Hey everyone, just a quick note about Windows 7.

I just upgraded tonight and have had no issues so far. It doesn't seem to be a revolutionary update and some basic functionality has changed (quick launch icons don't open a new window for internet browsers for instance, minor annoyance so far--prob just need to adapt).

Anyhow the main point for writing for any other early adopters...

If you are still in Uni you can get a decent price on the upgrade versions $30USD. http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/theultimatesteal-us/default.aspx

You can also pick up Office 2007 for a bargain there too. Australia has their own version of that site so if you aren't US based, check around a bit. (itsnotcheating.com.au is the aussie site). All you need to get the deal is a CC and a university email address.

Sorry, just figure there is no reason for people to pay full retail if they don't have to.

I've been using a beta version for a few months now and so far it's been wonderful. Don't hesitate to switch once you know all your drivers are supported - it's way better than Vista.

But XP Pro can still kick Vista's butt anyday!
Hehe. I'm loyal to my old dinosaur of a laptop, even though in my heart, I know it's not going to make it through the next year, let alone through vet school. It might have a heart attack if I try to upgrade it to Win7...

I may have to upgrade to Office 2007 though--used it at school, and loved it so much more than the 2003 version I'm running with.

The new Office is okay, but it took me like 5 years to figure out where things were when I first started using it...

I actually do have XP still on this computer (from 2004! *pats the noisy, dusty HP*) but my other laptop has the Windows 7 Beta on it and it's pretty neat. It's different, but not so much that you're lost... especially if you got used to Vista at all (I use it at work). Win7 is definitely prettier, and I like the tabs above the start bar - very handy.

Functionally and performance wise Windows 7 is a massive improvement over Windows Vista, even if it doesn't look much different aesthetically. I am far from a Microsoft aficionado and have been very impressed with 7 since I installed it a few months back on my tablet PC.

My desktop still has Debian on it, though. 😉

He might be squatting to take a dump. Or his thumb could represent the market share of Linux, one percent. Now that is a fair and balanced comment.

yea i'm thinking about getting windows 7 upgrade because it's so cheap

do u find that it runs faster than vista?

Where are you seeing the upgrade for $30? I can only find the Win7 download for ~$70. I currently have Vista but if I can find the Win7 upgrade for less then $50 I'll do it in a heartbeat. We have it at work and I really like it.

That's to the Professional upgrade vs the Home Premium, but it's the same price so you may as well get it over Home Premium, as it can do more stuff for the same price.

Here's the Home Premium link:

Also it should be noted that for either of those two methods to work, you need a .edu e-mail address.

7 is excellent, I really love it. Didn't enjoy Vista sucking up all my system resources but 7 works quite nicely AND finally has some degree of dual monitor support (though UltraMon is still better). The 'docking' feature is also quite nice. I keep finding more stuff to like about it every day too.

Besides having a 2+ year old MacBook with a broken "d" key, the docking station and other handy features in Windows 7 were part of the reason I decided to go PC when I bought a new laptop last month. I can't say I completely favor it over Mac OS, but it is a nice halfway point for someone who wants a PC for use of software but still likes the Mac functionality.

I've got windows 7 on my new laptop, and love it. I've never used Vista, so can't compare to there, but no complaints here.

I also got the 2007 Office off the above website for use on the new laptop. No complaints there either, I ordered a hard copy disk and it came relatively quickly.

I recently got a new laptop with Windows 7. No complaints as of yet. However, I sort of miss my old HP from 8th grade... It has lasted for so long. If you are thinking about switching to Windows 7, I would recommend it.

Apparently I'm computer illiterate tonight. When I click on the first link in post #1 of the first thread you linked to it takes me to the same page I was already on that has Win7 listed for $65 and about $77 after you add the disk in the checkout. It accepted my .edu email but I just don't see the $30 deal. Am I blind?

Before you go out and buy it,check and see if your schools offer it for free. I know I spoke with the IT guys here and I was told that we would be getting it for free sometime this coming semester.

Oh yah sorry, the deal's changed now. I thought it expired January 15th but apparently it expired on the 5th per here: http://windows7.digitalriver.com/st...=S0UjsAoBAkcAAHK@vhsAAAAZ&rests=1262822318685

Darn! Thanks anyway. Still a good deal on the home office, though.

The upgrade to the 32-bit enterprise is already free on the web, but it's not available for mailing... so you could get it right now if you aren't wanting to do a fresh install. Otherwise, I dunno, but I wouldn't hold my breath. 🙂

I have XP... will probably always have XP unless someone is willing to give me a copy of the new windows.

I miss Windows 95 🙁
