Hey guys, I haven't seen many applicants state they are declining their seats on threads as of now. Was wondering if that may be cause it is a little early in the game. Anyone have any experience or knowledge on this 🙂

Wow thats an awesome thread lol, thanks! Doesn't help to much on my schools I am waiting for at the moment but its still cool to look at everyone's successes and what I can work on next year if need be.

Cool I found a couple people who declined Mizzou OOS, and at least one person who declined Illinois IS
 
Woo found a large animal vet to shadow from now through the summer :soexcited: His wife is a small animal vet too so I might get to work for/shadow her as well during the summer. Glad to have something planned in case I don't get pulled off a waitlist.
 
So if I can see the seating chart on the school that I am waitlisted at's portal fill up and over half of the IS seats are full, is that enough for me to still be hopefull?

Oh man that's torture! Are you high on the wait list? I have come to the conclusion that it is all a huge game of chance. The deciding factor, most of all is human nature- which tends to be unpredictable. The wait list could move a lot or not at all. I hate being in limbo.
I have already started bulking up my app for next year and am hoping to apply to more schools. I think it's better to plan for a different future and be pleasantly surprised if changes

I am so nervous I just keep trying to be hopeful but realistic... I am prepared to start a master's program this fall but I hope I am part of Kansas State's c/o 2020

I don't get to know my rank. There's only 9 waitlisted though, so maybe? But they did tell us that the majority of the class will fill up before April 15th. So I have to check the portal everyday. I have an acceptance elsewhere but since this is my IS and much cheaper, I'm going to wait it out as long as I can until I don't see getting an offer possible.

Aren't you the one who got an email from the dean saying an offer was likely? You're in a great position! 🙂

Keep your hopes up. If you're top 20 for K-State, you should have a good shot.

I am the one who got that email from the dean. But they don't tell you your seat number or how many people they have on the alternate list... But the email is a beacon of light 🙂

Patience is not my friend right now either! I am hoping and hoping but we shall see what happens. Your response from Kansas is wonderful and should be really stocked on that! I am totally in a black hole with no insight lol. I also haven't seen many people decline Illinois OOS or Floridas IS. I have seen a few people decline Kansas OOS on student doctor.

Yeah I have seen like 5 OOS rejections for KSU but I know they send out more acceptances than seats at first so who knows how many seats they have actually have come April 16th. I am just hoping for something. I am so tired of being on pause. This is definitely the most optimistic things have looked since I started applying for veterinary school 4 years ago. 🤢So my husband and I are making the move to Manhattan this summer no matter what happens.

Yeah that's how I feel with Illinois. They offer 120 spots and I have seen about ~15 OOS accepted and about 3-5 deny. So if that's my odds they aren't looking so hot! Lol, I'm trying not to count cause then I'll get anxious. So I've just been eyeballing and estimating and hoping lol
 
Lol yep... I have seen a few accept the offers a few decline the offers and a few out right rejections. So here is to hoping
 
I've seen a lot of OOS people decline their seat for Auburn and a few for Tennessee and Iowa but haven't heard of any movement for the waitlist. Just figured I'd let you guys know if you're waiting on any of the same schools!
 
I got the same email from the dean at Kansas State. I recently emailed him again asking how the admissions process was coming along and he said "the class is filling up, however I am still confident I will be calling you with an offer after April 15th."
So I probably shouldn't be keeping my hopes up so much, but he's making it very difficult to feel otherwise.

That is quite odd that the dean is giving a you that detailed of an update. That is unheard of at OSU. Hopefully he is sincere and not giving you false hope.
 
Anyone know how well the WesternU wait list moves? The WesternU thread here isn't very active, so it's hard for me to tell. I've read of some people who were called off the wait list in previous years (not many, though they may not lurk on here like I do 🙄) I know of 2 people personally who have turned down their spots this year, but I'm sure there are others. Plus they don't rank their alternates, so it's really is all up to chance from now on :nailbiting:

Really? With Cornell's reputation I would've assumed people would definitely go there if they could. Is it the price? I can't remember how expensive it is.

In 2017, I read they went through the their entire wait list and were calling people who had been rejected. Idk crazy

Looks like tuition is around the 50k mark, so they're midrange when it comes to pricing. For people looking for the cheapest school, this may not be their cheapest plus some of the more variable things like location and teaching style may have more of an impact on people's decisions because of the midrange price.
 
Maybe some people are afraid of ending up in what they would consider too small of a city? I do believe some of the Penn vs Cornell debates were related to SO job opportunities.

Reputations for vet school are overrated.

Pretty much every vet school will make you a good vet and if you're basing things on reputation instead of finances, family support, etc, you will be more likely to be miserable.

Yeah I know first, but honestly I'd assume more people would still put stock in it, since they definitely do with undergrad

People really put that much stock into undergrad rankings? News to me, honestly. I just went to a small, cheapish, no-name state school. :shrug:

I mean, I know a few vet schools do consider "rigor" in their admissions process, which may or may not include reputation, but I get the feeling that such a thing would be hard to define.
 
You know who puts a lot of stock into that stuff? Parents. Some employers. I'm still talking about undergrad here. Some vet schools do provide rigor points, which of course going to a named school helps. But for vet school? No. There's very little stigma surrounding name. All accredited schools set you up to be a great vet. What you do with your time there is what sets you apart.
 
I took 'academic rigor' to mean that they would rather have someone with a degree from a university over someone with an associates or just pre reqs from a junior college. The programs at universities are much more rigorous than those at a junior/community college, no matter what university you are talking about. They want to discourage people from taking pre reqs at an easy level.

I certainly agree with this.

I wasn't talking about undergrad. Some schools do put some stock into it, but some schools also accept that academic rigor can be accomplished at non-Ivy league schools and provide just as many points.

But for vet school it doesn't matter.

Every state I've ever been in with a vet school there are people there that say "x state has y vet school, I hear it's one of the best". Every SINGLE state.

No one cares.

The only time it really makes a difference? When the person you apply with went to the same school because it allows for some bonding.

If you go on cornells website they have an admissions formula and 5% of the formula is quality of academic program. So they definitely look at your undergrad to a small degree

Yes! Everyone thinks their state's vet school is amazing. There's less than 30, they should be good. I don't know how many people I've told "employers don't care where you got your degree from, as long as it has DVM on it." Parents/older family members really seem to put stock in the school's "ranking"

My friend just got a huge scholarship to Harvard med school coming out of Iowa State University! You definitely don't have to be from a prestigious institution to get into one. If you're a well-rounded candidate, it shouldn't matter!

At least you got backup! In state is obviously the best way to go finicial! But look at it this way, your going to start your journey towards school this year! Some of us don't have any other option than our waitlist. But I do hope you get off your instate! I'm also on my instate waitlist. sadly, instate waitlist don't move to much like OOS :/

Yup. I only applied to my instate and I am wait listed. I already have a file review booked for after the deadline. I am trying to focus on other things like improving my application, but the deadline is making me super nervous. Idk why. I am trying to mentally treat it like a rejection and move on, but eek!
I am definitely applying to more than one school next year. I am also tempted to go tour some other schools to see if they would be an option for me. Anyone else planning the same?

Nope. There's a ranking, but they said they review the list should a spot become open (which is pretty unlikely in itself) so I'm not even sure what the point of the secret ranking is. Crazy to think that the waitlist doesn't move at all, even though it's only less than 10 people. Shows you how good my IS is!

Does anyone know if Cornell has started to make calls yet to their waitlist?

In state waitlist does occur at times but is less likely. I'm sure at least 1-3 seats will move. Hopefully Some people get into dream schools and can't pass it up. Fingers crossed for everyone

I applied to a total of 6 schools, denied at 4, waitlisted at 2. Did a file review at my instate which helped a lot. Also did one at Purdue a school I got denied at. The file reviews help a lot, since it gives you an idea of what to work on. Went for an interview today at an exotic clinic since one of my downfalls was my canine feline experiences overpowering other animals. And also looking into community out reach and will be retaking my GRE.
