Western/COMP Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are anyone else's letters still not uploaded? I've called twice and both times they said they had my letters and would update the website but they haven't. I submitted the secondary over a month ago. At this point I'm assuming it's okay, as long as they say they have them.

Hey guys, I heard that there is a deadline to turn in secondary for Western? Is it true? If you miss the deadline, will they not look at your file any more?

I asked the Western people about that, and the lady said (i forget her name) that they'll still review it; they encourage applicants to turn it in within the 30 day period so it gets reviewed in a timely manner. So from what I could gather, the only adverse effect you'll incur is having your application reviewed later than it would have been. How much later depends on the current volume of applications.

Has anyone heard from either Western campus as to when they were going to start sending interviews? I heard beginning of September and I am obsessively checking my email!

thanks guys, i guess my application will get reviewed a little later than i hope... more waiting for me....

Hey everyone!

I'm a first year at Western. I'd love to answer any questions you might have about the program or the campus or anything else. I've only been here for a month, so there's a lot I've yet to experience, but I have been through the process and could hopefully give back something. I know I benefited tremendously from SDN when I was applying.

I know nothing about admissions, but I do remember the first interview date being in the second/third week of September last year.

Good luck! 👍

Hey Ibn, I remember you and JediZero from the 09-10 WesternU thread. Thanks for all the input and advice you gave! How's the anatomy block going for you?

At WesternU's Preview Day, Susan Hanson said that interviews would start around 3rd/4th week of September.

Wow. If interviews are really that soon, it's crazy they haven't sent any invites. I hope that means we'll hear something today! Thanks for posting the info.

Well, SDN only represents a mere fraction of the whole WesternU applicant pool. I wouldn't be surprised if SDNers haven't heard anything yet.

This has got to be the latest Western has started handing out invites. I'm thinking early next week is when we'll get them.

I hope so. It sucks that they are sending them out so late, because now it is going to be more difficult to schedule them... If I even get an invite. 😉

Damn, considering its getting well into Sept already they must be planning on handing out the early interviews to local people. <2 weeks to get flights, hotels, cars, etc. is pretty ridiculous for OOSers who would have to travel across the country.

Hey guys, any advice would be great

The part of the secondary for "research/volunteerism" is putting me in a horrible position. For the doctors shadowed part, I have only DIRECTLY shadowed one D.O for one day. While almost ALL of my other volunteer positions have allowed me to regularly be in contact with MD doctors, I cant put them down obviously because I have no idea what the doctors names and contact info are.

Should i not bother with the secondary or what? Cuz it will look horrible with only a D.O for ONE day...but thats not the case

Any ideas?

Thank you so much, I respect your opinions

Did you do the shadowing through one hospital? If so, who put you in contact with all the different physicians? This person can most likely be listed as a contact, then you can list the variety of specialties and the hours spent, etc., with doctors through the one contact. That's what I would do.

my coworker did, scheduled for some time in october. still waiting for mine :xf:

Very good to hear! At least they're getting started. And looks like DbDan was right, they're starting with in-staters. So hopefully next week the rest of us will hear something!

Didn't get an invite to ccom, dmu, or pcom (yet). A lot is riding on getting this western invite :xf:

1. Being in direct contact and shadowing are two different things.

2. I was accepted with shadowing an MD 3 times (he was my adviser in grad school), for a total of less than 10 hours (basically he took me on his normal rounds).

3. I didn't have any DO shadowing.

So, 1 day with a DO isn't the best, but most likely isn't a deal breaker.

I got an interview invite yesterday - by phone. Interview is September 23 - I was very surprised by how soon it is!! Not much notice, and I do have to fly there.

Congrats seegoods!! May I ask when you were complete? And did your status change before or after you got the call?

I'd appreciate this info too. Writing my essays now, and there's a big difference between page per prompt and one page for all 4. Thanks!

So this may be a little late for some, but figured I would post it for those just now doing their secondaries. I too had the one page vs. one page per essay question and emailed the admission folks. She responded within 2 hours and wrote that ".Each box allows for 32,000 characters for you to answer each question." Good luck all! I'm pulling for at least an interview at one of the campuses. Lebanon is my first choice!.

What is the answer to that? I can't find it in the other thread you are talking about!! Do all questions need to fit on one page? I was trying to make each essay about as long as all my others have been (approx 2000 characters).

Nvm this got answered in the Secondary Applications thread 🙂

This extra question on why I want to study and participate in clinical experiences in southern CA is annoying. I can't think of anything significant to say, only "its warm." haha...

Just saw this....oops!! That is a lot of space!! My answers are not nearly that long! Do you think that is bad? I feel like I said what I needed to say in 300 words...

I was complete 7/26 as well (letters were marked received that date) and I've heard nothing. It seems that very few people have actually gotten word thus far.

email came from western today about interview info for all those waiting to hear from them. =]

good luck to the rest!

Congrats. Out of curiosity why is UCD the only UC you applied to? With a 3.5/34 you've got an outside chance at most the UCs 😕

Seegoods: lol that's funny. we must be similar applicants

DBdan: I also applied to UC Irvine, I really don't want to go to UCSD and I figured I didn't have a chance at UCSF or UCLA

Just got a call today for interview on 9/23. Could they not tell me sooner? That's in 5 days and i'm OOS. No way I can get a ticket without paying heaps of money. Oh well, looks like I'll just have to call back and schedule for next month.

Ahh, I was complete on 08/26..I guess I just have to wait longer..🙁

They seem to be processing applicants slower this year, either that or there aren't as many SDNers applying to Western this year. For anyone who is interested, i think they hold interviews infrequently. It seems like 1-2 Thursdays a month and maybe a Saturday. I had to decline earlier spots b/c I already have interviews elsewhere.

For those of you that interviewed yesterday, how was it?

I got an interview invite today! I receieved a call. The available dates were October 7 and November 4. They only interview 3 times a month. Since I will be in Florida until the october 9th. I choose the November 4th.
