In your shoes, I can't say I would do anything different. After all, I've considered just taking the financial hit and going to Grenada/St. Kitt's if I don't get into WCVM. One of our doctors went to Grenada because for the life of her, she could not get into Guelph. She was easily the best new-graduate veterinarian I have worked with! (In truth, she was better than some of the established veterinarians I know, in many ways.)

Did you know they cap the times you're able to apply at 4 at OVC??? 😱 I was talking with someone on these forums that was looking at international options for Canadians and that came up.

I couldn't believe it.

I suppose I'm being a little impatient by jumping after only 2x of applying, but the added frustration of having turned an acceptance down last year has me analyzing how far I ahead I could be right now. I'm willing to apply as many times as it takes, but if there's something I can do to avoid these gap years, I would resent myself for not taking action.
 
Agreed! That's what I find so hard to deal with. You are essentially putting your life on hold year after year. Then it's all well and good until interview season hits, then it's even more stress! 😱
I had no idea that OVC had a cap... that probably explains a few things. We'll see what this year brings, and I'll cross my fingers. But I can't say I'm completely opposed to living on a tropical island during my schooling... The debt just scares me.
I'm seriously hoping this is the year. And also hope that I'll have met some classmates on this forum too 😀

You have no idea how much this resonates with me!! An option I thought of last year if I didn't get in was doing a half online/half on campus AHT program, at least to start doing something with my life as well as to get some practice with physical vet med and get paid a little more (not necessarily to stay an AHT forever - I would keep trying to get into vet med)...but I ultimately chose to keep working to get more experience, and the +/- $10 000 tuition for that option didn't excite me too much. If this isn't my year, I just know I'll have the what if thoughts about what I could have been doing for the next year while I wait to apply again (as in, actively working in the care of animals as an AHT instead of as an assistant). Fingers crossed this is our year! Ain't nobody got time for that self-resentment 🙂

The online program with practical summers at Olds College? I'm sure there are others, but this is the only one I know of.

I've considered it too....but then I'd have to live in Olds during the summers and that's enough of a deterrent. Plus the tuition, you're right, is a little much. I've considered doing a Master's online in Equine Science through the University of Edinburgh, but really just to keep learning stuff. I feel like I'm gathering dust....
 
So good news for UCVM interviewees....total interviewed was 128 this year. 😀 I'm so relieved that they weren't doing ridiculous increases. I was talking with a vet on the admissions committee about the process and they had mentioned it.
 
Really?? thats great news! I swear though, the dean said on the tour 190 😕 and I know I didn't mishear, because he even did it with math, he said 265 applied total and 190 got interviewed, and 75 didn't get interviewed, which was "too high". Oh well, I suppose it doesn't make a difference at this point anyways.We are either in or we are not

Yeah, I'm trying to move past it and think "what's done is done", but waiting is soooo hard....

I hate the post-interview brooding. Don't worry you guys, you can't change anything now. Plus, there's still round 2 for WCVM. Be optimistic, and relieved that your interview is done! (I say this... but I feel like THIS):

Haha, yeah my chihuahua perked up his ears for the first couple squeaks but then got bored with it! I love trying to picture what's going through their minds when they get that perplexed look on their faces. I'm probably biased, but I don't think he would be the Homer Simpson-sufer dude type - I'm thinking more like Wishbone from way back when. My other one...well, that's debatable...he's a bit of a helmet child. My girl is totally Ivana from the Suite Life of Zack & Cody. (Haha, please don't judge my TV viewing habits 🙂)
 
Hmm. How would I characterize mine? The closest thing I can think of is SpongeBob... only, he's actually smart. Great combination, that. Smart, and hyperactive. I'm so lucky :laugh:

I dreamt last night that it was our first day of vet school! It felt really realistic until Nancy Grace showed up to lecture us on a travelling school bus. At that point, I think I figured out it was just a dream. Pity...there was such joy and camaraderie 🙂 61 days, guys...that's all the waiting that's left to find out if we make c/o 2017!!!
 
61 days is both too few and too many days away... 🙁
 
I can't even handle that. I think I've been conditioned to being a stressed-out lunatic from March to June. I'm trying *really* hard to keep myself distracted... but class is over this week, and WCP finishes this weekend, so I know it's not likely I'll keep myself mentally distracted for long...
 
Been awful quiet on here lately! How are everyone's exams coming?

Going shopping for interview clothes this week... what have you guys worn in previous years?

I just bought a new pant suit this year for fun from the Banana Republic outlet. Previously had a suit from Mexx. Handy because I can still use the pants and blazers separately and for any job interviews as well. Main thing is to be comfortable in what you're wearing. That to me is the most important.

Though there were two people in my session at UCVM that I saw wearing jeans and a sweater. No joke. I wouldn't advise getting that comfortable. :laugh:
 
Wow... that's classy. I'd say shoot for *at least* business casual. The last thing you want to worry about is standing out because of your clothes. That being said, I have worn an orange button up shirt (with a suit) before because that's just me, and that was just fine. Still debating what I'm wearing this year... I have two suits. I think I'm doing pinstripe this year, maybe without jacket. Gotta decide on the shirt though. 🙂
Hope exams are going well for everyone. I have my first final tonight. :naughty:

I also saw a girl in jeans at the UCVM interview... I was 😱. There was a few with big nose hoops in too... not that it's fair that some people may be judged for having piercings at an interview, but I definitely wouldn't be one to chance it!

I also am wearing a pantsuit, just plain black! With a fun colourful top under 🙂

Thank GOODNESS finals are almost over! One more and I'm done by BSc 😀 Good luck to everyone on finishing up those courses!

I ran into a friend from high school, which was a surprise! I was in the "purple" group lead by a little blond woman haha

that's so awesome!! You totally should have! hahaha I guess it's not the world's biggest coincidence considering how this forum is FOR the western canada pre-vets, but its still funny 😛 I don't remember anyone being at the table with him, but I suppose I was pretty preoccupied with trying to decide if it even WAS my friend haha

That was definitely me last year. I couldn't bring myself to make an account, because reading about everyones experience made me seriously anxious. I'm not sure why it's different this year, but I'm over it. And preparing!!! Only 9 days left for me!

Also, it may be different for me because I'm on here all the time it seems, but I want to encourage you guys to branch out. We need more Canadians outside of the Canadian school threads. 😉
 
Is anyone else starting to freak out about interviews next week? I've gone through it before, I feel much better prepared, but I think I'm even more stressed than last year. Randomly feeling my heart beating against my chest, sometimes finding myself holding my breath so I have to remind myself to breathe...It aches that I've only got a couple days left to prepare, but it aches that it isn't over and done with yet. Just an overwhelming sense of achiness 🙁

Not this time around... but I've been there. I think I've just been through the process enough that I just want to get in there, show them what I've got, and be done with it. The interview doesn't stress me nearly as much as the post-interview waiting.

Yeah, I felt this way for UCVM so probably will for WCVM as well. (If they would hurry up and send out 2nd rounds already....)

The first semester was me just asking myself... Can I really do this??

There were a few tears, and drinks, but I've made some great friends, and we're all in this together. They were all feeling the same way. Sometimes I'm surprised that we were able to hold it together enough to still be friends.

Second semester... Was pretty much exams every week, except for two weeks in there? So my cortisol levels were high the whole time. Some insomnia but by the end I think the second final exam in, I just didn't care anymore! Just wanted those exams to be over!

Summer I'm working at the uni in the repro research department. I'll be doing some lab work. Haven't started yet so I don't know all the details. I'm doing an AI course to get myself dirty this week.

Hopefully everything went well for you guys who just interviewed! I'm up next monday, eek! :scared: time to review everything I know about vets/vet school again haha

Totally recommend the AI course! You won't have to wait until 3rd year to palp a cow!
