and in case you think I don't have a reason, I AM waiting to see if I get into VCU b/c its close to my family here in virginia and I AM waiting for an acceptance to UW which costs half as much as the others.

So what part of that provides you rationale for having two deposits at a time.............pick between the two you have now and hold out for VCU of UW...........you don't need two at a time....

oh is that what this is all about? yes of course I'm going to pick one of them and withdraw from the other. I need a few days to work it out, thats all. Wow no wonder why everybody is so hostile

yeah man...........I thought you might have had it misunderstood

on one of the other posts someone provided a few rationales for having more than one.........but for most of us it will be a matter of picking the best of what we have now and keep competing for better

Haha, good, now let's all go get drinks together and celebrate.

I'm going to use as much time as I please. Its my acceptance and I get the full 45 days to figure out if I want to go there, or if I will wait for another school in mid-january. Call me selfish if you want. I deserve the time and patience I've earned. If somebody wants my spot, sit tight and chill. end of story.

you remind me of my 2 year old nephew when he walks up to my and takes my purse and says "MINE!" then throws a temper tantrum and craps his pants.

Probably...because my fiance is going to law school and will not find out where he's accepted before Jan 15th.

. To be reasonable to pinetar321, he/she did have a misunderstanding that he realized later in the thread.

Does it really take away from anyone if you hold on more than 45 days? Dental schools are going to fill their spots, you even hear about people getting a call the day that orientation starts. So, even if someone puts down a deposit and takes 90 days, it's not like they're taking up 2 spots for the rest of time.

And, for the record, I'm not sitting on multiple acceptances

I believe it does.............it essentially delays the entire process, possibly forcing some to make commitments that they will either have to turn down or not be able to break later on (ie...costing them money). Waiting for a spouse to relocate is perfectly understandable.....but "i need more time" argument is pretty ridiculous. You should have known which schools you preferred over others....

Take me for example I am hoping for UF but I have gotten into BU. So next month I will have to put down 3000 and begin the process of committing to the NAVY because 100 grand a year is something I don't want to do.........If someone holds up UF and I hear I got in later in the cycle, that's going to cost me

Sorry you feel like that, but you have to remember that alot of the people applying to dental school are not 22 year old college students. They have families and spouses to think about, and moving across the country is just not that simple! I certainly don't want to spend more money to put down deposits when we have already used a huge chunk of our savings to pay for applications, but obviously we are going to do what we have to do.

For me, getting to to dental schools was only the first step. Now comes the second (and possibly more difficult) step of my husband finding a job. Keeping options open is the best decision for us and the only way that makes sense.

In the end each student can only end up taking one spot, and the extra spots that they held will be filled.

👍It is very important to consider your spouse and the potential job market. My wife and I married in Florida (where we're both from) in May, right after she graduated with her BS in nursing and right before moving to AZ so I could get settled in before school started. The process of changing her name, transferring her nursing license, applying for jobs, and finally getting a nursing job ended YESTERDAY when she finally landed her first nursing job. Obviously this timeline may not be the norm, but do not make assumptions on the job market, especially for recent grads with no experience; 2 weeks ago there was a healthcare job fair in Phoenix. Over 500 people showed up and there were only 4 employers there! It has not been fun living off of loan $$$, savings, and income from my wife's part-time job. I'm just glad that our prayers have been answered and the worrying is over.

I cant believe 1/4 of the people voted yes....

I hope most of them simply misinterpreted the question..

Maybe SDN is over-represented with wealthy people as well 🙄

I'm personally not doing it because it would be a ridiculously expensive endeavor. But I will have to say that if the person can afford it, they have the right to take their time imo. I think 45 days is enough for most people...people who are accepted later in the cycle don't have more than a week to decide so that should help put things in perspective.

The whole concept of a person taking up multiple spots can be extrapolated to interviews as well. What if an accepted student decides to go on to interview past Dec just to check out their options. Would that be unfair? After all they are taking up an interview spot that another, not-yet-accepted student would love to have.

Probably...because my fiance is going to law school and will not find out where he's accepted before Jan 15th.
January 15... ah. My gf doesn't find out about grad schools till March🙁

I am positive people put double deposits or more only after seriously thinking about it.

Just wanted to clarify some things about this thread. Many people who will interview at their top choice later in January and February are expected to put a deposit down now to ensure a spot in a dental school. Those who have been waitlisted at their top choice and accepted at others are also expected to place a deposit while waiting for a decision. I'm talking about just holding multiple spots for a while because you are unsure of where you want to go (either due to a difficult scenario or personal right) . Everyone seems to know what I mean based on the debating, but I just wanted to clarify.

I guess the thread should be retitled, "Will you hold multiple seats".
Yea, I think some people are misinterpreting what you're saying. Holding a spot while waiting to get in somewhere else is perfectly normal. Futuredent is talking about having been accepted to your favorite schools and not being able to make a choice in 45 days.

I personally don't feel right holding a spot if I really don't think I'm going somewhere. Granted, I've only gotten a letter and gotten into one school so far, but in the event that I do get accepted to more than one, I will try my best not to unnecessarily hold a spot that someone else could have. That said, there is no way I would rush the decision just because I felt bad. It could just as well have happened to me, or anyone else, and you should take the time you need in making the decision because it took a hell of a lot of hard work to get this far, and you need to really enjoy the next four years.

On that same note, I have a question about in a particular scenario. I have an interview at Columbia on Jan 8th, but I need to notify UMDNJ by January 15th. There's almost zero chance I'll know if I got into Columbia in less than a week, or at least I would imagine so. Their website says expect around 2 weeks if I remember correctly. So basically I have to tell UMDNJ before I know if I'm even accepted or not at Columbia. How do you handle a situation like that? I thought about calling and seeing how long it would take to get notified and tell them the situation, but it's not like I can say, "Hey, I need to know in like 3 days after my interview, so please get that done quickly." I realize saying something like that is a little extreme, but you get the point...

Well when we're talking about multiple deposits....I am pretty sure even if people have multiple acceptances, the most they'll put down the deposits is 2 or maybe 3 schools right? I mean out of all 15 schools I applied to, let's say I got into all 15. I can already truncate my list down to 2 schools which both I REALLY wanna go. It's hard to get accepted these days\. Once we get there, we should have the rights and the time to decide which schools we truly want to go. I am sorry if that sounds really selfish to some of you but. . . we are talking about our educations and the next 4 years of our lives. If we need more time to make that decision, then we should do that. I remember reading someone posted on some extreme example story about what if an applicant's mother got sick, he's on his state dental school's waitlist and don't have money to put down for the 2nd school blah blah blah...ok that was a long long story and I don't feel like typing all that out, hopfully some of you know what I am talking about. What I am trying to get is I can put down multiple deposits or I can decline my offers and no one will know about it and no one will appreciate it like it never happened. Take care of yourself first before start thinking about others.

He probably won't hear til March either...but definitely not before Jan 15 (which is when deposits need to be in)..except for one school which gave him a priority application and he was quickly accepted already. Law school doesn't have a set time (like we have Dec 1st) so they can take as long as they want 😱

:corny:

(I felt this urge to put him in here; no one used him yet!)

In your case, you're fine if you liked Columbia and will be debating on going there.

How would I be fine? I would have to decline UMDNJ before I knew if I was in Columbia, assuming I like it....

I meant you would be fine to put down the deposit and wait on Columbia. Sorry for the confusion.

Ohh gotcha. Yeah is that really the only option? How long do you have after the deposit to decline usually? I can really just look that up later but I'm here so I figured I'd throw it out there.

It's $1,000 deposit though, and that would suck.
