

March: Iron Flame, Onyx Storm, Watership Down (originally read it in 8th grade, ready to revisit it!), The Promised Neverland, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen

Ouch. I read these on my 3ds that had internet connection before I had a smartphone lol

I remember being on the official warrior cats FORUM lol and would roleplay as a warriorcat there 😂 I wish i could see what bat**** posts I used to write. Honestly, a TNR wouldn't be the worst thing for a medicine cat I guess 😭
