Wayne State-Basic Medical Sciences (M.S.)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
it might not be a SMP but it sure sounds more in-depth than a typical MS degree.

the point of the SMP isn't necessarily to improve your GPA, it's to prove you can handle challenging medically-related courses.

I think that program looks good, definitely a lot more challenging and medically related than the MS I'm pursuing.

One word of warning- this is generally a 2 year program. Some people apply only intending to do 1 year of the program and then start med school. The med school admissions people claimed at a seminar I went to that once you start BMS they won't consider you for the med school if you don't complete the degree. Whether or not they actually follow through with this policy is anybody's guess.

I don't think that they actually follow through with that since I know someone that just graduated (today) that made a comment to me when he was a second year that he needed to finish writing a paper for the BMS program to get Wayne off his back.
My guess is that if you start the program they want you to finish it prior to graduating but don't really care when that is.
Of course it's completely possible that things have changed over the last couple of years.

The other posibility is what someone else I know did: started the BMS progam, decided she didn't like being wayned and left after a year when she got an acceptance letter for another school (as memory serves she didn't even apply to WSU that cycle).

A different thing to consider (and what kept me out of WSU's BMS program)...
if you end up not getting into med school after you finish the BMS program, just what good is a MS in pre-med going to do you?

and even more so... what good will it be if you don't?

in all honesty though, i do know of a couple people who got in using this program, so it seems to have some good use.

I did this program and found it helpful for the most part. I finished all the credits I need to graduate, but still have to write the final BMS Essay, which I probably won't do b/c I'm starting medical school in the fall and don't feel like wasting my money or time 🙂 As someone already mentioned, what good is an MS in Basic Medical Sciences when I will have an MD?

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!

I have a question. I am applying during summer of 2015, but that time i will have 20 credits but one of them is seminar, which AMCAs won't count. Will Wayne State University give me a override or count both undergraduate and graduate GPA? They said they will count graduate GPA if you have 20 credits of didactic courses.
