VMCAS Questions and Rants c/o 2024

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
On the topic of prereqs-- has anyone heard whether or not schools care if you list/designate more than the required classes? For example, I designated both biochem courses when only one course is required. Does it just confuse the reviewer or could it potentially help?
Just put the one with the best grade. That’s what I did. Like if they require 3 credits of orgo and I took 8 (1 and 2, 4 credits each) and got a B in orgo 1 and an A in orgo 2, I just included my grade and course info for 2.

Quick Question: I cant find where my personal statement goes anywehere on the VMCAS. Could someone point me in the right direction?

The personal statement is a thing of the past. It’s been replaced with the 3 VMCAS questions ... future career goals, what you hope to contribute, and attributes.

I apologize if this has been asked already but when entering experiences, what do I do if I have had multiple positions at the same organization? For example, I was the president/secretary/etc. for a club over the past 3 years. Similarly, I also worked as a veterinary assistant and as a technician at the same hospital but during two different summers. Should I input these separately or together?

Input them separately and only put the number of hours that you held each position. So if you worked at place x for 400 hours total, put place x - assistant - 250 hours, place x - veterinary technician - 150 hours.

Thank you! But should I do this for extra curriculars as well? Just for perspective, I've had about, on average, 3 positions for each of the 4 clubs at my school. I'm not sure if they'll just view all of those inputs as repetitive.

Also, is it acceptable to switch between paragraph form and bullet-points when explaining my responsibilities? I find that it's easier to use one structure for some things and vice versa.

So I know that you split up vet/animal/research hours depending on your position. It looks like you can do the same for extracurriculars. Although I seem to remember there being a thing where you enter in your club and which years you were in it, and then in the description I just entered when I was on the executive board. For example, XYZ A Cappella - Fall 2016 to Spring 2018. (Then in description) Assistant Musical Director from Fall 2017 to Spring 2018. That made it flow a little better in my opinion.

I would be consistent with your format, like ski said. Treat it like a resume almost. You wouldn’t submit a resume to a potential employer with several different formats. You want everything to be cohesive and to have a natural flow to it. It makes you seem more organized and professional.

I need help classifying an experience in VMCAS. For the last 7 years I’ve been on the board of a non-profit that provides funding towards non-routine veterinary treatment for dogs whose families can’t afford it. I work with applicants directly, which also requires me to correspond with their veterinarians. It’s a national organization so I’ve worked with people all over the country. I wouldn’t classify it as veterinary experience because it’s not under the direct supervision of a vet but I also wouldn’t classify it as animal experience because I don’t do anything with the dog directly. And it’s obviously not research or employment since I’m not compensated. So that leaves “Extracurricular Activities” and “Volunteer (not animal related)”.

Thoughts? In the grand scheme of things, does it really matter?

I would say volunteer. It’s an organization that you’re volunteering for that isn’t part of the school you went to.

I am trying to write my experiences and wondering how people have formatted in the past? Should I just copy and paste my resume bullet points, but delete the bullets and change them to sentences?

For example: Volunteer ____
Description/key responsibilities: Developing strong skills in discipline and consistency in work. Gaining experience in hands-on patient healthcare, support, and communication. Growing comfortable with fast-paced high-intensity crisis situations.

And so on like that?
I am applying to MDVA and Ohio State if anyone knows specifics about that as well

Yea just put what you have on your resume. You can do bullet points or paragraphs but stick to one or the other. And I know this isn’t really part of what you were asking, but don’t say things like “growing comfortable.” I don’t know why but it just rubs me the wrong way. I would just say “handling fast-paced high-intensity crisis situations.” Be concise and to the point and don’t discount yourself. The former says you’re working on handling those types situations, not that you now know how to handle them.

Thank you! I was also wondering about how many LOR I need from a veterinarian? I know I can get one letter from the owner of the place I work at. The other relief vet is a complete jerk, and it would be a risk to ask him (1. he might say no and 2. his LOR could be subpar). Is one bad or do most places require two? I read on here last year that ohio state wants 2 from vets, but I didn't see anything on their website..

You just need to have what the schools require, and the most reliable info is what's on their websites. Checking Ohio State, they stated they wanted 1 LOR from a vet under their checklist page.

Like bats said, check what’s required. It’s quality, not quantity. If a school needs 1 from a vet and you get a great vet recommendation, that’s good. If you get two and one is great and one is bad, that hurts you.

Alright I looked through the threads so I am sorry if this has been asked and I just missed it! I am taking summer sessions and the first one ends the first week of August. I am taking physics and another class, so my adviser said to send my transcripts before those classes are on them in case they lower my GPA. However, if I do end up doing well and raising my GPA, can I send in the transcript again so they can count those as well? Or will they only count the first transcript I send? It would be a raise from a high 3.4 to a lower 3.5 which I know probably doesn't seem like much but if I pull it off that would help considering I haven't done great overall. It would also raise my last 68 quarter GPA!

Another question... I took the GRE twice: once last december and once in June. Both times I got the exact same scores with the same percentiles, so those are what I have entered on my application. However, since then the percentiles have changed! Should I change what I submit, or will they use the percentiles of how I did compared to that time period (three years prior I think? I am not 100% sure on that).

Edit: I did send my scores during the time of the second test (as in at the testing site when it offers for you to send free ones) to UC Davis VMCAS so they would have both scores from before the change.

Percentiles for when you took it, which should show up when you view your actual scores online. It’s based off of how you tested vs others at the same time as the test was when you took it. It doesn’t matter what the test is like now or how people did now.

Okay so that is what I thought, but my percentiles for both tests changed to the new ones! That doesn't really make sense to me but that is what happened... I am not sure how to go about it now.

Huh... well that’s weird. In that case go with what it says when you look at your scores.

Hi! How do you finalize transcripts and enter pre-reqs? Or does Wisconsin not make you do this?

You go to Academic History - Transcript Entry - and click Review & Finalize My Transcripts. I would think you still have to finalize transcripts even though Wisconsin doesn’t ask you to assign prereqs but you could reach out to VMCAS if don’t want to do it for some reason.

So I did that already it seems because there is a green checkmark by it and it won't let me click the button again. If it didn't ask for pre-req information, does my school not require me to do that?

If your school wants you to match prereqs it would be in the individual school sections of vmcas.

No, there’s not a prereq section under Wisconsin. If you go to UGA, for example, you’ll see a prerequisites tab.

Have you checked that you qualify for applying to each school? All the schools usually require you to have finished all prereqs by July if I recall. I have addressed this concern with you I think, but you need to make sure you are not setting yourself up for failure up front right now if you aren't qualified to apply.

ETA: Aha! Nevermind, you should be good since it is by spring of next year for finishing. Carry on. haha

How are people inputting shadowing experience? volunteer? And then under name, write the hospital you shadowed at??

I have helped with an animal rescue, but when I was in elementary school/middle school (fostering, volunteer); should I include that? or does that not count since it was years ago?

Hey guys,
I was wondering when you submit the main VMCAS app, can we put our GRE score as "scheduled" along with the registration code and come back to add in our score after we have submitted the VMCAS for verification? Does the verification process really take up to four weeks? If I submit it say 8/20 and they find something wrong with the app on 9/18 am I not eligible for any of my schools applied then?

Thanks so much!

From what I remember, you have to input your GRE scores before submitting. I believe you can submit before VMCAS has received your official scores, but I don’t know why you would do that if you have some time before the deadline. If everything is received but then a mistake is noticed after the deadline, there’s nothing you can do about it. Your best bet though it to contact VMCAS directly and see what you’re allowed to do. You can call them and get an answer right away. And remember, things are school specific as well. If one school allows official scores to be received in October but another needs official scores by the VMCAS deadline and you don’t have it in by then, you’re disqualified for that other school.

There also is no real advantage to submitting early. You MAY (repeat, MAY) get verified SLIGHTLY more quickly of you submit before the deadline. But also, I submitted 3 days past the original deadline last year (2-3 days before the new deadline) and was verified in less than a week (it might have only taken 3 days, I don’t specifically remember) whereas I know of people who submitted well before the deadline who didn’t get verified for much longer as well.
I know for med schools it’s to your advantage to submit ASAP since they have rolling admissions, but submitting VMCAS on time will not impact your chances since 99% of schools don’t even look at any applications until after the deadline (i know at least 1 Caribbean school is rolling, and I’m not positive that EVERY US/Canadian/European school waits to evaluate, but I can tell you that vast, vast majority of schools do wait).
If you’re taking the GRE 8/4, you should definitely have your scores back by mid-to-late August. There’s no reason that you need to submit VMCAS before then since it is an essential part of your application.

Also, don’t quote me on this, but the VMCAS deadline is to submit, not for verification.
As long as you SUBMIT by the deadline, you should be fine even if they find a minor issue. If it’s a big issue, like you have a required section of the application missing, that might be a bigger deal and disqualify you, but if you’re worried about minor transcript discrepancies or something like that, VMCAS will work with you to fix those. It could delay your verification which is kind of annoying, but for minor issues like that, you should be fine as long as you submitted by the deadline.
Again, I could be wrong About this esp since I never went through it, but that was my understanding from the info VMCAS presented and previous years threads on here.

or does that not count since it was years ago?

I included an experience that I started at the age of 10 because it was the family business and I still help out even now. I also included horse showing I did from 7th grade to the week before starting undergrad.

It won't hurt to put it. If schools don't care, they won't consider it.

I submitted at the rescheduled deadline last year and my verification took the entire 4 weeks after...so I highly recommend submitting early even if it's only a few days! It was incredibly stressful waiting for the verification especially since I was applying to schools that wouldn't send me their supplemental app until my VMCAS app was verified and officially sent to them.

Does anyone know what the character limit was for CSU supplemental essay questions last year?

Hey everyone,
Can anyone help me with the prerequisite entering part for each of my school. When I selected for example my biology series (3 courses from 3 different quarters) it only showed one course on the screen even though when you click into it, all 3 are selected. Is this the same for everyone?

Thank u!

Hey guys I did some dog walking on and off with a year gap in between. Should I just enter the same information in twice with the different dates?

If you retook a class do you have to list it twice? Like first time as 0 credits and then the second time as your real grade?

As in you audited a course for no credit? If it’s listed on your transcript, then you have to list it twice.

Hey guys I did some dog walking on and off with a year gap in between. Should I just enter the same information in twice with the different dates?

I volunteered with a cat rescue off and on for ~7 years. Per the advice of someone on SDN, I listed it once in the experiences section with the entire 7 year duration in the start and end dates then put the number of weeks as 182 instead of the 364 it would’ve been had I volunteered the entire 7 years. But I don’t think your way would be wrong either

like took a class got a grade but retook for higher grade since professor was inept and was fired after class. First time took it credit is listed as 0 though

Most (all?) universities have a student portal where you can look at your unofficial transcript. If it were me, I would check to see if the original course is listed on it. If not because the circumstances were weird, then I wouldn’t put both attempts on VMCAS. If it is listed then I would include both attempts because VMCAS will likely catch it when your application is being verified and that would be scary AF to be accused of academic dishonesty.

Ok sounds good can you list a course as 0 credit? It's listed twice but first time is 0 credits.

Hi guys! I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask thing, but I'm struggling with something and wanted to get some opinions.

I am a non-traditional student who was not originally on the vet path, and have been in a masters program while also trying to rack up some shadowing hours since switching from human med track to animal med. I'm low on hours and I know that, about 300 vet hours specifically, but have a pretty good mix of small animal private practice, shelter med, zoo med, wildlife rehab, and equine but because I've been trying to have a very diverse set of hours because of my shortened time, I don't have a super strong relationship with the vet I shadow with every week at the small animal clinic. She's very dry and a little hard for me to read, and I've been shadowing there for about 7 months but they've been training two new techs in that time so I mostly just observed them learning. I also recently interned at a zoo and only spent two weeks with the veterinarian, but they were in the middle of a research study that I was able to play a big role in and developed an awesome relationship with the veterinarian there in a short amount of time. He offered to write me a LOR because of it! I gained so much confidence at the zoo, that I have been speaking up more at my small animal clinic and asking to be shown things and it has definitely helped, but not as much as I would have liked before needing LORs. I definitely put this off because of my anxiety.

My dilemma though is I definitely know that the zoo vet's LOR will be stronger than my small animal clinic, but I feel like it will look fishy if I don't ask the SA clinic after being with them for 7 months and the zoo vet only two weeks, even though zoo med is what I want to do.

I'm trying to decide if its worse to have a "meh" letter in addition to the zoo vet or to not have asked someone I spent more time with and that potentially look bad.
