Um, well...I'm going because
1) I really like the structure of their program, which seems to be a good fit for my learning style
2) It would be a real bear to move my critters to the Caribbean
3) I wasn't accepted to either Penn or Davis (I didn't apply to them, either)
4) I look at tuition as a "suck it up and deal" sort of thing

As far as I know (or remember), they don't touch the waitlist until after the 15th (now 17th this year). We got an email saying that they won't cash deposit checks until after the 17th, so at that point I imagine they would go to the waitlist for unfilled seats.

I am rooting for you, FTB!

How will you pay back your loans and also have money for food on a vet salary? Assuming you have to get loans. Some people do not.

I couldn't do it....

It's fine that you feel that you would be unable to do this, but it's really not ok to (in a way) bash one's decision to attend said institution. Penn's OOS tuition is $8k less. Davis OOS tuition is $3k less. Whoo...big savings!!!🙄

I guess a better way to phrase the question is: how the hell does anyone pay for anything?
My answer is: you suck it up, and budget, and live within your means. It's what I've done all this time, and I will continue to do so.

Again, not trying to be ****ty. But your post came across as, "Eeeeeewww...WHY would you want to go THERE?!!?" And maybe that wasn't your intent. Or maybe it was. I don't know.

And maybe I have to take out loans. Or maybe I don't. We just don't know...😉

I agree. This is a page for Western enthusiasm, not bashing. And Marsala, we support your veterinary ambitions ANYWHERE you go. Western is an excellent school. They have loads of people uber excited for you. <3

Are you planning on only applying to Davis? I know that I had very little hope of getting in. I'm just lucky I did. It's not an easy cakewalk, and it's ridiculously hard for OOS like Marsala.

CSU is 50k + a year, and if Davis wouldn't have accepted me and if I'd gotten off the waitlist to CSU, you'd bet your butt I'd be there. And i know of many others that would. I have no idea where you get that COA upenn is so cheap/cheaper than western. I don't think you can judge people on this issue, especially since you have yet to apply.

Wow, calm down please. I was more saying the state of tuition for vet school in general was ridiculous, not only at western, but everywhere. It's not like you'll be paying 188k in tuition and are gonna have a salary like that when you start practicing like a human physician would, or if you ever will in the veterinary profession. Sorry you thought I was ewwww-ing western, I was wowwww-ing the astonishing amount of tuition cost, and since it is also a school of pharmacy, osteopathy, pa etc etc, its crazy for that rate of tuition when you compare what you'll be making to your fellow students at that univ.

Yea tuition is a suck it up and deal crapshoot, but if you can't find a job, or afford your bills, then saving up to 8k a year would matter to me. But maybe that's just cause I started paying a quarter of my grandparents mortgage since I was older enough to work. Money matters, and no way in hell am I gonna put my future kids or husbands in danger of not being able to eat so I could borrow 188k for tuition alone, when the odds that my ass won't be able to find a job, are kinda high. I put my family above my dreams, and will choose being practical when its all said and done.

I'm fairly aware that getting into Davis is not a cakewalk, not sure when I ever said it was but okay. Yep, its the only place I'm gonna apply, if I dont get in after applying twice, then at least I tried. I am not able to move away for vet school, and that's just the way it is.

Nope, haven't applied yet, been too busy taking care of fam members the past 7 years to finish school, now they are dead so here I am.

Again, wasn't bashing western, was saying the tuition is way over priced, and yea this is a support for the western students, but I saw the post about tuition being raised, and was in shock. 3 of my veterinarian coworkers actually have told me if they were starting school today, they wouldn't go to vet school cause they would be paying it off the rest of their lives.

Anyway. Good luck, peace.

Oh, and my vet went to Penn, so that's how I was told it was cheaper. It's also on the website. Adios

I remember it being not MUCH cheaper. Living in Philly isn't very cheap.

But the way you made it sound in your post, you made everyone out here to be nutcases. Yes, I agree, it's outrageous to be paying this much, but your (and my) vets went to school when tuition cost 8k a semester in '94. I understand what you were trying to accomplish, but alas, like many things on the Internet, it came out wrong.

And no, I was just pointing out you hadn't gone through the process, so your viewpoint is different than ours, and definitely different from people who HAVE applied multiple times. My point was not a - why haven't you applied yet what have you been doing in your life. So please don't bite MY head off.

Ever think about going into a more lucrative career then instead of wasting your time applying to vet school? Just curious since you mentioned the large debt with a small salary to pay it back, if any job at all.

Haha is this a question directed at all of us?

Mind you, my cousin was a promoter, living in a mansion, making 90k. Went to my aunt's house tonight to find he moved back home, is unemployed, and is in hiding from this dude who runs THE "family business".

Thought this was too funny NOT to share!!!!

It was directed at bayarea's comments. I am going to Western no matter how much debt I will be in. It's worth it since I will be a vet!!! : )

No, the vet from Penn went in the 2000's. The other vet graduated in 2007, and the 3rd in 1985. One who graduated in 2004 said it sucks cause you will want things you won't have money to buy, like a house, or a wedding. Just sayin.

I don't need a lucative career, but I'm also practical, and I don't want my kids to be living off pork and beans cause I'm paying a mortgage and school loans.

Not biting anyones head off, if I was, it would be way more obvious. Not responding anymore.

I'm not attacking you with this question, I'm seriously curious.

You are trying to get into vet school right? Will you be taking out loans? It almost sounds like you are against going to vet school because of the tuition, so I'm just curious as to why you are still trying to get in? Especially because by the time you apply in 3-4 years, tuition everywhere will be higher...

He apparently used some Italian guy's house for an event and completely trashed it. I asked him if this dude is mad. Cousin "claims" the dude is cool, but then why is cousin hiding out in his parents' beach house, not picking up phone calls and making an impromptu vegas escape? Just last year he was making fun of my moving back home and how'd he never do it again.

My how the tables have turned!!

I like to make it my general policy to 'never say never' about anything, because of weird little twists of fate and such. Well played, Karma.

If I get accepted to vet school, then yes, I would be taking out loans for tuition. Yes, I am very hesitant to continue on this path, because of the large amount of debt. I have spoken with a vet who has been on the ad com for Davis (she is my boss) and she doesn't think Davis tuition will go much higher, due to Obama saying that federal aid will stop if state schools do any more increases. Whether that's true or not, we will have to see. Another factor is my age, I am 28, will start applying when I am 31, and that's not as much time for me to work as say someone who is a 26 year old dvm, 10 years pretty far behind. So no, I am not one who is die hard about being a vet and will borrow any amount of money without a thought because, ill be a veterinarian!!!!!....if I can't afford to feed my family and my animals, then I choose something else.

Wow. You really must think you are the bees knees. A lot of the people posting in response to you have made serious plans and budgets and thought about this.
Don't class us all as willfully disregarding the cost of this career decision. I personally have tried two other careers and I now know I will not be happy with anything else. I have faith that my income in combination with the income of my significant other will make life passable with loan payments. And maybe children are not on the plate for all of us? We all have our own situations and it is our own decision that we will live with, so get off your horse.

LMAO! the bees knees? Where in the world do I give off the impression that I think I am the ****? Really, I'm serious!

Did I ever say everyone hasn't planned or thought or budgeted???????????

Nope, I sure the f did not ever make such a ludacris statement, lol. You are taking my response wayyyy to personal. I am talking about MYSELF. someone asked me why I was planning to apply, so I responded with my feelings on my hesitant nature of taking a lot of loans out. Calm the f down.

I'm well aware people budget, whether its for vet school, or their groceries and a gym membership. I was saying I am not a young 26 year old who can afford to pay loans, reality is I would be 36 or older when I graduate/if I graduate, so I would be 10 years behind in payments compared to the theoretical 26 year old vet. So I would be retiring at 76, as opposed to 66, if I was even able to find a job and be able to pay my god awful house payment and school payment and whatev else life throws my way.

Idgaf is kids are on anyone's plate, that's a personal decision obviously, LOL. but for example if you have 3 kids who are 22, 19 and 17, and you want to pay for their college in addition to still paying for your loans from professional school, then yea you might have to go shop at wal mart instead of raleys. It's just the facts of life.

Not everyone has a so obviously, and humans don't live forever, so a spouses income could go down the tubes if they died, or decided to leave you for their high school sweetheart that they happened to find on facebook. Lol, I don't plan my money matters based on others, I base it on myself.

I am not on a high horse at all, sorry you think so. I just am real wary of getting in debt for anything in general----maybe cause my grandparents raised me, and they were born in 1915 and '21, I was raised to stay at the table overnight til my plate was clean, to always get gas when the tank is half full, and to rinse out your glass after your done and reuse it. I could go on and on, but point is, I don't take debt lightly, duh. I said I wasn't gonna respond before, but mybad, I answered a question. So won't do that again. Live long and prosper.

To me, I'm just confused on why you are still pursuing this profession if you have pretty much already decided it costs too much... 😕

Ok.. so Bay Area, you are now making it sound like we are not wary of debt. I think that topic has been EXHAUSTED on this forum. As my vet said, she still is paying off her student loans, but she doesn't mind. She only works part time too and could probably pay it off sooner if she took a full time job, but she's comfortable with her decision.

You are saying that we are taking your response too personal, but you said "WHO WOULD EVER GO TO THIS SCHOOL?" "Who" kinda applies to all of us and is a generalized question. I am not going to Western anymore (sorry marsala, beach day still!), but it even offended ME because I have friends both going and thinking of applying. I guess I'm saying that judging from all the responses you have received (from older AND younger people), you are on a different planet/playing field than us planet weirdo-ians.

Cause I want to save animals lives and also I'm probably a little crazy too.

Omg get over it. Students who pay the ridiculous ass price are gonna keep the college and every other college confident about charging a ****load of money. People see students paying 188k...they think hey, let's see if we can charge them 205k next year....and so on. It's a bunch of bull****, just like gas prices. You're offended? Get off your high horse. Doubt you would be offended if there wasn't truth to my theory. Stop the ridiculousness. Stick a fork in it. Done.

UGH. It is these kind of comments that really bug me. You aren't really handling this forum well. Maybe offended was the wrong CHOICE of words, but your words have yet to do anyone any favors.

TOPIC CHANGE:

Has anyone decided where to live?!?!?!?!!? So excited for all of you! SoCal is beautiful (just not now, as it's pouring rain)

I have a house in mind in the Lincoln Park area. Only a mile from the school! (I am not a fan of commuting, lol)

Good god. You must be a snob. Handling the forum well? Lol. It's a forum, not a party and you aren't my friend. I can share my opinion. I've told you to drop it but your snob attitude keeps on going like the energizer bunny. Peace in the middle east

Uh, I don't remember calling you names. And no, I'm far from a snob. But believe what you want.

Whatever. I changed the topic. Don't care anymore.

Hey kids, if we don't have anything nice to say about someone, don't say anything at all.👍

I'm happy for your Davis acceptance 🙂 but sad you won't be a classmate at Western.🙁

I know. 🙁 I know my personality would fit in really well at Western. I know it should have been a really easy decision to pick Davis, but it was not. I was neck and neck with Davis and Dublin too... would have never foreseen being torn between schools when I was twelve and decided I wanted to go to Davis, haha. I wish I could spend a different year at all of them!!!

We've obviously moved on (yay) so I'll edit it to say I'm declining my spot soon. Hope someone here gets it!!!!!

I know. 🙁 I know my personality would fit in really well at Western.

Just wondering, what's the difference in personalities at Davis versus Western? I've always wondered what people meant by that...is it the same difference with NorCal/SoCal residents?

It's more the type of learning environment than a NorCal/SoCal/NotCal thing. The collaborative PBL at Western is something that some people do really well and some who need more of a traditional school environment (aka Davis) don't.

So, some would do well in either environment, some don't do trad school well so choose Western and some don't do PBL well and thus should choose Davis or other trad school.

But now that Davis' new curric has some PBL, you are stuck with it 🙂

But I'd say western you have to be a complete jump starter whereas Davis you get a sampling of different classes. Davis' schedule changes ALL the time, so you have to keep on your toes.

Western you get to really network with different practices so you can possibly jump start your career. Davis has "community practice" which is quite awesome where you get to see normal stuff like ringworm and ear mites and puppy exams.

I did wish that western had a teaching hospital. But still, can't beat SoCal weather!!!!

hey current Western...ers? thanks again for your advice and info so far... i have more questions! 😳

what kinds of jobs/positions have you heard about people receiving from classes that have already graduated or this upcoming graduating class? (also, how many classes have graduated already?)

is there a predominant tendency for students coming out of Western to do, say, small animal surgery? or lab animal medicine? or equine? or ...anything particular? specialization? do graduates tend to stay in California?

also, in your third and 4th years, do you have just the options of clinical experience sites listed here (mostly local): http://prospective.westernu.edu/veterinary/clinical
or can you go anywhere you want, really? and is that the case for both 3rd and 4th years?

thanks again in advance! 🙂

from my understanding, 4th year you can go anywhere you want. A lot of people choose to go where they'll eventually want to end up working in their 4th year.

3rd year you go through more rotations sites and the focus at each site can be seen in the list of rotations. I think 3rd year locations are more limited than 4th year locations.

Third year are assigned "courses" in which may have multiple sites (Western designated) you can complete them. Some may have only 1 some have up to like 3 of 4. You select based on what your preferences is and at what time of the year you want to do it. The 4th year is up to you based on some of the requirements established by Western.

Mostly go into small animal medicine. The first graduating class is in 2007. So There have been 5 graduating classes. So if the ones who did enter a residency are probably finishing up now. Most schools tend to reflect the same like the amount who go in to small versus larger versus equine, etc etc.
