Waitlist movement c/o 2020

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I wasn't sure we're to put this exactly, but since you guys understand my wait list situation, I thought I would ask for advice here. My chances are very low getting off my IS wait list I am in the mid-late teens on the wait list. I am trying to decide whether to work another (3rd)year when applying next year or if I should do something different. My ultimate goal is to end up as faculty. I love research, teaching and patient care. It terrifies me because it is so much schooling and I already feel like I am off to a late start.
I was recently offered a graduate position (I'd probably go big or go home - so PhD) with a huge name in the industry I love and want to be in. So it seems like a no brainier, but I am concerned about starting vet school so late in life after doing grad school after working a few years out of undergrad. I know it's silly. I respect the hell out of people who decide to go for vet med in their 30's and 40's. It just feels so different making the decision to put off applying to vet school for 5 years. I really had envisioned my self trying a PhD DVM combo to lessen the time, but I have heard you don't really get enough time to focus on either. So do I do a PhD for 5 years, apply for vet school for another 4 and then residency after that? I know I have big dreams, they terrify me, but I just need some different perspectives on this.
Eek! This was a curve ball I didn't expect. My boss just sat down at my desk and asked when I would know about the wait list stuff. Then she offered me a graduate position. I feel like I was hallucinating... It was so surreal and I didn't expect it at all! What do I do? Pros, cons?

As one of those people who's doing vet med in their 40's - I say never put your life on hold.

I've done some really amazing things in my life, had two different careers, and am now in vet school at 40, because I said "yes" when an opportunity came along, instead of waiting on the sidelines for the "right" one. As it turns out, going through the doors that were opened to me, instead of banging my head against the one's that weren't, ended up being the absolute right choice.

Does my life look the way I dreamed it would when I was young and starry-eyed? Nope, and I'm perfectly ok with that. I wouldn't trade my crazy, amazing, wild ride of a life for anything. And I'm not done yet. Not even close.

So I say have faith and go through the door that is open for you. It will take you where you're meant to be - and it will be better than the place you thought you were "supposed" to go.

Amen!!

I couldn't sleep last night so I just trolled around on here. I found around 3 OOS that accepted and 6+ turned down OOS seats for KSU. I know you can't make any predictions off that info but it made me feel like there still may be a chance

Too bad I'm not waiting on Cornell then! Ah! Goodluck to those Cornell waitlisters!
I have a feeling that Cornell is going to start calling today. They always start to call on a Friday, normally the Friday before the 15th. Wouldn't be shocked if today was the day they begin. Also read this from a previous thread: "to whoever was asking about the waitlist: at the info session i attended last weekend, they mentioned that only 60% of OOS admitted students accept there spot. so there is a pretty good chance of getting in off the OOS waitlist, because about 20 ppl would decline their spot..."

My favorite is posting this link or giving it to someone so that as they read about all of the misconceptions they also get to see our reactions to how ridiculous they seem (the person and the misconception!)!!!

KSU waitlisters- I went through some of the old forums and tried to figure out how many people have gotten pulled off the waitlist from here over the last few years. And I found about 5 per year. So there is hope!!!

Psych!!! Wrong calendar

I really wish LSU would just tell me if the 3 seats are declined or just not claimed. I have to pay my $500 to another school Friday but they probably won't update that page to tell us which alternates are chosen until the following Monday. Ugh. $500 less on my end either way...

Call them?

Call them?

It says they can't let us know where we are or what seats or available or anything, we just have to check the portal everyday for new developments. But they can't say "hey, this is when you'll know." That would be unfair to everyone else for me to just know that.

Ahhhhh! I wish KSU at least told us how many seats there are! 1 is worse than 10 open seats

Ive never even considered applying to ross or any of the other island schools. I know several people that have gone/are currently attending over there but the fact that'd I'd be in a different country freaks me out! And since I turned down my acceptance at western due to distance, it wouldn't make sense to even apply to ross since the plane ride is about the same amount of time :/

I did not want to have to sell one of my kidneys for tuition expenses.

KSU sent accepted students an email yesterday reminding us of the deadline but also asking to please let them know our decision ASAP either way. Hoping that everyone replied and that it speeds the waitlist process up for you guys!

Good luck!

Is it normal for schools to send waitlisted students their financial aid package/information? Or does that usually happen after you are accepted off the waitlist?

I think it may differ by school depending on the size of the waitlist. Some schools may calculate potential packages for wait listed students so that a new package need not be formulated upon acceptance of a new student.

Me too! If anyone has any info onto if this is a good thing or not please comment!

So I didn't get around to sending the letters until this week, but I officially declined my OOS spot at Wisconsin and my IS spot at Texas A&M. Best of luck to you all!

Thank you so much for the update! I feel like the waitlisters don't hear much in the way of progress unless you have access to a portal.

Where are you going to attend?

Have any waitlisters heard anything yet?

Did you tell them to post on the survivors thread?

Did you tell them to post on the survivors thread?

Okay, I messaged the people.

I really wouldn't get too uptight if people don't happen to post. I get that you're trying to centralize things, but it's never going to be perfect. The people who really care about school X are going to cover their bases when it comes to school X whether it's this thread, the school thread, waitlist survivors thread, acceptance stats thread, etc.

You can always bump the thread when more people get off of the waitlist too.

I will post if I ever make it off the waitlist! I am excited to get to put my name on that sucker!

True, I'm just trying to be helpful for not only this year but next years wait listers, you know? I find it really frustrating that there are barely any "waitlist survivors" for each school posted each year, when realistically a lot more people (even more SDNers )are being offered spots but never make note of it on the thread.
Since this is a one person at a time thing it is 10x as frustrating as the acceptance list which you can see when they send things out if one person posts that they received something. They'll be one of many. For the waitlist, each call is one of one

SDN is a very, very small sample size of applicants. What you see here is definitely not the majority of the app process. And that's acceptance, rejection, and waitlist.

Very true and I have kept that in mind looking through all the other forums. It actually gives me hope because if you see two updates you can think there was realistically 6 or so. It has made me settle down at least because Dr. Elmore was saying on average they have to call 3 people to fill 1 position.

I'm definitely aware of the small sample size that sdn covers. Almost nobody I spoke to at my 4 interviews knew what it was.
It still gives a general timeline which is helpful and what I'm here for

Sorry! I talked about making on here before I made it!

But technically the point is that you survived the waitlist.
This thread however is more about fighting through being on it.

I think the stress of the last few months have started to catch me... I am getting a stress cold

I just cannot wait til Friday, if for nothing else to find out what number I am on the list. they said they wouldn't tell us til after the 15th

I think most schools are gunna start the calls week from today. I doubt many schools do any calls on the weekend- I wish they did but I doubt it

KSU c/o 2020 hopeful

And I got an email from Florida saying they will start making calls on Saturday the 16th 🙂 Thus, there is hope!

Hopefully!!! That makes me happier about it... I haven't found any KSU students that have been called on the 15th or on a weekend but here is to hoping!!!! That's the only school I am still in the running for.

Does any one know if you are offered a waitlist position can you defer for a year at Iowa or Minnesota? I would like to complete my masters, but if i get off a waitlist and cannot defer then I will drop out of my masters and go. No sense reapplying if I get in. Is this possible?
