WCVM or UCVM C/O 2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't feel as good as last year, tbh. I dunno, it just didn't flow as well.

Aw well I'm sure it went better than you think 🙂 did they ask about current events? My friend has her interview on Wednesday and she's freaking out about that of all things

Hey, don't worry. I know a few people who thought they totally bombed their interviews and got in. Only about a week and we'll know. My everything is crossed for you (and me too, obviously.) :luck:

Yeah, they did ask once about it. Not nearly as much about my experience though, which I found pretty different.

They will. Every interview I have had they ask how you keep up with current events... sometimes it's a pointed "How do you feel about X or Y issue?" and other times it's a "Tell us about something interesting that you've read recently" kind of deal.

I'm hoping for you too! You really deserve it. 🙂

I did my best and that's all you can do at the end of the day, I guess. No regrets in that regard.

Don't worry, Escalla! My friend was basically in tears last year after her interview (ironically, we had back to back interviews so I saw her come out of the room) and she dwelled on it for 2 months, constantly talking about how bad she thought it went...and she got in!

I don't think you can ever prepare yourself for how it will actually go, no matter how many times you interview. But like you said, if you did your best that's all you can do! The whole selection process is so up in the air with not knowing what they're looking for or who you're "competing" against, so don't fret!

I really appreciate the support, dls. Truly.

Gosh, I love SDN. We need a c/o 2017 with everyone. 😍

Hang in there everyone! You can prepared all you can but really you can't anticipate what they're gonna asked. I have talked to at least 5 people who were interviewed last year, my interview yesterday was nothing like theirs! No behaviour questions whatsoever, I have two international news that I was gonna talk about, they actually stopped and asked me to talk about something else, then they proceeded to grill me on whole bunch of ethics questions...it was really really bad for me, on a good note, I didn't freak out (I did in my head) so hopefully that count for something. Do your best no regret!

Ahh, current events! 🙁 Do you guys think that this site would be adequate, or is there anything else I should be looking into? 😱

Escalla, you can't really compare yourself with last year. Maybe you just had a meaner group of interviewers, who were purposely trying to throw everyone off, and purposely gave everyone really hard questions. You could have done relatively better even though it felt less fluid.

Good luck everyone!:luck:😍

I'm hoping so, jestry. 🙂

You don't have to get that scientific with current events. Just know what's been happening in the world lately. 👍

1) Probably. I don't think it matters if the issues are local, national, or international. As long as you keep up with something. One year I talked about White Nose Syndrome decimating bat populations in Canada, and another time they specifically asked me about SK budget. Just pick one thing you're interested in and can talk about easily. Don't try to learn all the stories happening everywhere, because honestly, it's pretty useless. They just care to see that you have some idea of what's going on in the world.

2) Agreed! I had an interview where they asked me something personal and I ended up crying because I was embarrassed. It threw the rest of my interview... I totally bombed it, and was mad at myself, but overall my interview score wasn't much different (slightly better) than the year before when I was wait-listed. (Strange, I know, but according to Dr. Grahn my scores have improved every time)... so all hope is not lost! You just need to get through this next week and a bit. 🙂

Last year I was asked for a current event I was interested in and today was asked specifically for a provincial AND an international current event I've been following. So every year it changes and I don't think they care what it is just that you have one to talk about and pay attention to what's going on around you..

Echoing this, Escalla! Don't lose hope. I said something wrong during my interview and I was so scared that I had ruined everything that I had been working towards but I ended up getting in. I really hope everything goes well and you get in this time.

As far as current events, I got into the habit of reading a news site every day and just paying attention to what was going on. My current events questions ended up being super easy. They asked me how often I read the news, what sections I read, and then what I thought about global warming/climate change ("Um... I think that it's real.").

Thanks, Braki. 🙂

I must say though, Escalla, I need to take my own advice. I didn't think my interview went as well as last year the more I replay it in my head.

I don't know if I'm just being harder on myself or if it actually didn't flow as well but the whole GPA being weighted 60% and me probably being in the mid-lower end of the group doesn't help me out either.

I have no idea that GPA weighs 60%, so it would be pretty tough for people who rank at the bottom half to climb up then. Not only one needs to ace the interview, but the other applicants need to not do so well for those lower ranking individuals to have a chance...

Totally understand. We'll get through it. 👍

I know it's possible! But it took me three interviews to get an interview score high enough!

It's not just GPA, remember. It's pre-reqs, best full year, and other university coursework (in a ridiculous calculation). It definitely is possible; my friend from last year did it... and then when I spoke with Dr. Grahn he confirmed that even the lowest ranking interviewer can do it. My friend had second round, probably just skimmed into the interview pool and got in first shot because sometimes, you just nail the interview. You can't necessarily count on it, but it is possible.
Regardless of anything, none of us can change it now. I wish it was easier not to stress out about it. We're so close, and that's terrifying.

Finally!! Did you all hear during our tour that decisions would be made middle of June-ish?

The portal says mid june-ish! But I wasn't told that on my tour... we didn't ask though. Although, the portal said interview invites would be out "mid march" and that came super early... so we can stress for the next 3 weeks 😀

A friend recently suggested that for WCVM the grades from different schools are ranked differently based on the general "difficulty" of classes at that University. I.E. lower grades from a "higher ranked" university would be adjusted to be higher. Is this at all correct?

On my tour he said first week of June, barring some system error. Last year it was around the 6th, I believe. 😱

The WCVM uses a calculation to determine your academic score... they convert things from other universities so that all grades are consistent for applicants, since every university seems to work with different grade scales. Whether they specifically consider what course you take from where is unknown to me, but that sounds fairly subjective... and unlikely.

Some American schools such as Cornell and UPenn consider how prestigious your university is, but I haven't heard anything about that up here.

I think the only difference would be that some schools use GPA and some use percentages. The only advantage I see is that if you get percentages, then 100% is possible, whereas a perfect GPA of 4.3 is only 95%. Then again some schools only go up to 4.0. There is no way or them to know the difficulty of your courses.

I was told on my tour early June from Dr. Grahn. And last year phone calls to Alberta residents were made on June 6th (I remember panicking coming out of my convocation ceremony and reading the Alberta people from last year updating on SDN) and then all other email notifications sent June 7th in the morning. So might be coming next week or early the next week if it stays close to the same timeline.

If anyone calls my phone next week that isn't the vet schools, I'll be rotted. Going to turn on my ringer volume 😀
Does anyone know what day last year the successful UCVM applicants were notified?

I just went back to last years thread to see if that could answer my question... it made me soooo emotional to read all you guys posting last year!! Such an emotional time of year...

I got my call from UCVM on June 9th, the day after my 25th birthday 🙂

I thought UCVM was before WCVM last year?

They called you on a saturday?? 😱

They did! I didn't hear by Friday so I figured I was rejected because I thought there was no way they'd call on the weekend. Turns out they will call on a weekend so never count yourself out until you get the final word 🙂

wow that's totally nuts! Shouldn't have told us that, now If i don't get a call by friday I'll sit at the phone looking sad on saturday too 😛

I think somehow Dr Grahn found out when Dr Cribb was calling, and made sure he got to the AB residents before Dr Cribb did. Perhaps if you get a call from WCVM first, you will choose to go there, by confirming your acceptance prior to even hearing from UCVM?

I was just wondering, for those of you who have talked to people who have gotten in, how many of those felt they had a perfect or near-perfect interview? How many small mistakes are generally permissible? And what if you happen to blank on one important thing? I know it's mostly about how you answer the question rather than right vs. wrong, but I was just wondering.

Yeah I think there's some competition there. UCVM also called me on a Saturday. WCVM had called me on Friday morning. I had wondered if UCVM had found out that WCVM had called the AB residents already and called them the next day.

Hii everyone!
I have applied to WCVM 3 times now with no luck, from BC. Im seriously considering moving to Sask. and applying as a resident. Does anyone know exactly what you need to qualify for residency? Do you have to work, or just provide some sort of phone/electric bill, or have a bank account?
Thanks so much!

I am not sure about the working part, but all you need to do is to move there and not taking any classes for 12 months.

No one I know who got in was 100% confident. You can generally feel good about it or bad about it, but it means nothing. I have friends who thought they totally bombed and got in, and others whose interview went well and got in (as well as not). Remember it's not all interview. It's grades as well as the general stats of the applicant pool each year.

I would double check any residency requirements with admissions just to be safe. I've only heard that you just need to move without school for 12 months as well, but it is the internet so....check with them if you're strongly considering it.

I need to take a sabbatical from SDN. I'm on here too much.

The waiting isn't as painful as last year. Maybe that's due to resignation.

you're over thinking this... like I am 😛 Try not to dwell! easier said than done.

I personally felt my interview went as well as it could have. I knew my weaknesses before, and we discussed them in the interview ... no large animal medicine experience, not a part of many clubs or organizations that I wasn't a volunteer for... but I knew that. and so did they before they invited me for an interview, so I don't know what they would have expected on that front. All the questions that I could answer (all but one evil one ahha. still rotted.) I felt I did so in a way that reflected who I really am. What else can you do I suppose?

Heather said they are getting more stringent with their rules on this. I'm not completely sure, but I think she said that you must have been living in the province for a year since the last application was due? So December from the application before... But definitely ask.
