WCVM or UCVM C/O 2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Maybe some others you should read:
"The Art of Racing in the Rain" Garth Stein

I've heard good things about that one, I'll have to check it out!
In other news, UCVM finally cashed my cheque as of this morning!!! Yay, things are happening!

This was posted by the Saskatoon SPCA on Facebook. Interesting, as I had always heard that dentists had the highest rate of depression/suicide out of the medical professions as well. Although, I can kind of see why Veterinarians are taking the number one spot...http://www.producer.com/2013/01/stu...ns-at-risk-for-mental-health-issues/#comments

While I am here, I may as well chime in too.

Applying: WCVM (Sask. resident)

Total # of Applications: This will be my second attempt.

Degree/Major: I'm an oddball..because I actually have my Bachelor's in Business Administration with a major in Human Resources.

Interested In: Preferably small animal. I have worked in 2 small animal clinics in the past almost 2.5 years and love it. I am currently a veterinary assistant turned rehabilitation assistant to a vet at the clinic I work at who just received her certification in canine rehabilitation and I have become so interested in that line of vet medicine! Another main interest is animal cruelty in laboratory situations. This past October I went down to L.A. to do volunteer work with an organization that rescues rabbits and beagles from labs involved in pharmaceutical testing, it was an awesome yet shocking experience to see how mentally impaired these beagles were due to what they experienced in the lab, but I had a good time showing them that humans aren't all cruel (and I have a major soft spot for beagles - see display pic of my girl 🙂)

Awesome stuff dls116! I'd love to go to LA and help with rescues, they have the cutest dogs! Good luck this round! 🙂

Looks like there's a lot of great books I need to start reading!!!! 🙂 And thanks for sharing dls116! This is our year, I know it! :luck:

We're almost to February and therefore closer to March! Yahoo! 😀

I'm a loser and I have a count down app on my phone... 34 more days til the first week of March!

 Perfect! I'm trying to squeeze in non-animal-related volunteer experience before WCVM interview time. There aren't many hours left in the week that aren't booked now...

June needs to hurry up and get here as well! 😀

Does anyone know what the rules are regarding full semesters (5 classes) with applying to WCVM? I'm just wondering as I'm in a challenging course, and I would like a high average this semester, so if I was do drop this course and only have 4 courses this semester would that be permitted?

They prefer 5, but 4 is still full time and acceptable. If one of your courses is going to potentially ruin your semester GPA, then I would drop it. If there's still a chance it's salvageable, since it's still early, I would keep with it. 🙂

Agreed!

If you're anything like me, you'll be making an excel spreadsheet of how much you need to score to still squeeze out a good mark in the class overall. 😉

I do that for every class at the beginning of the year - I love Excel 😍

ATTN Current WCVM Students:

What are some supplies that you should wait until you're in vet school to get? Does WCVM give you a deal on (or just plain give you) items you need?

Just curious. I know you get coveralls and other stuff at UCVM. But things like stethoscopes and lab coats?

Any input is appreciated. 🙂

I know they give you stethoscopes and a white coat at your white coat ceremony. Coveralls are questionable.

Im pretty sure UCVM provides coveralls, or has in the past based on friend's Facebook photos.

You'll need coveralls and rubber boots for animal production labs.

An anatomy lab coat, an old one from previous labs works well, because you won't want to ruin your nice one!

Dissection kit. Any kind will suffice. With the usual: scalpel handle, blades, thumb forceps, scissors (small pointy ones are good).

You get a white coat and stethoscope at the white coat ceremony.

And there are sales throughout the year for other things... Jackets, over alls, etc

Thanks!!!! 🙂 My bf wants to buy me a stethoscope if I get in (this year, next year, whenever it may happen 🙂) and I didn't want it to be a waste if we got one already. Plus I'm so looking forward to that phone call one day so I can go shopping!!! 😀

Wow thanks so much guys, I did not think that was allowed. I emailed Heather to double check, but yeah it's a Quantitative Genetics class and I'm just not getting it at all.. (ugh!) But I did really well last semester so I don't want to screw it up with having one class bring me down!

I'll be watching for when you get your interviews!!

I really hope I make 1st round this year and have the opportunity to interview in Saskatoon! Get a tour, see the place and if you're free, we should meet for coffee! 🙂

As a pick-me-up two years ago I bought myself a Littmann Cardiology III... and LOVE it. I would definitely not call it a waste... but I see what you're saying. The stethoscopes they give are just basic Littmann. And they are good. ...but it's nice to have my own, and it's all broken in already! Plus it has a reminder laser engraved on it... "Vet School or Bust" 😉

Ahhh, yes, I really want one of those!!!! But I feel as though my bf/family who bought it would be disappointed if I received a stethoscope later on anyways. So I might go for some compromising and see if they'll get me one when I graduate vet school (and therefore can have the prefix of Dr. on there 😉)

Glad to hear you like it though! I love your inscription! 😀 Is there any variation of what people should get if you're SA vs LA?

3rd years (I think!) sell stethoscopes as well... So during your 3rd year, get one and the funds go towards your grad fund! 😉 they sell them with 3 different heads, large, small or exotic I believe.

Ok, awesome! 👍 Large it is.

Hello all, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but does anyone know what the average grade percentage is for an interview is BC? Thanks!

I don't think anyone can really say a definite average, but I got a second round interview last year with ~83% at UBC.

Kermit!!! Haven't seen you around since the summer! Glad you're back 😀

Haha, I've been creeping ... I just haven't had anything important to add! =D

Hoping to hear some good news come March - glad I went through the interview process the first time, as I felt it gave me a better handle on how to word my experiences in the application.

How've you been?

Hahaha good deal! And I agree, things come so much easier once you've been through it. I've just been plodding along, counting the days. Wishing it was June already! 🙂

I KNOW. Not only for knowing, but for not waking up and spending entire days in a gloomy grey haze ... clouds and rain, every day.

Only ... what? Three and a half months to go? Doesn't sound so long when you look at it *that* way!

That is true! 3.5 months definitely doesn't sound so bad. But of course it gets so much worse at the end of May. 😉

Ughhh. I know. And when we finally got the email I waited like, a full 8 hours before I was able to open it. I was just like ...

I cannot ... deal with this right now.

But in the end, curiosity got the best of me.

Haha yeah, same. And the 'View Final Decision' button is just plain mean...

Thanks for the reply Kermit, was just wondering. Here's to hoping we all get in!!

Yes!

I think SDNers should get an extra bonus mark for their application ... our dedication to providing information to each other and researching our futures should be admired. 😉

Well you know, at least we have a rough idea that we're all on the same page about lots of things. I'm also glad to know I'm not the only obsessive near-psychopath about getting in. :naughty:

But seriously. Let's make this our year. (We're worthy! We swear!)

That panicky, annoying moment when one of your references hasn't submitted their reference yet....

I actually used two vet references. I found out you were allowed to as long as they're from different clinics/settings. So yes, it's a vet!! I've emailed a reminder and so did WCVM on January 30th sooo...

Yikes, that sucks - if they don't fill it out by Monday I'd give them a polite phone call. It's not even a long reference form ... it should take like half an hour tops to do.

I agreee! My one reference hasnt filled it out yet and she is my boss so I have left her notes and reminders everywhere! gahhh! Unneeded stress

So, I haven't seen or heard of anything from UCVM/WCVM about this, but maybe those of you that are currently attending or have friends attending could comment on this: Dress codes. Do they exist? Obviously there's a nice long thread going on about in the forum, but it doesn't include any Canadian schools.

I know it's expected at K-State that you "dress professionally" even though it dissipates after a few weeks.

Thoughts?

woah. woah. they have to be from different clinics?! I asked if two vets were ok via email back in like, november, and they just replied "yes" without any further elaboration. Now I'm freaking out!

Well if that's what they replied, you should be able to trust what they say! The people going through the references may not even realize it and I'm sure if they do, that won't outweigh what your references actually wrote in the reference letter!! I wouldn't worry too much. 🙂

Dress professionally. 🙂

Edit:Assuming you're asking about interview attire.

We had a lecture on professionalism and the prof specifically told us he put on a shirt and tie for that lecture to demonstrate professionalism.

For interviews: All the men who sat on the interview panels for me were dressed in shirt and tie, sometimes jacket. The ladies were either pant suit, or nice blouse with dress pants.

So personally I would mirrow what the interviewers wear.

By professionally does that mean like business casual everyday or can you wear jeans and nice tops, etc.?

240 applicants at UCVM this year. yikes, up from last year

Lame. 🙁 I do know a few people that are only applying there and not WCVM (which doesn't bother me in the least! 👍). But with UCVM, once you make the interview, the playing field becomes a lot more level. Not completely level, but you've got a good shot with a great performance.

240? Well that kind of makes me a little sick to my stomach, but more than half of that will get interviewed so that's kind of nice. 🙂 Dose anyone know how many applicants from each province there were to WCVM? (I'm more interested in AB, but for curiosity sake woul like to know other provinces)
