WCVM or UCVM C/O 2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Things might have changed since, but last year when I asked about it, Heather said one would have to have spent at least 12 months living in SK, without being a student, and that the latest possible month one could move and still be eligible was August the year prior to admission. So if I had moved to SK last year by August, I could have applied as an SK resident for admission this year, with the full 12 months being completed by the time the semester starts.

Hey guys,

So this may be the wrong place to post this - it probably belongs more in the "Rant" thread, but I feel like you guys may have more insight into this problem. I also apologize because the topic seems to be more on awaiting acceptances and residence... BUT I have to get this off my chest - it's a loooong story.
So... Last year I didn't get in so I called UCVM around this time and asked "What do I need to do to be successful?" and they told me to re-take my pre-requisites. So I made a schedule and the week before classes started I emailed UCVM again, asking if the courses I was taking were acceptable. I was not really given an answer, just a table with the courses they accept, with stats having "multiple options" (I took a biostats basically equivalent to their listed BIOL 315 option for Calgary students).
When I got the rejection letter telling me I had been rejected based on my pre-reqs, I was very surprised because I had gone back specifically to remedy this problem. So I emailed admissions asking what was up - I was told my stats option was under review.
I won't bore you with what happened shortly after but I sent 2 more emails which were not replied, so I called was basically told "The Committee" was still reviewing. So I went to my advisor last week after waiting 6/7 weeks, and she told me to email the dean/associate dean, which I did.
Tonight I got an email telling me that my stats option was not actually being reviewed because I had attempted stats several times (I have two 100-level stat F's and a C, but I figured a 3rd level biostat B would compensate, different course, right? ahaha, wrong.) and I was NOT EVER GOING TO BE CONSIDERED because of the mistakes I made as a 19 year old.
Ok... So needless to say I'm pretty angry and upset. Can they even do that?
"Sorry you were an idiot 4 years ago but you can't EVER make up for it - p.s. we're going to keep picking people who struggle to put cones together for 20 mins before they figure out they have the wrong size... But you failed 1st level stats as a teenager so that means you'll make a crappy vet."
Not to mention making me WASTE an entire year plus tuition. WHAT THE FRACK?!?!
Anyway, I just forwarded this piece of garbage for a letter to my advisor to see if anything can be done. Any words of wisdom?

*Pulling hair out*

Wow how could they do that to you?! When you reviewed your app with them and they told you to retake some prerequisites, they should have noted your first level stats and told you about their policy. But that's ridiculous, stats really is not that important. I'm really sorry about your situation 🙁 but definitely make sure you're heard and maybe something can be done

I really feel for you jmf391, I personally don't know much about the situation in UCVM, but I applied to WCVM and I am still being "punished" for mistakes that I made over a decade ago, they are not even pre-reqs, just classes from a completely irrelevant degree. In all, all I can say that's what we will have to deal with, I hope there is solution to your problem. They just can't discard without giving you chance to redeem yourself.

I'm super disenchanted with the way UCVM offers support for potential applicants - you'll recall I had some trouble with a course too, which they wouldn't comment on until I'd spent the pretty green on the application fee, as well as forked out $800 to enrol in the course. I can only assume that due to the program's popularity, they try weed out people by whatever means they can to narrow it down to the # of seats they have available. It's a crappy way of doing it, especially for non-trad students who aren't given a chance to atone for previous mistakes but who would make super vets (especially given their life experiences, determination, maturity etc...a vet is so much more than just a 4.0 GPA with a limited # of repeated courses). I totally understand your frustration.

It is sad that applying to UCVM has been made so difficult for you guys 🙁 jmf, did you apply to any other schools? Is that something you will consider trying next year if UCVM doesn't offer you a remedy?

Speaking of UCVM, how many people here are hoping to get a phone call this week? I assume nobody has yet since nobody has been making excited posts yet... but I'm just curious who to keep my eyes on for updates!

Hii everyone!
I have applied to WCVM 3 times now with no luck, from BC. Im seriously considering moving to Sask. and applying as a resident. Does anyone know exactly what you need to qualify for residency? Do you have to work, or just provide some sort of phone/electric bill, or have a bank account?
Thanks so much!

When I moved to AB, I changed my driver's license and needed a lease and utility bill to do that.

But I honestly can't remember how it was confirmed on their end, I just put my new address on the application.

Residency is determined by a full year to the start of the school year (Aug-Sept) without attending school during that year. So if you move before August you can apply next year as a resident in your chosen province.

I applied to WCVM and will be talking to Heather but I think I'm going to contact AVC and talk to them about my application/residency as well.

It just makes it easier for the admissions people to toss out good applicants based on those reasons.

I didn't get an interview last year because I have classes older than ten years. Yet had an interview the year before, with the same situation.

With so many applicants, those little things make it easier for them.

Doesn't mean they are selecting better applicants for interviews, as I believe they are passing up on a lot of good people. I know a friend of a friend who was wait listed one year, and not given an interview the next year. Of those 128 interviewed, not one for him! I know this happens at WCVM too, but there are so few interviewed per seat.

I think it is also possible to apply to AVC for one of their international seats by going thru the system they use in the US.

I'm in basically the same situation as jmf391. Made some mistakes right out of high school, and was not considered for an interview by UCVM this year because of them even though my current work is excellent (I'm non-trad also, obviously). I "might" have an extenuating circumstance for my past depending on how they want to look at it, so I'm trying again this year and going to explain everything in that last box on the application, and we'll see. I tried without explaining this year, because last summer I met with Dr. Evans at UCVM and she told me that I had a 50:50 shot of consideration without explaining since the mistakes were over 10 years ago, and I'd rather not go into the details if I don't have to since it's quite messy. The two points of this are, jmf I feel your pain, and if anyone has any words of wisdom or advice I'd love to hear them!

Just be careful Squeak, make sure they aren't telling you to invest money and time into something that won't actually do anything for you - they're awesome for that. So much for academic integrity haha.

What exactly do you guys mean when you say "non-traditional"? at first I thought it meant that you had an unusual previous degree (like business or engineering or psychology) that people don't traditionally go into in order to line up with vet med (as opposed to biology or biochem). But using it to describe your first year grades has me confused haha. 😕

The way I see it is the traditional student does the two years of UG pre-requisites, does well and gets accepted, or completes 3-4 years of an UG, then gets accepted.

Non-trad are usually "older" people who don't fall in that category. They could have continued on to doing a masters/phD, worked in the field, or something completely different then returned to school later in life, were AHTs then decided vet school was for them, career changes, those sorts of things in my eyes are non-traditional. The majority of students will get accepted with two to four years of stellar marks, and therefore are 19-22 years old when accepted into vet school. The minority are mature students, usually with a variety of experiences.

oooh that makes sense! Thanks 🙂

Has anyone else been obsessively checking this page to see if anyone's received any phone calls? Last year WCVM called the successful AB applicants on Wednesday, the 6th, and that terrifying 'view final decision' tab came to life the next day...so I've been hoping for that call since yesterday but nada! I wouldn't think they'd make the call on a Friday because I don't imagine them activating that button on a Saturday (if the pattern follows last year), and it would be brutal expecting all the other applicants who don't get phone calls to wait until Monday to find out. So I'm thinking Monday might be the phone call day. If you think that's bad, you should see how I analyze boys.

2nd round interviews were a week late this year, so we might be looking at mid next week.

Try not to stress out too much...but I totally get where you're at right now. 🙂

You guys should be expecting to hear tomorrow, that's what heather told my friend. Their committee met yesterday, so it's just a matter of getting all the decision letters ready. I'd say either tomorrow or Monday

LOL analyze away! I do it too!

Good luck guys! I'll be watching and waiting for the good news!

Hahaha I totally analyzed it the same way!!

So does only Alberta get phone calls from WCVM? (I assume because UCVM also calls)
So BC should know when the status button is enabled, correct? Which might be a day after Alberta's phone calls from what you guys have said

Yes, last year successful Alberta applicants were called and then the next day, Heather sent out emails to everyone saying to check the online application for the decision. Not saying they'll do it exactly the same this year but it's likely. It would be nice to find out tomorrow, though, so I don't have to have it on the back of my mind all weekend (although, I would prefer good news so that I'm not sulking all weekend either - haha).

Haha my thought process exactly!

Tues June 4th: Hmmm, last year it was the first wednesday of June so maybe it's coming tomorrow!
Wed June 5th: Checking email obsessively. (When it became pretty obvious that I wasn't getting anything that day), hmm maybe it's the 6th of June, so it'll come tomorrow.
Thurs June 6th: ... haha well it still didn't come.

I'm out of theories now. 🙁 Will just have to wait patiently.

Yeah, I sent Heather a message yesterday, and she told me that they were on schedule to send out letters today or Monday. I haven't heard anything about getting called though, but that would be great.

Thanks! I agree, I would prefer to know sooner rather than later!
I'm glad that everyone gets to know about the same time for the other provinces, though. I would rather know bad news at the same time than hear good news from other people and wait expectantly...
But checking my email throughout the day is a little tiring.

check your WCVM application everyone!!!!! I got in!!!!!

Congrats!!!!!!! 😀 :hardy: 👍 :woot:

Unfortunately, it looks like my ranking dropped from last year. Waitlist to no waitlist. 🙁 Waiting on UCVM before deciding what to do.

I'm so sorry, Escalla. How many applicants were there this year?

Congrats maplegal, I'm sorry escalla 🙁

Haha, I can't check mine at work - LUCKILY I KNOW WHAT IS SAYS SO I DON'T CARE MUAHAHAHA

Congrats MapleGal!

Escalla, I'm sorry - I know that feel, bro. Hoping you hear something good from UCVM!

Its a no for me AGAIN. With the same ranking and only feedback is to perhaps try to increase my GPA to hopefully increase my chances for next year.

Weird, when last year at this time I asked Heather if I should go back to school to help my chances and was told to not bother.

Just grumpy and frustrated, as you can tell.

Awwww, I'm sorry dls. 🙁 I feel your frustration. My feedback is the same as last year....it's like they didn't even take into account all of the extra experiences I added since the last application cycle.

I was really hoping we'd all make it this time & be class mates. We'd be like the cool SDN clan. I'm so sorry 🙁

That's exactly how I feel.

I'm debating traveling back and sitting down with them to really have a discussion about it. I mean, I know my interview didn't go as well, but they should still be taking an objective view of my experiences. I got the same line about school too. Are you thinking of doing a review?

We have to accept/decline by June 11, so UCVM should be making their calls pretty soon!!!

UCVM doesn't like being outdone - I'd expect them to be calling today, haha.

21 --> 48. Quite the drop! Hahah (I got it emailed to me)

Oh and if you don't get an interview you get the most useless feedback ever

JUST FYI

Congrats guys! See you in August. Time will really fly by for you; I can't even believe I've been here for 3 years already.

I'm sorry Escalla. 160 applicants from Alberta is crazy high. I hope if you go in and talk to them you can get some more answers.
