thanks for the encouragment 🙂

clinical medicine grades are out. They gave out 2 grades for class participation, 80 or 100%s. It's sad that I put so much effort in this class and I end up in the bottom of the class because my class leader thought I deserved an 80. When I did decently in everything else. I wish I was in one of those classes where everyone got a 100. I feel like I should complain but I don't know who to. This is the most unfair grade I ever got in my life.

What more did the people who got a 100 in your group do? Brown nose?

Since I'm not in Detroit right now..I'm clueless...are the grades posted up near conjoint, or did you receive them by mail? (some second years mentioned that we would be getting our grades through the mail)

Also, were the scores worth 25% each (2 exams, participation, and the OSCE)?

Also, what was the class average? Thanks a lot.

class average was 89%, and each exam was worth 25%, class participation was 25%, and osci was 25%. And the grades are posted right by conjoint.
More then half the class got 100%s for class participation, so that brought my grade down. I think all you needed to do to get that 100% was join an easy group.

Shangal,
I hope that all those 100%s on the “class participation” part don’t end up burning me (sorry that they burned you); did you happen to notice how the class did in general on the OSCE?

I talked to Ms. Conners today and she said that we will receive a breakdown soon and also we get to see the evaluation forms on us from our small group leaders.

wow...even with all this time off, I'm still a slob. I think I've got at least 6 loads of laundry to do this weekend. I guess should do something huh?

I just got a "student a/r check" for $50.00 in the mail from Wayne State. Do you have any idea what that's for? (I'm just entering 2nd year btw).

Same here. I'm assuming its for drinkin'. How nice of them to think of us.

No clue what it is for...but I cashed that thing right away, just in case they change their minds!!!

Any of you guys started calling yourselves second years yet? It feels weird being in this limbo btwn year 1 and 2... I keep telling people at the hospital that I'm a first year b/c it feels too weird to say I'm a year 2 yet.

I agree - it just doesn't seem right to call myself a second year, yet. Especially after the amount of time I spent grumbling about those annoying second years and their bad advice. I will probably start calling myself a second year sometime in late July (like the day before classes start up).
I have been using the line that "I have just finished (or, depending on the audience, survived) my first year"

Talked the the counselor the other day, and she said I along with others who aren't questionable grade-wise have been promoted.

So, I'll just be calling myself a 2nd year.

No such luck.
But we do get to escape from Scott Hall at the end of the year (to the joy of studying for boards) a week before you do.

I wonder what they consider to be “questionable grade-wise”. Does anybody know? My impression was that it was fairly straightforward; either you passed or you didn’t.

Did any other memebers of the class of 2008 on this list NOT get this check? 😕
Or is it that WSU just doesn't like me?

If it was completely straight-forward, there would be no need for a promotions committee. I am sure the people who could be considered such know who they are. I doubt there would be any surprises.

And no, I haven't received the check either.

Maybe you overpaid for your admission/registration. I know that I had to send in fifty bucks to the school of medicine to hold my place for this year, maybe you didn't account for that when paying the registration bill? 😕

I didn't get the check. :-( It would be nice though!
Hope everyone is having a GREAT summer break!

Here's my thoughts.

Since we seem to have some regular WSU SOM posters on here I thought about making a thread where we could discuss classes, bash prof's, and generally let off steam...without a title on the thread that leads everyone to believe that WSU sucks.

What do ya'll think? Well I know what I think...

So let the debate/ranting/questions begin!

hi guys,

i am going to be a first year medical student at wayne this august and i am looking for housing. i was thinking about living at chatsworth towers since its not too expensive. do you guys know about chatsworth towers, is it clean, quiet, do other medical students live there?

i would really appreciate it if someone could help me out because i have to sign the lease soon.

thanks.

Hi

Who are you people???

j/k

Any questions about classes, activitives, going on medical relief trips, partying...I'm a bit disappointed in you MI's and MII's this year....just ask.

To TA: I will fulfill your dream.

As a response to the previous post.....not too many medical students live in that complex to my knowledge. I do not know the exact breakdown of the type of student that lives there. Possible Pros: close to the gym, "new shuttle that would allow you not to have to have a car"? - this just started this year and I have not tried it out yet, main campus activities, cost. Possible Cons: undergrad neighbors, interactions/networking with other med students.

Which lender did you all select for your Stafford Loans. Looks like I'll be walking out of WSU in 4 years with $123564 debt?

Medloans, Access, Salliemae

BTW, anyone want to meet up somewhere before school starts? Paintball in Walled Lake?

I could be wrong, but I believe Sallie Mae is a servicer of loans and deals with the secondary loan market. Whereas the "lender" deals with the primary market.

For example, my lender is MedLoans, but the servicer is Sallie Mae.

so when is our end of the year z-score grade coming out for us first years. it seems like it is taking them forever

I'm going to be starting at Wayne in August, and am just wondering what kinds of things all you guys who just finished your first year are doing this summer? I'm hoping to be able to either do research or go on a medical trip somewhere, so it would be interesting to hear what kinds of things you guys are doing.
Thanks.

I just got back from white water rafting in West Virginia and I plan on taking a driving tour around the hand of Michigan within a week or so.

I went to Brasil as part of an exchange program with their medical students.

Oy, summer is almost 1/2 over...boo hoo. How is everyone doing? I have been sooo lazy lately.

Glad to hear that I am not the only one that has been being lazy. Or at least lazy when I am not busy going to one of the multiple jobs/experiences that I was crazy enough to line up for the summer.

Really wishing that this summer was a bit longer - I don't have enough time to get everything done that I wanted to 🙁, and am afraid that some of my needed down time might end up getting sacrificed 😡 .

yup..can't believe summer is over. I won't be getting any downtime as I'll be working till July 27th or so. And since I have to be back down in Detroit on the 29th for late registration...I definitely won't have any time to "chill". I have no choice...I need the money. Grrrrrr...life...I hate you!

Hey guys... just wondering if there is anything we incoming M1s should be gettin before class starts? What were those good review books for anatomy? BRS, netters, and what? Will we need a microscope? Stethoscope? Oto-opthalmoscope???

thanks..

You don't need to buy anything before class starts. Wayne State lends you a microscope 2nd year, you don't need it 1st year. There are a couple instrument sales every year where you can get a good price on stethoscope (cardiology III is what most people get) and oto/opthalmoscope. Some people bought this stuff during orientation or before that and spent almost twice as much money. If you join AMSA you'll get a free netter's at the beginning. There are also sales at the very beginning of the year where you can buy a used netter's to use in the lab, so that way you can keep your AMSA clean of any dead body debris and juice. You can also get all your dissection equip at this sale and even used anatomy scrubs if you want.

If you're gung-ho about starting the year, you could go to the med school bookstore on Alexandrine and ask the people there about what to get to start the year. But the only thing you need before school starts is a beer 😛 . Relax, this is the last vacation you'll have in a long time.

I second this advice!!!!!!!!!!

Don’t know about the rest of you but I received a letter yesterday from the promotions committee welcoming me into next years second year class and informing me of my year one Z score.

Also, sometime last week I received my OSCE evaluation in the mail. I have to say that I was surprised that they were so kind to me. I really thought that I had screwed up worse than that.

Any of you that are not at your school year address might want to find a way to check your mail at the address that school has for that information.

Anyone going to that workshop on July 29th?

The emails are from someone named 'Street' so maybe check your spam folder 😕

June 27, 2005

hands on practice with resource material.

The program will take place Friday, July 29, 2005 from 8:30 am until 4:00 pm in
2268 Scott Hall. Lunch will be provided. Parking is available in the flat lot

I haven't gotten this either, it's a mystery, and from what I hear, par for the course.

I have received emails from Street before... it is referring to Dawn Street, a dean of something over there. However, I have not received this email. I would be interested in going... if it's not a scam. Although, I am suppose to be moving on the 29th. hmmm...

Check your email and see who it is actually from... inside the email it should say, "Street" <[email protected]>. I email [email protected] about this... so i will see what she says. It seems weird that they would want a copy of your acceptance...

I just want to make sure I have everything down... what all do we need to have done before Aug 1?

-a physical exm.
-TB test?

500th post, w00t.

Anywho, I think they meant they want an "acceptance" of the offer, not a copy of your acceptance letter.

Well I got an email back from Dawn Street and confirmed the program, but not why i some of us got it and others didnt.

So did any of you guys get any campus based aid? Are you taking out the full amount of loans?

Yeah, I got some campus aid from the Board of Governors and I'm taking the full amount I can now because interest rates are low (actually went up from like 2.5 to like 4.5% today) and whatever I don't use this year I'll just carry over to next year or use during the summer.

First year I think it's better to take out as much as you can (because interest rates will be lower now than in years 2-4) so you can learn how much school is going to cost and have a little cushion for things like stocking your apartment up I say it's worth it.
