Two questions:

1) Which is cheaper?

and

2) What does your gut tell you?

They are VERY different in terms of curriculum (PBL vs lecture based), so that should play into your decision too. Congrats!!!

What is PBL? That is probably a dumb question but I am not sure who is lecture based. Please help me to understand.

PBL is problem/case based learning. So instead of sitting in lecture learning about the anatomy of the equine hoof, you may learn about the anatomy by learning about the relevant anatomy in a case of laminitis. Cornell incorporates a lot of PBL into their curriculum, while Ohio is more traditional, lecture based.

I would much rather have hands on. I loved MN but the weather is an issue and I loved the TN area, small class and the new equipment and facility. Obviously, I'm a bit biased to Ohio, but I can honestly say I love it here. I had a few choices in where to attend and don't regret my decision at all. We have some hands on in our first semester (we have handling labs for cats/dogs and cows/horses in our animal behavior class). Other than that, there's not much else hands on in the curriculum first year. Second year, there is a clinical medicine class where you go shadow in the hospital (not sure of specifics, it's a relatively new course). Also, the clinicians in the hospital LOVE to have you. I've gone over there when I have free time. There are electives (starting second semester) that allow you to get more hands-on hospital time. I took an emergency/critical care elective where I attended grand rounds specifically for the elective (case based), rounds with 4th year students, and did some volunteer shifts in the hospital. It was a really awesome experience. Also, I'm pretty SA focused, but I've heard the FA and equine clinicians LOVE to have students go and hang out.

Ohio is currently renovating their small animal hospital. It should be finished by the time you are in clinics. This summer, they are renovating our third year surgery space to make it more efficient and to accommodate the extra students (will be done by the fall).

Ohio has a pretty good caseload (30,000, I think), and has all the bells and whistles. The FA caseload is pretty decent (not sure of specifics). I LOVE that we have clinicians teaching us (I can count on one hand the number of professors that have been PhD's as opposed to practicing doctors). I think that makes a huge difference in my education, as they try to focus on what's clinically relevant instead of what's minutiae that isn't important.

In terms of FA, we have a satellite ambulatory clinic that you rotate through 4th year which allows you to get a lot of hands on FA experience (even SA people have said that's their favorite rotation because you get to do so much--usually it's just you and a couple of other students, and the clinician on farm calls). MN I'm sure has a higher dairy caseload. I'm not sure about TN.

I don't feel the big class size has been a huge issue. Just a few things here and there that I would like to change but are difficult because of the class size, but they're working on accommodating our needs better. The admin/professors are VERY receptive as to our concerns and try to fix things for us, which I really appreciate. The dean comes in once a semester to chat with us, and the associate dean comes in twice a semester. I'm not saying everything gets fixed, but they do take our concerns seriously and try to make our experience better.

Ohio would be cheaper for me because of the opportunity to gain in state tuition (OOS for both). My brain is telling me Cornell but my gut and heart are telling me to stick with Ohio! Such tough decisions! However, I think I would have punched myself in the face a year ago for "complaining" about this situation.
