For the supplemental, I don't have any additional animal/veterinary experience so far, but I am going back to my vet assistant job after the semester is over the week after the supplemental is due. Should I include this with my expected hours or not?
I would not, since it is supposed to be up to submission date.

Hello! I am working on the supplemental essay about whom do you admire most. It says they want to assess our intrapersonal skills, leadership, and maturity skills beyond the interest in veterinary medicine. I would like to write about my professor who is a retired dairy veterinarian; not because of his career as a veterinarian but who he is as a person. Do you think if I frame it in this way it'll still be impactful and it's less about veterinary medicine?

Ehhh, I’d personally be careful about it. They want you to talk about someone you know outside of veterinary medicine. While I think that you can certainly have valid reasons for wanting to pick this mentor, I think they’re still in the sphere of veterinary medicine.

I’d choose someone else.

Ultimately you can try to swing it that way but I’d strong advise against it. It can be anyone who’s had a significant effect on your life…. They want to see about what’s important to you outside of veterinary medicine. Write about friends, family, or about someone out there making a difference in the world. I wrote about a seventh grader I know and am very close with and what makes her amazing.

ETA: I think you should assess how a potential reader might see this- one may read it and shake their head but let it slide, someone else may say you didn’t answer the prompt. While the former might still mean you advance to another review stage, neither are responses you’d want from a reviewer of your app.

I think you're right, I was trying to justify it because I truly do look up to this professor. I have plenty of other influential people outside of vet med that i can write about! Thank you for your advice, I don't want the reviewers to think negatively on my essay.

Why don’t you just refer to him as a professor and not discuss his degree?

I'm working on the person that I admire most part of the supplemental essay, and the person that came immediately to mind is my current boss at the dairy farm where I work. It's technically dairy farming and not directly veterinary... but is that too close to the field to be considered outside of veterinary medicine? Also, he is one of the people who wrote a letter of recommendation for me-- would that be seen as a negative/repetitive or does that highlight our relationship and the things that I have learned while working for him?

I think the essay is an opportunity to show your wider personality, interests, and relationships. I’d still go for someone else but this at least isn’t directly veterinary. But, you’re still going to be talking about animals and the farm (I’d assume), so just make sure you highlight his qualities and focus on him!

TLDR: I wouldn’t, but this would technically pass muster (IMO). Make sure you use the essay to talk about him and through him, a reflection of you and your values.

It’s okay, it’s so stressful to try to figure out who to pick and how to represent it all! I think you’re headed in the right direction. Best of luck! 🙂

Does anyone know if there is a preferred structure for listing out the additional experiences gained on the supplemental? I didn't have anything new, just gained more hours in previously mentioned ones so I'm not sure if an organized list is better or if they are looking for more paragraph style writing? I am probably way overthinking it but just wanted to check 😆

When filling out the personal section, should I include every address I've had? My family lived in a few states growing up, but I spent most of my childhood in one of them.

Is it asking you for your entire childhood address history? I had to do that once for a child abuse security clearance ….. but never for anything else outside of literal clearance applications with the FBI.

It has present address, permanent address, and one option for previous address. I filled out present and permanent, but not the previous address. It's to determine residency.

That makes sense. I’d say if you have enough history to prove residency requirements from those two, I don’t think you’d need to list more. Best of luck!

For the same supplemental prompt about additional non veterinary experiences, I've been in an exec position of my sorority and put that in my VMCAS application but up until this semester hadn't had any major challenges in that role (I'm responsible for academic performance and things like that) but this semester ended up with a freshman that lost her mom a few weeks into the semester and was really struggling to handle that and do school at the same time. I also ended up taking her as a little, and spent a lot of time connecting her to resources, and meeting with faculty and student life staff to make sure she had support from them as well as the sorority. I don't know if this is worth adding to my experience or not, because I learned a lot and I feel like this showcases a lot of good traits for a DVM candidate, but since the exec position itself was already included in my VMCAS application I feel like it's redundant to write about it on the supplemental when they've asked us not to repeat info. Thoughts??

Just submitted my supplemental! When do we start hearing back for acceptances?

That's such a meaningful experience, and I would definitely include it! When I was writing my supplemental essays, I talked about the same occupations/positions/roles I had listed on my VMCAS application, but with additional hours I accrued and new things that I experienced in those roles since submitting my VMCAS application in August. So ultimately, I think this topic is totally applicable, as long as you didn't already talk about this scenario somewhere in your VMCAS app.

Anyone else here a silly goose and forget to hit the "submit" button after paying the supplemental fee LOL ??? UW very graciously offered an extension to submit the supplemental - if this is you, check your emails! I (very understandably) was given just 1 business day to do so😅

Did you get an email from them saying that you never did? I didn't but I just checked the portal and it kinda looks like I never hit submit either😳

Uh oh! Yes, they emailed me directly and mentioned it was a common issue. I imagine they will do the same for others, because they had to extend my access to the supplemental. But it wouldn’t hurt to email them about it.

I just saw on their website that summer transcripts needed to have been sent by Sep. Does that mean I screwed myself over if I listed them as planned when I applied? 😭

hi, does anyone know if we need to send in our fall transcripts?

Not necessarily, I’d guess that it just wouldn’t factor into your GPA that they’d otherwise be considering for acceptance. Depending how many outstanding prerequisites you have, I’d imagine submitting in the spring would still be okay. Definitely recommend emailing admissions and see what they say!

Does anyone know if there is a way to confirm if the Office of Academic Affairs got our Fall transcript? I sent it through my institution via email, but I really want to make sure they got it so my application is valid.

I emailed them a copy of my official transcript through email (though addressed to me so technically unofficial) and sent a copy of my normal official transcript via parchment and they sent me a receipt of confirmation to my email. So you could send them an email as they do seem to be pretty responsive, but to be fair I sent my transcripts early as I sent them to all the schools I applied to at the same time!
